Guttman says that as soon as the Washington Post reported that ``Bush had made some headway in the race to win American Jewish support,'' in his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Sharon, ``Kerry didn't waste a minute, and jumped on the bandwagon, announcing his support for Sharon's plan'' for disengagement in Gaza.

Bush Asks Saddam's Generals for Help...

Well, THERE'S a confidence-builder!...

Young Shi'ites are lining up to fight - not for firebrand Shi'ite cleric Moqtada Al-Sadr, but for Sunnis in Fallujah.

A senior Iraqi general was greeted by flag-waving crowds yesterday as he arrived at the Sunni stronghold city of Fallujah to take over from withdrawing American forces. Scenes of jubilation greeted Major-General Jassem Mohamed Saleh at Fallujah's eastern edge.

One minute we are told that the clash between US soldiers and anti-coalition forces is an epoch-shaping battle. A recent report described Fallujah as 'a defining moment in America's history'; British journalist in Washington Andrew Sullivan said the battle of Fallujah contained 'the entire future of the attempt to break the back of Islamist terror and Muslim autocracy'. It's 'Iraqalypse Now', said some reports (1). Yet this morning we hear that US marines have started to pull out of Fallujah, having handed authority over the city to a new 1000-strong Iraqi force called the Fallujah Protective Army, headed by a former Ba'athist general no less.

CRITICISM OF ISRAEL IS NOT "ANTI-SEMITISM"...

American contractors and soldiers torturing Iraqi prisoners in a prison outside Baghdad? A huge story, by anyone's standards, surely, especially when pictures of the abuse were broadcast on the US TV network CBS. So it was no surprise that newspapers around the world made huge, horrified play of the events at the Abu Ghraib prison. It was more of a surprise, however, that the story did not receive the same level of coverage in the US papers.

9/11 Widow thinks Bush let it happen...

For the resistance, that is. There's no sugar-coating the fact that the Bush administration has suffered a major, public defeat in Fallujah. The United States looked the insurgents in the eye there—and blinked. Instead of flattening Fallujah if the insurgents didn't hand over heavy weapons and stop fighting, U.S. forces have meekly retreated, under cover of a plan that would put some of the same insurgents on the U.S. payroll.

Chilling TV pictures of Iraqi prisoners being tortured and abused by US soldiers will damage Britain and signal the “end of the story” for America in Iraq, it was claimed today. The pictures taken by US soldiers guarding Iraqis were broadcast on TV news bulletins in the US last night. The graphic photos show hooded and naked prisoners being abused, some sexually, with US soldiers smiling and looking on.

Today on CBS television, Paul Bremer boasted, "In the last three or four weeks we've seen a rather dramatic reduction in the number of attacks on the coalition. They are down by about 50 percent," I read this quote to my friend Hamoudi here in Baghdad. He raises his eyebrows and says, "But attacks on helicopters has been up 100%. The resistance is finding it easier to attack the helicopters than the ground patrols. Attacks are not decreasing, they are changing. Doesn't Mr. Bremer see this?"

A well-planned, politically solid session of the World Tribunal on Iraq took place April 15-17 in Brussels, Belgium. The hearings showed that key Bush administration members planned aggression against Iraq starting years before the war was launched.

Political strategy is not my strong suit, but I wonder if this is the best tactic that President Bush-s supporters should take. A study mapping the prisons built in the boom of the last two decades has found that some counties in the United States now have more than 30 percent of their residents behind bars.

"I have been trying for thousands of years to get humanity to follow the Left-Hand Path, and these guys are the pits at helping me," he said disgustedly, in a recent interview. "I've been behind some major players--Pol Pot, Stalin, Hitler, Lincoln, FDR--and compared to them, these guys are buffoons. They couldn't even con the US administration into invading two insignificant little countries without fouling it up. I wanted millions dead, decades of war and murder and destruction, and trillions of dollars wasted. These punks couldn't even do that. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse? The Abu Ghraib prison was a symbol of Saddam's horrific tyranny: electrodes hanging out of the walls, floors stained with the blood of god-knows-how-many victims, bodies dangling from meat-hooks, like in some cheap Grade-B horror flick. So when the Americans came and "liberated" the place, the long-suffering Iraqi people were supposed to be grateful. After all, the sadistic torturers of the Ba'athist regime were gone, and it was a new day – or was it?

"As it has become clear that US interests and democracy in Iraq are basically incompatible, the United States has, unsurprisingly and as many predicted, chosen to preserve the supremacy of its own interests and its control of Iraqi affairs at the expense of a genuine transfer of power and the establishment of a political system in which Iraqis are able to choose their political system and control their destiny and resources."

Bushway operatives are now trolling heavily in the "exurbs" -- middle-class and upscale housing developments sprouting all over the countryside, where small farmers have been forced off the land by ruthless, government-greased agribusiness conglomerates and predatory banks. Developers lure stressed-out city-dwellers to these gilded holding pens by constructing a cozy simulacrum of an old-fashioned rural community, complete with fake storefronts -- beguilingly realistic, but only a few feet deep -- and, yes, fake horses, made of metal, gently nosing over white picket fences. Mehlman's minions believe exurbia offers rich pickings for the Bush cult -- and they're probably right. People who live in fake towns, with fake stores and fake horses, are likely to be happy with a fake president, who uses fake evidence and fake words about "freedom" and "peace" to launch all-too-real wars of conquest while turning the national treasury into a candy store for his cronies.

How is it that the son of anti-war social activists who grew up marching on Washington wound up in a military unit in Iraq? But the question that haunts his family is far more profound, singed on their souls by tears of grief: Why are good young men like their son and brother dying in an unjust war - for nothing?

But the differences between Europe and the U.S. are growing, registering like a series of small quakes on the Richter scale. Trade disputes over agriculture, steel, and genetically modified foods; broken treaties and promises on global warming, sustainability, nuclear test bans, and the international court; sharply differing opinions on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and on the use of militarism vs. diplomacy to resolve disputes; eastward expansion of the European Union into traditional NATO areas; multilateralism vs. unilateralism, the list is long and growing. European corporations are expanding around the globe, challenging their U.S. counterparts. A rising Euro now is competing with the dollar as a global currency. The Europeans are closer to putting their John Hancocks on a new Constitution that will bind them closer as a continent.

As the presidential campaign turned into a brawl this week over John Kerry's stint in Vietnam and what he did or did not do with his medals, some Democrats were actually pretty pleased. They figured that any opportunity to compare Mr. Kerry's military background with President Bush's — not to mention Vice President Dick Cheney's — was welcome and they took advantage of it.

The good news for opponents of the war in Iraq is that President Bush's challenger has finally called for a rapid American withdrawal. "Every day the U.S. military remains in Iraq," he said, "we imperil U.S. security, drain our economy, ignore our nation's domestic needs and prevent democratic self-rule from developing in Iraq." The bad news is that the challenger's name is Ralph Nader. John Kerry, by contrast, sounds as though he thinks the only thing worse than making a mistake is correcting it.

Graphic photographs showing the torture and sexual abuse of Iraqi prisoners in a US-run prison outside Baghdad emerged yesterday from a military inquiry which has left six soldiers facing a possible court martial and a general under investigation.

The world must be prevented by all available means from hearing, from the lips of a credible witness, that the Americans are full partners in Israel’s nuclear arms programme, while pretending to be the world’s sheriff for the prevention of nuclear proliferation

President Bush lied to the people and to Congress about weapons of mass destruction and the purported "grave and imminent" threat Iraq posed to the U.S. He let Osama bin Ladin go so he could sate his personal obsession with Saddam Hussein and now, many billions of dollars and hundreds of dead Americans later, Bush continues to deny reality and defy the Constitution.

With its lies about weapons of mass destruction and Al Qaeda connections fully exposed, the White House is now arguing that its criminal war on Iraq is being waged to bring liberation and democracy to the Iraqi people. “America’s objective in Iraq is limited and it is firm,” declared President Bush at a recent press conference. “We seek an independent, free and secure Iraq.”

THE United States’ policy on Iraq was in disarray last night, as the Pentagon admitted it was unaware of a breakthrough agreement to end the siege of Fallujah announced by its troops on the ground. While a new poll showed a majority of Iraqis want US and British troops to leave in the next few months, an American marine commander revealed that his troops were preparing to withdraw from the outskirts of Fallujah, a major U-turn in US policy.

I volunteered to ride in ambulances evacuating the wounded. Surely they don't shoot ambulances? In fact, US snipers were targeting ambulances. I learned to pick out the beams of sniper rifles. I remember the medics' anger when the hospital's last working ambulance carrying British and American volunteers returned shot to pieces, how stunned they were when American, British and Australian volunteers came under fire after declaring their nationalities to US troops.

The Constitution does not explicitly authorize the government to lie to the people. When the government lies to the people, it acts unconstitutionally and illegally. A government that lies to the people delegitimizes itself. A government that lies to the people breaks faith with the people. A government that lies to the people loses the moral and legal right to rule. A government that lies to the people ceases to be the lawful government of the land, and the people are no longer morally obliged to obey its dictates or to pay its bills. - M. R.

For Bush to get away with stealing an election, the mainstream media is going to have to convince you that at least half of America loves the man. Therefore, expect a deluge of phonied up polls and puff pieces about how beloved Der Fuhrer is by the volk. But every time you hear a percentage of how many people support the President, go talk to at least ten people and ask their opinion. So far. I have not once found the real world percentage of support to come anywhere close to whet the media was claiming. - M. R.

More bovine excrement from the propagandists...
Oh yeah, we believe that Saddam would video tape himself gicing money to terrorists. Suuuuuure we do. What pisses me off is not that the lies are getting this dumb and obvious, but that the so-called intelligence boys think We The People are dumb enough to fall for them. I'm insulted that they really think this would work. - M. R.

Seat Belts Failing in Rollovers...
We are all required to pay for them, and fined if we don;t wear them, but while the wearing of seat belts is at an all-time high, so too are set belt failures, resulting in the serious injuries and deaths seat belts are supposed to prevent. - M. R.

The Case for Impeaching George W. Bush...
The Congressional Authorization for the use of force in Iraq required that the President prove to the Congress that Iraq was a threat. IN hindsight, it is clear that at the time Bush invoked that authorization, he did not have such proof. Therefore the authorization was not legally in effect at the time. Bush is guilty of misappropriating the entire US military for personal use, and should be required to reimburse the taxpayer for the costs. - M. R.

MAPS AND CHARTS OF IRAQI OILFIELDS: CHENEY ENERGY TASK FORCE...
Some of Cheney's energy task force papers have been made public through court actions. They reveal that Mideast oil was an area of deep interest for the task force. Will the rest of the documents prove that the war in Iraq was motivated by a desire for oil after all? - M. R.

‘Bush overstepped authority since 9/11’...
Remember all those jokes Bush made about being dictator? We're not laughing any more. - M. R.

The Bush administration is bracing itself for the latest memoir by a former insider. Joe Wilson, a former ambassador, will this week reveal the name of the government official who "outed" his wife - revealing her identity as a CIA operative in apparent revenge for his role in proving the White House made false claims about Iraq's efforts to develop nuclear weapons.

A second unit of the Iraqi armed forces has mutinied at Fallujah after being involved in heavy fighting with insurgents Ali Allawi, the Iraqi Defence Minister, said yesterday.

"Ironically, all of that money has retarded the growth of a viable Jewish state in the Middle East. By enabling Israeli leaders to act like bullies, American aid prolongs Israel's painful adolescence and creates the illusion that the country never has to grow up. Sharon, Benjamin Netanyahu, and Benny Elon live in a fantasy world where, thanks to U.S. favoritism, Israel will never have to get along with its neighbors. Can such a nation survive? If nothing else, demography and economics suggest otherwise."

If that is the case, and it sure seems so at the moment, then this commission has to ask us all -- and I don't exclude myself -- how much of Congress and the press went to war with an air of juvenile glee. The Commission on Credulous Stupidity may call me as its first witness, but after that it has to examine how, despite our vaunted separation of powers, a barely elected president opted for a war that need not have been fought. This is Bush's cause, a noble but irrational effort much like the one that set off for Jerusalem in the year 1212. It was known as the Children's Crusade.

The Toledo Diocese is taking another look at a woman's previously dismissed claims of satanic sexual abuse by Roman Catholic priests now that one of the clergymen has been charged with the ``ritualistic'' slaying of a nun 24 years ago.

British Petroleum quits Iraq...
Once eager to get into Iraq and harcvest the conquered oil, BP has decied that the place is just too dangerous, and the coalition unable to settle things down. - M. R.

Spanish Troops Relieved To Be Back From Iraq...
That may be an understatement. - M. R.

Pulp fictions triumph over truth...
Bush's backers are so desperately in need of justification for the war that even myths and legends will suffice. - M. R.

Abuse Of Iraqi POWs By GIs Probed...

Army Finds Troop Supply 'Getting Thin'...
Do you feel a draft? - M. R.

The Iraqi resistance is exploding and muslim support is mounting. None of our people are secure and the armed forces are striking out blindly against the population since the resistance is covert and has no face. They strike and disappear. We have succeeded in uniting the Arab world against us and alienating most of the rest of rhe world because of our aggressive attack without gaining their support.

The NRC staff was so concerned about safety at Davis-Besse that in September and October of 2001, they drafted an order that would require Davis-Besse to shut down for safety reasons. The owner did not want to shut down the plant. So, the owner came in and met with the NRC staff in October and November of 2001 and provided reasons why they thought the plant was safe to keep operating. The NRC looked at that information and ultimately agreed with the plant's owner and did not require the plant to shut down. But later in the spring of 2002, when the plant was finally shut down for a scheduled re-fueling outage, very serious cracks in the nuclear reactor vessel were found, boric acid was leaking out of those cracks and had eroded a large hole through the 6-inch steel cladding in the reactor vessel beneath Nozzles 1, 2 and 3. Scott Portzline told me, "When I first saw the photograph of the hole that was eaten into the Davis-Besse reactor, I could hardly believe it. We realized that we were really lucky that Toledo did not have a nuclear accident and studies indicated that we were just a month or so away from it (potential melt down event)."

The sonar operator, father of two-year-old Ellie-Mae, said: " I've never seen a boat in such poor condition. It's fair to describe it as a death trap.

Berlin cop gives Hitler salute at British embassy...
I think in this case, the gesture was justified, given how the UK and US have been acting lately. If anyone is able to recognize up and coming dictators, it will be the Germans. If any German readers have the address of the authorities investgating this officer, please send along and I will post, so that readers can write letters of support for what was clearly a legitimate act of protest. - M. R.

UN chief hits out at fraud claims...
I wonder if the fraud allegations are a form of pressure to get Kofi to be a bit more "agreeable" to US requests. - M. R.

Bush and Cheney to tell 9/11 stories...
No oath. No recordings. No TV. No transcripts. Just a few "notes". They might as well hang neon signs on the wall flashing "COVER-UP". - M. R.

French Jews Accuse Pope Of Siding With Muslims...
The Pope DARED object to the random killing of Palestinians. Just who does he think he IS, anyway!!! - M. R.

In another illustration of the current administration's commitment to keeping the American people in the loop, the White House demanded that there be no recording or formal transcription of today's joint interview of President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney by the 9/11 commission.
That alone tells us all that Bush and Cheney have something to hide, and that the 9-11 Commission is complicit. - M. R.

''Bush Administration May Be Jeopardizing U.S. Interests in the Middle East''...
Bush's support for Sharon's land grab may win campaign money from AIPAC, but is it really wise for the US to anger the nations sitting on the oil our nation needs? - M. R.

US marines hand Fallujah over to Saddam general...
Bush's people are spinning this as hard as they can to not look like another failure. But I for one am glad the kids are being pulled back out of harm's way. - M. R.

A US general has been suspended in Iraq over the alleged abuse of prisoners by US troops in jails she ran.

It is clear that the American war crimes will not reach the International Court of Justice in The Hague. Today, America sets the world's moral standards. It alone decides who will be judged, who is a terrorist, what is legitimate resistance to occupation, who is a religious fanatic, and who is a legitimate target for assassination. That is how four Iraqi children, who laughed at the sight of a dead American soldier, merited being killed on the spot.

U.S. Marines to End Siege of Fallujah...
I'm glad no more kids will be sacrificed trying to place Fallujah under American control. - M. R.

Trajkovski's presumed death came at a critical time for Macedonia, a tiny Balkan republic still tense after six months of ethnic conflict in 2001. Trajkovski, 47, had been widely hailed for his efforts to get Macedonians and rival ethnic Albanians to live together in peace.

Photographs broadcast by CBS News show U.S. military police apparently abusing Iraqi prisoners at a Baghdad-area prison late last year.

Pro-Western PM wins Macedonia presidency...
See next story. - M. R.

"Hiding the death and destruction of this war does not make it easier on anyone except those who want to keep the truth away from the people."

Pentagon flogs a dead horse...
"After months of careful investigation, we discovered that both Saddam Hussein and the 9-11 plotters both subscribed to National Geographic. Therefore we conclude that there is a connection between Iraq and 9-11." - M. R.

Iraq attackers kill 10 US troops...

'Israel's actions don't justify anti-Semitism'...
While I agree with this, I think the first step towards achieving it is for Israel to abandon the concept of collective guilt for the entire world over what happened in Nazi Germany. - M. R.
