When Bin Laden appears on our TV screens, we are reminded that . . .

And, now he has the audacity to call for a cessation of public criticism!
Iam so surprised that some respectable media figures are trying to analyze whether this tape will enhance or threaten Bush's lead in the polls. To me, it's obviously a pro-Bush event.
While some conspiracy-theory sites think the tape may be fake- and they may be right, I can't confirm that and I can't agree or disagree. What amazes me is the timing.
Last month, U.S. Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski decided to try one of Maryland's new voting machines in Takoma Park. It was a brand-new Diebold AccuVote-TS. The state of Maryland has just spent $55 million for the ATM-like electronic voting devices to be used in the upcoming presidential election.
The AccuVote, acting just as a demonstration, offered two choices: "yes" and "no." Sen. Mikulski pressed "no." The machine registered "yes."

An elderly farmer from Perth-Andover is fighting a government rule that says his visitors must report personally to border patrol officers before going to his front door.
Nickolaj Pedersen's farm is on the border with the United States. The farm is in Canada but the road leading to it is in the U.S. That means Pedersen and anyone who visits him must cross the border twice to drive into Perth-Andover.

The Central Bank allowed the ruble to climb Tuesday for a third session to new six-month high against the dollar, prompting warnings from economists that hot money could be attracted by what looks like a one-way bet.
The Central Bank intervenes from time to time to cap the ruble by buying dollars to offset the upward pressure on the ruble caused by the inflow of dollars from rising oil export revenues. The exchange rate largely depends on where the Central Bank decides to put a floor under the dollar.

An international law expert from Harvard Law School says the U.S. government is guilty of war crimes for moving prisoners from Iraq to other countries.
The Washington Post reported Sunday that the CIA secretly transferred a dozen non-Iraqi prisoners out of Iraq in the past 18 months. The New York Times reported Tuesday the move is based on a new legal finding within the Bush administration that says the Geneva Conventions do not apply to foreign fighters in Iraq.
That's odd. The US thought the Geneva Convention applied to foreign fighters back when it was the Americans who were the foreign troops, fighting in France against the Germans.
