While the purpose of the mysterious call to Perle is still unclear, a source with knowledge of Franklin’s calls suggests that Franklin might have been trying to warn Perle and Chalabi that conflict between the counterintelligence community and the neoconservatives and the Chalabi camp was spinning out of control. Unbeknownst to Franklin, the FBI was listening.

As the body count from the tsunami rises, America's international reputation plummets to new depths, thanks to the Bush administration's smugly incompetent response.

So called "compassionate conservatives" (if ever there were an oxymoron this is it) would not spend more on the so called "inauguration" of a war criminal than they would spend on providing assistance to millions in need; so called "compassionate conservatives" would not lie about a threat faced by their nation in order to justify the invasion of another nation; so called "compassionate conservatives" would not allow banned weapons, such as napalm to be used in Fallujah, so called "compassionate conservatives" would not allow troops to be trained to believe that every Iraqi is a potential terrorist.

Last month, Angelos was sentenced to 55 years in prison for selling marijuana to undercover police officers. As U.S. District Judge Paul Cassell pointed out at sentencing, that's more time than he would have received if he had hijacked an airplane (25 years), beaten someone to death in a fight (13 years), or raped a 10-year-old child (11 years).

This month the National Academy of Sciences issued a 328-page report on gun-control laws. The big news is that the academy’s panel couldn’t identify any benefits of the decades-long effort to reduce crime and injury by restricting gun ownership. On December 16, 2004, an audio tape was released on the internet attributed to Osama bin Laden. At first listen, we had serious concerns about this tape, most notably that the speaker clearly had a different voice and while most of the content was old, the context was a significant shift from his previous positions.

That was good work. And I see how you dug and came up with the other 2. That was even better. But when you added 2 and 2 and got 4---that was your own inference. We can't go with that. You're going to have to find an expert who agrees that 2 plus 2 equals 4." The reporter says, "But 2 and 2 DOES equal 4." The editor says, "Yeah. I know. But we still need an expert to say so."

Protest Stolen Election 2004...

The Ohio presidential recount was officially terminated Tuesday, December 28. But the end comes amidst bitter dispute over official certification of impossible voter turnout numbers, over the refusal of Ohio's Republican Supreme Court Chief Justice to recuse himself from crucial court challenges involving his own re-election campaign, over the Republican Secretary of State's refusal to testify under subpoena, over apparent tampering with tabulation machines, over more than 100,000 provisional and machine-rejected ballots left uncounted, over major discrepancies in certified vote counts and turnout ratios, and over a wide range of unresolved disputes that continue to leave the true outcome of Ohio's presidential vote in serious doubt.

The story of Diego Garcia is shocking, almost incredible. A British colony lying midway between Africa and Asia in the Indian Ocean, the island is one of 64 unique coral islands that form the Chagos Archipelago, a phenomenon of natural beauty, and once of peace. Newsreaders refer to it in passing: "American B-52 and Stealth bombers last night took off from the uninhabited British island of Diego Garcia to bomb Iraq (or Afghanistan)." It is the word "uninhabited" that turns the key on the horror of what was done there. In the 1970s, the Ministry of Defence in London produced this epic lie: "There is nothing in our files about a population and an evacuation."

"Why would someone do that — give a gift to Clarence Thomas? Unless they are family members or really close friends, the only reason to give gifts is to influence the judge," said Mark Harrison, a Phoenix lawyer who heads the ABA's Commission on the Model Code of Judicial Conduct. And they promptly laid an egg. Whatever the secondary reasons for the Iraq war, the crucial factor in President Bush’s decision to attack was to help Israel. With support from Israel and America’s Jewish-Zionist lobby, and prodded by Jewish "neo-conservatives" holding high-level positions in his administration, President Bush — who was already fervently committed to Israel — resolved to invade and subdue one of Israel’s chief regional enemies.

Mujahideen forces attracted the US forces to the house by making them think that a number of fighters were barricaded in it.

It sounds like the plot of a fanciful Hollywood disaster movie. A dangerous volcano in the Canary Islands erupts, sends a giant tsunami travelling faster than a jet aircraft into the major population centres of America's east coast, killing tens of millions and wiping out New York and Washington DC. But unlike the eruption in the 1997 film Volcano (which threatened in its tagline that 'the coast is toast') scientists believe the threat from the volcano of Cumbre Vieja on the island of La Palma is real, and that it could send a massive slab of rock twice the size of the Isle of Man crashing into the Atlantic.

In short, the resistance against Bush’s illegal and immoral—and murderous:100,000 dead Iraqis and counting—occupation of Iraq is an al-Qaeda affair. Anybody who calls for “ending the state of injustice” in Iraq will be considered a terrorist and sock puppet for Osama. This will make it easier for Bush to pull off more Fallujahs and similar “operations” because Osama and Abu are evil and everybody knows you don’t compromise–or deal humanely—with evil on the scale perpetuated by al-Qaeda. You also get a hall pass when it comes to respecting international law.

The Federal Reserve has done a masterful job of distributing disinformation. Last year, they were scaring Americans by announcing that deflation was a threat. This year, they continue to announce “inflation is contained” so interest rates can be raised at a “measured pace”. The Vatican secretly issued instructions to the Catholic church in France not to return Jewish children to their families after the second world war, it emerged yesterday. The children were entrusted to the church's care to save them from the death camps. But if the parents survived the war and came forward to reclaim their sons or daughters, the children were only to be returned "provided [they] have not received baptism", the Vatican ordered.

The bitter, long-running controversy over the attitude of Pope Pius XII to the Holocaust has taken a new turn with the publication of diaries that prove he opposed the return of Jewish children to their parents after the Nazis' defeat.
Pope Pius XII's real name was Eugenio Pacelli, and prior to becoming Pope he was the Papal Nuncio to Germany, where he helped bring about the fall of the Weimer Republic and the installation of Hitler, in exchange for Hitler's promise to make Catholocism the official state religion of Nazi Germany. In his acceptance speech, Hitler described Christianity as, "essential elements for safeguarding the soul of the German people." Hitler, knowing who helped him to power, then stated, "We hope to improve our friendly relations with the Holy See." Just four months later, Hitler's government signed a concordat with the Vatican, a treaty that gave preferential legal status to the Catholic church above other churches. As Pope Pius XII, Pacelli continued the same deal with the Spanish Dictator Franco. When Franco finally established his dictatorship in Spain, Church property and all medieval privileges of the Church were restored. No other religion was allowed. Protestants and non-Catholics were sent to concentration camps for refusing to attend Catholic services. Freethinkers, democrats, Socialists and Communists were deprived of civil rights, imprisoned, or shot. When the Spanish republic was finally defeated by Catholic troops under Franco, would-be dictator of Spain, the pope sent a special message to the victors: "With great joy we address you, dearest sons of Catholic Spain, to express our paternal congratulations for the gift of peace and victory with which God has chosen to crown the Christian heroism of your faith ... We give you, our dear sons of Catholic Spain, our apostolic benediction." Spain supported both Hitler and Mussolini during the World War 2. Under Pius XII, the bishops of Germany stayed loyal to the Nazis until the very end of the war. - M. R.

Look at it this way. If another nation told lies about the United States, the invaded, then tried to legitimize the conquest with rigged elections for puppet candidates, would you sit still for it? - M. R.

Iraq's largest mainstream Sunni Muslim party pulled out of the election race yesterday, saying the violence plaguing areas north and west of Baghdad made a "free and fair vote" on January 30 impossible.

What if there really was no need for much - or even most - of the Cold War? What if, in fact, the Cold War had been kept alive for two decades based on phony WMD threats? What if, similarly, the War On Terror was largely a scam, and the administration was hyping it to seem larger-than-life?

The illusion is that the war is going well. The illusion is that our soldiers are strongly motivated and emotionally prepared for what they have volunteered to face. The illusion is that we are actually giving the Iraqis their freedom. The illusion is that we in America have that freedom to give. The illusion is that we are taking care of those who are making the greatest sacrifice. The illusion is that our government cares about any of the humanity involved in this war. The illusion is that this war is right.

The truth is different.

From his home in Lethen, a hamlet near Nairn, Mr Wolff believes the internet, and particularly the increasing availability of broadband, can be used to set up a network of like-minded, capable and keen workers. In so doing, some of the jobs that are being offshored to low cost labour countries could be saved. It is not so much offshoring as home-shoring, a phrase that is starting to catch on in the US at least.

As The Times noted in a recent editorial, "The last time Mr. Rumsfeld tried to force himself into the intelligence collection and analysis business, he created a boutique C.I.A. in the bowels of the Pentagon under the command of Douglas Feith, the under secretary of defense for policy. The office essentially fabricated a link between Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden - a link used to justify the Iraq invasion, and one that Mr. Rumsfeld was not getting from the C.I.A."
PAY ATTENTION TO THIS. THE CLAIMED LINK BETWEEN SADDAM AND OSAMA DID NOT COME FROM THE CIA BUT FROM THE PENTAGON OFFICE RUN BY DOUGLAS FEITH; THE SAME OFFICE NOW KNOWN TO HAVE BEEN INFILTRATED BY ISRAELI SPIES. - M. R.

During a live television broadcast the Queen was seen showing Neil Kinnock and other MPs around Buckingham Palace. Mr. Kinnock remarked that it was great to see Queen Victoria's diaries, "and in her own handwriting". The Queen then told the truth with millions watching, that Queen Victoria's diaries had all been destroyed because she had upset the British establishment. The diaries were all rewritten, taking out the most important bits where Queen Victoria recorded every sitting she had with the medium John Brown when she made contact with Prince Albert.

This afternoon, an attorney representing the Kerry/Edwards presidential campaign filed two important motions to preserve and augment evidence of alleged election fraud in the November election. The motions were filed in the matter titled Yost et al. v. Delaware County Board of Elections and J. Kenneth Blackwell (Civil Action No. C2-04-1139) with the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio. The document is titled "Motion Of Intervenor-Defendant Kerry-Edwards 2004, Inc. For A Preservation Order And For A Leave To Take Limited Expedited Discovery."

Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell has requested a protective order to prevent him from being interviewed as part of an unusual court challenge of the presidential vote.

Colin Powell invoked it before the invasion, telling aides that if the US went into Iraq "you're going to be owning this place". John Kerry pledged his allegiance to it during the first presidential debate, saying: "Now, if you break it, you made a mistake. It's the wrong thing to do. But you own it."
The analogy does not hold up. "We" didn't break "it", Bush and the Neocons did, but their goal is to force We The People (including the millions who told them NOT TO INVADE) to have to pay for the breakage.

This, of course, is something all americans should oppose. The war was illegal, violating both international and US law, and We The People are not obligated to pay the costs of an illegal war launched without our permission. If someone has to pay the costs, it should be those individuals who hijacked the US military for a personal adventure. Let them write the checks out of their own personal funds. And if the flag-waving morons who thought this war was a good thing want to chip in, that is fine as well. But those of us who knew the war was wrong from the start and opposed it are NOT obligated to pay for either the war itself, or its aftermath. - M. R.

Asian officials conceded Monday that they failed to issue broad public warnings immediately after a massive undersea earthquake in Indonesia, which could have saved countless lives from the subsequent giant waves that smashed into nine countries as far away as Africa.

One reads in the papers that the Pentagon expects the war in Iraq to continue till 2010. Donald Rumsfeld will not guarantee that it will be over by 2009. How many dead and maimed Americans by then? How many sad obituaries? How many full pages in the papers with pictures of all the casualties? Why?

Just my luck: I finally get to be a senior citizen only to discover that the President considers my longevity a grave threat to the nation. Apparently, my collecting Social Security checks for as long as I have left on this Earth is going to help bankrupt the economy and/or be an unbearable burden on young Americans.
