A damning minute leaked to a Sunday newspaper reveals that in July 2002, a few weeks after meeting George Bush at his ranch in Crawford, Texas, Mr Blair summoned his closest aides for what amounted to a council of war. The minute reveals the head of British intelligence reported that President Bush had firmly made up his mind to invade Iraq and overthrow Saddam Hussein, adding that "the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy".

A Guardian story on "The ricin ring that never was" has been pulled from the newspaper's website, for what are said to be 'legal reasons'. The story, by Duncan Campbell (the investigative writer, not the Guardian journalist of the same name), analysed the collapse of the UK's 'ricin conspiracy' trial, and reported Porton Down evidence that had made it clear that claims of mass poisoning attacks had no basis.

Is the current property boom an unwelcome replay of the dot.com bubble of the late Nineties and destined to burst in the same way, showering a lot of people with a lot of pain?
When the US economy slipped into decline, people started borrowing to sustain their previous life styles, assuming they would repay the loans when the economy improved. But the economy didn't improve, and cannot improve with manufacturing headed for tax-friendly shores, and Bush borrowing and spending cash on war. So, home owners cashed out their equity to pay off credit cards. Now the equity is gone, home owners are flipping real estate back and forth (see comment about property being resold in the same day) to run up the price. This creates an artificial equity on which yet more cash out loans can be taken.
But like any other financial craze, the good times roll only so long as new money can be brought into the bottom of the system. Low interest loans are the lure to new buyers, but the problem isn't that people do not want to take advantage of the new loans, it's that they are less than sure they can make the payments as the economy continues to decline.
There is a phrase to keep in mind. It's "negative equity". That is what happens when a home-owner owes more on the house than the house is worth. Even selling the property does not erase the debt (remember that bankruptcy reform bill).
When the real estate bubble bursts, all those property owners who flipped up the value of their homes and then cashed out that artificial equity are going to be in a real mess. - M. R.

They earn their pay telling stories about Iraqi WMDs, and "Al Qaeda", and the "suicides" of people who seemed very happy but just happened to be in possession of damning evidence, and rotten meat sold by supermarkets, and GOP orgies, and how 300 witnesses to a missile killing a jumbo jet didn't really see a missile because they were all drunk and how an astrologer has predicted the next "Al Qaeda" terrorist attack.
What the mainstream media wants it to be able to go on lying and make money from it, and nobody will pay to be lied to when the truth is out there for free. - M. R.

If Novak is the first person in the chain who did NOT have clearance for this information, he is guilty. He could probably mitigate his punishment by revealing who in that chain gave him the information. THAT person signed a SECURITY clearance form clearly laying out the penalties for revealing classified information.

Newsweek has learned that investigators probing supperlobbyist Jack Abramoff's finances have found some of the money meant for a charity he started for inner-city kids went instead to fight the Palestinian intifada.
