October 31, 2006You've probably never heard of Stayman, but indicted former lobbyist and Republican insider Jack Abramoff knew him well. Abramoff and his lobbying team went to great lengths to oust Stayman from his State Department post, even dubbing the expulsion the "Stayman Project." Why? Because years earlier as an official in the Interior Department, Stayman led an effort to help exploited workers toiling in Chinese-owned sweatshops in a U.S. commonwealth.
Since the 1980s, the tiny Northern Mariana Islands in the Pacific and particularly the main island of Saipan have attracted numerous Chinese garment manufacturers. The Chinese loved this arrangement because it allowed their clothes to carry the label "Made in the U.S.A.," and shipments from the islands didn't face the import quotas or duties that existed at the time. Air Force said to seek $50 bln emergency funds
The U.S. Air Force is asking the Pentagon's leadership for a staggering $50 billion in emergency funding for fiscal 2007 -- an amount equal to nearly half its annual budget, defense analyst Loren Thompson of the Lexington Institute said on Tuesday.
Another source familiar with the Air Force plans said the extra funds would help pay to transport growing numbers of U.S. soldiers being killed and wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan. So far the poppy-eradication program, largely funded by the US, hasn't made a dent. Last year, it claimed to have destroyed 15,380 hectares of poppies, up from 4,850 the year before; but during the same period overall poppy cultivation soared from 104,000 hectares to 165,000.

Mind Game III - Full Metal Lockout: The myth of accessible health care
In a report issued this past May, the GAO -- the non-partisan investigative wing of Congress -- determined that the DOD could not provide reasonable assurance that all servicemembers who needed referrals were getting them. Of the mere 5% of servicemembers who answered positively to the PTSD screening questions, 78% were not referred for further mental health evaluation.
The fact that we're not treating our returning vets better than this is unconscionable.
The question is, why, precisely, does the US military appear to be discouraging post-war health screenings for our vets? - M. R. We were able to buy two Nedap voting computers from a Dutch municipality. This website shows how we found out how it works, how we wrote software for it and how, when given brief access to the devices at any time before the election, we can gain complete and virtually undetectable control over election results. It also shows how we discovered that radio emanations from an unmodified ES3B can be received at several meters distance and be used to tell who votes what.

KFDM continues to get complaints from Jefferson County voters who say the electronic voting machines are not registering their votes correctly.
Friday night, KFDM reported about people who had cast straight Democratic ticket ballots, but the touch-screen machines indicated they had voted a straight Republican ticket.
Some of those voters including Lamar University professor, Dr. Bruce Drury, believe the problem is a programming error.
BULL BISCUITS!
Anyone who understands programming knows that it would take an intentional act of will to program the voting machine to recognize a straight Democratic party vote and transform it to a Republican party vote. For one thing, the voting machines have no inherent mechanism (or need) to identify any candidate with any particular party. Hence the ability to switch a Democratic party-line vote to a Republican party-line vote requires additional code not normally in the system. Folks, they are stealing your election and your country right before your eyes. Real errors would produce results that went both directions equally. Just as many errors should favor Democrats as Republicans. But all the "glitches" and "programming errors" favor the GOP. Hence, there is design and intention evident in the results. "For example, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed described the design of planned attacks of buildings inside the U.S. and how operatives were directed to carry them out. That is valuable information for those of us who have the responsibility to protect the American people. He told us the operatives had been instructed to ensure that the explosives went off at a high -- a point that was high enough to prevent people trapped above from escaping. "
CLICK HERE FOR BUSH MAKING THIS STATEMENT
There you have it. President Bush had admitted what the eyewitnesses reported on 9-11; that there were bombs inside the World Trade Towers. Of course, Bush pins the blame for the bombs on Al Qaeda, which is sort of accurate when you consider that most of Al Qaeda is a creation of US and Israeli intelligence. But in trying to explain away the eyewitness reports of bombs, Bush has dug himself into a deeper logic hole. How did these "Al Qaeda" bombers manage to spend at least a week (according to witnesses who heard and saw them) working inside the buildings under the noses of Bush's cousin and brother, who were in charge of security for the World Trade Center? Security at the towers was tight following the 1993 attempted bombing. You could not simply walk into an elevator unless you could document employment or a meeting. Yet as one can tell from the tell-tale marks left by the cutter charges, these preparations took a great deal of time and materials to carry out. Why did these "Al Qaeda" bombers go to the extra effort to drop all three buildings straight down instead of toppling them sideways, maximizing the damage? If Al Qaeda succeeded in bombing the buildings, why bother with the airplanes? Why bother hiding the bombing itself, if it was truly the work of terrorists out to make a statement? In admitting the bombs, Bush has opened up the inquiry to include the very great amount of incriminating evidence found near the airplanes linking the attacks to Arab nations, versus the total absence of any such evidence near the bombs. This contrast is ONLY explained if the evidence left with the airplanes was planted, to frame someone. Why did it take 5 years for the government to admit what was obvious to everyone right from the start; that explosives were used to bring down the buildings, unless the original plan was not to admit to the bombs in the first place? Dubya, in his pathetic attempt to pin the blame for the now-admitted bombs on Al Qaeda, has created far more logical problems then he has solved. - M. R. Make no mistake about it: at the start of the new century, the United States is still a superpower. But it is a superpower that faces tough competition from outside and difficulties within. The feedback effects involved in globalization are especially intense for the US economy -- so much so that large parts of the US workforce are now standing with their backs against the wall.
The rise of Asia has only led to a relative decline of the US national economy. At least so far. But for many blue- and white-collar workers, this decline is already absolute because they have less of everything than they used to. Basically, that makes Walker the nation's accountant-in-chief. And the accountant-in-chief's professional opinion is that the American public needs to tell Washington it's time to steer the nation off the path to financial ruin.

Why should they stop? They have no reason to stop. Unless and until you give them one. - M. R. UN AGENCIES EXPRESS OPPOSITION TO US BLOCKADE OF CUBA...
For the younger readers, here is a bit of background on why the mighty United States still "fears" tiny little Cuba.
In 1940, Fulgencio Batista won the Presidency of Cuba in an election tainted with massive vote fraud. Batista was very popular with American interests such as United Fruit and PepsiCo to whom he sold Cuba's agricultural produce at below-market prices, and with organized crime, which built the infamous casinos in Havana. Batista lost the election of 1944 because of his unpopular policies, but ran again in 1952. Polls showed him in last place. With the backing of his American supporters, Batista staged a coup and took over the government. He held elections in 1954 and easily won, being the only candidate on the ballot. Batista continued to impose tighter and tighter controls on the increasingly angry Cuban people until finally forced to leave office, and fleeing Cuba on January 1, 1959. Cuba came under control of revolutionary leader Fidel Castro, a former lawyer. Having studied in the United States when young, Castro approached the US to normalize relations, but US interests still wanted favorably trade deals, and Castro refused. Cuba's produce would be sold at prevailing international prices. Castro also wanted the Mafia's activities in Havana, in particular the excesses like the "donkey shows" (women performing sexual acts with animals before an audience), shut down. So, the US decided to blockade Cuba and cut off their trade, to starve the new government into surrendering Cuba back into the hands of the favored US thug, Batista. Castro refused. The irony is that it was this very blockade which forced Cuba into their relationship with the USSR, giving the soviets a key base right at America's doorstep and handing the US a disastrous foreign policy blunder. Working with the remnant's of Batista's regime, now holed up in Miami, the CIA and Mafia began to plan a counter-revolution to place Cuba back under Batista's rule. Claiming that the Cuban people were having second thoughts about Castro, the CIA enlisted President John F. Kennedy's assistance for an invasion, as well as support from prominent businessmen such as George H. W. Bush, who provided three ships for logistical support. The claim was that the people of Cuba would rush down to the beach to join the invaders in overthrowing Castro. In reality, the Cubans preferred Castro to anyone the US was going to back, rushed down to the beach at the Bay of Pigs, and pounded the invaders into the sand. When JFK realized he had been lied to regarding the popular sentiment on Cuba, he pulled the plug on the invasion. The USSR responded to the attempted invasion of their ally by plaving nuclear ICBMs in Cuba, triggering the Cuban missile crisis, and bringing the world to the brink of nuclear war over cheap sugar and donkey shows. Kennedy fired CIA director Allen Dulles for the Bay of Pigs fiasco, and shortly thereafter, Dulles sat on the Warren Commission "investigating" Kennedy's assassination. There was a brief attempt to link the assassination to Cuba in order to build support for a new invasion, but President Lyndon Johnson was well aware that the USSR had pulled their nuclear missiles out of Cuba with the express understanding that another invasion would result in an immediate nuclear strike by the USSR on the US. At the time, the USSR had an advantage in l;ong-range ICBMs and a working anti-0missile system as well, so Johnson quickly shifted the blame to the "lone nut" Oswald. Since that time, the US has maintained a blockade against Cuba not because the island nation is any kind of a threat to the US but because it is an embarrassment. Little Cuba has withstood the covert might of the United States for half a century now, a beacon to the world that the US is not always able to select who will rule other peoples' countries. The Cuban blockade is not a military necessity; it is a grudge, written in steel and signed in the blood of the Cuban people. And it is an antiquity the world can live without. - M. R. Although well known attorney Alan Dershowitz claimed that Lipstadts victory was the most important courtroom defeat for Holocaust denial in recent history, Irving didnt lose his case because of any inherent flaw in Holocaust revisionism.7 For one thing, the maverick British historian, who represented himself in court, is not a lawyer, and he squared off against a very talented legal team. But just as importantly, David Irving himself has stated that he is not an authority on the Jewish tragedy of WWII or Holocaust revisionism. Indeed, he has admitted that he has not even read important Holocaust revisionist studies--most notably, Arthur Butzs The Hoax of the Twentieth Century.8
Even the trial judge, Mr. Justice Charles Gray, pointed out in his final ruling that Irving was at a disadvantage because he could not cross-examine Lipstadt in regard to his claim that there was an international Jewish conspiracy to silence him. Irving has been greatly hampered, the British magistrate noted, in presenting this aspect of the case by the unexpected decision of the Defendants, in full knowledge of the allegations which Irving was making about the conduct of Lipstadt, not to call her to give evidence and to be cross-examined by Irving. It goes without saying that the Defendants were perfectly entitled to adopt this tactic but it did place Irving, acting in person, at a disadvantage.9 But Dov S. Zakheim, who was a senior Pentagon official under Rumsfeld, said he thinks this is simply the beginning of a new phase in the U.S. effort in Iraq.
"Everyone knows that if we leave Iraq, not only will that country have little hope of regaining any form of stability, we will likely destabilize the entire region," he said. So the current turmoil reflects the "recognition in all policy circles that we are about to enter a new phase." The war cannot be won for the simple reason that all of the stated objectives were lies.
We cannot rid Iraq of weapons of mass destruction because they did not have any. We cannot harm Al Qaeda by attacking Iraq because Iraq was already an enemy of Al Qaeda. We cannot punish Iraq for 9-11 because Iraq had nothing to do with 9-11. Therefore, victory in terms of the publicly stated objectives is impossible. WE cannot win this war. We can only lose it, which is exactly what Bush is doing right now. Thousands of Americans dead or crippled. Thousands more Iraqi dead as well. The region poisoned with depleted uranium. Trillions of dollars spent in an economy that cannot afford such a drain. This war fought to make a few rich men richer still is a disaster for the rest of us. Yet people like Dov Zachiem will still struggle to find new ways to sell us more of these wars. - M. R. IF you happened to be up around dawn on Tuesday, you could witness the death rattle of our adventure in Iraq live on CNN. Zalmay Khalilzad, the American ambassador, and Gen. George W. It is one of the tragic effects of Zionism that a section of the Jewish people, who have been historically associated with the struggle for human dignity and social progress against all forms of racism, backwardness and oppression, should now adopt methods and ideologies indistinguishable from those of fascists and anti-Semites in an attempt to intimidate those opposed to Israels crimes against the Lebanese and Palestinian peoples.

House minority leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), in an interview with Lesley Stahl of CBS News, said impeachment would be "off the table" if Democrats take over the House of Representatives in November, calling it a "waste of time."
She couldn't be more wrong, and most Americans know it. The district attorney prosecuting three Duke lacrosse players accused of raping a woman at a team party said during a court hearing Friday that he still hasn't interviewed the accuser about the facts of the case.
Does this strike anyone as slightly weird procedure, or is it just me?
Back in the 90s, when rape was the feminist banner, false rape accusations became the single most often falsely reported crime in the US, according to the FBI. NOW lobbied that mere accusation should be proof of guilt, and that DNA tests should not be used as they damaged the credibility of women. Men were sent to jail on accusations without proof. Cities were bankrupted when those men were finally freed on the basis of DNA tests or confessing accusers. In one infamous case, Gary Dotson went to jail for six years until Cathleen Crowell Webb confessed that she made up the rape story to keep her parents from finding out she was having sex with her boyfriend. NOW had championed her case and lobbied for the strictest penalties for Gary. When the hoax was revealed, NOW turned on Webb, accusing her of selling out to a conspiracy to harm women and support rapists. It was all typical of the fear mongering on which many of the male-bash feminists (as opposed to the gender-equity feminists) built their careers and fortunes. Rape hoaxes became instant keys to celebrity status. In 1991, Catherine Comins, Assistant Dean Of Student Life At Vassar, suggested that false rape charges were a good thing for men to have to deal with. Davis California was on the verge of imposing a male-only curfew when the "skateboarding rapists" were revealed to be a hoax. Then there was the infamous Tawana Brawley hoax, which helped to make Al Sharpton a household name. I had thought that those dark says were behind us. but as the Duke case continues to unfold, I see the same warning sings of a hoax. The idea that charges have been brought against the lacrosse players without a formal statement being taken from the accuser worries me greatly. Something is wrong with this case. - M. R. New Jersey State Sen. Ellen Karcher (D., Freehold) wants restaurant patrons to eat healthier; a good idea, considering Americans spend 40 percent of their food budget dining out.
She wants to ban trans fats, the hydrogenated goo that clogs arteries and contributes to obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Restaurants use it to deep-fry, bake pastries, and extend food shelf life. But her recent proposal didn't bring her "thanks for the concern." Instead she has endured statewide ridicule, defensive outrage from businesses, and even death threats. Halliburton scored almost $1.2 billion in revenue from contracts related to Iraq in the third quarter of 2006, leading one analyst to comment: "Iraq was better than expected... Overall, there is nothing really to question or be skeptical about. I think the results are very good."
Very good indeed. An estimated 655,000 dead Iraqis, over 3,000 dead coalition troops, billions stolen from Iraq's coffers, a country battered by civil war - but Halliburton turned a profit, so the results are very good. Very good certainly for Vice President Dick Cheney, who resigned from Halliburton in 2000 with a $33.7 million retirement package (not bad for roughly four years of work). In a stunning conflict of interest, Cheney still holds more than 400,000 stock options in the company. Why pursue diplomacy when you can rake in a personal fortune from war? We know that the Israelis used American "bunker-buster" bombs on Hizbollah's Beirut headquarters. We know that they drenched southern Lebanon with cluster bombs in the last 72 hours of the war, leaving tens of thousands of bomblets which are still killing Lebanese civilians every week. And we now know - after it first categorically denied using such munitions - that the Israeli army also used phosphorous bombs, weapons which are supposed to be restricted under the third protocol of the Geneva Conventions, which neither Israel nor the United States have signed.
But scientific evidence gathered from at least two bomb craters in Khiam and At-Tiri, the scene of fierce fighting between Hizbollah guerrillas and Israeli troops last July and August, suggests that uranium-based munitions may now also be included in Israel's weapons inventory - and were used against targets in Lebanon. In a stealth maneuver, President Bush has signed into law a provision which, according to Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont), will actually encourage the President to declare federal martial law (1). It does so by revising the Insurrection Act, a set of laws that limits the President's ability to deploy troops within the United States. The Insurrection Act (10 U.S.C.331 -335) has historically, along with the Posse Comitatus Act (18 U.S.C.1385), helped to enforce strict prohibitions on military involvement in domestic law enforcement. With one cloaked swipe of his pen, Bush is seeking to undo those prohibitions.
Public Law 109-364, or the "John Warner Defense Authorization Act of 2007" (H.R.5122) (2), which was signed by the commander in chief on October 17th, 2006, in a private Oval Office ceremony, allows the President to declare a "public emergency" and station troops anywhere in America and take control of state-based National Guard units without the consent of the governor or local authorities, in order to "suppress public disorder." An editorial in the Egyptian opposition daily Al-Gomhuria says the latest developments are evidence not only of the failures on the military and security levels, but more importantly the failure of the effort in Baghdad to stigmatize all opponents of the occupation as terrorists. This is a great victory for the national resistance, the editorialist says it is also an incentive for the Iraqi population to continue "with all strength and defiance" on the road of resistance, taking care to prioritize national unity at the same time, "lest the occupation be forced out the door of nationalism, only to return by the window of factionalism."
