"No You Can't" - Broad Coalition Rallying Against Obama Center

The community organizer has managed to inspire unusual unity:

Fiscal conservatives worried about our insolvent state object to how some $200 million was quietly appropriated in Illinois’ recently enacted budget for roadways around the center. Federal taxpayers will reimburse Illinois for 80% of that money, which was the subject of our recent Wall Street Journal article.

Local folks have long objected, claiming the Obama Foundation, which is building the center, isn’t directing enough jobs and benefits towards them. No surprise. When I visited the site a few weeks ago it looked like most of the work was being done by the usual Chicago union white guys. The Nation earlier criticized the absence of some form of community benefits agreement.

Many University of Chicago graduates, who serve as de facto guardians of the architectural and intellectual standards of the neighborhood, don’t want a scar on the area. Some are behind the federal lawsuit now pending to stop construction.

Yemen’s Hodeida Offensive: Once Avoidable, Now Imminent

The coalition’s strategy seems to be to seal the Houthis into Hodeida and squeeze.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Pompeo knew he was signing off on a lie, to protect US weapons sales:

Pompeo Lied to Congress About Yemen To Protect Arms Sales ("Originally appeared on The American Conservative.)

The article goes on to state:

Mike Pompeo’s certification earlier this month that the Saudi coalition was working to reduce harm to civilians in Yemen was an obvious sham. According to a new report in The Wall Street Journal, Pompeo made the decision to lie for the Saudis and Emiratis because he feared it would hurt arms sales:

Mr. Pompeo overruled concerns from most of the State Department specialists involved in the debate who were worried about the rising civilian death toll in Yemen. Those who objected included specialists in the region and in military affairs. He sided with his legislative affairs team after they argued that suspending support could undercut plans to sell more than 120,000 precision-guided missiles to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, according to a classified State Department memo and people familiar with the debate."

Foreign policy in this country is never about protecting "We the People"; it is about protecting the wealth of "Those the Monied", as in defence contractors, who contribute so lavishly, overtly, and covertly, to national campaigns.

And if your national Presstitute Warrespondents has not covered the plight of Yemen, under the B.O.Y.'s watch, the following images will make clear why not: (Warning: very graphic)

Images: Yemeni kids slaughtered and maimed for life by Saudi bombing runs

Images: Yemeni kids starving through the US-enabled Saudi blockades of Yemen's ports

Images: Yemeni kids dying from cholera outbreak

If you nearly lost your breakfast in looking at this, there is still hope that you may be somewhat human. But what we need to do, on a national scale, is very peacefully, and logically, call this government out on what amounts to aiding and abetting war criminals in Saudi Arabia, in their genocide of Yemen.

In the Wikipedia article about him, I find it thoroughly astonishing that this man identifies himself as a Christian, while performing as the "Assistant Merchant of Death in Chief" for his military industrial complex buddies. Perhaps, he sees no conflict whatsoever; I have to wonder how he cannot.

THE U.S. GOVERNMENT can monitor journalists under a foreign intelligence law that allows invasive spying and operates outside the traditional court system, according to newly released documents.

Targeting members of the press under the law, known as the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, requires approval from the Justice Department’s highest-ranking officials, the documents show.

In two 2015 memos for the FBI, the attorney general spells out “procedures for processing Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act applications targeting known media entities or known members of the media.” The guidelines say the attorney general, the deputy attorney general, or their delegate must sign off before the bureau can bring an application to the secretive panel of judges that approves monitoring under the 1978 act, which governs intelligence-related wiretapping and other surveillance carried out domestically and against U.S. persons abroad.

Pompeo: US Preparing a ‘Series of Actions’ Against Venezuela

Citing the US desire to increase pressure “against the Venezuelan leadership folks,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says that in the days to come, the administration will announce a series of actions against Venezuela.

Pompeo declined to offer any specifics, which is probably going to lead to speculation of something major coming, since recent reports of US policy toward Venezuela has been uniformly hostile.

President Trump threatened to attack Venezuela back in August of 2017, and this summer reports are that he’d repeatedly had to be talked out of such attacks. Early this month, the administration was confirmed to be engaging in secret coup talks with Venezuelan rebels.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I would think that, with all the wars, present and coming, in which and with which the US military is embroiled, the plan may well be destabilization and regime change in Caracas, courtesy of hired rebels and mercs.

As Afghan Military Deaths Soar, Officials Struggle to Keep Toll Secret

The last official figures on Afghan military deaths came out in 2016. 22 soldiers were killed on an average day, and this was so bad that Afghan and US officials decided that death tolls would subsequently be kept secret

Things have just gotten worse, and 22 deaths would be a comparatively mild day compared to media reports on the death tolls in recent days. In the past week, the average day has seen roughly 57 deaths among Afghan security forces.

The Pentagon’s recent decision to more heavily publicize Taliban body counts, to try to sell the war to the administration, likely comes from the same place as the decision to keep Afghan military deaths secret, as this will just reveal the extent of the conflict’s failure.

Webmaster's Commentary:

So let's call this one as what it is: a 17-year, unmitigated disaster.

IF US and NATO officials had one brain cell to share on this issue, they would immediately withdraw all Coalition troops as quickly as it would be safe to do this, then negotiate with whatever government was left standing in Kabul for the pipeline, rare earth, and opium poppy rights.

Ah, but of course, they won't, because such actions... would actually be logical.

Army misses 2018 recruiting goal, which hasn't happened since 2005

The Army fell short of its recruiting goal for 2018, missing its mark for the first time since 2005 as it looks to grow its force strength in the face of growing threats from competing world powers such as Russia and China.

The Army has launched a large-scale review of its recruiting practices, senior service officials said Friday. The service will pour millions of dollars into revamping recruiting facilities and bolster its recruiting force after falling about 6,500 recruits short of its goal for fiscal year 2018, which will end Sept. 30. The Army had hoped to enlist 76,500 recruits in 2018, a goal that was lowered from 80,000 in April after more soldiers than expected elected to remain in the service.

On rare occasion a story is unearthed in the mainstream media which demonstrates in stunning clarity how major foreign policy decisions are really made in Washington, especially when it comes to waging perpetual war in the Middle East often under the official rhetorical guise of “protecting civilians”.

A bombshell Wall Street Journal report details a leaked classified memo which shows Secretary of State Mike Pompeo decided to continue US military involvement in the Saudi war on Yemen in order to preserve a massive $2 billion weapons deal with Riyadh.

Webmaster's Commentary:

These days, the governance in this country, is never about really, honestly taking care of the needs and concerns of We the People; it is about how financially morbidly obese defense corporations can squeeze more money out of wars to which the US government should have never committed our military in the bloody first place.

Colombia is producing more cocaine now than it ever has, according to a new report by Bloomberg. The amount of land planted with coca shrubs is up 17% last year, rising to 171,000 hectares, which surpasses levels prior to US president Bill Clinton’s "Plan Colombia" counter-narcotics program.

Almost all of the world's cocaine comes from Colombia, Bolivia and Peru. Colombia produces more than half of the total cocaine in the world. Under Clinton’s plan, the aid provided to Colombia over the course of the last six decades was "stepped up dramatically". Colombia has repaid the world by cranking out record levels of cocaine - probably not the solution Clinton, or other advocates for aid-giving, were seeking.

Colombia's 171,000 hectares is enough raw material to produce 1,379 tons of cocaine, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. It’s also more than triple the output of five years ago.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The alleged "War on Drugs" is, and always has been, a complete sham.

There are too many people, and institutions, making obscene amounts of money from the drug trade, for those in power to ever want it to end.

It looks like we’re headed for a brave new world where all citizens are rated on their loyalty to the state and are punished for wandering from its narrative.
Call it the gamification of repression.

In China, the supposedly communist state—in fact, it is an advanced form of crony capitalist authoritarianism that Marx would have disapproved—is busy setting up a rating system for all citizens. According to a paper written by an academic at the Lebanese American University in Beirut, Lebanon, scores are based on professional conduct, corruption, type of products bought, peers’ own scores, and tax evasion.

The author left something out, however. This social credit system will also be used to marginalize and stigmatize those who criticize the state.

China’s nominally communist government says the system and its massive database will allow the trustworthy to roam freely under heaven while making it hard for the discredited to take a single step.

Webmaster's Commentary:

AND... such a "social credit scoring system" is already happening here in the US, courtesy of Apple.

Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to Russia has revealed his hope that the US will not impose sanctions on his country for its plans to buy the S-400 missile defence system from Moscow, reported on Friday.

Raed Ben Khalid Qarmali made his comment when asked if Saudi Arabia is going ahead with its plan to purchase the system, just one day after America imposed sanctions on China for a similar deal with the Russians.

“I hope that no one imposes sanctions on us,” said Qarmali. He noted that 14 memorandums were signed during the visit of Saudi King Salman to Moscow, including four military deals. “The implementation of three has just started,” the ambassador added.

The Trump administration imposed sanctions on China after Beijing bought aircraft and other military equipment from Russia. The Chinese government described the American move as a “flagrant violation of the rules of international relations.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

Because Saudi Arabia's Royal leader, the B.O.Y. (AKA, the Butcher of Yemen) is so idolized by President Trump as "a guy who can get things done in the Middle East (like the genocide of the Yemeni people), I would doubt seriously that President Trump will have a problem with this; but he may well surprise me.

At least 25 people are dead and 53 wounded after an army parade in the southwestern Iranian city of Ahvaz came under attack by militants on Saturday, according to state media.

Nearly half of the dead are members of the Revolutionary Guards, according to state news agencies, making this one of the worst attacks ever on the elite force.

While the Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack, there are conflicting reports over who is behind it. A spokesman for Iran's Revolutionary Guards, Ramezan Sharif, said the attackers were funded by Sunni arch rival Saudi Arabia.

"Those who opened fire on civilians and the armed forces have links to the Ahvazi movement," Guards spokesman Ramezan Sharif told ISNA.

"They are funded by Saudi Arabia and attempted to cast a shadow over the Iranian armed forces."

Zarif vowed Iran would "respond swiftly and decisively in defence of Iranian lives". -France24

Webmaster's Commentary:

It appears that the "Usual Suspects" (read: the US, Israel, and Saudi Arabia) appear to be hell-bent on starting a war against Iran, and I am deeply concerned that this attack against the Revolutionary Guards being one of the opening salvos, other than economic, in that war.

I would like to strongly caution those who believe it would be such a "good idea" to do this, to remember the degree of Russia's assistance to Bashar Al Assad in Syria, where Russian intervention was successful in turning the tide against the rebels there.

So not believe for one moment, should Iran be attacked, that Russia (and ultimately, China) will fail to come to its aid, as evidenced by the following:

2015: Russia and Iran sign a military cooperation pact

And we need, also, to look at Russia's strengthening of ties to Iran this year, during the following meetings:

Russia and Iran deepen ties to challenge Trump and the United States

July, 2018: Russia and China have Tehran's Back

So, a global war against Iran, featuring the US, NATO, Israel, and Saudi Arabia on the one hand, and China, Russia, and Iran on the other?!?

The kind of devastation such a war would bring to this planet, is both unimaginable, and most probably irrevocable.

Why These Five States Would Be Better Independent Countries

States would sink or swim on their own merits. No help from DC. And no interference either…

Plus, not a single US state would even be close to the smallest country on earth, by population or land area. Much tinier countries do just fine on their own.

California has plenty of reason to become its own country. It is the most progressive state without much in common with DC or many other states.

Californians are still being prosecuted by the feds for owning state-legal marijuana dispensaries. California wants liberal immigration policy, while the US government thinks otherwise.

It’s also the most populous state. It would be the 36th largest country on earth by population. Larger than Canada, Saudi Arabia, and Poland. Slightly smaller than Spain, Argentina, and Ukraine.

California has the 5th largest economy in the world. That’s ahead of Great Britain despite having less than 2/3 the population.

GOOGLE BOSSES HAVE forced employees to delete a confidential memo circulating inside the company that revealed explosive details about a plan to launch a censored search engine in China, The Intercept has learned.
The memo, authored by a Google engineer who was asked to work on the project, disclosed that the search system, codenamed Dragonfly, would require users to log in to perform searches, track their location — and share the resulting history with a Chinese partner who would have “unilateral access” to the data.

The memo was shared earlier this month among a group of Google employees who have been organizing internal protests over the censored search system, which has been designed to remove content that China’s authoritarian Communist Party regime views as sensitive, such as information about democracy, human rights, and peaceful protest.

Webmaster's Commentary:

How Google does this here in the US is, for the moment, far more subtle, by using a combination of algorithms which can get a blog pushed so far down in search results, that it becomes deplatformed.

Couple that with a monetary service which used to take contributions for various blogs, like Pay Pal, but suddenly refuses to do so, and you have a website devoid of both viewers and operational cash.

Just hours after Beijing called off trade talks with the US in the biggest escalation of the trade feud between the two nations, the war of words between China and the US ratcheted up on Saturday, when Beijing lashed out again at Washington, saying that China’s decision to buy fighter jets and missile systems from Russia is "a normal act of cooperation between sovereign countries" and the United States has "no right to interfere", defense ministry spokesman Wu Qian said on Saturday.

"The U.S. approach is a blatant violation of the basic norms of international relations, a full manifestation of hegemony, and a serious breach of the relations between the two countries and their two militaries," Wu said in a notice posted on the Chinese defense ministry’s official Wechat account according to Reuters.

He also warned that the US would face "consequences" if it did not immediately revoke the sanctions.

Webmaster's Commentary:

President Trump, a word, please; I understand that even the most elemental study of history bores you to tears, but I would like you to consider the following dark, brutal reality: those individuals who do not understand history, are doomed to repeat it.

I would like to suggest that you take a look at the economic realities in both Germany and Japan before the advent of World War II, where ultimately trade wars became shooting wars.

Even the cabal of warhawks with which you have managed to surround yourself, to the utter and complete detriment and contempt of any efforts toward peaceful resolutions of geopolitical issues, cannot possibly be so ham-fistedly, pig-headedly stupid as to desire war with China and Russia at this moment in our military's history.

And I say this, because at this point in its history, our Military does not have the weaponry; the troop strength; the manufacturing, or the money to ensure a positive outcome to a conventional war with either, or both countries.

Which means mushroom clouds, Mr. President.

Customer Leaves A One-Star Review For Restaurant, Unluckily For Her, The Owner Remembers Her Too Well (15 Pics)

Running a successful restaurant has become a whole lot more difficult in recent years, with a surge in competition meaning only the very best survive, and customer power at an all-time high.
One bad review online isn’t necessarily the end of the world, but if you know it’s unjust, that blemish on an otherwise flawless reputation can really get under your skin. Replying aggressively to obnoxious and entitled customers won’t do you any favors, so sometimes to best way to make a point is with polite restraint, while clearly stating your case and correcting the falsehoods in the review.
This response to a one-star review, shared , is a perfect example of this. The restaurant and the customer are both unknown, save for the name ‘Monica,’ but if you run a business and encounter unfair reviews, this is a great example to learn from.

A Helpful Reminder Why Due Process Matters

In this age of social media justice mobs, the accused are often convicted in the court of (liberal) public opinion long before any substantial evidence emerges to warrant an investigation or trial. This is certainly true for Kavanaugh. His accuser, Christine Blasey Ford, cannot recall the date of the alleged assault and has no supporting witnesses, yet law professors are ready to ruin his entire life and career. Not because they genuinely believe he’s guilty, but because he’s a pro-life Trump nominee for the Supreme Court.

It goes without saying: to “sink Kavanaugh even if” Ford’s allegation is untrue is unethical, unconstitutional, and undemocratic. He has a right to due process, and before liberals sharpen their pitchforks any further they would do well to remember what happened to Brian Banks.

Instead of expelling jewish influence in his country after the fairly recent satanic mass slaughter of up to 80 million of his Russian brothers and sisters by jews after the "Bolshevik" revolution, Putin is calling for harder punishments for anti semitic expressions in Russia. "Transphobic" Swedish Professor May Lose Job After Noting Biological Differences Between Sexes

“If you answer such a question you are under severe time pressure, you have to be extremely brief — and I used wording which I think was completely innocuous, and that apparently the student didn't,” Hesslow said.
