Former Obama Speechwriters Tell Stephen Colbert To Cool It With The Blue Wave Talk

Former Obama speechwriters and hosts of “Pod Save America” told comedian Stephen Colbert to ease up on his talk of a blue wave and said Democrats could lose everything all over again.

“It’s going to be tight. It’s going to be a close race,” Jon Favreau said on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” Tuesday. “It’s been like that since, you know, right after [Donald] Trump became president.”

Colbert said he’s heard talk of a “blue wave,” while Faveau and his co-hosts said the chances of a Democratic takeover have always been “50-50.”

“This has always been 50-50. And the only way we win is if everybody gets off their couch and knocks on doors and makes phone calls and you get three friends to vote,” Tommy Vietor said.

Michael Moore Actually Believes This A-list Actor Could Defeat Trump In 2020

Moore’s most recent film about President Trump, Fahrenheit 11/9, was a complete dud

Now he just says things that are preposterous by nature.

Moore believes that “beloved Americans” such as actor Tom Hanks or even former First Lady Michelle Obama would defeat Trump in 2020.

In an interview on Good Morning Britain’s Piers Morgan show, Moore said, “Democrats need to run a beloved American, someone people want to vote for. I’ve said for years that Oprah should run. I’ve asked Tom Hanks twice to run.”

Tom Hanks would probably never do that.

The A-list actor is considered “America’s Dad” but he probably has no desire to actually run.

Outside In: The Trump administration’s plan to remake the Middle East

The only promise that is new about the promised peace plan is the way it will be forced on the Palestinians: no one has promised that the plan itself will be new. With Saudi Arabia and Egypt—the outside—brought onside with the promise of continued military aid despite their crimes against humanity and violations of international law and the Palestinians weakened by being silenced, economically crushed and stripped of any friends to help them, the United States and Israel are now free to attempt to impose a peace plan on the Palestinians.

Music industry hails passage of the Music Modernization Act

American politics may be polarized, but a new law signed by President Trump on Thursday suggests that liberals and conservatives agree on the need for a better system to compensate musicians and songwriters in the digital era.

The Music Modernization Act, co-sponsored by Sen. Orrin G. Hatch (R-Utah) and Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.), is a response to the modern world of music streaming and satellite radio — platforms that did not exist when laws governing royalty payments to music creators and license holders were drafted decades ago.

The comprehensive music licensing bill corrects a number of pre-digital-era anachronisms. It creates a new independent entity that will license songs to companies that play music online, and then pay songwriters, including those who released hits decades ago before federal music copyrights took effect.

American Music Awards Ratings Plummet to Record Low as Entertainers Push Politics

Ratings for Tuesday night’s ABC broadcast of the American Music Awards (AMA) plummeted to an all-time low, as viewers apparently feared they’d be subjected to unwanted celebrity political preaching.

The three-hour program lost 25% of its 18-43 year-old viewers (1.8 rating/6.5 million viewers) from 2017, Variety reported Wednesday. The overall broadcast audience (2.4 rating/9.2 million viewers) suffered an even steeper decline of 29%.

“This is the latest example of an awards show seeing serious declines year-over-year. Back in September, the Emmy Awards on NBC also put up an all-time low,” Variety notes.

the Old West that westerns got absolutely wrong

There is hardly a movie genre that captivated so many for so long the way ‘Western’ did; bringing back to life some of the lost traditions of the frontier along with its ruggedness and outlaws. Americans especially loved the old west, for its gunfights, cowboys, stagecoach robberies, and clashes with Indians.

The flurry of western movie production perpetuated the American romance with the Wild West and doing so went off course with fewer facts and more fictional conjuring. Regardless of the vision of the Wild West one may have, the old west was nothing like what it has been portrayed on a cinema screen for the better part of last century. Following are some of the facts about the life on the frontier that is in sheer contrast with what we envisioned all these years.

Jamie Lee Curtis wields firearms in new ‘Halloween’ movie despite advocating for gun control

Jamie Lee Curtis’ on-screen actions stand in contrast to her real-life persona as an advocate for gun control.

Jamie’s got a gun in the latest “Halloween” reboot.

In the 11th installment of the horror film series, Jamie Lee Curtis’s character, Laurie Strode, is seen wielding firearms in her quest to kill the film’s legendary villain, Michael Myers.

At one point, she shoots him as he’s standing in front of a window.

Whoops! We couldn’t access this Tweet.
But Curtis’s on-screen actions stand in contrast to her real-life persona as an advocate for gun control — one of several Hollywood actors who use firearms in their films while preaching against them away from the set.

Saturday Night Live star Pete Davidson — who made headlines last December when he revealed his “Badass” Hillary Clinton tattoo — appeared on the NBC show’s “Weekend Update” segment and launched a full-on assault on Kanye West.

“So speaking strictly for myself, what Kanye said after he went off the air last week was one of the worst, most awkward things I’ve ever seen here,” Davidson said of West’s impassioned speech during the end of last week’s show, in which the Grammy-winner railed against critics of President Donald Trump, the “90 percent” liberal media, and pro-welfare state Democrats.

“He started by saying people backstage tried to bully him into not wearing it,” Davidson said of West. “He wore it all week. Like, nobody told him not to wear it. I wish I bullied you. I wish I suggested that, you know, it might upset some people, like, your wife or every black person ever.”

Smiling Bill Cosby arrives alone for his sentencing as a psychologist testifies the disgraced legend is a sexually violent predator with uncontrollable urges to have sex with young, non-consenting women who would reoffend

Bill Cosby arrived in court on Monday to start his sentencing hearing in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.

Cosby, who was declared a sexually violent predator by the state's sex-offender board, appeared to be carefree and in high spirits despite the occasion, and at one point smiled and then pointed and waved at a crowd of protesters outside the court.

Kristen Dudley, a psychologist and member of the offender board, testified Monday in court and stated that Cosby had a disorder which makes him inclined to sleep with non-consenting women.

Michael Moore’s ‘Fahrenheit 11/9’ Tanks at Box Office

Michael Moore’s anti-Trump documentary Fahrenheit 11/9 tanked at the box office, according to Deadline.

Although Fahrenheit 11/9 opened this weekend on a massive number of screens, it is projected to earn a paltry $3 million.

After a decade of disappointments for the Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker, even the early projections for what was supposed to be Moore’s comeback film did not look promising — a mere $6 million, but the reality is even worse: half of that.

Outside of the fact he has not had a hit since Sicko grossed a respectable $24.5 million all the way back in 2007, Fahrenheit 11/9’s humiliating opening is especially embarrassing when you consider it opened in an astonishing 1,719 theaters.

The whole idea behind Moore’s anti-Trump doc was to recapture the glory days of his Fahrenheit 9/11, which opened in the summer of 2004 in just 868 theaters to an astonishing $24 million.

You know all those movies you bought from Apple? Um, well, think different: You didn't

Remember when you decided to buy, rather than rent, that movie online? We have some bad news for you – you didn't.

Biologist Anders Gonçalves da Silva was surprised this week to find three movies he had purchased through iTunes simply disappeared one day from his library. So he contacted Apple to find out what had happened.

And Apple told him it no longer had the license rights for those movies so they had been removed. To which he of course responded: Ah, but I didn't rent them, I actually bought them through your "buy" option.

At which point da Silva learnt a valuable lesson about the realities of digital purchases and modern licensing rules: While he had bought the movies, what he had actually paid for was the ability to download the movie to his hard drive.

The European Union is in the final stages of crafting legislation that will force big tech and internet companies to censor “extremist” content and cooperate with law enforcement, Reuters reports.

The bill is expected to be released by the end of the month and will absolutely require companies such as Google, Facebook, and Twitter to swiftly remove any content considered terroristic from their platforms.

In March, the European Commission told such companies that they had three months to show they were removing “extremist” content more rapidly or face legislation forcing them to do so.

EU recommendations were sent out at the time regarding the speedy removal of all content including terrorist content, incitement to hatred and violence, child sexual abuse material, counterfeit products, and copyright infringement.

Webmaster's Commentary:

What concerns me, in this draconian move, is the proclivity for going after sites (like this one) which are fact centric, even though those facts may not be to the EU's liking.

What’s Fact and What’s Fiction in Darkest Hour

Joe Wright’s Darkest Hour is a piece of historical fiction that undertakes a serious historical task: to present Winston Churchill and the British people’s choice to stand up to Hitler as just that … a choice. In hindsight, after eventual victory, the decision to fight against the Germans can appear a foregone conclusion. Since we all like to imagine that we personally would never fold to the Nazis, it can be hard to understand that reasonable people, most of whom had no love for Hitler, seriously considered a truce in spring 1940, during the days depicted in the film. To their eyes, fighting on after the approaching fall of France would only delay the inevitable at the cost of mass civilian slaughter. Better to come to terms now while they still had the leverage of an army and aircraft factories.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Claire and I watched this film last night, and it is an excellent film. Gary Oldman did a fantastic job. However, we did wonder if certain portions of the film were historically accurate, especially the subway train ride.

Kevin Spacey's Billionaire Boys Club rakes in a record-breakingly abysmal $126 at the box office on opening night

Kevin Spacey's new movie Billionaire Boys Club raked in a shockingly low $126 at the box office on its opening night.

The indie film marked the disgraced former House of Cards lead's return to the screen after being accused of sexual assault by more than a dozen men.

Despite the impressive cast that featured Ansel Elgort and Taron Egerton in starring roles and other leads Emma Roberts, Jeremy Irvine, Cary Elwes, Judd Nelson and Billie Lourd, the movie has tanked after a quiet opening in 10 cities on Friday.

Bringing in an average of $12.60 per location - less than two tickets given the average price of $9.27 - and just $126 total, the crime-drama is by far Spacey's lowest grossing film to date.

Doing It Wrong: Steve Martin And Martin Short Think It’s Best Not To Insult Half Their Audience With Trump Jokes

Following my Steve Martin-theme article about Australia (please see here) comes a piece about the actual Lonely Guy. In an interview with Indiewire published Wednesday, The Jerk and his co-star Martin Short explain why they don’t makes jokes about the President in their two-man live show.

You may have caught, by the way, the pair’s Netflix special, An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life. It’s great to see Steve back on the stage, and Short is no slouch himself. They ham it up at one another’s expense — Short tells his white-haired, pasty partner, “You look like a page in a coloring book that hasn’t been colored yet.” One of Steve’s jabs: “I think of you as a renaissance man, and not just because you carry smallpox.”

Personally, I think they should be billed as Steve Martin Short.

A Manhattan federal judge ruled Tuesday that a sex trafficking lawsuit filed against Harvey Weinstein can move forward after the disgraced movie mogul tried to get it thrown out.

British actress Kadian Noble has alleged that the movie producer assaulted her and, in her lawsuit filed in November, claimed that he violated federal sex trafficking laws when he promised her a film role if she went to his hotel room in Cannes, France, in 2014, according to Page Six.

“Plaintiff has plausibly alleged that Harvey Weinstein, knowingly and in interstate commerce, enticed and or recruited her knowing that means of force, fraud, or a combination of the two, would be employed to cause her to engage in a commercial sex act,” U.S. District Judge Robert W. Sweet said, according to Deadline.

Jimmy Buffett Endorses Open Borders Democrat in Florida Governor Race

Rocker Jimmy Buffett is leaving sleepy Margaritaville and jumping into politics, endorsing Democrat Gwen Graham in the Florida Governor’s race.
In his endorsement, Buffett says Graham has a “heart for people” as well as a “passion for the Sunshine State,” according to The Hill.
The “Cheeseburger in Paradise” singer also insisted Graham will “protect” the environment, spend more money on schools, and shore up Obamacare.

“It’s been too long since we have had a Governor for all the people. For that reason, I am supporting my friend, Democrat Gwen Graham, for governor and I encourage ya’ll to do the same,” the 71-year-old singer exclaimed.

Oh, Zeus will be played by a black actor in the series as well...

There's an agenda folks: deconstruct white mythic heroes to nothing more than Africans.

Searching "whitewashing in film" brings back 3.75 million hits (casting white actors in non-white roles). It's a universally derided and lambasted practice.

Casting black actors in white roles?

Worthy of praise and incessant admiration.

FLASHBACK - The Multiracial Remake of "A Christmas Story" (Complete with a Black Santa Claus) Bombs

The diverse A Christmas Story Live completely bombed, delivering terrible ratings, and absolutely bombing with viewers. In fact, it has lower audience score on RottenTomatoes.com than the universally derided A Christmas Story 2, a direct-to-dvd movie made in 2012.

Moral of the story?

Diverse remakes of beloved Christmas stories don't go over well in a country where large segments of the population now realize the America nostalgically depicted in A Christmas Story is far, far superior to the country we find ourselves strangers in today.

It should also be remembered the director of the original A Christmas Story, Bob Clark, was killed by an illegal alien in 2007.

"F*ck Hope": Michael Moore Slams Obama's Mantra As "Lazy Way Out"

Moore told the Huffington Post that "Hope is passive. Hope gives you permission to let someone else do the work. Hope leads people to believe that tax returns, or a pee tape, or the FBI or an adult film star will save the country. Hope, and the passivity that comes with it, is what helped get us here to begin with. It’s the lazy way out."

“We don’t need hope. We need action,” exclaimed Moore.

In case that was too subtle, Moore clarified:

Fuck hope. Seriously, fuck hope. Fuck despair, too. But fuck hope.

Moore tells the Post that Donald Trump is an "evil genius" who "has no intention of leaving the White House."

Capt. Picard is Back! Sir Patrick Stewart Announces Return to “Star Trek” Universe

The series Star Trek: The Next Generation ended in 1994, but Sir Patrick Stewart as the cerebral and decisive Captain Jean-Luc Picard maintained his hold over fans’ loyalty ever since, second only to the group that starred in the original show of the 1960s.

After the show went off the air, the British actor enjoyed a great deal of career success that had nothing to do with Star Trek, from continuing his stage work in major productions of The Tempest and Hamlet to playing Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men film series.

But now fans may feel they’ve been hit by phasers set to “stun.” Stewart said in a statement released in August 2018 that it is “an unexpected but delightful surprise to find myself excited and invigorated to be returning to Jean-Luc Picard and to explore new dimensions within him. Seeking out new life for him, when I thought that life was over.”

Rosie O’Donnell’s Plan to Stop President Trump – A Sing-Along

Rosie, you see, doesn’t believe Donald is a “legitimate President,” citing alleged interference by Russia in the 2016 presidential election.

“He should not be president,” she told MSNBC’s, Ari Melber. “I don’t believe he’s a legitimate president. I believe if it wasn’t for Russia he never would have won.”

How does she plan on combatting this ‘illegitimate’ President? Why … a sing-along, of course!

O’Donnell led a group of Broadway performers in a musical protest of the President on Monday night in front of the White House, a gathering that has been taking place for just over three weeks now.

The group sang “America the Beautiful” – seemingly unaware of the irony that it was America the beautiful that democratically voted President Trump into the White House – as well as a host of other show-tune favorites.

MoviePass backtracks on plan for 50% price hike just days after announcing it - but says subscribers can now only see THREE movies per month

Just days after announcing a plan to raise its subscription fee, MoviePass now says it will keep its monthly rate at $10.

The firm was hit with harsh backlash from subscribers after revealing the planned 50 percent price increase last week, which would bring the fee to $15.

While the price may stay the same, the perks will not. Moving forward, MoviePass will impose a cap of three movies per month, instead of one every day.

MoviePass has grown to 3 million subscribers, from about 20,000, since it slashed monthly rates nearly a year ago to $10, from as high as $50.

Because MoviePass typically pays theaters the full cost of tickets - $15 or more in big cities - a single movie can put the service in the red.

The Painted Monument to the Soviet Army in Bulgaria

The Monument to the Soviet Army is located in the King’s Garden in the heart of the Bulgarian capital of Sofia. Built in 1954, it was created as a symbol of gratitude for the Soviet Red Army for helping Bulgaria on their war efforts during the second World War. The monument depicts a soldier of the Soviet Army, surrounded by a male worker and a female peasant from Bulgaria. At the base of the monument are several bas-reliefs depicting a mishmash of scenes - soldiers in the battlefields and Bulgarian peasants at work. The entire memorial complex is surrounded by a park that has become a popular hangout for young people.

London’s Secret Nuclear Reactor

For more than 30 years, between 1962 and 1996, a nuclear reactor sat at the heart of London tantalizingly close to a busy thoroughfare and to people’s homes and public buildings. Its existence so close to the metropolis was kept a secret from the public, because to tell the truth would have been extremely controversial.

The reactor was located at the basement of King William Building at the old Royal Naval College in Greenwich. The Royal Naval College was established in 1873 and was housed in a 17th century building complex designed by the highly acclaimed English architect of the time, Sir Christopher Wren. The buildings originally housed the Greenwich Hospital—a retirement home for disabled sailors of the Royal Navy. The word “hospital” merely meant a place providing hospitality. After the hospital closed in 1869, these buildings became the Royal Naval College where navy officers were trained.

Meghan Markle and her father are planning to reunite in secret in the US later this month, friends of the Duchess of Sussex have claimed.

Prince Harry's wife will take a solo trip home to America to see her estranged father Thomas Markle, according to the Mirror.

The 74-year-old former lighting director is said to be 'delighted' about the potential visit from Meghan, and is 'keeping two dates free at the end of the month'.

The meeting would be the first time the former actress has seen her reclusive father in several months after he pulled out of her wedding in May, citing health concerns.

Republican congressman is still touting fake pro-Israel award from Sacha Baron Cohen

As part of his effort to trick conservative activists and lawmakers into embarrassing themselves on his Showtime series Who is America?, Sacha Baron Cohen presented a fake pro-Israel award to an array of political figures called “70 at 70.” On behalf of a non-existent Israeli outlet called “Yerushalayim Television,” Cohen’s team told its unsuspecting victims (and some more rightly skeptical marks) they were being honored for their “significant contributions to the State of Israel.” But weeks after the rouse was revealed, it appears that Rep. Scott Perry (R-PA) still doesn’t realize he was duped.

Shock and Awe Celebrates Reporters Who Got It Right

It’s now conventional for corporate media pundits and centrist politicians to acknowledge that their support for the US invasion of Iraq was misguided. Most excuse their pro-war record on the grounds that there was no available alternate narrative to the Bush administration’s claim that Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction. How could they have known any better?

But as FAIR has long noted (Extra!, 3–4/03), this “we were all wrong” narrative doesn’t hold up. There were, in fact, a few corporate journalists who got it right when everyone else was getting it wrong.

Shock and Awe, a new film directed by Rob Reiner—of This Is Spinal Tap (1984) and A Few Good Men (1992) fame—tells the story of two of these journalists. At the center of Reiner’s proper noun–heavy docudrama are Jonathan Landay and Warren Strobel, two reporters for Knight Ridder, one of the largest newspaper publishers at the time. (It’s since been absorbed by McClatchy.)

Webmaster's Commentary:

Understandably, the corporate media has trashed the film. But Claire and I really liked it and I recommend you hit that pay-per-view button this weekend and see it.
