‘THE ONLY DEMOCRACY IN THE MIDDLE EAST’??? … NOT QUITE

decision by Israel’s electoral committee to ban two Arab parties and a candidate from a third Arab-led slate from running in elections, while allowing a far-right-wing candidate despite recommendations from the attorney general to ban him, was sharply criticized Thursday by leaders of Israel’s Arab community.

The ruling was called unreasonable and racist, and it sparked fears among Israeli Arabs that the country’s 1.8 million Arab citizens could be further politically marginalized ahead of April 9 parliamentary elections.

Another Failed Coup in Venezuela?

***
Underestimating the People
We’ve seen this all before: On April 11 of 2002, the Venezuelan opposition—according to the most credible accounts—unleashed snipers on its own supporters and used the ensuing deaths to justify a coup against Hugo Chávez. But the opposition dramatically overplayed its hand and underestimated the Chavista grassroots, who it routinely smeared as the blind followers of a populist strongman.>>>

Israel trying to provoke US into attacking Iran: Academic

An American writer and retired professor says Israel and its lobby in Washington, DC are trying to provoke the United States into attacking Iran by fabricating the notion that the Islamic Republic represents a threat.

James Petras, a retired professor who has written dozens of books on international issues with particular focus on Latin America, the Middle East and imperialism, made the remarks in an interview with Press TV on Thursday.

In a Washington Post article on Tuesday, two US senators warned that the administration of President Donald Trump “is barreling toward war with Iran,” calling on Congress to act to prevent it.

Tom Udall (D-NM) and Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill.) said that Trump might wage a war on Iran based on a wrong justification like the one the administration of former President George W. Bush used to go to war with Iraq in 2003.

FLASHBACK - Lawsuit Warns $234 Billion In Aid To Israel Violates US Law Against Supporting Secret Nuclear States

A lawsuit warns that U.S. aid to Israel violates a law meant to prevent nuclear weapons proliferation, even as the United States prepares to increase the already massive Israeli aid program.

Filed Aug. 8 by Grant Smith, director of the Institute for Research: Middle East Policy, or IRMEP, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, the suit alleges that U.S. aid to Israel violates two amendments to the 1961 Foreign Assistance Act, known as the the Symington and Glenn Amendments, which collectively ban support for countries engaged in clandestine nuclear programs.

In the lawsuit, Smith alleges that violating these amendments means that Israel has received approximately $234 billion in illegal aid since the passage of the International Security Assistance and Arms Export Control Act of 1976.

The lawsuit reads:

IN FIRST, JUDGE BLOCKS KANSAS LAW AIMED AT BOYCOTTS OF ISRAEL

The American Civil Liberties Union won an early victory today in its federal lawsuit arguing that a Kansas law requiring a public school educator to certify that she won’t boycott Israel violates her First Amendment rights.

A federal judge issued a preliminary injunction blocking enforcement of the law while the case filed in October proceeds. It is the first ruling addressing a recent wave of laws nationwide aiming to punish people who boycott Israel.

The law, which took effect on July 1, requires that any person or company that contracts with the state submit a written certification that they are “not currently engaged in a boycott of Israel.” The ACLU is also currently fighting a case filed in December against a similar law in Arizona.

Bernie Sanders: Still Progressive Except for Palestine

A text message appeared on my phone a few days ago from the newly-minted Bernie Sanders campaign. The message reported the “HUGE NEWS” that Sanders “JUST” announced he is running, and asking me if I’m ‘in.’ I texted back, asking about his position on Palestine, and was told where I could donate to the Sanders campaign. For whatever reason, I wasted my time with a few more texts, and got responses such as “I understand, have a great day!” Eventually, the question was answered, and it was the same tired refrain we hear from any PEP politician. That response is included here in its entirety:

“In response to you (sic) first message, he supports diplomatic efforts to end the occupation and broker a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine which allows both peoples to coexist in peace, security and dignity. He also supports steps to put pressure on both sides in response to policies that undermine that goal.”

Trump Criticizes Democrats For Passing Resolution Condemning Hate

President Donald Trump has branded as "disgraceful" the resolution passed after Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar's comments suggesting House supporters of Israel have dual allegiances. (March 8) AP

President Donald Trump described the Democratic Party as an “anti-Israel party" and an "anti-Jewish party" on Friday and said a House vote condemning hate but not specifically denouncing the remarks of one of its members was “disgraceful.”

The president, speaking at the White House before departing for Alabama, was responding to a question about a vote in the House Thursday to condemn hate after freshman Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minnesota, made comments critical of Israel that detractors said played to anti-Semitic tropes

The Fake News Nazi - Corbyn, Williamson And The Anti-Semitism Scandal

One of us had a discussion with an elderly relative:

'He can't be allowed to become Prime Minister.'

'Why not?'

'It's so awful...'

'What is?'

'The way he hates the Jews.'

The last comment was spoken with real anguish, the result of continuous exposure to just two main news sources: the Daily Mail and the BBC.

What is astonishing is that, just four years ago, essentially no-one held this view of Jeremy Corbyn.

Corbyn first became an MP in 1983. He stood for the Labour leadership 32 years later, in May 2015. We searched the ProQuest database for UK newspaper articles containing:

'Jeremy Corbyn' and 'anti-semitism' before 1 May 2015 = 18 hits

'Jeremy Corbyn' and 'anti-semitism' after 1 May 2015 = 11,251 hits

None of the 18 hits accused Corbyn of anti-semitism. For his first 32 years as an MP, it just wasn't a theme associated with him.

Keep It Up, Ilhan Omar

Maybe Mogadishu will turn out to be the source of hope. This war-torn city was the birthplace of the most promising U.S. congresswoman today.

Ilhan Omar is not only one of the first two female Muslim members of the House of Representatives, she may herald a dramatic change in that body. “Hamas has entered the House,” Roseanne Barr was quick to cry out; “A black day for Israel,” tweeted Donald Trump. Neither Hamas nor a black day, but a glimmer of hope on Capitol Hill.

Maybe, for the first time in history, someone will dare tell the truth to the American people, absorbing scathing accusations of anti-Semitism, without bowing her head. The chances of this happening aren’t great; the savage engine of the Jewish lobby and of Israel’s “friends” is already doing everything it can to trample her.

Israel Is Not America’s Ally

Andrew Sullivan comments on the U.S.-Israel relationship and the role of “pro-Israel” lobbying groups in our politics in a new essay. There are several things that I think Sullivan gets wrong, but perhaps the most significant and pervasive error in the piece is his repeated description of the relationship an “alliance.” He notes that the U.S. gets nothing in return for the extensive military and diplomatic support that it provides, he acknowledges that the U.S. “suffers internationally” on account of its close relationship with Israel, and he marvels at how badly its government under Netanyahu has behaved towards the U.S. Nonetheless, he writes, “I would defend the alliance despite this, because of my core belief in a Jewish state.” The trouble with all this is that there is no alliance and Israel is not our ally. Its government does not behave as an ally does, it has never fought alongside U.S.

Israel elections obscuring ‘growing apartheid’ in Palestine, professor claims

In an article published this week in Haaretz entitled “Front Against Apartheid,” lecturer at the Department of Geography at the University of Beer Sheva, Professor Oren Yiftachel, argued that the obscuring of the Palestinian issue in the election arena is an attempt to escape the main issue facing Israel – the “apartheid” between Jews and Palestinians.

Yiftachel pointed out that, by neglecting and silencing the issue, the problem is exacerbated rather than solved. The response of the democratic parties must therefore be the formation of a broad front against the intention of “the apartheid bloc” – namely the right-wing parties – to form a colonial regime extending across all historic Palestine.

South Africa to downgrade Israel diplomatic mission

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has said that his government is planning to downgrade its diplomatic mission to Israel.

This, he said, comes in response to recommendations from the National Conference of the National African Party which was held more than a year ago, Safa news agency reported yesterday.

Speaking before the parliament, Ramaphosa said that his government stands with the Palestinian people in their fight to achieve self-determination, but also recognises Israel’s “sovereign right”. He also noted that the ministry of international cooperation and foreign affairs is working to implement the decision.

“This [decision is being taken] due to the violation of the rights of the Palestinian people,” Ramaphosa said, adding: “We are putting pressure on Israel [but,] at the same time, we are ready to broker the process to achieve peace in the Middle East.”

Debunking the myth of Labour’s ‘anti-Semitism crisis’

Pro-Israel groups aided by the mainstream media have led the assault on the Labour Party over its handling of allegations of anti-Semitism. Their goal, it seems, is no less than the removal of Jeremy Corbyn as leader with the unfounded claim that he is partly responsible for the surge in anti-Semitism amongst Labour members, which we are told has now reached epidemic proportions.

The allegations have prompted a powerful response from academics and activists, including Jews. Peter Beinart, for example, penned a long essay shattering the myth that anti-Zionism is anti-Semitism. While the article by the Jewish American author was originally published in the Forward magazine, even the Guardian – believed by many to be fuelling the crisis — uploaded it onto its website’s long read section. So far, it has had 21,000 shares; I recommend the piece because of its nuanced dissection of the arguments around the anti-Semitism allegations.

In the West Bank, the Israeli forces killed 2 Palestinian civilians and wounded 6 others, including 3 children.

In the Gaza Strip, Israeli forces wounded 92 civilians, including 26 children, 2 women, a journalist, and 3 paramedics, while participating in the Return March. The injury of three of them was reported serious.

The Israeli air force fired, on Saturday at dawn, several missiles into a few areas, near Gaza city, and in the southern part of the coastal region, causing property damage.

Media sources in Gaza said that Israeli F-16 fighter jets fired at least two missiles into a site near the al-Waha area, northwest of Gaza City, causing excessive damage.

They added that the army fired at least one missile into another site, in the Zeitoun neighborhood, southeast of Gaza city, causing property damage.

The army also fired at least two missiles into an agricultural land, in Juhr ad-Deek area, southeast of Gaza, causing damage to the land and a few surrounding homes.

The Palestinian Health Ministry in Gaza has confirmed that Israeli soldiers killed, Friday, one Palestinian, and injured 48 others, including four medics and two journalists, in the Great Return March processions, in the eastern parts of the besieged Gaza Strip.

The Health Ministry said the soldiers killed Tamer Khaled Mustafa Arafat, 23, after shooting him with live fire, east of Rafah city, in the southern part of the Gaza Strip.

Tamer was hit with a live round in the head, and was rushed to the Gaza European Hospital, but succumbed to his serious wounds.

Jeremy Corbyn and the truth about Tom Bower's book

Those of us who report on politics are at liberty to express, within limits, whatever opinions we like. These limits include an obligation to observe standards. We should strive to be accurate. We can make strong arguments but ought not to distort the truth or suppress relevant information to make our point.

Writer Tom Bower fails catastrophically to meet these standards. It is not only that Dangerous Hero: Corbyn's Ruthless Plot For Power, his new book on Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, contains numerous falsehoods. It systematically omits relevant facts in order to portray Corbyn as a ruthless Marxist and anti-semite hell-bent on destroying Western liberal values.

A Peek into the Horrific Findings of the UN Report on Israel’s Massacre of Gaza Protesters

The United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council have released a powerful report, on the Gaza ‘Great Return March’ demonstrations, stating that they have grounds to believe Israel committed International War Crimes against demonstrators during “large-scale civilian protests”.

The 22-page document has been condemned by the Israeli government, as there is talk of Israel being brought to the International Court of Justice and tried for war crimes and violations of International Law against demonstrations that “were civilian in nature”.

The commission conducted 325 interviews and meetings with victims, witnesses, government officials and members of civil society, from all sides, and gathered more than 8,000 documents, including affidavits, medical reports, open source reports, social media content, written submissions and expert legal opinions, video and drone footage, and photographs.”

Kahane in, Arabs out: Israeli election panel disqualifies Palestinian party calling for equality, approves racist Jewish Power leader

Just hours after chairman of the far right Otzma Yehudit, or “Jewish Power” party, Michael Ben Ari was approved by Israel’s Central Election Committee to run for the Knesset on Wednesday, the same committee disqualified the joint Arab slate Balad-United Arab List from running.

The decisions were made despite recommendations from Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit who said Ben Ari should be disqualified, while the Balad-UAL list should be allowed to run. It is expected to be appealed to the Supreme Court.

In addition to the disqualification of Balad-UAL, the committee ruled to prevent Ofer Cassif, a Jewish representative in Hadash, from running. The claim against Cassif was, that he “denied the existence of Israel as a Jewish state”, and in the case of UAL-Balad it also included “supporting terror” (Haaretz, Hebrew).

Ilhan Omar and the anatomy of a trope

Representative Ilhan Omar’s straight-talk about the corruption of the US political process by a foreign government was a service to her country, as well as to the cause of justice and peace in the Middle East. Omar impaled a great taboo with the first name of a remarkable, multi-talented eighteenth century American hero whose portrait appears on $100 bills. Outraged agents of that foreign government, aided by US politicians who know the truth of her words better than anyone, kicked in the center beam holding up the sky — but to their horror, the sky did not quite fall. True, she was branded a peddler of age-old tropes; yet it was difficult not to notice that the emperor was, indeed, naked.

Israeli soldiers shot, on Thursday evening, three young Palestinian men during protests against the siege, east of Khan Younis, in the southern part of the Gaza Strip.

Israel breaks into Al-Araqeeb, demolishes homes for 141th time

Israeli army vehicles and bulldozers demolished houses in the village of Al-Araqeeb, in the south and displaced their residents for the 141st time, despite the stormy and cold weather.

According to some of the residents of Al-Araqeeb, the police stormed the village this afternoon using reinforcement forces to protect the bulldozers and vehicles that destroyed tents and tin houses, and displaced adults and children leaving them homeless despite the harsh weather.

The residents stressed their willingness to stay in their village and rebuild the tents and houses, refusing to accept displacement from their village.

Israel forces Palestinian to demolish his and his daughter’s homes

A Palestinian father was forced to demolish his own home in occupied East Jerusalem, as well as that of his daughter, as Israeli authorities maintain their discriminatory housing policies in the city.

Mustafa Subah, an automobile mechanic, told his story to Haaretz reporters “on the ruins of his home”. A few weeks previously, a 15-year legal battle that cost him around 400,000 shekels ($110,220) came to an end when “he was compelled to demolish his and his daughter’s homes with his own hands”.

His daughter Zinab, along with her husband and three children, have now moved into “cramped conditions in the home of her mother-in-law”. Mustafa, meanwhile, along with his wife and three children who remain at home, are “squeezed into the two rooms of the original structure, waiting in dread to hear whether they will have to raze that as well”.

What next after the UN investigation into the bloodshed at the Gaza protests?

Over the course of a year, the Israeli government and its senior army officers have turned the Gaza Strip into a community of funerals, walking wounded and amputated limbs. Israel did not need primitive saws to destroy and sever limbs; its trained snipers deployed around the Gaza Strip were able to do that. These soldiers honed their dubious skills on thousands of peaceful Palestinian protesters, killing and wounding them throughout the first year of the Great March of Return protests, which began at the end of last March. Their victims include children, medics, journalists and people with disabilities.

Delaying publication of the settlement blacklist exposes the UN’s false narratives on human rights

The UN is openly flaunting its priorities and, sadly, human rights are far from a major concern for the international organisation. Since its creation post-World War Two, and having established itself as the platform which determines what constitutes a human rights violation and which countries can be considered as perpetrators, several trends have emerged within the UN which reduces the seriousness of people being deprived of their legitimate rights.

This has been achieved by creating ample space for reports on human rights violations to be disseminated, while refusing to insist upon accountability and justice. Ironically, the increasing awareness regarding human rights violations is actually creating widespread impunity, as the UN promotes itself as a platform for reporting about violations while intentionally failing to take action.

God Promised Antisemitism to the Zionists

In order to say what some might consider the un sayable I first need to deconstruct some mythical terms so let me just wade into some taboo territory as though I don’t even see the no-entry signs.

What is anti-Semitism?

“Antisemitism” is a word and a political construct. It has been loaded with meaning and importance like no other word in the English language. This is no exaggeration, it is not meant as hyperbole, if you want evidence of this you need look no further than the UK National Curriculum. I had a look at the core curriculum for secondary school History, and have quoted a section of it below.

– challenges for Britain, Europe and the wider world 1901 to the present day
In addition to studying the Holocaust, this could include:
Examples (non-statutory)
women’s suffrage
the First World War and the Peace Settlement
the inter-war years: the Great Depression and the rise of dictators
the Second World War and the wartime leadership of Winston Churchill

Jewish Labour Movement was refounded to fight Corbyn

The Jewish Labour Movement was revived in 2015 to battle Jeremy Corbyn, The Electronic Intifada can reveal.

A right-wing organization with intimate ties to the Israeli embassy, the Jewish Labour Movement claims to have been affiliated to Labour for a century.

But a transcript of an undercover recording, obtained by The Electronic Intifada, casts doubt on this narrative.

It indicates that the dormant Jewish Labour Movement was revived by political allies of Israel as a weapon against Corbyn, the left and the wider Palestine solidarity movement.

Jewish Labour Movement chair Jeremy Newmark told a members only function on 13 September 2016 that “a bunch of us sat in a coffee shop in Golders Green” around September 2015 to “talk about re-forming the JLM to do something with it,” the transcript of unused footage shot by Al Jazeera shows.

New York Times lets Israel do its “fact checking”

The New York Times has told me it is perfectly content to accept the word of the Israeli government over the facts.

I had advised the newspaper of record that columnist Bret Stephens misrepresented the facts in his implicit rejoinder to Michelle Alexander’s incisive opinion piece calling to break the silence on Palestine.

Stephens wrote: “Nearly 1,300 Israeli civilians have been killed in Palestinian terrorist attacks in this century: That’s the proportional equivalent of about 16 September 11s in the United States.”

This is wrong.

The Growing Anti-Semitism Scam

In his novel 1984 George Orwell invented the expression “newspeak” to describe the ambiguous or deliberately misleading use of language to make political propaganda and narrow the “thought options” of those who are on the receiving end. In the context of today’s political discourse, or what passes for the same, it would be interesting to know what George would think of the saturation use of “anti-Semitism” as something like a tactical discussion stopper, employed to end all dispute while also condemning those accused of the crime as somehow outside the pale, monsters who are consigned forever to derision and obscurity.

The Israelis and, to be sure, many diaspora Jews know exactly how the expression has been weaponized. Former Israeli Minister Shulamit Aloni explained how it is done “Anti-Semitic”…”its a trick, we always use it.”

Babies killed after Israeli army prevents fire-brigades from entering Hebron

Two Palestinian infants were killed in a fire after the Israeli military prevented fire brigades from reaching them on time in the occupied West Bank city of Hebron.

The two children, a toddler believed to be 18 months old and his younger sister burned to death after a fire that broke out in their homes.

The Mayor of Hebron said the Israeli military is responsible for the death of the infants.

Hebron’s fire chief said a call was received at 10:35 on Thursday night of a fire breaking out in a house in the old town of the occupied city.

Ayman Nasser Eddin said two fire trucks were immediately dispatched to the scene but were kept from passing through two different army checkpoints.

After the the fire trucks were finally allowed through the checkpoints 20 minutes later the 18-month old boy was already dead and his younger sister was unable to be saved.

Since dishonoring the P5+1 nuclear deal, the Trump Administration has made clear their goal is to bring Iranian oil exports to zero through sanctions. That’s wholly impractical, with many nations, including P5+1 deal signatories, saying they intend to keep buying from Iran despite US sanctions.

But Israel does have a navy and a burning desire to pick fights with Iran. In comments Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel’s Navy could soon be ordered to target Iranian oil tankers to prevent them selling oil abroad.

Netanyahu is trying to prevent Iran selling oil to nations like China without American permission as “smuggling,” and potential military attacks on oil tankers in international waters as enforcement of US sanctions. It’s not clear anyone else in the world, the US included, would generally consider that the case.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Such targeting would be an outright act of war.

Is Netanyahu hitting the panic button, due to corruption charges being placed against him?!? Folks, if true, this is really bad, because Netanyahu's strategy will be to antagonize Iran, then expect the cost of the war - in blood and money - to be paid by American troops.

Rahm Emanuel Slams Ilhan Omar: She’s Associating with ‘Calamities’ of the Holocaust

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel (D) slammed Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) in an opinion-editorial for The Atlantic Thursday, writing that by repeatedly trafficking in antisemitic tropes, she is associating herself with “calamities from the Spanish Inquisition to the Russian pogroms to the Holocaust.”

Omar is under fire for suggesting last week that pro-Israel groups pressure lawmakers to pledge “allegiance” to the Jewish state. Emanuel’s criticism of Omar comes as House Democrat leadership struggle to agree on the contents of a resolution condemning antisemitism. The Chicago mayor, who has previously faced similar accusations of dual loyalty, offers up stern rebuke of Omar in contrast to 2020 Democrat presidential candidates, such as Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Kama Harris (D-CA), who claim condemning the freshman congresswoman would make her a “target” and stifle public policy debates.

Gaza Needs ‘More Than Statements’ from UN to Stop Israeli Violence - Historian

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights reproached Tel Aviv’s response to a UN report last week that found Israel had breached the human rights of Gazans in its response to protests there. However, a historian and activist told Sputnik Wednesday that ending Palestinian suffering requires action, not tepid statements.

Sputnik reported last week that the UN Commission of Inquiry's February 28 report found that, by using live ammunition to suppress the Great March of Return protests on the border between Gaza and Israel, Tel Aviv gave the Human Rights Council "reasonable grounds to believe that… Israeli soldiers committed violations of international human rights and humanitarian law."

Tel Aviv blasted the commission's findings, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying, "The council is setting new records for hypocrisy and mendacity out of an obsessive hatred of Israel, the only democracy in the Middle East."

Israeli forces shoot down Gaza protester as warplanes launch new airstrikes

Israeli forces have fired at Palestinian protesters during a night-time protest in the Gaza Strip, killing a teenage boy, on the same night when the regime’s warplanes launched fresh airstrikes on the besieged enclave.

The 15-year-old boy, identified as Saif al-Deen Abu Zeid, was shot dead by the Israeli forces during a protest rally held in eastern Gaza on Wednesday night, medical sources in the enclave confirmed.

Health Ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra told AFP that the boy died “due to the wounds he sustained a few hours ago.”

Several other Palestinian youngsters were also injured by live bullets.

The shooting came as Israeli warplanes also launched fresh air raids on the southern Gaza Strip town of Khan Yunis.

Israeli warplanes have in recent weeks increased their airstrikes on various parts of the besieged Strip, mostly targeting posts belonging to Hamas resistance forces and their military wing, Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades.

Poland considers exhumations at pogrom site and Jews object

The Polish government is reconsidering whether to exhume human remains at a World War II-era site where Jews were burned alive by Polish neighbors, though the country’s chief rabbi says the work would violate Judaism’s prohibition on disinterment under most circumstances.

Authorities will weigh “various circumstances” in deciding if exhumations should go forward in the town of Jedwabne, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki told private broadcaster Polsat News.

During the German Nazi occupation of Poland, Poles killed at least 340 Jews on July 10, 1941. Most of the victims were locked inside a barn that was set on fire.

Some Poles want the massacre site excavated to uncover possible evidence that Germans ordered Polish villagers to do the killings. The work was started in 2001 and stopped by the justice minister after several days due to Jewish objections.

Tensions flare as Dems struggle to calm furor over Omar

House Democratic leaders are struggling to contain the controversy over Rep. Ilhan Omar's comments about Israel, with the caucus fighting behind closed doors over whether — and how — to respond.

Tensions ran high at a caucus meeting Wednesday as some Democrats privately vented that Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her leadership team had failed to adequately respond to the escalating political crisis, with too little outreach to their own rank and file.

Freshman Rep. Jahana Hayes of Connecticut stood up and confronted Pelosi directly, arguing that she shouldn’t have to learn about the official Democratic Caucus response from MSNBC. Hayes said she now has to vote on a resolution that she’s barely read, without a private briefing from leadership, according to five sources.

Trump Calls Out House Dems for ‘Inconceivable’ Failure to Condemn Anti-Semitism

President Donald Trump on Wednesday rebuked House Democrats for not taking “a stronger stand against” anti-Semitism as they continue to debate how to deal with the latest controversy caused by Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.).

“It is shameful that House Democrats won’t take a stronger stand against anti-Semitism in their conference,” Trump tweeted.

“Anti-Semitism has fueled atrocities throughout history and it’s inconceivable they will not act to condemn it!”

Why Do Some People Keep Repeating the Same Mistakes?

The universal lessons learned from the Holocaust are based on common sense reasoning.

A. Racial hatred is wrong– If X = a social, racial, religious, ethnic or sexual orientation group then hating X for being X is categorically wrong.

B. Supremacy, exceptionalism and chosenism provide a manual for a colossal disaster.

C. Suppressing dissent is very dangerous and often leads towards tyrannical conditions.

While most Western political institutions and States have acknowledged and integrated these post-WWII imperatives into their core principles, political attitudes and value systems, the Jewish State and most Jewish institutions around the world (both Zionist and ‘anti’) have ignored these imperatives.

Join and support our call to action - take to the streets on Saturday 11 May to demand freedom, justice and equality for the Palestinian people

Emboldened by the election of Trump and the emergence of far right allies across the world, Israel is entrenching its system of oppression in ways that create urgent threats to the realisation of the collective rights of the Palestinian people. Israel is expanding settlements at the fastest rate since Oslo, with Khan Al Ahmar and 45 other Palestinian communities in the West Bank facing forcible transfer. With the passing of its Nation State Bill in July 2018, Israel has embedded into its constitution the denial of equality under the law to Palestinian citizens of Israel who were already subject to more than 60 laws that directly discriminate against them.

Israel cuts water supply to 2,600 Palestinians in Jordan Valley

Israeli forces and the Israeli Civil Administration cut the water supply to 2,600 of Palestinians living in communities in Bardala village in the Jordan Valley, northern occupied West Bank, yesterday.

Mutaz Bisharat, an official who monitors settlement activity in Tubas/Jordan Valley, told Ma’an that Israeli forces cut off water supply for 60 per cent of residents of the Bardala village; amounting to 2,600 people.

Israeli forces also cut off water supplies for 1,800-2,000 dunams (445-494 acres) of Palestinian agricultural lands that must be continuously irrigated.

Bisharat added that Israel claims that water sources in the area are illegal, adding that this cannot be true because the water comes from wells in the village and inside Palestinian lands.

Netanyahu declares Al-Aqsa TV channel terrorist organisation

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu signed a decree yesterday declaring Palestinian Al-Aqsa TV a terrorist organisation, claiming it is used by Hamas to recruit terror groups, Israeli media reported.

“This decision comes at the recommendation of the Shin Bet and the Defense Ministry’s National Bureau for Counter Terror Financing, after the Shin Bet revealed terror group Hamas’ use of the satellite channel ‘Al-Aqsa’ to recruit operatives,” a statement issued by his office said.

In February, Shin Bet claimed that the channel’s broadcasters use quotes from the Quran or subtle language as gestures to recruit Hamas operatives in the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem.

Israeli warplanes have targeted and destroyed Al-Aqsa TV and Radio several times since 2000, when they were firstly launched after years of being banned by the Palestinian Authority.

Congress criticises Ihlan Omar’s words, but remains silent about Israel’s violence

The obsession with US Congresswoman Ihlan Omar’s criticism of Israeli influence over American politics really is unique. And what makes this debate genuinely immoral is that it focuses on Omar’s words but ignores the killing and oppression of Palestinian civilians by Israel.

The Minnesota Congresswoman has been pilloried over the past few weeks for criticising members of Congress who take money from pro-Israel Political Action Committees (PACs) in exchange for political support for Israeli policies. Omar has also highlighted the ugly tendency for many pro-Israel activists and politicians to have an apparently greater loyalty to Israel, a foreign country, than they do to the United States.

The Haaretz war on Jeremy Corbyn: scratch a Liberal Zionist and you find a chauvinist

For many people, Haaretz occupies much the same position as the Rand Daily Mail did in South Africa before it was driven out of business in 1985. It is the lone voice of liberalism in the world’s most racist far-right state.

Except that there is one important difference. Whereas the Rand Daily Mail opposed Apartheid, Haaretz is a supporter of Zionism. It’s editorial line is that Zionism and Israel can be humanised; that you can have a non-racist version of Zionism; that a Jewish state can indeed be a democratic state. It is the classic oxymoron.

In Israel, the political terms “left” and “right” take on a different meaning to that which is normally understood; they define one’s attitude to the Palestinian question. In normal, non-ethnically based states they define one’s position in respect of class and economic issues. The Israeli Labour Party (ILP) fails to meet the criteria of a left-wing party on both counts.

By force or forgery: How settlers claim Palestinian homes

The traces of a black eye are still visible on Abdel Qader Abu Srour’s face as he takes his medication with his morning coffee.

The father of two is tired. After four days in custody, he has just been released from an Israeli prison. “They kept me in solitary confinement for the first two days in a freezing cell with no blankets, nothing hot to drink, and no medical care,” he tells Middle East Eye.

Abu Srour, 27, was arrested on 7 February after being badly beaten by Israeli soldiers outside his family home in the southern occupied West Bank district of Hebron. They were escorting a group of Israeli settlers who claimed Abu Srour’s home was, in fact, their own.

“One of the settlers, the leader of the group, said that our house belonged to them and that we had to leave,” Abu Srour, who said more than ten soldiers and three heavily armed soldiers had arrived at his home.

Israel’s ‘Rule of the Rabbis’ Who Preach Genocide Fuels Holy War

In which country did a senior, state-salaried cleric urge his followers last month to become “warriors,” emulating a group of young men who had murdered a woman of another faith?

The cleric did so with impunity. In fact, he was only echoing other highly placed colleagues who have endorsed a book – again without penalty – urging their disciples to murder babies belonging to other religions.

Where can the head of the clergy call black people “monkeys” and urge the expulsion of other religious communities?

Where does a clerical elite wield so much power that they alone decide who can marry or get divorced – and are backed by a law that can jail someone who tries to wed without their approval? They can even shut down the national railway system without notice.

Where are these holy men so feared that women are scrubbed from billboards, college campuses introduce gender segregation to appease them, and women find themselves literally pushed to the back of the bus?

The House Democrats’ “Rebuke” of Rep. Ilhan Omar Is a Fraud for Many Reasons, Including Its Wild Distortion of Her Comments

GOP CONGRESSMAN STEVE KING has served in the U.S. House of Representatives for sixteen years, yet Democrats – who controlled the House for four of those years and now control it again – never formally rebuked or condemned him until last month (they did so at the same time that Republicans removed him from his Committee assignments due to a long history of white supremacist remarks).

By extremely stark contrast, Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar – the first black Muslim woman ever elected to the Congress – has served in the House for a little more than two months, and House Democratic leaders have already formally condemned her once and are preparing to so again, this time even more harshly and officially, on Wednesday.

American support for Israel falls to ten-year low, poll finds

US public support for Israel is at its lowest point in a decade, according to a recent poll.

Gallup – which surveys Americans each year on their sympathies in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict – this year found a substantial decline in support across party lines, with a surprising 13% drop among Republicans.

Overall, 59% of Americans say they side with Israel in its conflict with the Palestinians, down from 64% the prior year. But the number of Americans who sympathize more with the Palestinian cause has remain unchanged, at 21%.

“The slight decline in US sympathies toward Israel in the past year can be explained by drops among both major party groups,” reads a Gallup description of their poll results. “The percentage of Republicans saying they sympathize more with Israel in the conflict fell from an all-time high of 87% in 2018 to 76% today.”

Israeli Navy ready to block Iranian oil exports in transit – Netanyahu

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel is prepared to throw the power of its naval force – and urges the world to join in – to block the Iranian oil shipments circumventing unilaterally imposed US sanctions against Tehran.

“Iran is trying to bypass the sanctions on it through the covert smuggling of petroleum via the sea. As these attempts expand, the navy will have a more important role in efforts to block these Iranian actions,” Netanyahu said at a navy cadets’ graduation ceremony in Haifa on Wednesday.

Failing to explain how exactly Israel’s relatively small naval force would impose the suggested blockade against Iranian oil tankers, Netanyahu only emphasized that Israeli sailors are well-trained and adept at carrying out sea missions against adversaries.

Revealed: A day after Corbyn said ISIS bride should be let back into UK... how Labour's John McDonnell once called for anyone who fought for Israel to be stripped of their British citizenship

John McDonnell argued Britons who fought for Israel against Palestine should face the threat of losing their citizenship in a letter that emerged today - 24 hours after Jeremy Corbyn said jihadi bride Shamima Begum should keep her passport.

The shadow chancellor wrote to then Home Secretary Theresa May in 2014 saying she should censure British citizens who served in the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) and mete out the same punishment given to those who joined ISIS.

Yesterday his party leader said Shamima Begum and her newborn baby should be allowed to return from Syria and given the 'support that she needs' by the authorities.

Yet Mr McDonnell argued the Government's policy to strip violent jihadis of their passports should be widened to those who went to fight for the Israeli Defence Force against the Palestinians in Gaza - with some critics calling it 'hypocrisy'.

Israel's navy could act against Iranian oil smuggling - Netanyahu

Israel's navy could take action against Iranian oil smuggling, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Wednesday, urging world powers to foil any effort by Tehran to evade U.S. sanctions.

The Israeli leader told naval officers that Iran was still resorting to clandestine measures to ship fuel that it first used prior to a 2015 nuclear deal easing Western sanctions on its oil sector.

U.S. President Donald Trump last year quit the nuclear deal and reimposed some sanctions, aiming to cut Iran's oil exports to zero.

"Iran is trying to circumvent the sanctions through covert oil smuggling over maritime routes, and to the extent that these attempts widen, the navy will have a more important role in blocking these Iranian actions," Netanyahu said.

"I call on the entire international community to stop Iran's attempts to circumvent the sanctions by sea, and of course, by any (other) means."

In Condemning Ilhan Omar, Democrats Have Proved Her Right

At a time of heightened anti-Muslim discrimination and hatred, the Democratic establishment has taken unprecedented steps to single out a Muslim representative for her criticisms of AIPAC and the U.S.’s relationship with Israel. After first publicly rebuking Rep. Ilhan Omar, the Democratic establishment, led by House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi, began drafting a resolution condemning anti-Semitism, amounting to an indirect censure.

The move has spectacularly backfired, threatening deep fissures in the Democratic Party as accusations of anti-Semitism tear apart the Labour Party in the U.K. The rush to heed calls for a resolution has only further exposed the Democrats’ close ties to pro-Israel groups and, more alarmingly, has given a tacit green light to the racism and Islamophobia that fuels the Trump administration and its supporters.

‘Racially profiled’ British student interrogated by Israeli embassy at UK campus

Israel’s Ambassador to the UK, Mark Regev, rose to notoriety with his ruthless and unapologetic defence of Israeli war-crimes in Gaza. UK Sells $445m Of Arms To Israel, Including Sniper Rifles

Britain has approved the sale of arms to Israel worth $445m since the 2014 Gaza war, including components for drones, combat aircraft and helicopters along with spare parts for sniper rifles, according to figures seen by Middle East Eye.

The government data will raise fresh concerns that British-made weapons are being used by the Israeli military in the Occupied Territories, amid fears that components in sniper rifles used to kill scores of Palestinian civilians in recent weeks could have been made in the UK.

Arms export licences to Israel soared to £216m, or $300m at current exchange rates, last year from £20m in the wake of the Gaza war, new Department for International Trade figures show.

They include a major £183m licence covering "technology for military radars", but ministers have also approved the sale for export of grenades, bombs, missiles, armoured vehicles, assault rifles, small arms ammunition, sniper rifles and components for sniper rifles.
