The Loser Dems – Mike Whitney

It’s time to pull up our big boy pants and face the facts: The Democratic party is NOT a suitable vehicle for the progressive agenda.

The Dems are a party without a leader and without a message. They keep carping about Russia and Trump because they have no convictions, no beliefs, and no fire in the belly. It’s a party of empty suits and phony flannel-mouth politicos. The only thing they’re good at is losing, which is an art they appear to have perfected.

The problem is, that the rest of us are sick of the party’s sad-sack song-and-dance, sick of the excuses, sick of the buck passing, and sick of losing. We want candidates who actually stand for something, who actually believe in something, and who’ll actually fight for something.

No Taxpayers’ Nickel is Spared in Washington’s Military Adventures Worldwide

At the beginning of 2017, the chief of US Special Operations Command (SOCOM) General Raymond Thomas while speaking in front of one of the Senate committees announced that:
We operate and fight in every corner of the world. Rather than a mere ‘break-glass-in-case-of-war’ force, we are now proactively engaged across the ‘battle space’ of the Geographic Combatant Commands… providing key integrating and enabling capabilities to support their campaigns and operations.
According the director of the Arms and Security Project at the Center for International Policy, William Hartung most Americans would be amazed to learn that US Special Operations Forces have been deployed to three quarters of the nations on the planet. Furthermore, according to this researcher there is little or no transparency as to what they are doing in these countries and whether their efforts are promoting security or provoking further tension and conflict.

Trump says America open for business. Marijuana industry asks “What about us?"

WASHINGTON

President Donald Trump told world leaders that America is open for business. But one budding U.S. industry — marijuana growers and sellers — sees irony in this boast, which comes as they feel forced by the administration to invest millions in cannabis businesses across the border.

Privateer, which has the backing of the Silicon Valley mogul and Trump supporter Peter Thiel, announced Thursday that it had raised more than $100 million in its third round of fundraising. Kennedy said those dollars, which brings their total funding to $200 million, shows that U.S. investors continue to see growth opportunities despite the federal government’s threats to clamp down. But Kennedy said more than 75 percent of the funding would be invested in Canada and overseas where governments are more supportive of the industry.

“That money would have gone to jobs and would have gone to pay taxes in the U.S. It would have gone to manufacturing facilities in the U.S.,” Kennedy said.

Air Force One Refrigerator Replacements To Cost Taxpayers $24mn

Experts say Boeing's nearly $24 million contract to install two new refrigerators on Air Force One is not price gouging, but due to the specific requirements of the presidential plane. The jet is designed to store 3,000 meals

Air Force One has a total of five chillers that can store about 3,000 meals to feed up to 100 passengers and crew for weeks without resupplying, according to Defense One. The chillers on the jumbo jet date back to 1990, when the current model of the presidential planes were first deployed.

Boeing was awarded a $23,657,671 contract to design, test, and install two VC-25A G12/G13 chillers for the customized 747 jumbo jet in December.

Pot banning supervisors served recall notices

These anti-freedom mattoids are goin down, down, down!

Two county supervisors who played a role in enacting a pot ban in Calaveras County were served with notices of intent to recall them Tuesday during a board meeting in San Andreas.

Two separate groups, led by Jeremy Maddux of District 4 and Joan Wilson of District 1 respectively, served Supervisors Dennis Mills, District 4, and Gary Tofanelli, District 1, recall notices after both campaigns obtained more than the required 20 signatures since last week in support of their efforts.

Maddux said during public comment that Mills was a “divisive” politician, who brought a personal agenda into the office in banning cannabis. He condemned the supervisor for alleged Ralph M. Brown Act violations, “disparaging” remarks to county staff and disregard for members of the public who challenged his positions.

How a Cannabis Ban Turned One California County Into 'Ground Zero for Chaos'

After millions were invested in legal, environmentally safe Cannabis farms and over $12 million in taxes were collected from them, a new County Supervisor shut them all down. The count of Calaveras lost 20% of their operating funds. The only other industry they have is ranching and kale growing.

On Jan. 10, supervisors in this historic county—where Gold Rush mining camps flourished in 1850—voted to kill off the Green Rush that exploded here in 2016. By a 3–2 tally, the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors declared all commercial cannabis farms illegal. The county planning department estimated that as many as 1,600 commercial cannabis growers were operating in the region in mid-2017. Many of them were licensed by the county. Now, the move to ban cannabis businesses means every one of those growers must cease operations by May 1. Millions of dollars in tax money will vanish from the economically beleaguered county of 45,000 residents.

Coup d'état political intervention

Coup d’état, also called Coup, the sudden, violent overthrow of an existing government by a small group. The chief prerequisite for a coup is control of all or part of the armed forces, the police, and other military elements.

Can you say Deep State?

A coup rarely alters a nation’s fundamental social and economic policies, nor does it significantly redistribute power among competing political groups.

California To Business Owners: Half Of Your Savings From Trump's Tax Bill Belongs To Us

California lawmakers are targeting the expected windfall that companies in the state would see under the federal tax overhaul with a bill that would require businesses to turn over half to the state.

A proposed Assembly Constitutional Amendment by Assemblymen Kevin McCarty, D-Sacramento, and Phil Ting, D-San Francisco, would create a tax surcharge on California companies making more than $1 million so that half of their federal tax cut would instead go to programs that benefit low-income and middle-class families.

Charles Koch donated $500K to Ryan days after GOP tax plan passed

GOP mega-donor Charles Koch and his wife donated about $500,000 to Speaker Paul Ryan’s (R-Wis.) joint fundraising committee, just days after the GOP tax plan was passed.

Charles Koch made the donation 13 days after the plan was passed, which lowers the corporate tax rate and cuts estate taxes, the International Business Times reported.

He and his wife also gave $237,000 each to the National Republican Congressional Committee on the same day, according to the report.
Charles Koch and his brother David Koch were both major advocates for the tax plan, pouring millions of dollars into efforts to get the legislation passed.

After Scoring Huge Tax Cuts, Charles Koch Floods Ryan With Cash

In the months leading up to the passage of the Republican Party’s long-awaited tax bill last year, the powerful political operation run by the billionaire Koch brothers was one of the strongest forces pressuring lawmakers to pass massive tax cuts for wealthy individuals and corporations.

“Republicans never hid the fact that this tax bill was about pleasing their big donors,” Adam Smith, communications director at campaign finance reform nonprofit Every Voice, told International Business Times. “And it looks like House Speaker [Paul] Ryan is quickly being rewarded for passing this legislation that overwhelmingly benefits the Kochs and billionaires like them.”

Wealthy exodus to escape new tax rules worries California Democrats

The Republican-backed federal tax bill flipped the tables on a never-ending question for California politicians: Will high taxes lead the state’s wealthiest residents to flee the Golden State for the comparable tax havens of Florida, Nevada and Texas?

Republicans reliably raise that alarm when Democrats advocate for tax increases, like the 2012 and 2016 ballot initiatives that levied a new income tax on very high-earning residents.

But now, with the federal tax bill cutting off deductions that benefited well-off Californians, the state’s Democrats suddenly are singing the GOP song about a potential millionaire exodus.

“People with higher incomes pay a lot more money, and some of them may be tempted to leave,” Gov. Jerry Brown said when he unveiled his 2018-19 budget proposal last week. “This was an assault by the Republicans in Congress against California.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

Governor Brown, that last statement was pure bull-biscuits, sir, and you know it!!

In this country, every individual has the right to "vote with their feet", as a lot of well-to-do Californians have already done. When a state's tax burden becomes too high (as California's already is), and there is really nothing to show for the money spent, like a consistently dysfunctional educational system; health care which cannot deliver; a massive gap between wages and corporate profits; and the voluntary saddling of the state's infrastructure with illegal immigrants whose presence has bled the State of California dry, through entitlements, etc., you have.... a non-functional, failed US State.

And Governor Brown, this is precisely where California stands right now. In fact, if you have chosen NOT to read it, I highly commend the following article in the LA Times: Why is liberal California the poverty capital of America?

The hard and true reality is this; for quite some time, legislation made on the State level, has brought California to its knees, in terms of stopping it from being the kind of growth engine one wants to see, and should see, here.

And California, its citizens and businesses, are paying the price for many amazingly lousy legislative decisions made by people who do not have a clue how business works, and how they profit, because they have always had various jobs with the State before they run for public office.

So to those tax/infrastructure/fed up better-to-do Californians who are really ready to vote with their feet, let me encourage you to do so; the State of California has brought this upon itself, and if it cannot fix it, you have every right to leave for states with better, more sensible tax structures than does California.

Engineering Faster Planes in WWII: Kelly Johnson, the P-38 and the P-80

Clarence "Kelly" Johnson (BSE AeroE ’32, MSE ’33) was a bold an innovative aircraft designer. One of his earlier planes, the Lockheed P-38 Lightning, echoes that description well. It's unique twin-boom and central nacelle (for the cockpit) design gave it great stability and maneuverability at higher speeds than other planes offered... Until it entered a steep dive. Then things went south, fast.

Head Skunk

The name of the super-secret project was Suntan. It was to be the ultimate reconnaissance airplane, flying so high and so fast—it was to cruise above 100,000 feet at Mach 2—that detection would be unlikely and interception impossible. But it also would have been a giant winged thermos bottle, with a fuel tank full of liquid hydrogen at –400 degrees Fahrenheit and its outer skin baking at 350 degrees or more. A proposed hydrogen liquefaction plant dedicated to producing fuel for several of the airplanes would have sucked up 10 percent of the natural gas supply of Los Angeles in two years. Flying the highly unstable and explosive liquid to the airplanes’ bases would have required a fleet of heavy transports. An accident with one of the transports would have made the Hindenburg disaster look like a campfire.

DHS restarts Obama-era DACA amnesty after judge’s ruling

Amazing! Trump isn't allowed to rescind an executive order.I have never seen such a weak President.

DACA is back up and running, Homeland Security announced this weekend, saying President Trump’s attempt to phase out the Obama-era deportation amnesty is on hold while they fight a court case that ordered them to begin accepting applications again.

Only those among the 800,000 or so previously approved can submit applications for renewal, under the judger’s order. And those covered by DACA will no longer be granted advance parole, which had become a shortcut pathway to citizenship in the Obama administration.

But U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services said it will otherwise restore DACA as it was on Sept. 5, before Mr. Trump decided on a six-month phaseout, saying the program was illegal.

Nevada Bundy Prosecution Collapses: The Federal Government Spent a Quarter-Billion Dollars but Couldn’t Convict the Bundys of a Single Crime

In 2013 the federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM) obtained federal court orders authorizing the agency to “seize and remove to impound” hundreds of Cliven Bundy’s cattle on the public ranges around Bunkerville, Nevada. The agency interpreted these court orders broadly, and descended on the area in April 2014 with some 200 body-armor-wearing agents, semiautomatic weapons, sniper teams, undercover informants, and surveillance cameras aimed at the Bundy residence.

States Threaten "Economic Civil War" On Washington

The new year has only just begun, but already Democratic politicians in the country’s largest high-tax states are threatening lawsuits and publicly touting proposed workarounds to help compensate tax payers for the elimination of the state and local tax (SALT) deductions which were dramatically rolled back, along with deductions for mortgage interest, as part of the White House’s tax reform plan.

During his state of the state address earlier this week, New York Mayor Andrew Cuomo threatened to sue the federal government over the tax bill, claiming that the plan is unconstitutional and overly burdensome to New Yorkers.

“YOU ALL JUST GOT A LOT RICHER,” TRUMP TELLS FRIENDS AT MAR-A-LAGO AFTER SIGNING TAX OVERHAUL

When Donald Trump and the Republican party unveiled its precious tax legislation, outside analysts immediately noted that the bill seemed designed to favor a slim subset of Americans. The Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, for example, found that almost a third of the plan’s benefits would go to the wealthiest 1 percent of Americans in 2018. But the president has repeatedly belied that fact as he’s plugged the policy, even claiming on a call to Senate Democrats that his accountant told him he would “get killed” as a result of the legislation. “The deal is so bad for rich people, I had to throw in the estate tax just to give them something,” he added.

Trump Signs Bill Adding Funds for Missile Defense, Destroyer Fixes

>$4 billion for missile defense programs at the Pentagon to combat the ballistic missile threat posed by North Korea, including $200 million to build a new missile field in Alaska;
>$2.1 billion for the Veteran Affairs Department's Veterans Choice Program; and
>$674 million for the Navy to repair the Arleigh Burke-class destroyers USS John S. McCain and USS Fitzgerald, both of which were damaged in separate collisions with commercial vessels in the Pacific this summer, resulting in the combined deaths of 17 sailors.

"We are ordering $4 billion worth of missile defense equipment and missiles," Trump said during a bill signing at the White House. "Very important. Top of the line. Best in the world. We make the best military product in the world, and nobody is even close."

The president added, "And so we're ordering $4 billion worth of missile defense, and that will be done by signing right here and also by notifying the Speaker of the House and President of the Senate, designating the missile defense as emergency defense fund. So it's $4 billion for that and $700 million for various other military forms of equipment. And I'm very honored to be doing that. Our military has been doing a fantastic job in so many ways, with ISIS. And everything they're touching lately has been working out. So we're signing that."
