Two FERRIES will be converted into warships to bolster the Royal Navy, Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson announces as he warns Russian and China the UK will use its 'hard power'

Two ferries will be bought and converted into warships to bolster the Royal Navy, Gavin Williamson announced today.

The Defence Secretary insisted the new 'Littoral Strike Ship concept' boats would create a rapid response capability for Royal Marines that can be deployed globally.

The ships would be stripped to their hulls and adapted so they can deploy fast boats, landing craft or special forces. The idea is they could be used in cases such as humanitarian disaster or hostage rescues.

The Defence Secretary was branded an 'embarrassment' and accused of offering a 'second hand Navy' this afternoon.
