New Zealand Labour Party Installs New Deputy Leader

The Labour Party caucus unanimously elected Jacinda Ardern on March 7 as the party’s new deputy leader, following the resignation of long-standing MP and deputy Annette King.

The 37-year-old entered parliament as a young “list” MP—i.e., without an electorate—in 2008. Ardern’s promotion to deputy leader follows her victory in a February 25 by-election in the west Auckland electorate of Mount Albert. With a general election due in September, the ruling National Party, along with the right-wing NZ First and ACT parties, declared it a “safe” Labour seat and did not contest the election.

$20 Trillion Debt Deserves As Much Attention As Dow Hitting 20,000

The media and Wall Street got all excited when the Dow Jones industrial average hit 20,000 earlier this year — and justifiably so.

But why not give the same sort of attention to the US federal debt, which will slip past $20 trillion later this year or in early 2018.

The symmetry of these two numbers is just too precious to ignore.

Massive Breach Threatens To Wipe Out 300 Million iPhones On April 7th Unless Apple Pays Ransom

Hackers claiming to have compromised at least 300 million Apple account ID’s and passwords say they will initiate a complete wipe of iPhones and iClouds if the Cupertino, California based technology company doesn’t pay them a ransom.

The group, which goes by the name Turkish Crime Family, says Apple has until April 7th to come up with either $75,000 in BitCoin or $100,000 in iTunes gift cards.

According to Motherboard, the group posted a Youtube video proving they have compromised the credentials of millions of iCloud accounts, which could then be used to wipe an iPhone remotely and potentially locked users out of critical phone features.

Once The Eurozone Collapses, Will The EU Return to a “Normal Trading Union”

Peter Navarro, the head of President Trump’s National Trade Council, said in a recent interview in the Financial Times that the euro is “like an implicit Deutsche Mark” that gives Germany an advantage when it comes to exports over other members. Whilst he fails to understand that Germany has always had an export led economy, there is a lot of truth in what he says when it comes to other European economies trapped inside a frigid and inflexible currency system.

Due to flat economic performance that has required trillions in CPR in a vain attempt to resurrect the Euro’s dying moments the political elite continued with an ideologically driven austerity programme and did little about mass unemployment during a time of huge immigration. Many commentator’s in recent years have said this is the eurozone’s ‘lost decade’ but, in reality, they have now turned even more fatalistic and come to the conclusion that it is really the Eurozone’s last decade.

State Refuses To Pay Lottery Winners Their $288M Winnings By Giving Them A Horrible Reason

Israel: America’s Mad Dog in Syria

Israel has played an increasingly provocative role in the destructive conflict unfolding within and along Syria’s borders since 2011. To many observers, it appears Israeli policy borders between opportunistic and unilateral aggression. In reality, Israel’s role in the Syrian conflict fits a much larger and long-term pattern with Anglo-American plans not only for Syria but for the entire region.

A more recent row between Israel and Syria was the reported incursion of Israeli warplanes into Syrian airspace, including attacks near the eastern Syrian city of Palmyra. Palmyra hosts an ongoing battle between Syrian forces and the self-proclaimed “Islamic State” (ISIS) terrorist organization. Israeli airstrikes against Syrian forces – then – would have facilitated ISIS operations in the region.

The Multibillion-Dollar U.S. Spy Agency You Haven’t Heard of

On a heavily protected military base some 15 miles south of Washington, D.C., sits the massive headquarters of a spy agency few know exists. Even Barack Obama, five months into his presidency, seemed not to have recognized its name. While shaking hands at a Five Guys hamburger restaurant in Washington in May 2009, he asked a customer seated at a table about his job. “What do you [do]?” the president inquired. “I work at NGA, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency,” the man answered. Obama appeared dumbfounded. “So, explain to me exactly what this National Geospatial…” he said, unable to finish the name. Eight years after that videotape aired, the NGA remains by far the most shadowy member of the Big Five spy agencies, which include the CIA and the National Security Agency.

Newly Obtained Documents Prove: Key Claim of Snowden’s Accusers Is a Fraud

But these media conspiracists have gotten away with this fable of the Missing Eleven Days in Hong Kong and similar tales because their core assertions were deliberately designed to be insusceptible to being affirmatively disproven. Newly obtained documents conclusively prove that the central tale invented by these Snowden-accusing commentators is a wholesale fabrication. These documents negate the edifice on which this entire fiction has been based from the start.

Israel preps for war on Gaza and Lebanon

Israel is drawing up contingency plans to evacuate up to a quarter-million civilians from border communities to protect them from attacks from Hamas, Hezbollah or other groups. The mass evacuations would be the biggest in Israel’s history, part of a bigger plan where the army works with municipalities to keep civilians safe. All sides have been preparing in case a new round of warfare breaks out, although Hezbollah currently is tied down in Syria’s civil war fighting in support of President Bashar Assad.

Each side has warned that a new conflict would be worse than previous ones. Hezbollah fired more than 4,000 rockets on Israeli communities in the 2006 War, while Israel bombarded civilian and Hezbollah targets in Lebanon. The month of fighting killed an estimated 1,300 Lebanese, 44 Israeli civilians and 121 Israeli soldiers.

Saudi Arabia’s Brutal and Futile War in Yemen Turns Two

The Saudi-led—and U.S.-backed—war in Yemen turns two on March 26. The war, initially dubbed “Operation Decisive Storm,” and now more ironically called “Operation Restoring Hope,” has failed to achieve any of its aims. Yemen’s Houthi rebels, who Saudi Arabia erroneously claims are Iranian proxies, have retained control of northwest Yemen and Yemen’s unpopular government remains in exile. In addition, the war has succeeded in impoverishing millions, empowering al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), and now threatens the broader region with increased instability.

Yemen, already the Middle East’s poorest country, now faces a catastrophic famine. Sixty percent of Yemenis are at risk of starvation. More than 17 million people out of the population of 24 million are in need of immediate aid. Two years of often indiscriminate bombing by Saudi Arabia and its primary partner, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), have laid waste to Yemen’s infrastructure.

Warnings of a ‘Powder Keg’ in Libya as ISIS Regroups

After B-2 bombers struck an Islamic State training camp in Libya in January, killing more than 80 militants, American officials privately gloated. On the heels of losing its coastal stronghold in Surt the month before, the Islamic State seemed to be reeling.

But Western and African counterterrorism officials now say that while the twin blows dealt a setback to the terrorist group in Libya — once feared as the Islamic State’s most lethal branch outside Iraq and Syria — its leaders are already regrouping, exploiting the chaos and political vacuum gripping the country.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Oh look! We must invade Libya ... again!

Xi Jinping urges two-state Palestinian solution in talks with Israeli PM

Beijing on Tuesday called for peaceful coexistence between Israel and an independent Palestinian state “as soon as possible”.

In a meeting with visiting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Xi Jinping said a stable Middle East was in the interests of both China and Israel.

“The conflict between Israel and Palestine has had a long lasting impact on the Middle East,” he was quoted by CCTV as saying. “China appreciates that the Israeli side will continue to tackle the Israeli-Palestinian issue on the basis of the “two-state solution”.

Webmaster's Commentary:

President Xi Jinping, a word, please: I have a very strong sense that you said this "for public consumption", but would suggest that this will only happen when pigs discover how to fly.

At some level you need to understand that Israel does not want peace in the Middle East; they want territory, and by any means necessary, as far as the Israeli government is concerned, and regional destabilization is the only way they believe they can achieve it. Please remember what the term "Eretz Israel" means to Israeli hard liners; a country stretching from the Nile to the Euphrates River.

Here's a map of how this larger Israel would look:

Map: Eretz Israel

And notice the bits of other countries which come under Israel's control, if this came about; large hunks if Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Lebanon, and Saudi Arabia would have to be ceded, before this happened.

The Israeli government bombed the USS Liberty, and attempted to blame Egypt for it, nearly causing a Third World war; they cheer-led the US's catastrophic war against Iraq; they are cheer leading for a US-backed war against Iran; they are attacking Syria, uninvited and unprovoked; they are committing serial genocide against the Palestinians, and doing brisk, illegal annexations of Palestinian territory in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

After evaluating all this, can you rationally, and reasonably believe that the Israeli government wants to create a two-state solution with the Palestinians?

I am afraid, Sir, the short answer is, "absolutely not!"

Israeli Ban Targeting Boycott Supporters Raises Alarm Abroad

A law barring foreigners from entering Israel if they back boycotts against the country is causing alarm among liberal American Jews and others who perceive an attempt to suppress critical political opinion.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing government has long campaigned against the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, describing it as anti-Semitic and an attempt to erase Israel’s legitimacy.

The movement, launched in 2005 as a non-violent campaign to press Israel to heed international law and end its occupation of territory Palestinians seek for a state, has gathered momentum in recent years even if its economic impact remains negligible.

On March 6, Israel’s parliament passed legislation saying any individuals or representatives of groups supporting BDS-type boycotts - excluding Israeli citizens and permanent residents - would be barred from the country.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, a word, please; the government of Israel has already lost its legitimacy through the very apartheid treatment of Palestinians; through indefinite detention of Palestinian prisoners who may well have committed no crime, and the torturing of Palestinian children in order to obtain "confessions" leading to more arrests of Palestinians.

And you cannot, logically, claim that this movement is anti-Semitic, as it is not at all against the Jewish religion, but against practices of the Israeli government; any rational person can see that.

But then again, unfortunately, rationality and the Israeli government have not had an ongoing relationship for some time.

And since the language of morality is not one in which Tel Aviv appears to be fluent, the language of economics, as in the potential damage BDS has to ultimately, and peacefully, damage the Israeli economy, appears to be the only language the government in Tel Aviv understands.

So, sir, that is the language which will continue to be used against the Israeli government's practice of apartheid, until that practice is discontinued.

BREITBART AND INFOWARS UNDER INVESTIGATION FOR TIES TO RUSSIA

Federal investigators are examining whether far-right news sites played any role last year in a Russian cyber operation that dramatically widened the reach of news stories — some fictional — that favored Donald Trump’s presidential bid, according to a new report.

The Hill reported the probe is focused on discovering whether Russian operatives used conservative outlets to help spread stories favoring now-President Trump, McClatchy said Monday after confirming with two people familiar with the inquiry that the FBI’s Counterintelligence Division is driving the investigation.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This so looks like McCarythyistic desperation on the cusp of madness, I hardly know where to begin.

And yes, having read, and occasionally linked to both blogs, I would characterise them as "conservative"; but "ultra-right?!?

In November's election, I really felt as though I had very little choice whatsoever than Trump, in light of the fact that the Democrats shoved Clinton down the voters' throats to the point of massive, collective regurgitation, and "arranged" for Bernie Sanders to lose its party's nomination.

A simple command allows the CIA to commandeer 318 models of Cisco switches

Cisco Systems said that more than 300 models of switches it sells contain a critical vulnerability that allows the CIA to use a simple command to remotely execute malicious code that takes full control of the devices. There currently is no fix.

WikiLeaks publishes docs from what it says is trove of CIA hacking tools
Cisco researchers said they discovered the vulnerability as they analyzed a cache of documents that are believed to have been stolen from the CIA and published by WikiLeaks two weeks ago. The flaw, found in at least 318 switches, allows remote attackers to execute code that runs with elevated privileges, Cisco warned in an advisory published Friday. The bug resides in the Cisco Cluster Management Protocol (CMP), which uses the telnet protocol to deliver signals and commands on internal networks. It stems from a failure to restrict telnet options to local communications and the incorrect processing of malformed CMP-only telnet options.

Webmaster's Commentary:

DONALD TRUMP IS FILLING TOP PENTAGON AND HOMELAND SECURITY POSITIONS WITH DEFENSE CONTRACTORS

President Donald Trump has weaponized the revolving door by appointing defense contractors and their lobbyists to key government positions as he seeks to rapidly expand the military budget and homeland security programs.

Two Department of Homeland Security appointments Trump announced Tuesday morning are perfect examples.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I am profoundly disappointed by these developments; we need people in these positions who insure, through an audit process, that all the money spent by the US government intelligently, and that the "bang" for its weapons development dollars is a profoundly positive one.

Throwing more money at a failed system will not fix the problems of a failed system, the corporate governance of which believes it is perfectly acceptable to deliver flawed, so late in delivery as to be obsolete, and vastly over-budget products.

EU Official: We’ll Force Members To Accept Refugees

The commissioner for the European Union’s “Common Immigration and Asylum Policy” said the bloc can force member states to accept refugees, the Associated Press reports.

The commissioner, Dimitris Avramopoulos, said that the bloc has the “tools, the means and the power,” to force member states to comply. Avramopoulos’s comments came during a visit to Poland, which has opposed EU efforts to resettle refugees. Poland argues that many of the refugees in Europe came to improve their economic prospects, rather than fleeing a dangerous war-zone.

Avramopoulos’s comments are the latest in a series of threats by EU officials to countries that refuse to accept refugees or challenge the EU’s quotas. “The Commission might start infraction procedures” against resistant nations, European Commission Vice-President Frans Timmermans declared in early February. He expressed his hope that “peer pressure” would force countries to comply.

Webmaster's Commentary:

So, the EU believes it can FORCE member nations to absorb thousands of violent young men into their countries?!?

These two have, by these statements, looking at all the horrific violence which has accompanied this unvetted immigration has created, spoken the death knell of the EU.

And I have a grand idea; why don't EU member nations FORCE their leadership in Brussels to accept these immigrants in their own homes, particularly if they have teenage girls in their homes?!?

OUR HOPELESSLY DYSFUNCTIONAL DEMOCRACY

Democracy in America has become a hollow shell. The conventional markers of democracy--elections and elected representatives--exist, but they are mere facades; the mechanisms of setting the course of the nation are corrupt, and the power lies outside the public's reach.

History has shown that democratic elections don't guarantee an uncorrupt, functional government. Rather, democracy has become the public-relations stamp of approval for corrupt governance that runs roughshod over individual liberty while centralizing the power to enforce consent, silence critics and maintain the status quo.

Consider Smith's Neofeudalism Principle #1: If the citizenry cannot replace a dysfunctional government and/or limit the power of the financial Aristocracy at the ballot box, the nation is a democracy in name only.

The War on Water Is a Very Real Crisis

One of the hidden costs of industrial agriculture is its intensive water usage. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), about 80 percent of U.S. consumptive water (and more than 90 percent in many Western states) is used for agricultural purposes.1

Only about 3 percent of the water on Earth is fresh water, which is dependent on rain for replenishment. Fresh water stored in aquifers, meanwhile, is being increasingly depleted, at a rate that cannot be naturally restored.2

In some areas, pollution has left water largely undrinkable while industry (often the same ones responsible for the pollution) is draining underground aquifers at alarming rates. Irrigation is necessary to grow crops (including alfalfa hay used primarily for cattle feed) in arid regions of the U.S., but experts say it's unsustainable.

Webmaster's Commentary:

What really concerns me is the toxicity of water levels in many places in the US.

We here in Hawaii are very lucky, because the water here is very pure and clear of contaminants, but kind of already lousy in many areas of the continental US.

Labor nominee Acosta cut deal with billionaire guilty in sex abuse case

Now, Trump is on the witness list in a Florida court battle over how federal prosecutors handled allegations that Epstein, 64, sexually abused more than 40 minor girls, most of them between the ages of 13 and 17. The lawsuit questions why Trump’s nominee for labor secretary, former Miami U.S. attorney Alexander Acosta, whose Senate confirmation hearing began Wednesday morning, cut a non-prosecution deal with Epstein a decade ago rather than pursuing a federal indictment that Acosta’s staff had advocated.

BATTLE FOR MOSUL ENTERS ITS FINAL STAGE

Iraqi security forces (ISF), backed up by the US-led coalition’s airpower, artillery units, and special forces troops, have been struggling to retake the Old City from ISIS terrorists in western Mosul. The highly urbanized Old City is the main ISIS stronghold in this part of Mosul and ISIS units resist ISF in a fierce attempt to keep this key area under its control.

On March 20th, ISF units launched another push in the direction of Mosul’s Grand Nuri al-Kabir Mosque where the ISIS’ leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, declared the “Islamic Caliphate” in 2014. If ISF troops regain the Grand Nuri al-Kabir Mosque in western Mosul, they will achieve a big PR victory over the terrorists group. However, the situation in the area is very complicated.

UK schoolboy corrects Nasa data error

A-level student Miles Soloman found that radiation sensors on the International Space Station (ISS) were recording false data.

The correction was said to be "appreciated" by Nasa, which invited him to help analyse the problem.

"What we got given was a lot of spreadsheets, which is a lot more interesting than it sounds," Miles told BBC Radio 4's World at One programme.

The research was part of the TimPix project from the Institute for Research in Schools (IRIS), which gives students across the UK the chance to work on data from the space station, looking for anomalies and patterns that might lead to further discoveries.

DOJ Found Malware in Trump Tower Servers ‘Mimicking’ Contacts to Russian Entities

Washington Free Beacon senior writer Adam Kredo on Tuesday discussed the Department of Justice finding malware on servers for Trump Tower mimicking supposed Russian ties.

Kredo was talking with One America News Network's Liz Wheeler about the FBI investigating the Trump campaign for collusion with Russian ties.

Kredo first said that the investigation should go on, before discussing a rarely mentioned point.

"It wasn't very well reported, the Department of Justice revealed just last week that in fact some of these ties that they had witnessed between Trump Tower servers and Russian entities in fact, were stooged," Kredo said.

Kredo went on to explain that malware may have been installed on these servers to mimick contacts with Russian entities in an effort to portray that the Trump campaign had the Russian contacts.

TAFTA/TTIP seems to be on ice, but Trump's choice for US trade representative has just said he is open to resuming negotiations, so it's not clear what might happen there (or with TISA). FEDERAL JURY RULES IN FAVOR OF TORTURED TO DEATH ARMY VETERAN. FAMILY AWARDED $10 MILLION (GRAPHIC VIDEO)

A federal jury has ruled in favor of the estate of an Army veteran who died on the floor of a jail in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Elliott Williams broke his neck and was lying naked and paralyzed for 51 hours. The county is ordered to pay the family $10 million.

On Monday, the jury returned after deliberating for around 10 hours and found that Williams’ civil rights were violated by both the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office and former Sheriff Stanley Glanz, who was ordered to pay the family an additional $250,000 in punitive damages from his own pocket.

Williams, an Army veteran, was arrested by Owasso police after suffering a mental breakdown. His only alleged crime was a misdemeanor for obstruction, but Williams died in custody before the formal charges could be filed.

During the first day of the trial, jurors saw the last 51 hours of William’s life captured by the jail’s surveillance cameras.

Tom Fitton on Russia Hacking: FBI Chasing Fantasy ‘Democrat Unicorn Theory of the Election’

On Tuesday’s Breitbart News Daily, Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton saw FBI Director James Comey’s testimony before the House Intelligence Committee as a “typical congressional hearing, where you get a little bit of information, some headline-grabbing, but in terms of the substance, it’s hard to get anything material.”

Cyber Firm at Center of Russian Hacking Charges Misread Data

An influential British think tank and Ukraine’s military are disputing a report that the U.S. cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike has used to buttress its claims of Russian hacking in the presidential election.

The CrowdStrike report, released in December, asserted that Russians hacked into a Ukrainian artillery app, resulting in heavy losses of howitzers in Ukraine’s war with Russian-backed separatists.

But the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) told VOA that CrowdStrike erroneously used IISS data as proof of the intrusion. IISS disavowed any connection to the CrowdStrike report. Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense also has claimed combat losses and hacking never happened.

The challenges to CrowdStrike’s credibility are significant because the firm was the first to link last year’s hacks of Democratic Party computers to Russian actors, and because CrowdStrike co-founder Dimiti Alperovitch has trumpeted its Ukraine report as more evidence of Russian election tampering.

The boycott follows a series of reports in The Times demonstrating that Google was running advertisements promoting big brands against jihadi and racist videos on YouTube, the world's second most popular website after Google's search page.

Fix crap Internet of Things security, booms Internet daddy Cerf

Vint Cerf, one of the fathers of the internet, has weighed in on Internet of Things security, warning that a Mirai botnet-style incident could happen again unless vendors start taking responsibility for their goods.

“The biggest worry I have is that people building [IoT] devices will grab a piece of open source software or operating system and just jam it into the device and send it out into the wild without giving adequate thought and effort to securing the system and providing convenient user access to those devices,” Cerf told the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) organisation at its 50th Turing Award celebrations.

World's worst botnet fiends switch from ransomware to stock scam spam

Cybercriminals behind the Necurs botnet have reactivated the zombie network and returned to their original business of using compromised machines as conduits for spam distribution.

In January, Cisco Talos reported that the Necurs botnet had gone offline, taking the typical volume of Locky ransomware-tainted spam emails with it.

Security researchers have once again detected an uptick of spam email from the Necurs botnet over recent days. Rather than distributing malware in the form of malicious attachments, it has shifted back to sending high volumes of penny stock pump-and-dump messages.

Plusnet slapped with £880k fine for billing ex customers

Broadband provider Plusnet has been slapped with a £880,000 fine from Ofcom for continuing to bill former customers.

More than 1,000 ex-customers were overcharged £500,000 by BT-owned Plusnet, after it continued to bill for landline and broadband services that had been cancelled.

The penalty is the result of an investigation opened last May and was caused by an error in Plusnet’s billing system meaning cancelled lines were still recognised as "live".
