ISRAEL DEFIES UN Archives April 9, 2008The Foreign Ministry said Tuesday that it will not allow the United Nations official appointed to investigate Israeli-Palestinian human rights to enter the country, after he stood by comments comparing Israelis to Nazis.
That title should have read "Israel to deny UN official entry for telling the truth."
And if Israel continues with this attitude, it should be suspended from its membership in the UN, and all US funding and military support of Israel should end - immediately. - M. R. April 1, 2008The Chief of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon condemns Israel's recurrent violations of UN Security Council resolution 1701 in South Lebanon.
March 14, 2008On 18 February 2008, the British Government was forced to release a draft dossier on Iraq's so-called "weapons of mass destruction" under the Freedom of Information Act. But it succeeded in persuading a Freedom of Information Tribunal to allow a handwritten reference to Israel in the margin of the document to be suppressed.
... "On page 3 of the document, I refer to the marginal references in the first paragraph to Israel. The reference to Israel is linked (by a hyphen) to a sentence which reads: 'No other country has flouted the United Nations' authority so brazenly in pursuit of weapons of mass destruction'. I interpret this note to indicate that the person who wrote it believes that Israel has flouted the United Nations authority in a manner similar to that of the Iraqi regime of Saddam Hussein." A nuclear-free mirage: The Middle East cannot be freed from weapons of mass destruction unless the US turns the spotlight on Israel
In defiance of the security council resolution 487 of June 1981, Israel has not placed its nuclear facilities, whether civilian or military, under IAEA safeguards.
Indeed, while it is an open secret that Israel's nuclear facility at Dimona started producing atom bombs in 1968, and that it has built up an arsenal of some 200 nuclear bombs, it has not officially acknowledged the existence of such activity. Moreover, Israel has ongoing biological and chemical weapons programmes. Middle Eastern nations have had a very clear object lesson about what could happen to a country in that region which didn't have a nuclear deterrent when Iraq was attacked and occupied.
It is no wonder that other countries in the region think that their only recourse is to have a nuclear deterrent. And here, Israel is definitely the six thousand pound elephant in the living room. - M. R. January 19, 2008Israel has a right to respond to security threats but should not collectively punish the Gaza population for rocket attacks from the Palestinian territory, the U.N. humanitarian affairs chief said on Friday.
UN representatives can speak until they're blue in the face, but it will not stop Israel from continuing this behavior.
Just when Israeli leadership thinks that world attention is focused elsewhere, there will be a huge Israeli military action against Gaza. And the world will continue to do absolutey nothing to stop it. - M. R. November 18, 2007Any bets on a second Israeli invasion of Lebanon right after Annapolis conference?
November 7, 2007The UN yesterday called on Israel to halt its violations of Lebanese airspace, following eight consecutive days of intensive overflights.
“We have protested to the Israeli army against the air violations and we have asked that they be stopped,” Yasmina Bouziane, spokeswoman for the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil), said.
I wouldn't bet on Israel stopping the overflights right now. - M. R.
October 29, 2007Jean Ziegler, the UN special rapporteur on right to food, castigated the Israeli occupation and described it as the only "colonial regime" which refuses to abide by any international law, calling on the UN to adopt an effective policy forcing Israel to respect human rights and the Geneva Convention.
"The Israeli occupation is a colonial regime and an illegal military occupation from the UN's point of view, it continues to annex more Palestinian lands; and thus the Israeli occupation is the worst in the history of colonialism," Ziegler stated in a TV interview. June 22, 2007Israeli warplanes made low-altitude supersonic passes over southern Lebanon and the Bekaa valley in the east on Thursday, police said, adding that they were the most intense overflights this year.
With Olmert and Netanyahu having achieved all their aims in their visits to Washington, one would imagine that they think they can do precisely what they want with impunity. - M. R.
May 30, 2007In a statement, Dugard said that the extrajudicial killings by Israel is illegal under international humanitarian law and not even seems committed to the minimum requirements set by the Israeli Supreme Court last December.
He pointed out that arrests campaign are collective punishment that contradicts the Fourth Geneva Convention and harms the peace process. Collective punishment is a process Israel has honed to a fine, ugly art against Palestinians. - M. R.
March 30, 2007The 47-member Council expressed concerns that previous attempts to investigate human rights abuses in Palestine had been hindered by Israel, noting that the regime had not cooperated with two previous resolutions which dispatched the missions.
Israel is only cooperates with the UN when the UN is doing something which appears to be in Israel's favor.
Were I the chair of this UN committee, I wouldn't be holding my breath for any degree of cooperation from Israel on these fact-finding missions. - M. R. September 2, 2006"The High-Level Commission of Inquiry was established in August by a resolution of the Council which mandated it to investigate the systematic targeting and killings of civilians by Israel, examine the types of weapons used by Israel and their conformity with international law, and assess the extent and deadly impact of Israeli attacks on human life, property, critical infrastructure and environment," said the UN.
Israel will simply ignore UN findings and continue to do what it wishes militarily in Lebanon, Gaza, and anywhere else it can. - M. R.
December 24, 2004The United States is investigating another case of Israeli espionage that apparently neither the Democrats nor the Republicans want to touch until after the Nov. 2 election. This latest case involves two long-time staff members of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).
