The World's Creepiest Weapons (Nearly Ten Years Ago)

People always say that whatever technology The Powers That (Shouldn't) Be are flaunting, whatever they keep all to themselves away from public consumption is likely decades into the future... and much, much worse.

So if these are the futuristic police state horrors they were talking about nearly a decade ago, can you even imagine what lovely little goodies they've got tucked away now?

New Example of the Pentagon, DEA and Private Companies Conspiring to Beat Encryption, Track Everything You Do

Yet another report has surfaced describing how tools created by the companies selling software that can damage and hack into people’s computers are being deployed by U.S. security services. While the coverage surrounding this story focuses primarily on federal agencies it’s important to step back for a moment and view the big picture. In particular, looking at who builds, operates, and profits from mass surveillance technology offers insight into the nature of the global panopticon.

MIT and Harvard worked with NSA on SKYNET project

Newly published documents from the Edward Snowden archive show that researchers at MIT's Lincoln Lab and Harvard University have worked with the NSA on a program called SKYNET, which uses bulk location and call records to look for patterns and associations. The program appears to be directed at Pakistan, although the underlying technology could be used to analyze data collected on Americans through the Section 215 dragnets.

Ex-NSA security staffer: Apple Macs are wide open to malware

Patrick Wardle, a former NSA staffer and NASA intern who now heads up research at crowd-sourced security intelligence firm Synack, found that Apple’s defensive Gatekeeper technology can be bypassed allowing unsigned code to run. Apple’s Gatekeeper utility is pre-installed in Mac OS X PCs and used to verify code. The tool is designed so that by default it will only allow signed code to run or, depending on settings, only packages from the Mac App Store.

Congress Tells Court That Congress Can’t Be Investigated for Insider Trading

In a little-noticed brief filed last summer, lawyers for the House of Representatives claimed that an SEC investigation of congressional insider trading should be blocked on principle, because lawmakers and their staff are constitutionally protected from such inquiries given the nature of their work. The legal team led by Kerry W. Kircher, who was appointed House General Counsel by Speaker John Boehner in 2011, claimed that the insider trading probe violated the separation of powers between the legislative and executive branch.

Enron accounting and the collapse of Social Security: “It is going to be insolvent before everyone thinks”

Rumors of the collapse of the Social Security program have long been a topic of discussion with many believing that the program will collapse much sooner than the government claims, in turn leading to the start of civil unrest when Americans both young and old realize that a program they have put money into their entire life is gone.

A Shopping & Eating Guide to Non-GMO Foods

By Catherine J. Frompovich

A dear friend gifted me with a sweatshirt that said, “GMO OMG WTF Are We Eating?” I can’t tell you how much I really appreciated that thoughtful gift. I even wore it to the screening of a film about GMOs where I was a member of the panel discussion afterward. Almost everyone who saw the message gave a thumb’s up! However, once or twice I saw a different finger response, so I asked if they didn’t like the sweatshirt. Oh no, the sweatshirt was fine; they didn’t like being forced to eat foods not knowing which edibles had GMO ingredients since there is no mandatory labeling of GMOs in the USA.

Hopefully, this guide can make that easier and, certainly, more reliable. I’ve pulled together as comprehensive a guide as possible from various online sources to take into consideration as many relevant aspects and angles of the Non-GMO / GMO conundrum...

Fracking Companies Selling Their Waste Water to Farmers for Our Crops

In the midst of the troublesome California drought, innovation spouts up, invention being the mother of necessity. But just like the aftermath of the BP oil spill, how often are people allowed to actually embark on saving the day, versus the insulting "solutions" foisted on the world by the very corporations responsible for part of the problem?

It should not then be surprising that companies like Chevron are extending their magnanimous offer of "crop water" in the form of fracking waste chemicals - for a price, of course.

Will superweeds, regulation create a perfect storm in Iowa farmlands?

Let’s unpack what has happened. Farmers’ dissatisfaction with rising costs of herbicide-resistant weeds has been evident since 2008. But another superweed, Palmer amaranth, has now arrived in five Iowa counties. By 2004, this weed was already costing Southern farmers $35-40 an acre to control. Now even more tolerant to herbicides, this amaranth costs as much as $150 per acre to control in some states. But EPA’s decision to constrain glyphosate use is not just focused on Palmer amaranth, because a dozen other superweeds also plague 60 million acres of U.S. croplands. As Iowa State University’s Mike Owen conceded, “Simple and convenient tactics are failing rapidly and farmers must diversify, not just the herbicides they use, but everything.”

In March, the WHO claimed a possible link between glyphosate exposure and non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Conclusive or not, this report will be hotly debated. But what is not debated is that non-Hodgkins rates in the U.S. have doubled since the 1980s. It has become the fifth-leading cause of cancer in the United States. Farmers’ and farmworkers’ exposure to a variety of stresses already affects their health. Since they are the people who feed America, our agricultural workforce must consider whether additional safeguards are needed to avoid potential health risks.

IRS Seizes $107,000 from Business Owner for Making Cash Deposits

In recent years, America’s absurd civil forfeiture laws have been facing heavy criticism from the public, especially for the effect they have on small businesses that deal in cash. Toxic Light: The Dark Side of Energy Saving Bulbs

A look at how dangerous the new energy-saving light bulbs are. The EU has banned many incandescent bulbs in favor of Compact Florescent Lights (CFLs). CFLs emit serious toxins while being used. All Florescent lights contain Mercury. There is enough Mercury to pose a serious health risk in the event of a CLF breakage. People are being told to run out of the building for 15 minutes, open windows and turn off the heat. Additionally the bulbs do not last as long as advertised and they take a long time to warm up, decreasing in brightness over time. The light they emit is not a full spectrum steady light. Few Bulbs actually get recycled and they need to be treated as hazardous materials when discarding them. Consumers be alerted!

Avengers: Age of Ultron – Gods of the Rising Technocratic Aeon

Joss Whedon’s follow-up to The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, is setting new box office records for Marvel, and has roughly the same degree of critical response as the first. A few days ago, I analyzed the first in anticipation for the follow-up that premiered in the U.S. this weekend, noting the A.I. takeover plot, and the sequel was even more esoterically themed and blatant in its presentation. Hollywood is making it difficult for me not to write the same A.I. analysis over and over, but some new ground is tread here to investigate in the midst of the same pattern we’ve been witnessing of late, the extinction of man through mass depopulation and his subjugation and/or replacement with an A.I. control grid.

Boeing 787 software bug can shut down planes' generators IN FLIGHT

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a new airworthiness directive (PDF) for Boeing's 787 because a software bug shuts down the plane's electricity generators every 248 days.

“We have been advised by Boeing of an issue identified during laboratory testing,” the directive says. That issue sees “The software counter internal to the generator control units (GCUs) will overflow after 248 days of continuous power, causing that GCU to go into failsafe mode.”

When the GCU is in failsafe mode it isn't making any power. That'll be bad news if all four of the GCUs aboard a 787 were powered up at the same time, because all will then shut down, “resulting in a loss of all AC electrical power regardless of flight phase.”

Oil Prices Up, Gasoline Prices Up

“A rebound in crude oil prices has fueled up gasoline prices in the last week across the United States, with even bigger spikes in the West Coast, where refinery problems have returned. The national average stands at a four month high, though for this date prices remain at their lowest since 2009. Late last week, West Texas Intermediate crude oil stood near $58 a barrel, the highest since December 15, 2014. That price stands some $10 a barrel higher than a month ago, and has been a key contributor to the rise in gasoline prices that many states are witnessing. Refinery issues along the West Coast have added insult to injury for Californians, where prices are up by 25 cents per gallon just in the last week in some areas.”

British Doctors Now Asking Elderly If They’re Ready to Die

Ever since the Affordable Care Act was passed, Americans have been asking themselves if our healthcare will ever resemble the UK’s socialized medical system. Some have greeted it with praise, while others have been concerned that our healthcare could turn to death panels to cut costs. Now the UK’s National Health Service has given us another unfortunate condition to look forward to. They recently told all doctors to ask every patient over 75 if they would like to establish a “do not resuscitate” order for future emergencies. In some cases, the doctors are ordering their nurses to cold-call every elderly patient, and everyone with a long-term condition, to see if they have “thought about resuscitation.”

New Designer Vape Drug Made Guy Think He Was Thor, Attempt to Have Sex with a Tree

This is one instance where you might wanna just say “no.”

Remember the horror of the Miami cannibal attack which was later potentially attributed to designer drug bath salts?

Apparently a new cheap, easily available, synthetic drug is making its way around Florida, and while there are no reports of cannibalism (yet), if one came in at this point, it wouldn’t be all that surprising...

71% OF WALL STREET BANKERS ADMIT THEY ARE TOO BIG TO FAIL (AND UNDERPAID)

Wall Streeters are not happy. According to the latest Bloomberg poll, 48% believe they are paid less (or much less) than they had hoped for.

With the biggest banks cutting costs as new regulations force derisking and deleveraging (in theory), pay is taking a hit (although not so much for the CEOs). As one headhunter noted, "they're still making decent money, but it’s nothing like 2007," but ironically, a massive 71% of Wall Street bankers admit that their banks are still Too Big To Fail.

Public School “Child Nutrition Supervisor” Served Students Reeking, Six-Year-Old Pork

(Nutritional Anarchy) Stories continually coming out of public schools illustrate time and again that our school lunches are “bad,” but this story makes Michelle Obama’s school lunch program look like a fancy dinner at a four-star restaurant.

After a determination made by someone given the title “Child Nutrition Supervisor” and the school’s cafeteria managers who performed “tests,” a decision was made to serve school children six-year-old pork in Hawkins County, Tennessee.

First of all… if you have to perform tests before you serve something obviously questionable enough to warrant tests to hundreds of trusting, innocent children…

Here’s an actual quote about the meat from local news outlet WBIR:

“The actual woman making a stink about it said it smelled so bad they made gravy to put over the meat to give it a smell and give it a better taste,” said [Hawkins County Commissioner Michael] Herrell.

Ew.

THIS HACKER HAS IMPLANTED A CHIP IN HIS BODY TO EXPLOIT YOUR ANDROID PHONE

Plenty of people these days are prepared to augment their bodies with face furniture, piercings, rings and tattoos. But would you implant a chip in your hand to show how easy it is to exploit an Android phone? That’s what former US navy petty officer Seth Wahle did, in an attempt to demonstrate how business networks could be compromised.

With dissent fermenting on both sides of the political aisle, more than 2,000 civil society groups are urging Congress to reject Fast Track trade authority, warning that the legislation would pave the way for approval of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), the 12-nation proposal they say “replicates and expands on the most damaging provisions of past U.S. trade pacts.”

Utility-issued 'smart' meters explode on 5,000 homes after truck rams utility pole

Thousands of California residents were left without power recently after their so-called "smart" meters exploded due to an unexpected power surge. According to CBS Sacramento, more than 5,000 homes in the Stockton area were left with blackened, charred, and completely destroyed smart meters after a dump truck crashed into a nearby utility pole, pulling the static line down onto the distribution line.

When the two lines intersect, stated PG&E spokeswoman Brandi Ehlers to the media, the resultant surge causes a major overload to the system. And when smart meters are involved, this overload can cause the meters themselves to pop and literally blow up, potentially causing a fire or other property damage not typically caused by traditional analog meters.

US Postal Service is CRAP!

Webmaster's Commentary:

In yet another symptom of the decline and fall of the American Empire, the US postal service has, for the second time this year, lost a package headed towards me routed through their Richmond, CA sorting center. Attempts to complain about the missing package are met with a non-working customer complaint email system, as seen above. The Richmond center has been a source of major complaints about missing/stolen items for years and every 6 months the USPS issues a statement that the problem has been solved, and we quickly learn it has not. America the greatest nation on earth? They can't even deliver the mail reliably any more!

Apple Bans Fart Apps From the Apple Watch

Apple is pitching the Apple Watch as a time-saver, a fitness companion and a stylish fashion accessory. But it could also be a pretty great office prank tool, if the makers of the “Fart Watch” app had their way.

Essentially, the app turns the Apple Watch and a paired up iPhone into a whoopie cushion for the 21st century. Place the iPhone near your intended target, wait for the opportune moment, then tap the Apple Watch app to release fake flatulence at will.

But unfortunately for the Fart Watch developers, Apple doesn’t see this all as one big gas.
