A.P. Seeks to Rein in Sites Using Its Content

They said they did not want to stop the appearance of articles around the Web, but to exercise some control over the practice and to profit from it.

Webmaster's Commentary:

AP stood side by side with the US Government in selling the lies that led to war in Iraq. For that reason I prefer to not link to AP any longer and I am having my software engineer working on a system to go through our database and erase every article that has AP as a source (it's a small percentage as it turns out).

What is going on here is that AP's revenues are drying up because their primary customers, TV news and newspapers, are being abandoned by their audiences, precisely because they were all party to the lies of the US Government.

AP simply wants to co-opt the audiences the blogs have built over the years.

Many times when I link to an AP story it is to point out the lies and deceptions. I cannot imagine that any contracts entered into with AP to license their content will allow such unrestrained critiques.

So in the end, and I am certain most other news aggregator sites will agree with me, the simplest and easiest solution is to simply avoid all AP stories entirely.

After all, we need to move forward into the new and more truthful, not return to the past lies and deceptions.

AP to Aggregators: We Will Sue You

As newspaper continue to founder and fail, the clear benefit of Google especially — to direct hordes of traffic back to the original site — is increasingly blurred by the anger and envy of newspaper executives over Google's ability to monetize aggregation at all while paying nothing towards content creation.

It has become virtually a populist notion among many in the industry that aggregators who scrape a headline and a paragraph are taking something of value, if not outright stealing, and not operating under a fair use exception even if they drive traffic to the source.

"We can no longer stand by and watch others walk off with our work under misguided legal theories," AP Chairman Dean Singleton said at the AP annual meeting in San Diego.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I love the rant about the cost of content creation, when mostly AP just accepts press releases from the White House and corporations and forwards them as news.

Reflections on a Largely Forgotten Book: Herbert Schiller's The Mind Managers (1973)

Dedicated to the notion that "the flow of information in a complex society is a source of unparalleled power," his book was an important early effort to show how corporate thought-controllers" used "mainstream" (corporate) media and other means to conduct "a national communications pageant" (Schiller 1973, p.6) in support of "the state-capitalist [United States] economy" and its vast global and military reach. To a degree that I (perhaps naively) find surprising, his book is missing from the endnotes, indexes, and bibliographies of left media analysts. It disappeared in the bibliographical mist even as it seems to have anticipated numerous critical and important themes in a subsequent and impressive literature of left media and propaganda criticism in the U.S.

Editor's note: RAW STORY regrets an early version of this article was published without an editor's approval. This article has been revised and edited.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The part that was removed from the original story was where Poplawski was concerned about zionist control of the US Government and the media. This appears to be the ONLY change from the original to the current article, which illustrates that Raw Story now bows and scrapes to their masters.

Why does the 'Times' only let Arabs criticize Israel?

I have noticed that, almost without exception, the only critics of Israeli policy that are given op-ed space, not only in the NY Times, but elsewhere in the mainstream media, are either Palestinians such as Rashid Khalidi, Saree Makdisi, or George Bisharat, or in the most extreme example, Libyan president Muammar Qaddafi, being given space to promote a one-state solution (an assignment that, quite clearly, was intended to permanently marginalize the idea). It has long been the same with the Times letter section, in which criticism of Israel seems also to be reserved for writers with non-Western names. I know of several people, besides myself, Jewish and non-Jewish, who have attempted, without success, to get letters published in the paper but to no avail and have since given up.

Something Is Rotten at PBS

But even though Reid did the reporting for the film, he was cut out of the film when it aired this week.

And the film didn't present Reid's bottom line for health care reform – don't let health insurance companies profit from selling basic health insurance.

They can sell for-profit insurance for extras – breast enlargements, botox, hair transplants.

But not for the basic health needs of the American people.

Instead, the film that aired Monday pushed the view that Americans be required to purchase health insurance from for-profit companies.

And the film had a deceptive segment that totally got wrong the lesson of Reid's previous documentary – Sick Around the World.

Story punches reporters in face; goes unnoticed

Dude just stood there and told reporters -- twice, and matter-of-factly both times -- that his friend who just killed three cops was motivated "by the Zionist-controlled government," and was upset, "that there was about to be military policing," and by "the fact that there was about to be a gun ban."

Zionist-controlled government. Was about to be military policing. The fact that there was about to be a gun ban.

Jeffrey Goldberg, a writer for The Atlantic and a prominent supporter of the Iraq war, has a bone or two to pick with Stephen Walt and John Mearsheimer. Reviewing their book, The Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy for The New Republic, he disdained "their methodological arrogance, their failure to meet any serious standard of empirical inquiry, their slavish reliance on second- and third-hand works" – this from a "reporter" who, before the invasion of Iraq, wrote two extensive pieces for the New Yorker detailing the now-debunked Bush administration talking point that Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden were allies.

The End of Conservative Talk Radio?

"The dirty little secret of conservative talk radio is that the average age of listeners is 67 and rising... What's more, it's the Internet that is the fast-growing and arguably more powerful political medium -- and it is the province of the young and liberal. The only sensible market view of conservative talk is that it will contract and be reduced, in the coming years, to a much more rarefied format."

Censored by the New York Times: The Story Behind a Political Cartoon that the Publisher didn’t want you to see

I paid the cost of the ad in full.

There are hundreds of vital issues on which most Americans stand united. By controlling the discussions of the day and by hiding the important issues, the media create an impression that Americans are divided along party lines on almost every issue of import.

Respectable, "mainstream", and "serious" American foreign policy differences that are allowed to see the light of day in our media fall into one of two camps.

She would then generate a list of stocks that could move quickly on good news. Jeff would then go to work calling the companies to try to find anything good we could say about them. I would call the analysts to see I they were hearing anything. When we found a stock that looked ready technically to break out, or where the supply had been mopped up, and Jeff found something positive at the company, and I knew the analyst community didn’t know anything positive, we would load up with call options and common stock and then give the good news to our favorite analysts who liked the stock so they could go do their promotion. That would get the buzz going and we would then be able to liquidate the position into the buzz for a handsome profit." (Confessions of a Street Addict, page 61).

Washington Post Columnist Gives Private AIPAC Talks

Journalists should be allowed to make money from speaking engagements, but I find Beinart's appearances unseemly. Or anyway, it's an important advocacy group on a central issue in the election. I wonder what a Time and Washington Post columnist is advocating to advocates about.

More important, Beinart's 2006 book, The Good Fight, urged Americans to make their country great again by going to war against terror in Iraq and elsewhere and in doing so utterly suppressed the Israel/Palestine issue.

"This is the first time that nanoparticles have been shown to target tumours in such a selective way, and this is an exciting step forward in the field.

"Once inside the cell, the gene enclosed in the particle recognises the cancerous environment and switches on. The result is toxic, but only to the offending cells, leaving healthy tissue unaffected.

Recently, government-sponsored agencies like NIH have moved toward open access of scientific findings. That is, the results are published where anyone can see them, and in fact (for the NIH) after 12 months the papers must be publicly accessible. Astronomers, for example, almost always post their papers on Astro-ph, a place where journal-accepted papers can be accessed before they are published.

Protesters invoked tariff-weary Colonists, blasted Obama’s $787 billion stimulus plan at rally.

I tagged this under Corporate Media because all morning I am getting these stories about major tax protests (I loved the "Off with his head" chant in Fullerton; made me proud to have gone to school there) over the internet and yet have not seen a single such protest reported on ABCNNBBCBS. MSNBC led off with a video tour of the home from where a young girl was kidnapped some time ago. Yeah, it's a shame, but the girl isn't there; just furniture and it doesn't actually affect my life directly.

Taxes affect my life. Taxes have wrecked my life, to be honest, and I find stories about my fellow Americans getting pissed off and chanting "Off with his head" far more relevant to my life than stories about the homes of missing girls, Chandra Levy, or Michael Jackson.

Discipline of Military Redirects Dropouts - Teaching kids to kill provides leadership skills!

New York Times ERIK ECKHOLM - FORT GORDON, Ga. — By his own account, Donte’ A. Dungey had no motivation in high school, sleeping through classes and sometimes showing up only for the free lunch to reduce the burden on his mother, who was struggling with nine other children. Held back three times and scheduled to enter the 10th grade at nearly 18, he knew that “high school just wasn’t going to work for me,” he said.

But he was also ready to change. More than five months ago, Mr. Dungey took up residence in a program for dropouts called Youth Challenge, run by the National Guard, that is proving effective at using military atmosphere and discipline to turn around at-risk teenagers.

Bailout for The Mainstream Media May be Next

Does the News Industry Deserve a Bailout? That was the headline in a recent article written in Time Magazine. Written by Douglas A. McIntyre, the article argues “the strategic value of the print media comes from the centuries that it has served as a check and balance to the central government both in the United States and elsewhere ...Politicians have every reason to want to see print media fail. That can be said tongue in cheek, but too many governors and congressmen have lost jobs after newspaper investigations to make the relationship between Fourth Estate and politicians a comfortable one. A neutered press would benefit a number of elected officials.

Fox Admits To Planting Political Brainwashing In Popular TV Shows

A corporate video currently being showcased on another part of Murdoch’s media empire,, shows Fox executives and stars of its universally recognized shows bragging about how they use the platform of hit shows that are broadcast globally to implant messages about the supposed threat of global warming.

This is not the first time Fox have been enthusiastic in propagandizing for the establishment. In 2003, Rupert Murdoch himself admitted that the corporation had “tried” to help the Bush administration sell the war in Iraq.

A public stoning in Germany

A few days later, Dierkes gave an interview to the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung (WAZ), a conservative paper based in the nearby city of Essen. He explained the demands of the World Social Forum, and requested that the published interview should stress that this had nothing to do with anti-Semitism -- a qualification that invariably needs to be made in Germany, except when there is suspicion of Islamophobia. Predictably, his precautions were in vain; scenting a political coup, the reporter published his article without including the qualification.

Undisclosed Losses at Merrill Lynch Lead to a Trading Inquiry - But No One Ever Goes to Jail

The New York Times LOUISE STORY and ERIC DASH March 6, 2009

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — One Merrill Lynch trader apparently gambled away more than $120 million in the currency markets. Others seemingly lost hundreds of millions on tricky credit derivatives.

But somehow all this red ink did not spill into plain view until after Merrill earmarked billions for bonuses and staggered into the arms of Bank of America.

Merrill hemorrhaged $13.8 billion during the final three months of 2008 alone.

Obama Officially Picks Genachowski To Chair FCC

One of Washington's worst-kept secrets -- that Julius Genachowski would be the next Federal Communications Commission chairman -- ended Tuesday when President Barack Obama formally nominated Genachowski for the position.

After Obama won the presidential election, Genachowski was an immediate odds-on favorite for the FCC position given his background that is steeped in technology and that included a stint as legal counsel to ex-FCC chairman Reed Hundt.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Genachowski is also the son of holocaust survivors, so I think we can write off the First Amendment on any broadcasts related to Israel or the history of WW2.

Payday as the Enemy of Truth

It is a rule of thumb in the life of the freelance journalist, almost as sure as the law of gravity, that the more you get paid for an article, the greater likelihood it will turn to mush at the hands of too many people paid to “edit” the work. We might even work out a financial equation for this degenerative process: for every cent-increase in per-word payment, there will be a meaning-decrease in every word. Or, rather, the words will take on all sorts of meanings you never thought they had. Or the words will pop their heads into scenes where they had not been meant to pop. Or the editors will attach like ticks to the ideas of the people quoted and suck out entirely, perfectly, inanely, the meaning of what the person really said.

White House Lets Limbaugh Be Voice Of GOP Opposition

After the radio host delivered a raucous red-meat speech Saturday afternoon at the Conservative Political Action Conference, White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel said on CBS's "Face the Nation" the next day: "He is the voice and the intellectual force and energy behind the Republican Party, and he has been upfront about what he views, and hasn't stepped back from that, which is he hopes for failure."

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs added his voice yesterday, saying reporters should ask Republicans "whether they agree with what Rush Limbaugh said . . . in wishing and hoping for economic failure in this country."

Webmaster's Commentary:

Here is where this will blow up on the GOP face.

1. "Pills" Limbaugh and his ditto heads, in chanting "I hope Obama fails", are showing that winning at political contests is far more important to them than the welfare of their fellow Americans. Apparently millions of homeless Americans is not too great a price to pay to score points for the 2010 elections.

2. By openly taking a stance of wanting the current administration to fail, "Pills" had given the Obama administration the perfect scapegoat to blame for that inevitable failure we know is coming, "Pills" himself, and by labeling "Pills" as the voice of the GOP, the GOP as a whole.

Limbaugh's ego has led him into a trap.

Why I believe the theory of the Israel lobby

The issue is not that these people have backward views of the Middle East. There is not much anyone can do about that. Iraq, where terrorists are now part of the government, has taught them nothing. The issue is that they are routinely granted access to mainstream publications. The realists whom Chait despises don't get that access; Mearsheimer has been out at the New York Times ever since he made the mistake of opposing the Iraq war. Nor do leftwing critics of Israel get access--Glenn Greenwald, Tony Kushner. Nor do Arab-Americans. It is true, as Chait observed some time ago, that Steve Walt has a blog at Foreign Policy. Great. And yes, I believe that things are softening, and we are winning, under Obama. But Walt's perch is still the exception that proves the rule.

Senate bars FCC from revisiting Fairness Doctrine

The Senate has barred federal regulators from reviving a policy, abandoned two decades ago, that required balanced coverage of issues on public airwaves.

The Senate vote on the so-called Fairness Doctrine was in part a response to conservative radio talk show hosts who feared that Democrats would try to revive the policy to ensure liberal opinions got equal time.

The Federal Communications Commission implemented the doctrine in 1949, but stopped enforcing it in 1987 after deciding new sources of information and programming made it unnecessary.

President Barack Obama says he has no intention of reimposing the doctrine, but Republicans, led by Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., say they still need a guarantee the government would not establish new quotas or guidelines on programming.

Frank was accused and convicted of killing 13-year-old Mary Phagan in 1913.

Phagan worked in a pencil factory Frank managed in downtown Atlanta.

"Worst Is Yet to Come:" Americans' Standard of Living Permanently Changed

Yahoo! Finance Tech Ticker | Posted Feb 17, 2009 |

An Interview with Howard Davidowitz

But "the worst is yet to come," according to Howard Davidowitz, chairman of Davidowitz & Associates, who believes American's standard of living is undergoing a "permanent change" - and not for the better as a result of:

* An $8 trillion negative wealth effect from declining home values.
* A $10 trillion negative wealth effect from weakened capital markets.
* A $14 trillion consumer debt load amid "exploding unemployment", leading to "exploding bankruptcies."

The end of rampant consumerism is ultimately a good thing, he says, but the unraveling of an economy built on debt-fueled spending will be painful for years to come.

Firestorms and Deep Freeze: Climate Change May Bring Both

Global warming deniers keep pointing to snowstorms as proof that climatologists are wrong. But both extreme heat and cold are on tap.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The cult, still eager to get their hands on your carbon tax money, are trying to equate those who question the science behind their claims as "deniers", apparently to put them in the same class of people as "9-11 deniers" or (horrors) "Holocaust deniers."

But as the cult changes their name from "global warming" to "catastrophic climate change" this is in effect an admission that their earlier prognostications have not come to pass. The attempt to claim that the severe cooling weather is the result of human caused global warming may look good in the science fiction film from which they apparently stole the idea (along with scenes used in Al Gore's movie), but it is not really science.

The bottom line is that this is all about creating a new crisis as an excuse to take more money and freedom from you.

Jewish Community of Venezuela Fears for Their Safety

Webmaster's Commentary:

Okay. Here is the part FOX isn't telling you. All this "Anti-Semitism" in Venezuela was kicked off by the attack on the synagogue where a bunch of guys ran through and spray-painted the walls. This was headline news around the world (while the six totally destroyed Mosques in Gaza did not rate a mention on ABCNNBBCBS). Yesterday, the Venezuelan police arrested the vandals, who turned out to be other police officers AND THE SECURITY GUARD FOR THE SYNAGOGUE ITSELF!

Reporters Without Borders and Washington's Coups

British press baron Lord Northcliff said, "News is something that someone, somewhere wants to keep secret, everything else is advertising." If this is true, then U.S. government funding of Reporters Without Borders must be news, because the organization and its friends in Washington have gone to extraordinary lengths to cover it up. In spite of 14 months of stonewalling by the National Endowment for Democracy over a Freedom of Information Act request and a flat denial from RSF executive director Lucie Morillon, the NED has revealed that Reporters Without Borders received grants over at least three years from the International Republican Institute.

Webmaster's Commentary:

For the record, WhatReallyHappened has received no grants whatsoever to operate. We survive on private donations and advertisers.

And coffee.

We could not survive without that finest kind Kona coffee.

As in, "the spoon won't lay down after we stir it" strong.

As in, "that dark brown coffee mug was actually white when we bought it last week" strong.

Dems May Hold Talk Radio “Accountability” Hearings

Democrat senator Debbie Stabenow has told nationally syndicated talk host Bill Press she will push for talk radio “accountability hearings” in order to impose government-mandated “balance” in the radio marketplace. According to the Gladwin, Michigan, senator the airwaves are “dominated by one view” that “overwhelms people’s opinions — and, unfortunately, incorrectly,” and said that “right-wing conservative talk hosts” are “trying to make people angry and saying all kinds of things that aren’t true and so on,” Radio Ink reports on February 5.

Webmaster's Commentary:

NO! You're @#$%ing kidding me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(And for any radio executives reading this, who need to balance their points of view, I am available!)
