How Safe Is the Swine Flu Vaccine?
By SPIEGEL Staff
Swine flu symptoms may generally be mild but in a bid to prevent a pandemic health officials and pharmaceutical companies are planning to administer a new, little-tested vaccine to millions of Germans. Meanwhile, officials in the United States are taking a more cautious approach to fighting the virus.

When the going gets tough, editorial boards turn to John Bolton

If you feel like you have been reading a lot of John Bolton recently, it's because you have. A Nexis search reveals that over the past 12 weeks, John Bolton has been published on the op-ed page of a major American publication nine times.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The reason Bolton has been getting so much "page/web/face time is that John has never met a potential US military conflict he hasn't just loved; particularly when that conflict may well pit the US against any one of Israel's many existential threat, like Iraq, and now... Iran.

Of course, John's never seen a day of warfare up close in his life; he's an attorney whose bio indicates a series of jobs in and around Washington DC.

Most people who have actually seen combat, up close and personal, are generally not so deeply in love with war as the ultimate solution for everything as Bolton appears to be.

The drumbeats for war against Iran are beating faster and faster, with Obama and Gates haven been given their marching orders from Tel Aviv recently in a series of meetings there and in Washington.

Obama has indicated now that Iran has only until the end of September to acquiesce to his demands. After that time frame, we could well see an "October Surprise" in the form of an Israeli-led/US-supported attack against Iran.

Murdoch vows to charge for all online content

However, they resulted in a $3.4bn net loss for the full year, down from net income of $5.4bn a year earlier, reflecting $8.9bn in impairment charges.

The sweeping decision by the owner of titles including The News of the World and The Australian to abandon the practice of giving away news in exchange for attracting a large audience for advertisers could embolden other publishers warily examining paid content models.

"We intend to charge for all our news websites," Mr Murdoch said.

"If we're successful, we'll be followed by all media," he added, predicting "significant revenues" from charging for differentiated news online.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Rupe, ol' boy; the reason you are losing audience and ad revenue has nothing to do with your business model and everything to do with the bias, slant, and deception regularly peddled by your rags as "News."

It doesn't matter if you change how you sell your lies; people still will not buy them.

People want the truth, and they will go where they need to to get it.

London Times Smears 9/11 Truth Movement As Racist, Nazi Like, Stupid

A vicious attack piece in the Rupert Murdoch owned London Times has linked the so called "birther" phenomenon with 9/11 Truth, in an effort to imply that the movement is inherently racist and "intellectually scary" (read stupid).

In an article entitled To tell you the truth, these conspiracists scare me, Times "journalist" James Bone equates those who question the government version of events on 9/11 with "crackpot birthers", referring to those who have questioned Barack Obama's eligibility to serve as President.

Rahmbo browbeat network heads to carry Obama's health care presser
Rick Moran
It is the simple exercise of power. Obama's got more of it than the TV networks.
And if you have someone in the White House perfectly willing to exercise that power by making implied threats, there isn't much even giant corporations can do to deny Obama what he wants.
In the days before President Obama's last news conference, as the networks weighed whether to give up a chunk of their precious prime time, Rahm Emanuel went straight to the top.

Leading Journalists Expose Major Cover-ups in Media

Pierre Salinger announced to the world on Nov. 8, 1996, that he’d received documents proving that a US Navy missile had accidentally downed [TWA flight 800]. That same day, FBI’s Jim Kallstrom called a press conference. A man raised his hand and asked why the Navy was involved in the recovery and investigation while a possible suspect. “Remove him!” [Kallstrom] yelled. Two men leapt over to the questioner and grabbed him by the arms. There was a momentary chill in the air after the guy had been dragged out of the room. Kallstrom and entourage acted as if nothing had happened. [Kallstrom was later hired by CBS.]

Consequences

One has to wonder why people never learn from the lessons of history. Why is it that the rulers and enforcers of laws turn a blind eye to the atrociousness and retributions leveled upon them from days past, justified by the brutality of power madness currently sweeping the landscape? Do they think they are going to continue along this destructive path and not suffer the consequences when history repeatedly proves otherwise? Are they that stupid to believe they can treat people like herds of stock and not get gored?

Obama: The Empire's LatestPuppet

Obama Is No Sell-Out:
Just The Empire's LatestPuppet
by Larry Pinkey
July 30, 2009 Issue 335
While the continuing enormous loss of jobs and other forms of economic disenfranchisement of everyday people of all colors increases in this land by leaps and bounds, so does racism, hypocrisy, and corporate greed under this Obama presidency. These intolerable realities did not come about by mere coincidence or happenstance, and President Barack Obama himself is very much complicitous in this. The bamboozling by Obama of the people of this nation cannot and will not stand indefinitely.

The Great Tax Con Job

Republicans are using the T-word - taxes - to attack the Obama healthcare program. It's a strategy based in a lie.

A very small niche of America's uber-wealthy have pulled off what may well be the biggest con job in the history of our republic, and they did it in a startlingly brief 30 or so years. True, they spent over three billion dollars to make it happen, but the reward to them was in the hundreds of billions - and will continue to be.

Dan Rather slams the corporate media

Dan Rather slammed the corporate media in a talk Tuesday for the erosion of quality journalism, and the corporatization, politicization, and “trivialization” of news.

He also said:

A democracy and free people cannot thrive without a fiercely independent press.

This is true, of course.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This from the guy who rocketed to media stardom by reporting that John F. Kennedy's head "rocketed forward" from the fatal head shot in Dallas.

When Jim Garrison's trial of Clay Shaw forced the Zapruder film into the public, it was revealed that Rather had "mis-stated" the facts. Kennedy's head is shoved backward by the force of the gunshot.

Why Obama should make George W. Bush his Mideast envoy.

It's a full-court press on the Israelis, and the American wish list is long. They want Israel to stop expanding settlements; to stop building Jewish neighborhoods in East Jerusalem; and for hawks in the government to chill out while the U.S. is negotiating with Iran. And yet, odds are, they'll come back to Washington empty-handed, for reasons having to do as much with atmospherics as policy: Team Obama just doesn't have Israel's full trust.

But there is someone who does—someone who could use a job, someone who argued straightforwardly for a Palestinian state, and yet someone who has the implicit admiration and regard of Israel. President Obama needs a new envoy to the region who can get results—and George W. Bush is his man.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Are these people out of their minds? Bush got along with Israel because he simply gave them whatever they wanted, including thousands of American lives to smash up Iraq and full protection on 9-11.

If Bush makes the same requests of Israel as Obama is, Israel will treat him just as disdainfully.

Left-Wing Website With Direct Ties To White House Smears Alex Jones

As the establishment intensifies its efforts to demonize its political adversaries as extremists and terrorists, an George Soros-funded left-wing website with direct ties to the Obama White House has parroted the months-old debunked smear that Pittsburgh cop killer Richard Poplawski was an Alex Jones fan.

MSNBC Implies People Skeptical Of Government Are Psychologically Insane

During a discussion of the Obama birth certificate controversy, MSNBC host Chris Matthews and his guests implied that anyone who questions the official 9/11 story, thinks the Bilderberg group are exercising power to create a world government, people who are worried about gun control and immigration, or even people who are merely skeptical of government, are psychologically insane.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This tells us that the Obama birth certificate story is being used as a straw man to "poison the well" of public discussion about the government.
The media are going to fan this issue up, then Obama will show his real birth certificate, and the corporate media will use that to attack discussions about 9-11, Israel, the validity of the wars, torture, etc.

Other Unknown Facts : The Truth About Cops and Race

The Truth About Cops and Race
By Michael Filozof
Last week, Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates, a black man, was arrested by a white police officer for disorderly conduct. Gates accused the officer of racism. President Obama created a national media firestorm by commenting on the arrest, saying the cops "acted stupidly" and that the U.S. has a "long history" of "African-Americans and Latinos being stopped by law enforcement disproportionately, and that's just a fact."
It's that old liberal stereotype once again - bigoted white cops picking on poor, innocent blacks, just like Selma, Ala. in 1963. Really?
The truth is quite the opposite: minority suspects are likely to kill or injure white officers at a rate much higher than the minority component of the overall population.

Walter Cronkite: Definitional Journalist Saw Big Media's Flaws

The former CBS anchorman cared not just about the next story but about the future of reporting in a country where was known for the better part of a half century as "the most trusted name in news."

So it should come as little surprise that what worried Cronkite in the last years of his life was the collapse of journalistic quality and responsibility that came with the increasing dominance of newsgathering by a handful of media corporations.

"I think it is absolutely essential in a democracy to have competition in the media, a lot of competition, and we seem to be moving away from that," Cronkite told me the last time we spoke about media issues.

Cronkite's best moment was when he did exactly that which the modern journalist today insists they must not ever do -- directly contradict claims from government and military officials and suggest that such claims should not be believed. The so-called "falling soldier" photo was not taken near Cerro Muriano in the southern Andalusia region, as has long been claimed, but about 50 kilometres (30 miles) away near the town of Espejo, the newspaper said.

JoblogoBaltimore-based Sinclair Broadcast Group Inc., which is controlled by David Smith and his family and operates 58 television stations, said if it can't restructure its heavy debt load it will have to file for bankruptcy. 'The Select Few' Are Cashing in: Shocking Corruption at the Washington Post

If you want to know what really matters in Washington, don't go to Capitol Hill for one of those hearings, or pay attention to those staged White House "town meetings." They're just for show. What really happens -- the serious business of Washington -- happens in the shadows, out of sight, off the record. Case in point: Katharine Weymouth, the publisher of The Washington Post -- one of the most powerful people in DC -- invited top officials from the White House, the Cabinet and Congress to her home for an intimate, off-the-record dinner to discuss health care reform with some of her reporters and editors covering the story.

The NYT calls Iranian interrogation tactics "torture"

Virtually every tactic which the article describes the Iranians as using has been used by the U.S. during the War on Terror, while several tactics authorized by Bush officials (waterboarding, placing detainees in coffin-like boxes, hypothermia) aren't among those the article claims are used by the Iranians. Nonetheless, "torture" appears to be a perfectly fine term for The New York Times to use to describe what the Iranians do, but one that is explicitly banned to describe what the U.S. did.

Washington Post publisher apologizes for plan to hold paid dinners with officials, journalists

The Washington Post's publisher apologized to readers Sunday for a plan to charge business leaders and lobbyists for intimate dinner discussions with government officials and the newspaper's journalists.

A flier surfaced last week promoting a plan to charge $25,000 to sponsor one of a series of dinner parties that would include off-the-record conversations with Post journalists and access to Washington insiders. The series was canceled Thursday.

Western Media Persists in Propaganda About Iraq’s Purported WMD

The mainstream media is reporting that former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein told his FBI interrogators after his capture that he lied about having weapons of mass destruction (WMD) because he feared Iran. But there’s just one problem with this claim: Saddam Hussein never claimed to have WMD, but , as everybody knows, repeatedly denied that this was so.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The corporate media stood shoulder to shoulder with the US Government as the US Government lied us all into a war of conquest. They had plenty of opportunity to do their real job and report on the obvious lies in company with the blogs. But the corporate media sold their souls for a free ride on air Force 1 and their name on the "A" party lists in DC.

And now the corporate media are trapped. They cannot go back and admit they helped the government lie us into a war that has already claimed so many thousands of our young people. They have no choice but to try to bluff their way through; to lie their way out of a mess they lied themselves into.

But, this is a new world. The image of an industry, a company, a politician, and indeed even that of a nation is no longer the illusion crafted by public relations people. The corporate media have lied themselves out of their ability to control the minds of the world. People use the internet to find out the facts and the internet does not suffer spin and propaganda (despite efforts by PR companies to the contrary).

The blogs see the world as it really is, not as the masters of delusions would present it.

But the corporate media cannot change sides. We are way past that point. So they are fighting a holding action; trying to prop up the lies, while their industry collapses around them from its own rot and decay.

They lied. They died. This pathetic attempt to re-sell the deception is the start of the death rattle.

Insane Sarah Palin, Late At Night On July 4, Threatens To Sue Entire Internet, Via Twitter

Honestly, this is what Sarah Palin twatted on Saturday Night, July 4th, Independence Day, in America.

Her link goes to (of course) Scientologist nut and sub-literate weirdo Greta Van Susteren’s blog on FoxNews.com, where Greta has helpfully (?) posted seven pages of legal threats from Palin’s lawyers, although you can’t actually read beyond the first vague page of whining bullshit, because Greta/Fox can’t figure out how to operate the Internet.

But, from other websites, we gather Palin’s lawyers plan lawsuits against MSNBC, the New York Times, the Huffington Post, the Washington Post, individual bloggers in Alaska, and other such anti-Palin forces such as “rain on your wedding day” and static cling.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I smell blood in the water! The lady doth protest WAY too much.

And if Caribou Barbie thinks she can control the public's view of her in the age of the internet then she really is as clueless as she came across during the campaign!

Zionist Bullshit II: The Contest

But now here is your big chance to show that you too can demonstrate how utterly stupid a Zionist argument can be. And we here at Mantiq al-Tayr wish to note that this contest, in part, is due to Zionist slumlord Sam Zell who owns the LA Times and the Baltimore Sun, at least until both go out of business. May God hasten that day. But I digress.

IS THE US CORPORATE MEDIA RACIST?

Of course, I might have missed something here. Maybe there is another reason that the American Corporate media thinks that Iran hijacking boats in their own territorial waters is a major news story while Israel hijacking a boat in international waters is not. And if that is true; if there really is a reason why the two stories are being treated differently, I welcome any member of the corporate media to call into my radio show and explain it to me.

Because until they do, I think we have no choice left but to conclude that the difference in coverage between the two stories is that the American Corporate Media just don't like black people!

Absurdity and Corruption Beyond Measure.

It’s been crystal clear for some time that the media is nothing more than a slimy, lie machine. If you hear something from the mass media you can take it for granted that it’s a lie or certainly an exaggeration or a distortion. In certain cases where the news doesn’t fit with the media’s agenda they just don’t report it at all, as in the hijacking of the Free Gaza ship and the imprisonment of the passengers. Yesterday we learned that this doesn’t even touch the level of corruption that defines today’s mass media. Yesterday we saw what they have been up to at the Washington Post. It’s painful to read the spin coming out of the mouths of the corporate heads.

Days late, and during the "Friday News Dump", New York Times FINALLY reports on Cynthia McKinney

Jul 03 08:01

Another Example of U.S. Censorship of Mainstream Media

It appears that the U.S. Mainstream media is going to ignore this story even though Cynthia McKinney was once a Congresswoman from Georgia and a Presidential candidate. How odd. What does this say about the news we receive daily from the mainstream media. The New York Times Boasts "All the News that’s fit to Print". Apparently this act of piracy and cowardly behavior isn’t fit to print. I condemn the New York Times for failing to print this news that they are fully aware of.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Actually, the NY Times finally ran a small story about the incident, but hardly treated it as the headline news it deserves to be, and in any event in days late in reporting the story at all.

Helen Thomas: Not Even Nixon Tried to Control the Media Like Obama

Following a testy exchange during Wednesday’s briefing with White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, veteran White House correspondent Helen Thomas told CNSNews.com that not even Richard Nixon tried to control the press the way President Obama is trying to control the press.

“Nixon didn’t try to do that,” Thomas said. “They couldn’t control (the media). They didn’t try.

“What the hell do they think we are, puppets?” Thomas said. “They’re supposed to stay out of our business. They are our public servants. We pay them.”

Washington Post cancels lobbyist event amid uproar

Washington Post publisher Katharine Weymouth said today she was canceling plans for an exclusive "salon" at her home where for as much as $250,000, the Post offered lobbyists and association executives off-the-record access to "those powerful few" — Obama administration officials, members of Congress, and even the paper’s own reporters and editors.

The astonishing offer was detailed in a flier circulated Wednesday to a health care lobbyist, who provided it to a reporter because the lobbyist said he felt it was a conflict for the paper to charge for access to, as the flier says, its “health care reporting and editorial staff."

That didn’t take long.

The FEMA Blogger Camps are not a Wi-Fi Zone.

Let’s see now… The Israelis invade Gaza and murder 1500 people in cold blood using banned weapons and destroying the infrastructure so that the people are now living in the rubble and… Obama says nothing. Cynthia McKinney along with a Nobel Peace Prize winner and 20 or so other people get kidnapped on the high seas, while trying to deliver aid to these people and this same psychopathic, thug nation or… should I call it a repug-nation? Well… this same murderous collection of international criminals hijacks their boat and arrests them and… Obama says nothing.

The Fifth Reason the MSM Sucks

That may be one reason that the mainstream news commentators hate bloggers so much. The more people who get their news from blogs instead of mainstream news sources, the smaller their audience, and the less the MSM can charge for the kind of "nonconfrontational access" which leads to puff pieces for the big boys.

Helen Thomas hits White House for lack of transparency

At the White House presser on Wednesday, several correspondents questioned the way the Oval Office selected questions from the public for today’s virtual town hall.

President Barack Obama answered pre-selected questions Wednesday afternoon about health care sent in from emails, Facebook and Twitter. CBS’ Chip Reid and columnist Helen Thomas thought this reflected a lack of transparency at the White House.

“It feels like the concept of a town hall, I think, is to have an open public forum. And this sounds like a very tightly controlled audience and list of questions. Why do it that way?” asked Reid.

THE PRESS CONFERENCE THAT NO ONE ATTENDED…..

If it’s about Israel…. the media is not interested.
If it condemns Israel…. the media is definitely not interested.

Yesterday afternoon, NYC Council Member Charles Barron called a Press Conference to discuss ‘zionist piracy on the high seas’. Not a single member of the Corporate Media attended the conference… in fact, the only people representing the ‘media’ at all in attendance were our roving photographer Bud and his sidekick Chippy Dee. Again, the power of the Blogesphere proves its strength.

On this note…. Chippy Dee had the following observation:

Interestingly, if you Google the event there is loads of info on the blogs but nothing in the press. We’d be in total ignorance without bloggers. No wonder they’re trying so hard to get rid of this thorn in their side.
