SICK AUSTRALIAN MURDOCH JOURNO EXPLOITS BUSHFIRE TRAGEDY TO PUSH ISLAMOPHOBIC PROPAGANDA.

The recent disastrous bushfire in Australia, which have killed some 180 people and destroyed nearly 800 homes, has been callously and cynically used by ‘Sydney Daily Telegraph’ senior journalist and right-wing blogger at that paper, Piers Akerman, to push his extreme anti-Islam hate mongering by claiming that Islamists may have deliberately lit the fires as a terrorist act.

New Bailout May Top $1.5 Trillion

In announcing the plan, Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner will not ask Congress for more funds than the roughly $350 billion that remain in the Treasury Department's original rescue package for the financial system, though congressional sources said such a request could come later if the new programs are unsuccessful. The rest of the money would come from other government agencies, such as the Federal Reserve, as well as private-sector contributions.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The federal Reserve is NOT a government agency. It is a private company, no more "Federal" than "Federal Express."

Drop a note to the Washington POst and remind them of that.

Jewish Community of Venezuela Fears for Their Safety

Webmaster's Commentary:

"FEEL SORRY FOR US! FEEL SORRY FOR US! FORGET ABOUT GAZA!!!!"

Okay. Here is the part FOX isn't telling you. All this "Anti-Semitism" in Venezuela was kicked off by the attack on the synagogue where a bunch of guys ran through and spray-painted the walls. This was headline news around the world (while the six totally destroyed Mosques in Gaza did not rate a mention on ABCNNBBCBS). Yesterday, the Venezuelan police arrested the vandals, who turned out to be other police officers AND THE SECURITY GUARD FOR THE SYNAGOGUE ITSELF!

Reporters Without Borders and Washington's Coups

British press baron Lord Northcliff said, "News is something that someone, somewhere wants to keep secret, everything else is advertising." If this is true, then U.S. government funding of Reporters Without Borders must be news, because the organization and its friends in Washington have gone to extraordinary lengths to cover it up. In spite of 14 months of stonewalling by the National Endowment for Democracy over a Freedom of Information Act request and a flat denial from RSF executive director Lucie Morillon, the NED has revealed that Reporters Without Borders received grants over at least three years from the International Republican Institute.

Webmaster's Commentary:

For the record, WhatReallyHappened has received no grants whatsoever to operate. We survive on private donations and advertisers.

Dems May Hold Talk Radio “Accountability” Hearings

Democrat senator Debbie Stabenow has told nationally syndicated talk host Bill Press she will push for talk radio “accountability hearings” in order to impose government-mandated “balance” in the radio marketplace. According to the Gladwin, Michigan, senator the airwaves are “dominated by one view” that “overwhelms people’s opinions — and, unfortunately, incorrectly,” and said that “right-wing conservative talk hosts” are “trying to make people angry and saying all kinds of things that aren’t true and so on,” Radio Ink reports on February 5.

Robert Fisk: War reporters used to prefer morality over impartiality

It's not just the power of the writing I'm talking about here; the screaming soldiers, the dying Communard, the condemned men, the woman wanting to sell her car, the death of an age, the flowers. These reporters were spurred, weren't they, by the immorality of war. They cared. They were not frightened of damaging their "impartiality". I wonder if we still write like this.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This is a continuation of the "Dr. Death" story started by BBC a few days ago. Here we have a guy given a catchy name, whose crimes (whatever they were) occurred in the first half of the last century, and who died 17 years ago Yet right now, with the economy melting down (and at a time when Israel openly admits a campaign to improve their post-Gaza public image) the AP decides that WAG THE NAZI is an important story to shove at you.

We get it, already. The Nazis were jerks. It's time to move on! We have monsters today we should be dealing with.

Why is America Attacking Islam?

Attacking Islam, Revisited
An Update of a Published Article On March 21, 1994

One intelligent question we are asked over and over again and must be answered: ?Why is America warring against one Islamic country after another? Is it because Arabs are sub-human, as Israelis claim, or are Muslims terrorists as the American press subtly suggests; or, is it an anti-Islamic agenda among our nation?s leaders that they do not share with us?

Turn off the Canadian media, please

People in a country like Canada use their own media - public (CBC) and private (CanWest, TorStar, CTVglobemedia) - to know what is happening in their own country. Media are also an important part of forging a national identity. They are supposed to represent the broad spectrum of Canadian opinion. When they present information on the rest of the world, they do so from a Canadian perspective and have the Canadian audience in mind.

And today, if you want to have the first idea what is happening in Israel/Palestine (or most of the rest of the world), the best thing to do would be to turn them off completely.

BBC abandons 'impartiality' on warming

In terms of journalistic professionalism, the sad thing about all this is that the debate about global warming has now entered a fascinating new stage. Honest coverage of all the new information coming to light would be vastly more interesting to the BBC's audience than the vapid propaganda which is all they get.

But inevitably this also exposes the hollowness of all those claims that the BBC still has a duty to remain "impartial", which on this issue is belied by own guidelines. As a particularly glaring example of how the BBC has, on so many issues, abandoned any pretence of impartiality, this can only provide more ammunition to those who argue that it no longer deserves that compulsory licence fee.

BBC suspends Gaza appeal investigation after legal threat

A special committee set up by the BBC Trust was due to report next week on the corporation's decision not to broadcast an appeal by the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), which prompted more than 15,000 complaints.

However, the process was halted when the BBC received a letter from a firm of solicitors threatening to take the corporation to judicial review if it does not screen the appeal.

The letter, from London law firm Hickman & Rose, was sent on behalf of two Gaza residents and one British citizen. It is understood to claim that the BBC's actions were "irrational or unlawful" and breached the European Convention of Human Rights.

New York Times finally Beats BBC News

New York Times Index | Mon- Jan 26, 2008 | Don Robertson reporting from a chilly Northern Maine

The BBC has recently come under attack for its overly politicized and propagandist presentation of the news. Those kinky Existentialist Europeans make for some pretty sorry reading sometimes.

Tribune Co. Going Bankrupt

Tribune Co. may be filing for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy next week, as advertising revenues tumbled. The company has $1.5 billion due in interest payments on debt due over the next 8 months and won’t have the cash to make good. Tribune has hired Lazard to prepare the bankruptcy filings.

The print news industry has been in steady decline for several years thanks to the 1-2 punch given by Craigslist.org, which killed their classified ad revenue, and the contraction of the economy that weighed heavy on ad revenues.

Are we witnessing the end of an era? One can hope.

In the spring of 2007 a tiny military contractor with a slender track record went shopping for a precious Beltway commodity.
The company, Defense Solutions, sought the services of a retired general with national stature, someone who could open doors at the highest levels of government and help it win a huge prize: the right to supply Iraq with thousands of armored vehicles.
