Facebook turns to Twitter to explain outages

Facebook, the world's largest social network, relied on Twitter on Wednesday to explain that its apps were experiencing outages around the world.

Some users of Facebook (FB) and other platforms owned by the tech giant, including Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp, experienced problems accessing the services. Many people went on Twitter to vent their frustration.
The outages began Wednesday afternoon and appeared to affect people in multiple areas, including the US, Central and South America, and Europe, according to tweets and the outage-tracking site DownDetector.com.

US Media Erase Years of Chavismo’s Social Gains. Poverty Was Curtailed

Venezuela’s Bolivarian Revolution, which took off with the election of President Hugo Chávez in December 1998, frequently and even quite recently received praise for its social gains from the United Nations, international humanitarian organizations and economists. This aspect of the country’s story has been almost entirely written out of media coverage of the effort to overthrow the Venezuelan government by the US, Canada and their right-wing partners in Venezuela and the region.

Under Chávez, poverty in Venezuela was cut by more than a third, and extreme poverty by 57 percent (CEPR, 3/7/13). (These declines were even steeper if measured from the depths of the opposition-led oil strike, designed to force Chávez out by wrecking the economy.)

Webmaster's Commentary:

Would that most Americans knew, and understood, their history as well as the citizens of Venezuela understand their own history and heritage.

Why are Palestinian voices often marginalized?

Progressive activists in North America have been inundated for weeks now with analysis and commentary about what happened to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar. The cracks that opened up in the seemingly impenetrable wall of the pro-Israel lobby are indeed a good thing; now, the opportunity should be taken to highlight why Zionism constitutes a supremacist ideology. But one voice that consistently seems to be missing from most of this debate is the voice of Zionism’s primary victims, the Palestinians. Once again, the Palestinian narrative is marginalized and not considered pivotal to the “issues of the day”. Now is the time to challenge one of the basic thrusts of the Zionist lobby, which has always been to block out Palestinian voices and accordingly nullify their humanity.

YOUTUBE CHANGES SEARCH ALGORITHM TO SUPPRESS CRITICISM OF BRIE LARSON AND CAPTAIN MARVEL

If you searched “Brie Larson” on YouTube a couple of days ago, the top search results were calls for a boycott of Captain Marvel, and angry rants about Larson’s involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With one small change, YouTube made all of that disappear.

This week, YouTube recategorized “Brie Larson” as a news-worthy search term. That does one very important job: it makes the search algorithm surface videos from authoritative sources on a subject. Instead of videos from individual creators, YouTube responds with videos from Entertainment Tonight, ABC, CBS, CNN, and other news outlets first.

The miserable, squalid campaign to stifle Tucker Carlson

Tucker Carlson Tonight is the best show on American news television. It is not, as his tedious enemies insist, Trump propaganda. Quite the opposite: it is a rare bright spot of originality in an otherwise arid media landscape.

Every night, almost without fail, Carlson introduces his 3.2 million viewers to an interesting thought or a different way of looking at the world. TV news is repetitive; that is its nature. But Carlson’s show manages to cover the talking points in a different key. He also introduces new opinions and ideas into the media bloodstream.

ALERT – BIGGEST CENSORSHIP CAMPAIGN EVER

Google, Amazon, Facebook have all lined up overnight to block all information about the dangers of vaccinations.

It was clearly planned out in advance and then choreographed to coincide with a recent Congressional hearing.

Google has changed search results, Amazon has removed books and videos from its store, and Facebook has erased long standing parent groups, not only about the dangers of vaccines, but also how to treat children who who have been severely injured by them.

Facebook Reverses Zero Hedge Ban, Says It Made A "Mistake"

It has been a strange 24 hours.

On Monday, we first learned that for the previous two days, Facebook had banned all Zero Hedge content across its various mediums, as it went against Facebook's "Community Standards" (which to the best of our knowledge, neither we not anyone else has any idea what they are), a decision which - as we noted yesterday - surprised us for two reasons: not only do we not have an official Facebook account, but Facebook did not approach us even once with a warning or even notification.

Movie Review Of ‘Bobby Fischer Against The World’: Was The Documentary Designed To Discredit The Opinions Of A Chess Genius & National Hero?

As discussed in ‘Reclaiming An American Hero: Bobby Fischer The Fearless Genius’, Bobby Fischer was widely criticized for his controversial statements outside of chess. For example, Dick and Jeremy Schaap questioned Fischer’s sanity, while Charles Krauthammer wrote that “he’s clearly a sick man.”[34] However, it would be more accurate to state that Fischer used his prodigious intellect to read widely and deeply to discover many of the lies that pervade our society. His exposure of the Holocaust hoax is especially praiseworthy. Bobby Fischer was truly an authentic American hero.

US WARNS GERMANY IT WILL END INTELLIGENCE SHARING IF HUAWEI IS GIVEN 5G CONTRACT

SOURCE: INTEL NEWS
The United States has warned Germany that intelligence sharing between the two countries will be threatened if the Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei is awarded a contract to build Germany’s 5G network. The company, Huawei Technologies, is a private Chinese venture and one of the world’s leading telecommunications hardware manufacturers. In recent years, however, it has come under scrutiny by some Western intelligence agencies, who view it as being too close to the Communist Party of China. More recently, Washington has intensified an international campaign to limit Huawei’s ability to build the infrastructure for 5G, the world’s next-generation wireless network. Along with Britain, Australia and Canada, the US is concerned that the Chinese telecommunications giant may facilitate global wiretapping on behalf of Beijing’s spy agencies.

Webmaster's Commentary:

President Trump is just angry that Huawei got Germany's 5 G contract, and these actions are not the actions of a mature leadership. This is a 3 year old saying angrily, "I'm taking my toys, and going home!!"

This isn't about Chinese wiretapping; this is about no US company getting the money for the contract, because, yet again, in terms of invention and innovation, the US finds itself behind the proverbial 8 Ball.

Geologist Accuses Apple of Political Bias in Removing App Countering Climate Alarmism

Political figures who support the so-called Green New Deal and other proposals to restrict carbon dioxide emissions are up against some “inconvenient facts” that Americans may access immediately through a smartphone application, a geologist and author says.

Why is that?

Google will ‘de-rank’ RT articles to make them harder to find – Eric Schmidt

Google agreed to pay two top executives $135 MILLION total in severance packages after they were both accused of sexual misconduct

Google agreed to pay two of its top executives $135million in severance packages after they were both accused of sexual misconduct, a new lawsuit has claimed.

Amit Singhal was offered $45million by Alphabet, Google's parent firm, after he was accused of groping a colleague at a 'boozy off-site event' with the company.

Details of the exit package were revealed as part of a shareholder lawsuit against the company, one that followed a published report of payouts Google made to executives accused of sexual misconduct.

Previously redacted portions of the lawsuit were made available Monday, including quotes from Alphabet board committee meetings.

They come just months after thousands of Google employees staged a global walk-out after it was revealed Android creator Andy Rubin received a $90million severance package after a woman accused him of forcing her into oral sex.

YOU WON'T BELIEVE WHAT FACEBOOK HAS BANNED NOW...

If this sort of extreme censorship continues, pretty soon anybody that has anything even remotely important or interesting to say will be completely banned by Facebook. As you will see below, Facebook has just banned Zero Hedge, and they have also just announced that they will be systematically censoring any content that has “misinformation” about vaccines. Of course this is just the latest chapter in a relentless campaign by the social media giants to censor alternative sources of information. Since Donald Trump’s victory in November 2016, the social media crackdown has just gotten worse and worse, and it has gotten to the point where we can now safely say that free speech is dead on the major social media platforms.

Webmaster's Commentary:

That unholy triumverate of Facebook, Twitter, and Google have, by their collective actions, demonstrated that they are now the 4th Arm of the American government, the horrific dark surveillance arm, which now joins The Legislative, Judicial, and the executive branches in their ugly march to the "unity mombo", and to try to assure us astounded Americans that all is right with whatever this government does or says.

Apparently, to the heads of these countries, consider the classic novel "1984" not a cautionary tale, but a "how-to manual".

I am reminded of what happened shortly before Hitler rose to power, and started World War II. He took over all communications in order to make the German people believe that everything he was doing was just and right. Propaganda in Nazi Germany

And we are so very close to the precipice of another world conflict, that I can almost taste it.

Report: Israelis incite against Palestinians every 66 seconds

Israeli incitement against Palestinians on social media is on the increase, a report by Campaign – The Arab Centre for Developing Social Media issued yesterday has found.

According to Quds Press, Campaign said Israelis publish one inciting post against Palestinians every 66 seconds in 2018, compared to one post every 71 seconds in 2017.

The number of posts increased when the Knesset was discussing and voting on the new Nation-State Law which saw Israel become a nation-state for Jews only and demoted Arabic from a state language to a “language of merit”.

In 2018, the report said, Israelis published 474,250 posts which incited against Palestinians on social media; an increase from the 445,000 posts in 2017.

American Pravda: Amazon Book Censorship

As most are surely aware, the last year or two has seen a growing crackdown on free speech and free thought across the Internet, with our constitutionally-protected First Amendment rights being circumvented through the agency of monopolistic private sector corporations such as Facebook, Twitter, and Google. Although as yet our government has not gained the power to ban discordant views nor punish their advocates, anonymous tech company censors regularly take these steps, seemingly based upon entirely opaque and arbitrary standards which lack any power of appeal. No one really knows why some individuals are banned or “de-platformed” and others are not, and surely this looming uncertainty has imposed self-censorship upon hundreds of individuals for every publicized victim who receives an exemplary punishment.

Mar 12 08:50

Will the Censors Win?

The Internet is seen as a savior that will take over the function of honest reporting and free speech now that the print and TV media and NPR serve as the Ministry of Propaganda. This is true only if people migrate from Google, Facebook, Twitter, and so forth, to the alternatives that do not block content at odds with official explanations.

Unfortunately, people tend to be stuck in their ways. They are accustomed to Google, Facebook, and Twitter, don’t know of the alternatives, and if they did, are disinclined to spend their time to set up differently.

Liberal America created a society that is heavily into denunciation, a primary function of social media. Even icons of the left are denounced when they fall behind the pace of hatred set by Identity Politics.

What does the high school student suing CNN for $250m actually hope to achieve?

Young Nick Sandmann is reportedly to sue CNN for a whacking $250m over its coverage of his encounter with an indigenous American man. Rather than drawing a line under the affair, it is likely to further polarise opinion.

The incident which has led us here happened in January. Sandmann and his schoolmates from Covington Catholic High School were in Washington for a pro-life march, "Make America Great Again" hats proudly atop their heads. By coincidence, the Indigenous People’s March was taking place at the same time and at some stage Sandmann came face to face with a Native American, Nathan Philips – the two seemingly at diametrically opposed ends of America’s social and cultural spectrum.

Facebook performs U-turn after removing Sen. Elizabeth Warren's ads calling for break up of social media giant and Amazon and Google because they have 'bulldozed the competition and used private information for profit'

Facebook has performed a U-turn after removing Sen. Elizabeth Warren's ads calling for the break up of the social media giant and Amazon and Google.

Warren, who launched the ads as part of her presidential campaign, claimed that the three tech companies had 'bulldozed the competition' and 'used private information for profit'.

In one of the removed videos, Warren said: 'We all use them. But in their rise to power, they've bulldozed the competition, used our private information for profit, and tilted the playing field in their favor.'

The ad went on to talk about Facebook's merger with potential competitor WhatsApp, as well as claiming that Google selectively promotes its own products over competitors.

Jigsaw Chrome Extension Tunes Out Internet Toxicity

What if you could turn a dial and tune out an abusive tweet in your Twitter mentions or an insulting comment on Facebook?

Today, Google's sister company Jigsaw released an experimental Chrome browser extension called Tune, which lets users control how much "toxicity" they want to see in comments across the internet. Tune is built on Perspective, Jigsaw's API that trains machine learning (ML) models to identify and score comments that could be perceived as abusive or harassment.

At launch, the browser extension works across social media sites including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Reddit, and comment platform Disqus. It acts as a knob that lets users set the "volume" of conversations. Turn it up to see everything, or turn it down all the way to "zen mode" to replace toxic comments with small colored dots.

Decline in readers, ads leads hundreds of newspapers to fold

Last September, Waynesville became a statistic. With the shutdown of its newspaper, the Daily Guide, this town of 5,200 people in central Missouri’s Ozark hills joined more than 1,400 other cities and towns across the U.S. to lose a newspaper over the past 15 years, according to an Associated Press analysis of data compiled by the University of North Carolina.

Blame revenue siphoned by online competition, cost-cutting ownership, a death spiral in quality, sheer disinterest among readers or reasons peculiar to given locales for that development. While national outlets worry about a president who calls the press an enemy of the people, many Americans no longer have someone watching the city council for them, chronicling the soccer exploits of their children or reporting on the kindly neighbor who died of cancer.

Thousands of Russians protest against internet restrictions

Lawmakers last month backed tighter internet controls contained in legislation they say is necessary to prevent foreign meddling in Russia’s affairs. But some Russian media likened it to an online “iron curtain” and critics say it can be used to stifle dissent.

People gathered in a cordoned off Prospekt Sakharova street in Moscow, made speeches on a stage and chanted slogans such as “hands off the internet” and “no to isolation, stop breaking the Russian internet”.

The rally gathered around 15,300 people, according to White Counter, an NGO that counts participants at rallies. Moscow police put the numbers at 6,500.

“If we do nothing it will get worse. The authorities will keep following their own way and the point of no return will be passed”, said 28-year-old protester Dmitry, who declined to give his full name.

Robo-journalists that write up 'monotonous' articles from election to sports results are becoming more popular in newsrooms - but will they ever replace traditional reporters?

Tobi is being also being used by a number of other national publications worldwide and similarly automated generators are helping news wires services to report data-driven news.

The programmes are not only faster', they are also 'multilingual' - Tobi wrote in both French and German.

Amazon’s modern day ‘book burning’ campaign against conservative authors

In the last few weeks, Amazon crossed a dangerous and precarious line and began a modern day book burning campaign against titles written by authors from the populist right which have been arbitrarily deemed ‘politically dangerous’.

More Power to You Miss Omar

Saying anything negative about Israel has long been the third rail of US politics and media. Israel is our nation’s most sacred cow. Any questioning of its behavior brings furious charges of anti-Semitism and professional oblivion.

I keep in my bookcase a cautionary book, ‘They Dared Speak Out’ written by US senators and congressmen who all lost their positions after rebuking Israel for its mistreatment of Palestinians or daring to suggest that Israel had far too much influence in the US.

Journalists learn this first commandment very early. Criticize, or even question, Israel at your own peril. Until recently, we journalists were not even allowed to write there was an ‘Israel lobby.’ It was widely considered Washington’s most powerful lobby group but, until lately, mentioning its name was seriously verboten.

After Corporate Media Spent 1/3 of 2019 Promoting Multiple Hate Crime Hoaxes, They Are Entirely Silent When Black Transgender Attacks 11 Whites in New York

For roughly 32 days in 2019 – courtesy of the corporate media hyping the Jazmine Barnes shooting in Houston, Covington Catholic boys in Washington D.C., and the Jussie Smollet MAGA incident in Chicago – the specter of pervasive white racism has haunted individual non-whites and, collectively all non-whites across the nation.

All of these incidents enabled the corporate media to attack white America without remorse and with a vengeance once reserved for propaganda pieces directed at Imperial Japan or Nazi Germany in World War II.

When the narratives the corporate media utilized to promote these anti-white propaganda stories collapsed, the damage had already been done: non-whites had their prejudices confirmed that white America was engaging in hate crimes against fellow non-whites.

Truth be damned.

$250M Lawsuit Against CNN Imminent; Covington High MAGA Student Suffered "Vicious" And "Direct Attacks"

CNN is about to be sued for more than $250 million for spreading fake news about 16-year-old Covington High School student Nicholas Sandmann.

Sandmann was viciously attacked by left-leaning news outlets over a deceptively edited video clip from the January March for Life rally at the Lincoln Memorial, in which the MAGA-hat-wearing teenager appeared to be mocking a Native American man beating a drum. Around a day later, a longer version of the video revealed that Sandmann did absolutely nothing wrong - after the media had played judge, jury and executioner of Sandmann's reputation.

CNN will be the second MSM outlet sued over their reporting of the incident, after Sandmann launched a $250 million lawsuit against the Washington Post in late February.

The Fake News Nazi - Corbyn, Williamson And The Anti-Semitism Scandal

One of us had a discussion with an elderly relative:

'He can't be allowed to become Prime Minister.'

'Why not?'

'It's so awful...'

'What is?'

'The way he hates the Jews.'

The last comment was spoken with real anguish, the result of continuous exposure to just two main news sources: the Daily Mail and the BBC.

What is astonishing is that, just four years ago, essentially no-one held this view of Jeremy Corbyn.

Corbyn first became an MP in 1983. He stood for the Labour leadership 32 years later, in May 2015. We searched the ProQuest database for UK newspaper articles containing:

'Jeremy Corbyn' and 'anti-semitism' before 1 May 2015 = 18 hits

'Jeremy Corbyn' and 'anti-semitism' after 1 May 2015 = 11,251 hits

None of the 18 hits accused Corbyn of anti-semitism. For his first 32 years as an MP, it just wasn't a theme associated with him.

Debunking the myth of Labour’s ‘anti-Semitism crisis’

Pro-Israel groups aided by the mainstream media have led the assault on the Labour Party over its handling of allegations of anti-Semitism. Their goal, it seems, is no less than the removal of Jeremy Corbyn as leader with the unfounded claim that he is partly responsible for the surge in anti-Semitism amongst Labour members, which we are told has now reached epidemic proportions.

The allegations have prompted a powerful response from academics and activists, including Jews. Peter Beinart, for example, penned a long essay shattering the myth that anti-Zionism is anti-Semitism. While the article by the Jewish American author was originally published in the Forward magazine, even the Guardian – believed by many to be fuelling the crisis — uploaded it onto its website’s long read section. So far, it has had 21,000 shares; I recommend the piece because of its nuanced dissection of the arguments around the anti-Semitism allegations.

Jeremy Corbyn and the truth about Tom Bower's book

Those of us who report on politics are at liberty to express, within limits, whatever opinions we like. These limits include an obligation to observe standards. We should strive to be accurate. We can make strong arguments but ought not to distort the truth or suppress relevant information to make our point.

Writer Tom Bower fails catastrophically to meet these standards. It is not only that Dangerous Hero: Corbyn's Ruthless Plot For Power, his new book on Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, contains numerous falsehoods. It systematically omits relevant facts in order to portray Corbyn as a ruthless Marxist and anti-semite hell-bent on destroying Western liberal values.

The Age of Tyrannical Surveillance: We’re Being Branded, Bought and Sold for Our Data

Uncle Sam wants you.

Correction: Big Brother wants you.

To be technically accurate, Big Brother—aided and abetted by his corporate partners in crime—wants your data.

That’s what we have been reduced to in the eyes of the government and Corporate America: data bits and economic units to be bought, bartered and sold to the highest bidder.

Those highest bidders include America’s political class and the politicians aspiring to get elected or re-elected. As the Los Angeles Times reports, “If you have been to a political rally, a town hall, or just fit a demographic a campaign is after, chances are good your movements are being tracked with unnerving accuracy by data vendors on the payroll of campaigns.”

Your phones, televisions and digital devices are selling you out to politicians who want your vote.

Zuckerberg suppresses my viral article “Ilhan Omar’s Tropes Are True”

My Ilhan Omar article (at Unz) had hundreds of FB likes yesterday—then they suddenly disappeared. One Zuck dislike wipes out a million likes. Looks like I got Zucked!

Now why would a guy like Zuckerberg want to cover up Jewish-Zionist wealth and power?

So please, “like” this story on Facebook! Oh, wait a minute, I forgot. Facebook has banned VT urls. Try posting one and see what happens!

Disney CEO Says Joy Behar and Jimmy Kimmel ‘Blackface’ Controversies Are a ‘Private Matter’

Disney CEO Bob Iger believes that dealing with an employee who’s worn blackface is a private matter.

Pressed about recent controversies surrounding television hosts Jimmy Kimmel and Joy Behar — who on separate occasions both donned a form of blackface in their pasts — Iger reportedly dismissed the issues as a “private matter” to shareholders.

“This particular incident we choose to deal with as a private matter,” Iger said at a company meeting in St. Louis on Thursday, according to The New York Post.

A recording of Iger’s comments was released to YouTube.

“We don’t condone the use of blackface under any circumstance in our world today,” Iger said. “We dealt with the incidences privately. We did not feel it required any particular comment.”

Vladamir Putin: “The world's most popular leader”?

What American wouldn't prefer a leader who stuck up their national interests rather than the interests of global Capital? Has Putin repealed habeas corpus, due process and the presumption of innocence? Has Putin abducted innocent suspects from the streets of foreign capitals and taken them to black sites where they've been tortured, water-boarded and sometimes killed? Has Putin initiated war's of aggression on defenseless countries killing and maiming a million or so civilians on “a pack of lies”? Has Putin created 4 million refugees and a humanitarian crisis which is likely to erupt into a region-wide conflagration?

Facebook announces plan to 'tackle vaccine misinformation'

Amid growing calls from health experts to stem the tide of misinformation spread by anti-vaccination groups on social media, Facebook announced on Thursday that it would reduce the visibility of inaccurate posts and reject ads that include such content.

"We are working to tackle vaccine misinformation on Facebook by reducing its distribution and providing people with authoritative information on the topic," said a blog post by Monika Bickert, Facebook's vice-president of global policy management.

In recent years, groups trying to promote an anti-vaccine agenda have been able to spread their messages — largely uncensored — on Facebook, YouTube and other social media sites. Public health authorities believe these posts have frightened some parents into "vaccine hesitancy."

CNN’s Chris Cuomo Exploits Alex Trebek’s Cancer to Score Political Points Against Trump

CNN’s Chris Cuomo has been accused of politicizing Alex Trebek’s cancer diagnosis by the Media Research Center when he recently said the “Jeopardy!” host deserved credit for sticking to facts during a time of “rampant truth abuse in our politics.”

Politicizing Tragedy

In a YouTube video Wednesday, Trebek announced he has stage 4 pancreatic cancer. According to Fox News, “The ‘Cuomo Prime Time’ namesake then made ‘veiled references to President Trump’ and ‘used the news to promote CNN’s empty slogan’ when covering the news, according to MRC analyst Nicholas Fondacaro.”

“In a time that is all about what is keeping us apart, we got tough news today about someone who has always brought America together, literally for decades,” Cuomo said.

‘Steering’ conservatives & policymakers: Google explains CPAC sponsorship in leaked audio

Recordings of an internal meeting to address Google’s sponsorship of a prominent conservative conference appear to confirm accusations the tech giant is biased against Republicans and also seeks to “steer” US politics.
On Thursday, Breitbart published transcripts of the audio from a meeting held last year by Google’s senior director of US public policy, Adam Kovacevich, to address the anger of some employees over the company’s sponsorship of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in 2018.

Arguing that CPAC is the “premier gathering of sort of big-tent conservatives,” Kovacevich said that Google should be involved because “the majority of Googlers would want to steer conservatives and Republicans more towards a message of liberty and freedom and away from the more sort of nationalistic incendiary comments, nativist comments and things like that.”

'We were way too aggressive': Twitter CEO admits conservatives were targeted

Twitter co-founder and CEO Jack Dorsey addressed claims his social media platform had targeted conservatives, admitted they had likely acted too swiftly in banning some right-wing users, and failed to explain their reasons.

In conversation with podcast host Joe Rogan, Dorsey and his chief legal officer Vijaya Gadde fielded questions and criticisms regarding widespread accusations of the company catering to liberal viewpoints.

“Probably our team having a lack of context into actually what’s happening” Dorsey explained. “We would fully admit we probably were way too aggressive when we first saw this as well, and made mistakes.”

THE BUSH FAMILY STORIES YOU WON’T SEE TONIGHT ON CNN

CNN is certainly aggressive in questioning the myths fathered by President Donald Trump.

But how does it stack up in the truth-telling department when it comes to former presidents? To determine that, you can watch its new series, The Bush Years: Family, Duty, Power, to air tonight — and then come see a small selection of what we have unearthed.

We expect you will be startled by the contrast between the public, the private, and the very private lives of this family.

For an inkling into how hard-hitting the CNN series will be, here’s a recent headline from them:

George HW Bush’s former service dog Sully has a new job with the US Navy

Meanwhile, the US Senators from Texas would like all of us to have a $1 coin commemorating George H.W. and Barbara Bush jangling in our pockets. If their bill becomes law, it would be the first commemorative coin since Ronald Reagan.

Ok, enough fluff. Here’s the real deal:

Zuckerberg has given us no reason to believe him

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Wednesday made a major proclamation: The future of Facebook is one focused on private communication.

Zuckerberg’s new stance was delivered in a 3,000-word note titled “A Privacy-Focused Vision for Social Networking.” The note outlines the framework with which the company will integrate the private messaging features of its Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp apps, and it comes after a grueling 2018 in which the company was plagued by multiple scandals related to user privacy.

“I believe we should be working towards a world where people can speak privately and live freely knowing that their information will only be seen by who they want to see it and won’t all stick around forever,” Zuckerberg wrote.

It’s a nice vision, but if history is any indicator, there’s no reason to believe Zuckerberg.

New York Times lets Israel do its “fact checking”

The New York Times has told me it is perfectly content to accept the word of the Israeli government over the facts.

I had advised the newspaper of record that columnist Bret Stephens misrepresented the facts in his implicit rejoinder to Michelle Alexander’s incisive opinion piece calling to break the silence on Palestine.

Stephens wrote: “Nearly 1,300 Israeli civilians have been killed in Palestinian terrorist attacks in this century: That’s the proportional equivalent of about 16 September 11s in the United States.”

This is wrong.

Authoritarian Apple blocking all films that are critical of technology, just like Amazon bans all films critical of vaccines

Hollywood is on the verge of getting another original content producer, as tech giant Apple prepares to launch its own Netflix-like media streaming service. But reports indicate that, under the leadership of Tim Cook, Apple is planning to censor all content that’s critical of technology in much the same way that Amazon is now banning films and even books that are critical of vaccines.

Cook is reportedly highly involved in the process of choosing what streaming media content will be available through Apple, instructing those below him to shy away from all stories that depict “the negative consequences of technology.” He’s also made it clear that he wants to avoid “controversial” topics like religion, and stick primarily with “family-friendly” content of which he personally approves.

The Haaretz war on Jeremy Corbyn: scratch a Liberal Zionist and you find a chauvinist

For many people, Haaretz occupies much the same position as the Rand Daily Mail did in South Africa before it was driven out of business in 1985. It is the lone voice of liberalism in the world’s most racist far-right state.

Except that there is one important difference. Whereas the Rand Daily Mail opposed Apartheid, Haaretz is a supporter of Zionism. It’s editorial line is that Zionism and Israel can be humanised; that you can have a non-racist version of Zionism; that a Jewish state can indeed be a democratic state. It is the classic oxymoron.

In Israel, the political terms “left” and “right” take on a different meaning to that which is normally understood; they define one’s attitude to the Palestinian question. In normal, non-ethnically based states they define one’s position in respect of class and economic issues. The Israeli Labour Party (ILP) fails to meet the criteria of a left-wing party on both counts.

US-funded Cuban network fires staff for ‘anti-Semitic’ report on Soros

At least eight staff members of a US government-funded media company that broadcasts in Cuba have been fired for airing a segment that referred to George Soros as a “multimillionaire Jew” who was “the architect of the financial collapse of 2008.”

The three-part report on Radio and Television Marti, which broadcasts news to Cuba to promote American foreign policy interests, also called Soros a “left-wing billionaire of Hungarian-Jewish origin” and a “nonpracticing Jew of flexible morals” and raised far-right conspiracy theories about him.

FACEBOOK PRESSURED TO BLOCK VACCINATION RESISTERS

What’s the proper reaction to a minor localized outbreak of measles?

If you’re the State of Washington, you declare a State of Emergency.

If you’re the New York Times the Washington Post, or NPR you whip up NATIONAL hysteria.

If you’re Congress, you hold a hearing to attack the “Anti-Vax nuts.”

How about some basic logic and a little science?

If the vaccines are safe, why did Congress did to make the makers legally immune from product liability claims?

If the vaccines are effective, then why not let the people who believe in their safety and effectiveness get them and thereby protect themselves.

Anyone who believes vaccines will make them safe should have nothing to worry about, right?

Uh, not quite.

The Big Obstacle for Bernie Isn’t DNC “Rigging” -- It’s Media Trashing

Some people are attached to the idea that the Democratic National Committee will “rig” the presidential nomination against Bernie Sanders. The meme encourages the belief that the Bernie 2020 campaign is futile because of powerful corporate Democrats. But such fatalism should be discarded.

As Frederick Douglass said, “Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will.” Of course top Democratic Party officials don’t intend to give up control. It has to be taken from them. And the conditions for doing that are now more favorable than ever.

The effects of mobilized demands for change in the Democratic presidential nominating process have been major -- not out of the goodness of any power broker’s heart, but because progressives have organized effectively during the last two years.

Is Holocaust-themed game educational or exploiting tragedy for cash? (DEBATE)

An interactive game based on the Holocaust is raising eyebrows in Greece, prompting debate on whether historical tragedies are an appropriate subject for entertainment.

Taking on a topic as heavy as Schindler’s List isn’t just about entertainment, it also serves as a way to teach new generations about the events of the Holocaust, argues activist Brandon Straka.

Olivier Rafowicz, an adviser to the Jewish Community in France, on the other hand, suggests that monetizing the painful memories does more to degrade than preserve them. While films, books and even video-games have taken-up the touchy subject, RT panelists debate the shifting line between history and exploitation.

Truth-Tellers Are Being Censored

A large number of readers have complained that they do no longer receive the newsletter of paulcraigroberts.org. In absence of a logical explanation this is likely the result of Google censorship and shadow banning. Conspicuously, Paul Craig Roberts’ quarterly request for donations in December had the weakest response in the history of the website.

Governments have politicized truth and allocated large resources to imprison, censor, and shut down vocal critics while putting pressure on digital media moguls to expell critical information related to 9/11, the psychopharmaceutical complex, the military/security complex, the Israel lobby, Wall Street, the big banks and US imperialism and unilateralism. Facts have become persona non grata as “official explanations” are the new truth.
