Quebec dad sued by daughter after grounding loses his appeal

She had been living with her father after her parents split up when he grounded her in 2008 for defying his order to stay off the internet. The father caught her chatting on websites he had blocked, and alleged his daughter was posting "inappropriate pictures" of herself online.

Her punishment: she was banned from her Grade 6 graduation trip to Quebec City in June 2008, for which her mother had already granted permission.

The father — who had custody — withheld his written permission for the trip, prompting the school to refuse to let the girl go with her classmates.

That's when the girl asked for help from the lawyer who represented her in her parents' separation, and petitioned the court to intervene in her case.

Obama and the Reawakening of Corporatism

In 1970, General Motors was the largest and most profitable company in America. Today, of course, GM is neither. Instead, in 2009 America’s largest company is Wal-Mart, which was still only a regional, privately-held retailer in 1970. Wal-Mart’s rapid rise is not unique, however. Among the 100 largest firms today, a number—including FedEx, Microsoft, Cisco, and Home Depot--didn’t even exist in 1970. So profoundly has the landscape changed that 80 percent of the Fortune 100 companies today are different from 1970.

Protests in Moldova's capital against the ruling Communist Party's victory in Sunday's elections turned violent on Tuesday with 5,000 rioters taking control of the presidential residence and nearby parliament building. Some protesters called for the unification of Moldova with Romania.

Drug Decriminalization in Portugal

In 2001, Portugal began a remarkable policy experiment, decriminalizing all drugs, including cocaine and heroin. Some predicted disastrous results—that drug addiction rates would soar and the country would become a haven for "drug tourists." Now that several years have passed, policy experts can study the results. In a new paper for the Cato Institute, attorney and author Glenn Greenwald closely examines the Portugal experiment and concludes that the doomsayers were wrong. There is now a widespread consensus in Portugal that decriminalization has been a success.

‘Progressive’ Warmongers Liberals rally 'round Obama's war

As President Barack Obama launches a military effort that promises to dwarf the Bush administration’s Iraqi adventure in scope and intensity, the "progressive" community is rallying around their commander in chief as obediently and reflexively as the neocon-dominated GOP did when we invaded Iraq. As John Stauber points out over at the Center for Media and Democracy Web site, the takeover of the antiwar movement by the Obamaites is nearly complete. He cites MoveOn.org as a prime but not sole example:

Webmaster's Commentary:

Obama's approach has been calibrated to better "sell" the crap we've been getting from this administration for the monsters of war which control the political and military machines of this country.

The Two Faces of Barack Obama One for the masses, one for the power elite

The news from Europe, if you listen to our infatuated media, is that the Euros love President Obama: according to the American reportage, his recent trip there was a cavalcade of photo-ops, cheering crowds, and hugs from the queen of England. Anyone who has ever seen George Galloway in action knows why he had to be stopped at the border. He definitely poses a threat – although not the security one alleged by the Harper government.

Rather, Galloway, a five-times elected member of the British Parliament, poses a threat to Stephen Harper's ability to sell Canadians on our involvement in the Afghan war and on Ottawa's support for Israel in its battle against the Palestinians.

NATO backs US escalation of war in Central Asia

Even now what still unites the US and Europe is a common desire to face off any challenge from Russia and China to their global influence. Two new eastern European states joined NATO at Strasbourg: Albania and Croatia. The continued integration of former Warsaw pact countries into NATO has angered Russia, leading to sharp conflicts over US plans to establish its so-called Nuclear Missile Shield stationed in Poland and the Czech Republic and over NATO support for Georgia on the ongoing conflict over Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

Moscow, however, knows that it is under threat. During the G20 summit, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev warned of further NATO expansion eastwards.

House Preparing To Legalize Payday Loans With 391% APRs

A House subcommittee wants to legalize payday loans with interest rates of up to 391%. Lobbyists from the payday industry bought Congress' support by showering influential members, including Chairman Luiz Gutierrez, with campaign cash. The Congressman is now playing good cop, bad cop with the payday industry, which is pretending to oppose his generous gift of a bill.

Congressman Gutierrez is competing with Congressman Joe Baca to see who can author the biggest giveaway. Baca's legislation would allow rollovers, higher fees for online banks, and would pre-empt state laws banning payday loans.

Video sharpens focus on raid

Officer Jeffrey Cujdik told store owner Jose Duran that police were in search of tiny ziplock bags often used to package drugs. But, during the September 2007 raid, Cujdik and fellow squad members seemed much more interested in finding every video camera in the West Oak Lane store.

For the next several minutes, Tolstoy and other Narcotics Field Unit officers systematically cut wires to cameras until those "eyes" could no longer see.

Then, after the officers arrested Duran and took him to jail, nearly $10,000 in cash and cartons of Marlboros and Newports were missing from the locked, unattended store, Duran alleges. The officers guzzled sodas and scarfed down fresh turkey hoagies, Little Debbie fudge brownies and Cheez-Its, he said.

Is your Tea Party listed?

Webmaster's Commentary:

Remember, the US Government is stuck in a deep hole of debt. The US economy has stumbled, badly. Foreign investment and loans to the US Government are pledged on one and only one thing, YOU!

The security for all loans and investments in the United States is your lifetime of work. The US Government and corporations consider you chattel, to be bartered and traded, and when need be, sent to die in wars.

Demonstrated by the S&L crisis of the 1980s and in the current bailouts, the US Government promises that YOU will be forced to work your life away to make good any bad debts by the US Government and corporations.

When the American people stand up and say "We refuse to pay", foreign nations will no longer loan money to the US Government, and foreign investors will start searching for a safer home for their wealth.

There is no freedom without the freedom to say "no."

Join a Tea Party and send the world a single message; "NO!"

Darkness Renewed: Terror as a Tool of Empire

Here's a purely hypothetical scenario. Let's say you were a dedicated imperial militarist who believed that your country's security, prestige and financial interests could best be served by war and the ever-present threat of war. Let's say you had some really hot and juicy operations going on, endless deadly conflicts that were pouring hundreds of billions of dollars into your war machine and entrenching national policy even more deeply in the militarist philosophy – the machtpolitik – that you believe in.

But there's a problem. The general public – the cow-like herd out there that doesn't understand grand strategy the way you and your fellow elites do – is growing weary, and wary, of your Long War. The national treasury is bankrupt, the national infrastructure is rotting, the nation's communities are dying; millions of people are out of work, losing their homes, losing their dreams, spiraling down into want, privation and despair. Yet you have big plans to escalate the war, expand your war machine, and maintain the global dominance that you believe is the right and natural role for your special nation – and its elites. What to do? How to galvanize the truculent, self-absorbed herd into enthusiastically supporting your vital agenda once more?

The G20 Moves the World a Step Closer to a Global Currency

A single clause in Point 19 of the communiqué issued by the G20 leaders amounts to revolution in the global financial order.

"We have agreed to support a general SDR allocation which will inject $250bn (£170bn) into the world economy and increase global liquidity," it said. SDRs are Special Drawing Rights, a synthetic paper currency issued by the International Monetary Fund that has lain dormant for half a century.

In effect, the G20 leaders have activated the IMF's power to create money and begin global "quantitative easing". In doing so, they are putting a de facto world currency into play. It is outside the control of any sovereign body. Conspiracy theorists will love it.

The Associated Press - The Saturday morning argument between Margaret and Richard Poplawski [about the urinating dog] escalated to the point that she threatened to kick him out and called police to do it, according to a 12-page criminal complaint and affidavit filed late Saturday that contains her account.

[Binghamton] Gunman took the lives of others as his own fell apart

Police initially said it took 90 minutes to rescue her. On Saturday, Zikuski said it was actually 39 minutes, and he said the police response followed all proper procedures.

"The police did the right thing," he said.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Okay, so according to Police Chief Zikuski, waiting 45 minutes before entering the scene where a mass shooting is taking place is the "right thing" for police to do.

That only reinforces what I have been saying; The police cannot, will not, and do not arrive on the scene of a crime in time to prevent/thwart a crime. Anyone who relies on the police to save them is an idiot. Relying on the police to keep you safe is suicidal.

It is time for the pro-crime activists to realize that the very mass shootings they point to to prove the need for a gun ban in fact prove the exact opposite. Every year millions of Americans thwart crimes using legally owned firearms. Statistics prove time and again that where conceal carry is allowed, crime goes down.

Only months before the mass shooting at Virginia tech, there was another campus shooting incident. Only you probably didn't hear about it because a student with a legal firearm dropped the perp.

The fact is that if just one of those people in the civic center had been carrying a gun, Jiverly Wong would not have gotten very far. Indeed, had there simply been the awareness that some people walking the streets of Binghamton were carrying concealed weapons, it is quite possible Wong might not have even started his rampage.

The fact is that when you study these mass shootings, they all take place in locations where the shooters are reasonably confident that their targets will not be armed. And of course, that the police will not interfere for at least 45 minutes.

We now know the form with these events: British PM pays deferential homage to the American president, who repays the compliment with warm words for the special ties the US feels for Britain. The dynamic is usually clear: the Brit is grateful simply to be standing next to the most powerful man in the world. He is yapping spaniel; the American is top dog.

Wednesday's joint press conference of Gordon Brown and Barack Obama had no such dynamic at work:

Cornell University Expert on The "Scolding" The U.S.

"This might be one of the most eventful global economic summits since the breakdown of the original Bretton Woods system in the early 1970s. The Europeans and others are in no mood to take orders from the U.S. to print more money or incur more debt to "stimulate" their economies, for at least three reasons:

Top Down

What went wrong at AIG? Since the uproar over the firm's bonuses, it's become fashionable to distinguish between the masters of the universe at AIG Financial Products, the subsidiary that nearly torched the global economy, and the working stiffs at the rest of the company. So compelling is this dichotomy, in fact, that even the AIG basher-in-chief has invoked it. "You've got a company, AIG, which used to be just a regular old insurance company," President Obama explained during his recent "Tonight Show" appearance. "Then they decided--some smart person decided--let's put a hedge fund on top of the insurance company and let's sell these derivative products to banks all around the world."

Thefts From Luggage: Yup, Still Happening

I have not yet had anything stolen from my luggage, but this may just be a testament to the poor quality of my belongings. I have had my bag come off the conveyer belt unzipped and with the contents disarranged and spilling out. (The airline blamed it on the TSA, and nothing was missing, so I dropped it.)

Give Obama a Chance to Do What?

The populist anger across America is refreshing. People are angry and getting into it over issues that need to be deliberated over.

For all the problems America faces, its citizens do not have the time to give Obama a chance.

U-20: Will the Global Economy Resurface?

The Group of 20 (G20) is making a big show of getting together to come to grips with the global economic crisis. But here's the problem with the upcoming summit in London on April 2: It's all show. What the show masks is a very deep worry and fear among the global elite that it really doesn't know the direction in which the world economy is heading and the measures needed to stabilize it.

The latest statistics are exceeding even the gloomiest projections made earlier. Establishment analysts are beginning to mention the dreaded "D" word and there is a spreading sense that a tidal wave just now gathering momentum will simply overwhelm the trillions of dollars allocated for stimulus spending.

Quest for artificial nose to sniff out terrorists’ fear

LAW enforcement agencies are seeking scientists to develop an artificial nose that can detect the smell of fear as terrorists pass through security at airports.

The US Department of Homeland Security is advertising for specialists to devise airport scanners that will sniff out “deceptive individuals”.

The technology builds on recent breakthroughs in finding human scent-prints which, many researchers believe, may be as unique to individuals as fingerprints.

Commentary: War on drugs is insane

What do you suppose the total price tag is for this failed war on drugs? One senior Harvard economist estimates we spend $44 billion a year fighting the war on drugs. He says if they were legal, governments would realize about $33 billion a year in tax revenue. Net swing of $77 billion. Could we use that money today for something else? You bet your ass we could. Plus the cartels would be out of business. Instantly. Goodbye crime and violence.

If drugs were legalized, we could empty out a lot of our prison cells. People will use this stuff whether it's legal or not. Just like they do booze. And you could make the argument that in some cases alcohol is just as dangerous as some drugs.

The New Neocon Alliance with Obama

This morning leading neoconservatives such as William Kristol and Robert Kagan held a meeting at the Mayflower Hotel -- in support of President Obama's Afghanistan policy. Kristol and Kagan, as Foreign Policy's Laura Rozen has reported, have formed a successor organization to the Project for the New American Century, which came into disrepute for its advocacy of the Iraq War. The new one is called the Foreign Policy Initiative. Its contention is that America remains, in the words of Madeleine Albright, the "indispensable nation"and, furthermore, that neocons can play a valuable role in coming years in ensuring that it remains one.

At the Mayflower, the neocon pilgrims huddled around John McCain and other conservative stalwarts who spoke at the conference. But California congressman Jane Harman was also a speaker. It's clear that that neoconservatives are staking out a new course and want to retain an influential voice in foreign policy. Their latest strategy is to move closer to Obama. Kagan has already expressed his admiration for what he sees as Obama's determination to ensure that America remains No. 1 around the globe.

Drug violence pushes Mexico to top of U.S. security concerns

An epidemic of drug-related violence that has claimed thousands of lives in northern Mexico and begun to spill over into U.S. border cities has thrust Mexico into the first tier of President Barack Obama's security concerns.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Is it "drug violence" or are we looking at a civil war where the people of Mexico are trying to get rid of their country's drug corruption?

And if the Mexican people are trying to get rid of the drug criminals who have taken over their government, why is the US trying to prevent the Mexican people from getting guns?

I mean, the druggies already HAVE guns, so this claim that guns are being smuggled from the US into Mexico means the people are trying to arm themselves to drive the druggies out.

So, whose side is the US Government on?

The Quiet Coup

The crash has laid bare many unpleasant truths about the United States. One of the most alarming, says a former chief economist of the International Monetary Fund, is that the finance industry has effectively captured our government—a state of affairs that more typically describes emerging markets, and is at the center of many emerging-market crises. If the IMF’s staff could speak freely about the U.S., it would tell us what it tells all countries in this situation: recovery will fail unless we break the financial oligarchy that is blocking essential reform. And if we are to prevent a true depression, we’re running out of time.
