NEW YORK CITY INSTALLS 'ELECTRONIC EARS' IN MAJOR AREAS

Less than three months into 2015, 184 people have been shot in New York City. To combat this statistic, the city is looking toward a novel solution: gunfire detection systems. But the high cost of installing mics – and the potential for government eavesdropping – leave many wondering if it’s worth it. It’s called ShotSpotter, a large tracking system which detects gunfire and then triangulates the position of the sound. Acoustic sensors are placed in strategic areas, mostly along rooftops or atop telephone poles. Once installed, the sensors pick up street noise and listen for gunshots.

IMF BREAKS ITS OWN RULES WITH LOAN TO WAR-MONGERING UKRAINE

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has agreed on a scheme of war financing for Ukraine. For the first time, according to Fund sources, the IMF is not only violating its loan repayment conditions, but also the purposes and safeguards of the IMF’s original charter. IMF lending is barred for a member state in civil war or at war with another member state, or for military purposes, according to Article I of the Fund’s 1944-45 Articles of Agreement. This provides “confidence to members by making the general resources of the Fund temporarily available to them under adequate safeguards, thus providing them with opportunity to correct maladjustments in their balance of payments without resorting to measures destructive of national or international prosperity.”

FUKUSHIMA RADIATION FOUND IN SAMPLE OF GREEN TEA FROM JAPAN

Four years after the multiple explosions and melt-downs at Fukushima, it seems the scary stories have only just begun to surface. Given that Japan’s authoritarian regime of Shinzo Abe has cracked down on the information flow from Fukushima with a repressive state secrets act, we cannot know for certain what’s happening at the site.

Gallup: U.S. Population Highly Militaristic

In early 2014 there were unusual news stories about Gallup’s end-of-2013 polling because after polling in 65 countries with the question “Which country do you think is the greatest threat to peace in the world today?” the overwhelming winner had been the United States of America.

Had Gallup then conducted a poll on whether Gallup would ever ask that question again, I’m willing to bet large numbers would have said no. And thus far they would have been right. But Gallup managed to ask some other good questions, almost certainly by accident as well, in its end-of-2014 polling, revealing something else about the United States and militarism.

Curiously, Gallup’s end-of-2014 polling managed to ask a lot more questions — 32 instead of 6 and even squeezed in one on whether people wash their hands after using the bathroom — so the threat-to-peace question wasn’t dropped for lack of space.

France at war with alternative medias

They were thousands of people marching all over France for Freedom of Speech, chanting JE SUIS CHARLIE, after the killing of Charlie Hebdo cartoonists. No surprise there. Arguing in France is a national sport, the French just love to discuss the pros and cons of such and such ideas and to defend their point of view in discussions that can last forever. However, some had doubts about the political exploitation of such a massive rally. It looks like they were right.

First, there was a political and mediatic outcry against whoever considered to be an anti-Charlie. That led to a string of arrests on the vague charge of “defending terrorism”.

But that was just the beginning. What we are seeing now, is the start of a smear campaign to denounce all “conspirationists” who dare to disagree with the official policy of the French government.

It started when president Hollande has assimilated what he calls “conspiracy theories“ to Nazism and called to prevent their dissemination on the Internet and social networks.

Biodiversity or GMOs: Will The Future of Nutrition Be in Women's Hands or Under Corporate Control?

Women have been the primary growers of food and nutrition throughout history, but today, food is being taken out of our hands and substituted for toxic commodities controlled by global corporations. Monoculture industrial farming has taken the quality, taste and nutrition out of our food. As a result, India is facing a nutritional crisis: every fourth Indian goes hungry, and in 2011 alone, diabetes took the lives of 1 million Indians.

Now, the same companies who created the crisis are promising a miracle solution: GMOs (genetically modified organisms). Genetically engineered Golden Rice and GMO Bananas are being falsely promoted by corporations hiding behind the cloak of academia as a solution to hunger and malnutrition in the Global South. Indigenous biodiverse varieties of food grown by women provide far more nutrition than the commodities produced by industrial agriculture. Golden Rice is 350% less efficient in providing vitamin A than the biodiversity alternatives that women grow. GMO ‘iron-rich’ Bananas have 3 000% less iron than turmeric and 2 000 % less iron than amchur (mango powder). Apart from being nutritionally empty, GMOs are part of an industrial system of agriculture that is destroying the planet, depleting our water sources, increasing greenhouse gases, and driving farmers into debt and suicide through a greater dependence on chemical inputs. Moreover, these corporate-led industrial monocultures are destroying biodiversity, and we are losing access to the food systems that have sustained us for millennia. When we consider the number of patents involved in these initiatives, it becomes all too clear that the only beneficiaries of these supposedly ‘people-led’ ventures are large companies operating for profit, not for people.

Private Company Suspected of Dumping Biohazards Into Oklahoma River. Hundreds of used syringes and blood vials in biohazard containers ended up in the Arkansas River after a private company was hired to dispose of them, investigators said.

Police say naked man standing in doorway is not breaking law; neighbors are fed up

It was only January when Republicans took full control of Congress, but already it is safe to say they have no earthly idea of what they want to accomplish.
What we’re seeing is not just a bit of sputtering before the GOP machine cranks up and begins to systematically fulfill its governing plan. There is no plan. Republican majorities in both the House and Senate are so out of control that they’ve managed a feat once thought impossible: They make the Democratic Party look like a model of unity and discipline.

School Kicks Gifted 11-Yr-Old Student out for Having Marijuana... That Just Turned out to Be an Ordinary Leaf

These are the people in charge of public education and our criminal justice system, America.

People who will completely ruin a child, screw up his life, and overreact to the point that it makes soap operas look like CSPAN on a Tuesday and all because they can’t bother to tell the difference between a smoke-able illegal substance and a normal ass leaf.

I don’t even know what else to say. This is the dumbest story I have read all year, perhaps even more ignorant than that time the school suspended the kid for “making a terroristic threat” by declaring he was going to make another kid disappear with his magical one ring from The Hobbit movie.

I actually feel dumber for having read it, for it thus lodging into a crack somewhere in my grey brain matter and possibly staying there forever like the Three’s Company theme song.

Thanks a lot, Bedford County public schools for making me stupid, too.

Goats Fed GM Soybean Produce Abnormal Milk, Reduces Weight of Off-Spring

A new study finds that feeding goats the genetically modified (GM) glyphosate-tolerant soybean MON4-3-2 changes the composition of colostrum, the nutrient-rich first milk produced during pregnancy. Colostrum is ordinarily packed with proteins, vitamins as well as antibodies to protect the new-born against disease. Offspring from conventional and GM-fed mothers weigh the same at birth but those from GM-fed mothers weigh significantly less 30 days after birth. The researchers also discovered transgenic DNA in the milk of mothers fed the GM diet.

The work, published in Small Ruminant Research, led by Professor Lombardi at the University of Naples, Italy [1] should be seen in the light of recent discoveries of glyphosate herbicide in US mother’s breast milk at concentrations up to 1 600 times the legal limit allowed for single pesticides in EU drinking water [2]. The findings have important health implications, with the colostrum playing a well-known role in the short-term health and survival of both ruminant and human neonates. In addition to providing nutrients, antibodies present in colostrum are essential for the passive transfer of immunity to the offspring within the first 12-24 hours of life.......

Forget Dress Colors - Police Department Nitpicks Over Entitled Cop in Handicap Parking Spot

Completely missing the point, of course...

An able-bodied officer allegedly takes a handicap parking spot - which would be illegal to mere citizenry. Or did he? It's a turn of the screw... or for modern tastes it's - and I say this sarcastically - an issue of black and blue or white and gold. Whichever way the dress blows...

It might not seem like a big deal at all until you catch wind of the roots of the officer's attitude when a citizen points out that he's illegally parked in a handicap parking spot.

The Origin of the ‘New Cold War’

The ‘new Cold War,’ against Russia, is something of a misnomer, because it differs from the original version, against the U.S.S.R., in that it’s already a hot war, which started in Ukraine as being the key proxy-state for the American Government’s chief foreign-policy aim, of defeating Russia; and it’s a war that is very bloody, and widely lied-about in both the U.S. and Europe, but that is discussed in Russia as if it were somehow the result of mere errors by Western powers, when in fact all of the Western leaders knew from the get-go that this was intended to be a lynching of Russia by Uncle Sam, and when the EU have been going along with this aim because the U.S. aristocracy supposedly have the interests of European aristocrats in mind and not only their own: it’s ‘the Western Alliance,’ after all.

CIA WORKED WITH DOJ TO RE-PURPOSE FOREIGN SURVEILLANCE AIRBORNE CELL TOWER SPOOFERS FOR DOMESTIC USE

The CIA's recent rebranding as Valhalla for US cyberwarriors notwithstanding, the agency's general focus has been intelligence gathering on foreign governments, corporations and people. That it has often mistaken "torturing people into saying whatever they can to make it stop" for "intelligence gathering" isn't necessarily germane to the following discussion, but it's worth noting that the CIA is almost single-handedly responsible for destroying the term "extraordinary rendition" -- a formerly innocuous (and complimentary) term previously used to highlight something like, say, Johnny Cash's amazing cover of Soundgarden's' "Rusty Cage." (That Cash's two best covers are "Hurt" and "Rusty Cage" is not germane to the discussion of CIA torture programs, but what a coincidence!)

Merkel’s Uber-Hypocrisy to Japan over War Past… and Present

German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s reprimand last week to Japanese leaders to «face up to their wartime past» had an ironic twist that went scarcely noticed. The irony is that it is the German leader who actually stands accused of not facing up to her country’s wartime past. More sinisterly, her historical denial is manifested in actual present-day war-making in Ukraine, and it is furthering a dynamic that could lead to an all-out war with Russia because of baseless Western demonisation of Moscow. A demonisation that Merkel’s Germany is playing no small role in.

Did Ferguson PD Just Arrest the Wrong Guy?

When two officers with the Ferguson Police Department were shot last week, it was safe to assume that they would eventually get their man, even if it wasn’t really “their man.” For the most part, whenever the life of an authority figure is attempted in such a public way (especially if that attempt was successful), the police will always find someone to arrest. They have to.

They must always maintain the illusion that they have everything under control and that nobody can get away with such a crime. Nothing indicates a lack of control, quite like having a police officer ambushed and shot, so somebody has to pay no matter what.
