Harvard economist: Prohibition creates violence, legalize all drugs

"Violence is the norm in illicit gambling markets but not in legal ones. Violence is routine when prostitution is banned but not when it's permitted," he wrote. "Violence results from policies that create black markets, not from the characteristics of the good or activity in question.

"The only way to reduce violence, therefore, is to legalize drugs."

All These Many Alexanders

The Christian Science Monitor - Robert Marquand - 2,300 years later, 'Alexander-mania' grips Macedonia SKOPJE, Macedonia - As part of a stunning new homegrown ideology of history and identity based on Alexander the Great, this capital city's main square may soon boast a huge new statue of the ancient conqueror.

Alexander is considered one of the greatest military leaders of all time. Born in the Greek city of Pella in 356 BC, his conquests extended to most of his known world by the time of his death at age 32. He opened up Greek civilization from the Mediterranean to India, and is regarded as the first to link Europe, Asia, and Africa.

Nobel outrage at South Africa’s decision to ban the Dalai Lama

South Africa was plunged into a diplomatic row yesterday after the Government barred the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader, from entering the country to take part in a peace conference linked to the 2010 football World Cup.

The decision, confirmed to The Times by senior government officials, was met with outrage by his fellow Nobel peace laureates Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the former President F. W. de Klerk, who are organising the conference on March 27 with the Norwegian Nobel Peace Committee.

3 Oakland cops killed in 2 related incidents

Three Oakland police sergeants were shot and killed and a fourth officer was critically wounded Saturday in a pair of related incidents that together rank among the deadliest attacks on law enforcement in California history.

A fifth officer, a member of the SWAT team that killed the suspect police held responsible for the shootings, was treated for minor injuries and released.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I apologize, but given the actions of the police in recent months (as evidenced by stories further down this page today) I am having a very hard time sympathizing with their fate or condemning the shooter.

Given the sheer number of innocent people killed by the police either with tasers or kicking down the wrong doors, and other criminality wearing a badge, I fully understand how some people might feel like shooting back when attacked is their best option.

Treasury Plans to Offer Loans to Buy Bad Assets - Latest Geithner Flimflam - Government-backed 95% equity loans to banks to buy toxics assets from other banks at a steep discount.

The New York Times Edmund L. Andrews, Eric Dash and Graham Bowley

WASHINGTON — The Treasury Department is expected to unveil early next week its long-delayed plan to buy as much as $1 trillion in troubled mortgages and related assets from financial institutions, according to people close to the talks.

Industry analysts estimate that the nation’s banks are holding at least $2 trillion in troubled assets, mostly residential and commercial mortgages made at the height of the housing bubble.

Although the details of the F.D.I.C. part were still being finalized on Friday, it is expected the government would provide the overwhelming bulk of the money — possibly more than 95 percent — through loans or direct investments of taxpayer money.

The doors to two groups of cells didn't lock, but apparently no one tried to escape — perhaps because they had everything they needed inside.

Labour 'double standards' as smoking ban is lifted for G20 world leaders

Labour has been accused of double standards for amending legislation to allow world leaders to use smoking rooms during the G20 economic conference.

“Where’s My Million Dollars?”

When I entered my friend Jason's house he was shouting into his telephone, “Where's my million dollars?” There was a pause, after which Jason insisted, “I want you to pay me the million dollars you promised me!” His face was red and he was angry.

To my shock, my senior friend, a former U.S. military intelligence officer, had been paying tens of thousands of dollars in “processing fees” to con artists that initially contacted him by mail with the “good news” of his fantastic winnings. After he mailed them checks for a few dollars, they contacted him by phone and told him to wire hundreds, then thousands, of dollars, to win his big prize, which he did. But the prize money never came. Now Jason is out tens of thousands of dollars, money he intended to leave to his children.

The success of drug decriminalization in Portugal

In 2001, Portugal became the only EU-member state to decriminalize drugs, a distinction which continues through to the present. Last year, working with the Cato Institute, I went to that country in order to research the effects of the decriminalization law (which applies to all substances, including cocaine and heroin) and to interview both Portuguese and EU drug policy officials and analysts (the central EU drug policy monitoring agency is, by coincidence, based in Lisbon). Evaluating the policy strictly from an empirical perspective, decriminalization has been an unquestionable success, leading to improvements in virtually every relevant category and enabling Portugal to manage drug-related problems (and drug usage rates) far better than most Western nations that continue to treat adult drug consumption as a criminal offense.

Endless pursuit of John Demjanjuk is too much

Demjanjuk's story shows that he was serving in the Russian army when captured by Nazis and forced to be a guard at the camp.

Is it unthinkable that, if he had refused, the Nazis would have shot him? His act of obeying his masters was obviously not deliberate.

Canada should bar or prosecute Bush: lawyer

As George W. Bush’s St. Patrick’s Day visit to Calgary draws near, the federal government is facing pressure from activists and human rights lawyers to bar the former U.S. president from the country or prosecute him for war crimes and crimes against humanity once he steps on Canadian soil.

Bush is scheduled to speak at the Telus Convention Centre March 17, but Vancouver lawyer Gail Davidson says that because Bush has been “credibly accused” of supporting torture in Iraq and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Canada has a legal obligation to deny him entry under Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. The law says foreign nationals who have committed war crimes or crimes against humanity, including torture, are “inadmissible” to Canada.
