OBAMA HEADS TO GERMANY AND ENDORSES ANGELA MERKEL’S DECISION TO LET IN A MILLION MIGRANTS

Barack Obama today declared the European Union is one of the ‘greatest achievements of modern times’ as he continued his blitz against Brexit. Speaking in Germany on the latest leg of his farewell tour, the US President praised the EU for ending centuries of war in Europe. And he claimed the ‘entire world’ needs a ‘united Europe’ days after making a forceful case against Brexit while on a visit to London.

Is China Massing Troops Along North Korea's Border?

n Saturday, North Korea test fired a submarine based ballistic missile off the east coast of the Korean Peninsula. Though the missile only traveled 19 miles, which has led South Korean officials to deem the test a failure, the test is the most successful to date. The US military tracked a previous submarine launch on April 14th, which didn’t appear to reach flight at all.

Prior to the launch, multiple international news agencies reported that 2,000 Chinese soldiers were massing along the border with North Korea, in anticipation of a possible 5th nuclear test (which hasn’t happened). China’s Defense Ministry vehemently denied the claim, saying “The relevant report does not accord with the facts…the Chinese military maintains normal combat readiness and training on the China-North Korea border.”

WORSE THAN CRIMINALS — COPS USE ASSET FORFEITURE TO STEAL $53K FROM AN ORPHANAGE AND A CHURCH

The criminal depths to which police will sink to bolster their budgets, apparently have no limit, as a recent case of police theft in Oklahoma illustrates. To keep society safe, sheriff’s deputies in Muskogee County, Oklahoma robbed a church and an orphanage of $53,000. Real American heroes. Eh Wah, 40, a refugee from Burma, who became a US citizen more than a decade ago, was traveling with the cash to deliver it to the intended recipients when he was targetted by modern day, state-sanctioned pirates — for a broken tail light. Eh Wah had been entrusted with the money by the members of his Christian band who had been on a 19-city tour raising funds for the Dr. T. Thanbyah Christian Institute, a religious liberal arts college in Burma serving the Karen community there. And, they had also collected funds for the Hsa Thoo Lei orphanage in Thailand, which serves internally displaced Karen people.

Do Hillary Clinton’s Emails Expose A Scheme To Trade US Secrets For Political Influence?

Back in August, I wrote a post titled The real email question: Did Hillary Clinton sell US secrets? As much as I loathe Hillary, this was a very serious question based on the facts that we know. The IG representing the 17 US intelligence agencies identified two emails residing on Hillary Clinton’s private, unsecure email server as being properly classified as TS\TK, that is, the were classified Top Secret and compartmentalized under the code words Talent Keyhole which indicates that it is imagery deriving from a KH-11 reconnaissance satellite. If the emails had merely contained a description of the satellite imagery, even if the subject were classified, there is no way a reader could ascertain if the imagery came from a KH-11 or a drone or a manned flight or an on the ground agent. This implies that the emails contained the actual imagery (with no security markings, we’ve heard of that before).

National Security Letters are now constitutional, judge rules

A judge who in 2013 declared that National Security Letters (NSLs) were unconstitutional has now changed her mind in an unsealed ruling made public Thursday.

Federal investigators issue tens of thousands of NSLs each year to banks, ISPs, car dealers, insurance companies, doctors, and others. The letters, which demand personal information, don't need a judge's signature and come with a gag to the recipient that forbids the disclosure of the NSL to the public or the target.

The NSL brouhaha strangely isn't even about the Fourth Amendment right to privacy, as the courts have generally stated that the information sought in the letters is a business record not protected by the Constitution. Instead, the legal fight is about the First Amendment.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I have to wonder just what the Federal government had on US District Judge Susan Illston, to compel her to turn her opinion around so absolutely completely on this issue.

David Swanson: US Wars Are Not Waged Out of Generosity or for Democracy

Why do we seem to be trapped in an endless cycle of war, with each new military adventure promised to be different than the last? David Swanson's War Is a Lie takes apart and thoroughly refutes every major argument that has been used to justify wars, especially those wars most widely trumpeted as just and good.

In this interview, David Swanson, author of War Is a Lie, counters the theory that war is an inevitable part of human nature, says the antiwar movement is larger than the dominant media suggest and shares the view that wars are fought primarily for money and markets.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Congress - and the White House - are all purchased commodities in the struggle for market domination by corporations.

And those naive enough to believe that the American election process gives us the candidates - and ultimately - the right people for the jobs of Congressional representatives and president, are fooling themselves.

By the times candidates are vetted, and chosen (and financially supported) by the corporations which own them, it matters not what the voters think at all; voting in this country has devolved to a Kabuki-like exercise in which people have the illusion that they have had some say in the matter of American leadership, when they have none whatsoever.

And the degree of vote-rigging in this country?!? Absolutely amazing. If you have not seen it, please see Bev Harris' video, "Hacking democracy", which demonstrates, painfully clearly, how voting machines can be rigged in favor of a particular candidate.

Obama Dismisses NKorea Proposal on Halting Nuke Tests

A day after North Korea's foreign minister told The Associated Press that his country is ready to halt its nuclear tests if the United States suspends its annual military exercises with South Korea, President Barack Obama said Sunday that Washington isn't taking the proposal seriously and Pyongyang would "have to do better than that."

North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Su Yong, interviewed Saturday by the AP, also defended his country's right to maintain a nuclear deterrent and warned that Pyongyang won't be cowed by international sanctions. And for those waiting for the North's regime to collapse, he had this to say: Don't hold your breath.

"Stop the nuclear war exercises in the Korean Peninsula, then we should also cease our nuclear tests," he said in his first interview Saturday with a Western news organization.

Obama dismissed North Korea's latest overture at a news conference Sunday with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Hannover, Germany.

Webmaster's Commentary:

A short memo to President Obama: the longer you wait to engage with China in serious negotiations to replace the Armistice (which is simply a cessation of military activities)with a real peace treaty, the sooner Kim Jung Un, or his successor will possess - and be able to successfully aim - a nuclear weapon.

This should have been on your "to do" list from the very moment you took the oath of office; but obviously, you have chosen to just let the situation fester here, because you have been hoping for a potential war with China, in order to defeat the rise of the yuan.

But sir, I need to ask you: did you happen to get the memo that last week that China is issuing a gold-backed yuan, which is not convertible at all into US dollars?!?

Apparently, Mr. President, the Chinese government was way ahead of you on this.

TPP Consultation Turns Away Scores of Lower Mainlanders (BC Canada)

Scores of Lower Mainland residents who wanted to tell the House of Commons Standing Committee on International Trade what they think of the 12-country Trans-Pacific Partnership trade and investment deal negotiated by the Harper Conservatives were denied that chance Monday.

More than 50 people rallied outside the Richmond Radisson Hotel where the hearings were scheduled to be held, eventually being frisked before entering the hearing hall on a red carpet laid by protesters that read "170,000 Say No to TPP" -- referring to the number of signatures on an anti-TPP petition.

Although the committee did choose to hear from some applicants Monday, as for 170 other members of the activist group Leadnow who had applied to address the committee, they learned last week, without explanation, that they would not be heard.

"They were all rejected," said the group's Vancouver organizer, Jolan Bailey. "They didn't even tell us when they did. We only found out when they published the list of who was speaking -- we noticed that none of our people were on there."

IN 1 OUT OF EVERY 5 AMERICAN FAMILIES, NOBODY HAS A JOB

If nobody is working in one out of every five U.S. families, then how in the world can the unemployment rate be close to 5 percent as the Obama administration keeps insisting? The truth, of course, is that the U.S. economy is in far worse condition than we are being told. Last week, I discussed the fact that the Federal Reserve has found that 47 percent of all Americans would not be able to come up with $400 for an unexpected visit to the emergency room without borrowing it or selling something. But Barack Obama and his minions never bring up that number. Nor do they ever bring up the fact that 20 percent of all families in America are completely unemployed. The following comes directly from the Bureau of Labor Statistics…

Webmaster's Commentary:

These are the real unemployment numbers, which are just going to get worse with time.

This is why the US government is in such a hot hurry to get a major war going, so as to attempt to distract Americans from the real culprits in their economic misery.

MALAYSIA WILL LIKELY FORCE ‘POLITICAL BLOGS’ AND NEWS WEBSITES TO REGISTER WITH THE GOVERNMENT

Malaysia’s Communications and Multimedia Ministry has formally proposed legal amendments to the Attorney General that would require the country’s political blogs and online news portals to register with the government. Minister Salleh Said Keruak denies that the legislation amounts to censorship, arguing that the proposal is designed to preserve the Internet as a tool for promoting Malaysia’s economic growth, and meant to protect the country against internal divisions brought about by misleading information published online, he says.

Human rights groups and media freedom advocates denounced the proposal as a curtailment of free speech, saying the move reverses the government’s earlier stated commitment to promoting Internet freedom.

Webmaster's Commentary:

A short memo to Minister Salleh Said Keruak: this proposed legislation is absolute, and complete, codswallop, and you know it!

Instead of attempting to silence the messenger, is it possible that the current government of Malaysia could, please, be a little less corrupt and a little more transparent?!?

WHITE HOUSE ADMITS — LOCKING PEOPLE IN CAGES FOR VICTIMLESS CRIMES IS DEVASTATING TO THE ECONOMY

On Saturday, economists in U.S. President Barack Obama’s administration released a report detailing the adverse effects on the economy derived from locking non-violent drug offenders and criminals behind bars.

For decades, a guiding philosophy of authoritarians was that locking more people up would result in less crime. This has created a prison state in the U.S., which represents 4.4% of the world’s population yet houses 22% of the world’s prisoners.

Since 1980 alone, the US prison population has skyrocketed by nearly 5 times.

H0wever, the negative effects of such a totalitarian approach to drug crimes and other victimless offenses is having a staggering economic impact on the United States.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The alleged US government's "war on drugs" is just plain illogical, costly, and completely ridiculous, period, end of discussion.

The country of Portugal has been a trail blazer, when it comes to enlightened drug policies. What they did was to decriminalise small amounts of drugs for personal use, but urge counseling to help people get off drugs.

The result?!?

A massive decrease in illegal drug use, and much less experimentation with drugs by teens.

But, unfortunately, what the US government appears pathologically incapable of doing is learning from both the successes of other countries, when it comes to drug and prison programs that make sense.

For example, why is Sweden closing so many of their prisons?!? The reason for this is that the focus of prison is 100% rehabilitation, and the recidivism here is minimal.

OF course the Swedish approach is logical, and the results speak for themselves.

Logic and the US government, unfortunately, have the most tenuous relationship possible at best.

NEW CRISPR GENE EDITING METHOD CAN EDIT SINGLE LETTERS OF DNA

Harvard University researchers have developed a new method of using CRISPR to alter single letters in the DNA code. This opens up the possibility of reversing mutations caused by the changing of only one letter, which represents nearly two thirds of all genetic mutations.

CRISPR has revolutionized the world of gene editing. It has allowed scientists to conduct advanced research into diseases, research live cells, and it’s not expensive or overly complicated. But one thing it has always lacked is specificity. In some respects, it is the sledgehammer, not the sword; the cleaver, not the scalpel.

That is, until now.

Harvard University researchers have developed a new method of using CRISPR to alter single letters in the DNA code. This opens up the possibility of reversing mutations (and the diseases that stem from them) caused by the changing of only one letter, which represents nearly two thirds of all genetic mutations.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This is a technology which can be used for either great good...or great evil, in the wrong hands.

Remember those genetically engineered armies in the Tolkien books?!? We are on the brink of being able to create that with this new advance in gene editing. And trust me, DARPA is going to want to get their collective hands around this ASAP.

DONALD TRUMP PREDICTS MAJOR LAWSUIT COMING AGAINST TED CRUZ OVER HIS CANADIAN BIRTH

Rafael Edward Cruz, better known as "Ted," was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada on December 22, 1970. Cruz's father, Rafael, was born in Cuba, while his mother, Eleanor, was born in Delaware. Though the United States Constitution requires that anyone running for president must be a "Natural Born Citizen," the document never details the definition of the term. While the issue was assumed to be dead, Donald Trump brought Cruz's birther issue up during his most recent campaign stop, as reported by The Hill on April 23.

Webmaster's Commentary:

There is an important fact to keep in mind.

Rafael Cruz (Ted's father) was married to his second wife Julia Ann Garza from 1959 – 1996. Ted's mother, Eleanor Elizabeth Wilson, gave birth to Ted in 1970, while Ted's father was still married to Julia. Under Section 309(c) of the INA, children born out-of-wedlock to Americans abroad do NOT become US citizens at birth! They must be naturalized.

Ted Cruz was not a US citizen at birth.

The Founding Fathers did not need to define what "Natural Born" meant inside the Constitution as it had been defined in existing legal theory in works such as "The Law of Nations" by Emerich de Vattel, published in 1758 and relied on heavily by the framers of the Constitution. "Natural Born" was already legally defined when the Constitution was written as "born inside the nation."

The inclusion of the "Natural Born" requirement for the US Presidency was proposed at the Constitutional Convention by Chief Justice John Jay, who wrote, "Permit me to hint, whether it would not be wise and seasonable to provide a strong check to the admission of Foreigners into the administration of our national Government and to declare expressly that the Command in Chief of the American army shall not be given to, nor devolve on, any but a natural born Citizen..."

POLICE SWEEP AWAY BRAZIL’S ‘STREET CHILDREN’ AHEAD OF OLYMPICS

With a faltering economy and an $11 billion investment at stake, Brazil wants nothing more than to stage a successful Olympic Games come August. The government is building new transportation and sports venues, hiring security guards and deploying soldiers, and sprucing up Rio de Janeiro’s most-visited areas. But “cleaning the streets,” as the project is euphemistically known, is not an effort to haul garbage but to sweep away homeless people and drug dealers—including the often drug-addicted children who live on the sidewalks of some of Rio’s wealthiest neighborhoods.

In the Copacabana and Maracanã areas, two of the neighborhoods preparing to host the Olympics, teenagers and children as young as 7 sleep by the roadside or beg for change. Boys often join gangs and sell drugs to survive while girls frequently turn to prostitution. Many smoke crack or sniff glue. Some live on the streets full time; others spend nights in the favelas, or nearby shantytowns.

Webmaster's Commentary:

A society should be judged on how it treats the most vulnerable of its citizens; what Brazil is doing to the most impoverished, and most vulnerable of its street kids demonstrates a complete, and institutionalized, emotional callousness to the conditions which put these kids on the streets to begin with.

Even with the Olympics coming in August, this will not end well for the Brazilian government, or its people.

Metro’s failure-prone subway — once considered a transportation jewel — is mired in disrepair because the transit agency neglected to heed warnings that its aging equipment and poor safety culture would someday lead to chronic breakdowns and calamities.

No One Knows How A Brokered GOP Convention Would Work

No one knows how a brokered GOP convention would work, but Cruz & Kasich are working together to force one

WASHINGTON Sen. Ted Cruz and Gov. John Kasich will start campaigning in coordination Monday, after making statements Sunday night that they would work together to deny frontrunner Donald Trump an outright nomination. A contested GOP convention would allow delegates to vote independently for who should lead the party’s ticket in November. Trump has 845 delegates and needs 392 more to claim the party’s nomination. David Lightman explains what could happen if Cruz and Kasich succeed in forcing a contested convention.

Will John Kasich Hand Trump the Nomination?

The best delegate trackers out there still think it likely that Donald Trump will fall short of the 1,237 delegates he needs to secure the GOP nomination on the first ballot.

But there’s one man who can cut a deal and instantly make Trump the de facto nominee: Ohio governor John Kasich. He would then probably be responsible for setting in motion devastating GOP losses in November of not only the White House but also control of the U.S. Senate. Kasich himself claims there is “zero chance” he would sign on as Trump’s running mate as part of a deal to deliver his delegates for Trump. But Lyndon Johnson said the same thing before he became John F. Kennedy’s running mate, and so too did John Nance Garner before hitching up with FDR in 1932.

Intel To Lay Off 12,000 People

Intel to lay off 12,000 people. Is the iconic chipmaker in trouble?
The technology pioneer announced a new focus that shifts its business further away from its legacy in personal computers to the fast growing cloud and 'Internet of Things' industries.

As it navigates its path into the future, Intel, the 47-year-old corporation best known for making microprocessor chips that power personal computers, has announced significant changes to its business.

On Tuesday, Intel’s CEO Brian Krzanich said in a letter to employees that the company over the next year will cut its 107,300-person global workforce by 12,000 people, or 11 percent.

The move, said Mr. Krzanich, is meant to help transform Intel from a PC company to one that powers the cloud and the ‘Internet of Things,’ a term used to describe connected devices such as washing machines, coffeemakers, and automobiles. It also will save the chipmaker $750 million this year, says Intel in a public announcement.

Texas has lost 84,000 oil and gas jobs in the oil bust

Texas lost 84,000 oil and gas jobs in just 16 months, according to the Texas Alliance of Energy Producers, which has been tracking the impact of the oil and gas bust across the state.

Karr Ingham, the petroleum economist who authors the group’s Texas Petro Index (which has also been in decline for 16 months), announced the latest data at the Texas Alliance of Energy Producers annual meeting this past week in Austin.

An estimated 222,000 Texans remain on so-called “upstream” oil and gas industry payrolls – the part of the industry that includes exploration and production activity. That’s down 27.5 percent from a high of about 306,020 in December 2014.

Ingham expects tough times are still ahead in Texas oil, with more layoffs to come.

Oil tanker laden with North Dakota crude reaches Netherlands

A petroleum tanker laden with 175,000 barrels of North Dakota crude was being offloaded in Europe on Wednesday, the first such overseas shipment of the state’s oil since Congress lifted a 40-year ban on crude exports in December.
***
“It’s a big deal,” said Ron Ness, president of the North Dakota Petroleum Council, a trade group that represents about 500 companies working in the oil patch in the western part of the state. “Once you get a barrel to sea, it will fetch a better price.”

The ban on crude exports was put in place in response to the energy crisis of the 1970s.
***
“Where crude goes is where it gets the best value,” Roper said. “We are always seeking higher value. When the value is right, we will definitely do it.”

The company has said that producers could earn up to $14 more per barrel for domestic sweet crude by selling it on the world market.
***
Ness said lifting the export ban should help bring higher prices for North Dakota oil.

“The whole world is a market now,” he said.

US Lobbyists Meddling in Thailand a Concern For All Of Asia

By Tony Cartalucci

Thailand-based newspaper Bangkok Post in its article, “Yingluck denies Thaksin’s involvement,” refers to ousted, US-backed dictator Thaksin Shinawatra, removed from power in 2006 by a military coup after nearly two terms in office trampling the rule of law and the lives and livelihood of the Thai people, and claims that he has extensively relied on foreign lobbyists in a bid to return to power.

During this struggle to return to power, he has placed a series of proxies in his place, most notably his own brother-in-law Somchai Wongsawat who served as prime minister in 2008, and his own sister Yingluck Shinawatra who served as prime minister from 2011-2014 before being removed by a subsequent coup...

EU-US Trade Deal 'Will Fail'

EU-US Trade Deal 'Will Fail' If US Refuses Concessions: German Minister
Negotiations on a US-EU free trade deal "will fail" if the US refuses to make concessions, German Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel warned Sunday ahead of a visit by US President Barack Obama.

"The Americans want to hold fast to their 'Buy American' idea. We can't accept that. They don't want to open their public tenders to European companies. For me, that goes against free trade, If the Americans hold fast to this position, we don't need the free trade treaty. And TTIP will fail."

History of Nordic EU referendums holds lessons for British vote

With Britain’s noisy campaign over a possible Brexit polarizing voters, tight referendums over EU membership two decades ago in Norway and Sweden offer lessons how campaigns that stay positive and focus on ordinary people can swing voters at the last minute.

In the space of just two weeks in 1994, Sweden voted by 52.3 percent to join the EU, while Norway voted by 52.2 percent to stay out. They were two of the closest-run EU referendums in history, momentous decisions that split families, generations and political parties.

Both nations are relevant to the British campaign. Norway is touted as a model by Brexit supporters, with close EU trade ties despite remaining outside. Sweden is seen as a successful arm’s-length approach to EU membership, retaining its own currency.

Well, racism, for one. But that part is in your head. Trump has never mentioned race. He has mentioned illegal immigration and he has mentioned religion and terrorism. But the race part is all you, influenced no doubt by the “wisdom” of the Internet. None of that came from Trump’s mouth or brain.

College Board deletes discussion on monetary/banking reforms as ‘not related to teaching AP Economics;’ Emperor’s New Clothes naked debt continues waddling down US pot-holed streets

*hyperlinks/videos live at source*

This article documents a discussion among Advanced Placement Macroeconomic teachers I initiated on our discussion board. Because this topic concerns literally ~$1,000,000 near-instant benefits for each average US household, Americans literally have nothing more valuable for their attention.

Highlights of this discussion:

Game-changing data revealing our .01% looting of trillions, along with solutions to reverse this condition were met with two leading teachers’ denial and straw man arguments. Of course, this is the opposite of professional academic discussion. Zero colleagues spoke-up in support or interest of this data.

My pointing to these two colleagues’ straw man arguments with a step-by-step introduction to see the data was met with silence; both from the two opposing colleagues and everyone else.

‘NYT’ exposes Clinton as most hawkish candidate when it’s too late for readers to choose

The piece is an ode to Clinton’s “pugnacity” and her “muscular brand of American foreign policy,” with a celebratory chorus line of Robert Gates, Jake Sullivan and various functionaries. And lest you had any doubt about the newspaper’s point of view, there’s this foolish bonbon at the end:

It’s an open question how well Clinton’s hawkish instincts match the country’s mood. Americans are weary of war and remain suspicious of foreign entanglements. And yet, after the retrenchment of the Obama years, there is polling evidence that they are equally dissatisfied with a portrait of their country as a spent force

It’s not an open question actually. As Stephanie Schriock of Emily’s List told J Street last week, the mood of the people is isolationist, they don’t want to be engaged in foreign wars.

Firms that paid for Clinton speeches have US gov't interests

It's not just Wall Street banks. Most companies and groups that paid Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton to speak between 2013 and 2015 have lobbied federal agencies in recent years, and more than one-third are government contractors, an Associated Press review has found. Their interests are sprawling and would follow Clinton to the White House should she win election this fall. The AP's review of federal records, regulatory filings and correspondence showed that almost all the 82 corporations, trade associations and other groups that paid for or sponsored Clinton's speeches have actively sought to sway the government — lobbying, bidding for contracts, commenting on federal policy and in some cases contacting State Department officials or Clinton herself during her tenure as secretary of state.

Fiat Chrysler recalls 1.1 million cars, SUVs for rollaway issue
***
The automaker said the recall is linked to as many as 41 injuries because drivers mistakenly believed they had placed the vehicles in park before exiting.

The recall covers the 2012-2014 Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 sedans and 2014-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee sport utility vehicles. About 811,000 vehicles in the United States are affected, along with about 52,000 vehicles in Canada; nearly 17,000 in Mexico and almost 250,000 vehicles outside North America.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which upgraded its probe into the issue in February, said on Friday that its "investigation of the shifter in these vehicles showed it is clearly a safety issue that has led to hundreds of crashes and dozens of injuries.

Second Pipeline Shelved

Second major Northeast natural gas pipeline shelved as New York rejects Constitution pipeline

New York's Department of Environmental Conservation on Friday rejected a Section 401 Water Quality Certification for the Constitution pipeline, effectively shelving the 124-mile interstate natural gas project.

It happened two days after Kinder Morgan suddenly announced on April 20 that it would suspend all work on its 420-mile Northeast Energy Direct, another major interstate pipeline project in the Northeast, due to economic reasons. In fact, in New York and Pennsylvania, Constitution would have largely paralleled the supply path of Northeast Energy Direct.

Constitution's application failed to meet New York's water quality standards>>>
