NSA sued by Wikimedia, rights groups over mass surveillance

Bulk collection there violates the constitution's First Amendment, which protects freedom of speech and association, and the Fourth Amendment, which protects against unreasonable search and seizure, the lawsuit said.

The plaintiffs include the Wikimedia Foundation, which runs the online encyclopedia Wikipedia, the conservative Rutherford Institute, Amnesty International USA and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, among other groups.

The groups said in the lawsuit that upstream surveillance "reduces the likelihood" that clients, journalists, foreign government officials, victims of human rights abuses and other individuals will share sensitive information with them.

Legal standing, which requires the organizations to show individual, particular harm, is the most significant obstacle for them, said Stephen Vladeck, a professor at American University Washington College of Law.

New Snowden Documents: CIA Has Spent 10 Years Hacking iPhones, iPads

Newly released documents obtained via NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden have revealed that the CIA attempted for a decade to gain access to data on Apple’s i devices as part of the intelligence establishment’s continued mass spying program.

“Studying both ‘physical’ and “non-invasive” techniques, U.S. government-sponsored research has been aimed at discovering ways to decrypt and ultimately penetrate Apple’s encrypted firmware,” The Intercept report by Glenn Greenwald states.

The CIA set its sights on accessing user data on iPhones and iPads all over the globe, according to the documents, as well as attempting to introduce backdoors to the devices, in order to monitor them at will.

New Zealand PM Retracts Vow to Resign if Mass Surveillance Is Shown

So now that it’s proven that New Zealand does exactly that which Prime Minister Key vowed would cause him to resign if it were proven, is he preparing his resignation speech? No: that’s something a political official with a minimal amount of integrity would do. Instead – even as he now refuses to say what he has repeatedly said before: that GCSB does not engage in mass surveillance – he’s simply retracting his pledge as though it were a minor irritant, something to be casually tossed aside:

Cops across the U.S. are being disciplined, not for brutality, but for not writing enough tickets

As there is no money in solving murders or preventing rapes, police departments in America have focused their duties on traffic citations and the drug war. Both of these venues are highly profitable for departments.

City and state governments have become so addicted to these revenue streams that we are now seeing full-on military raids on people in fruitless attempts to find drugs and money. Along with the drug raids, we are seeing police officers forced to collect a certain amount of revenue through traffic enforcement, or risk losing their jobs.

Over the weekend, 4 more state troopers from Tennessee exposed their department for enforcing a quota system. There would be many more according to the troopers, but their fellow cops are afraid to speak up for fear of retaliation.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Maybe instead of shooting peoples' dogs they can ticket them under the leash laws? That might ease the tensions somewhat!

A Few Thoughts on Cryptographic Engineering

In case you’re not familiar with SSL and its successor TLS, what you should know is that they're the most important security protocols on the Internet. In a world full of untrusted networks, SSL and TLS are what makes modern communication possible.

Or rather, that’s the theory. In practice, SSL and TLS have been a more like a work in progress. In part this is because they were developed during an era when modern cryptographic best practices weren't nailed down yet. But more to the point: it's because even when the crypto is right, many software implementations still get things wrong.

With all that in mind, there’s a third aspect of SSL/TLS that doesn't get nearly as much attention. That is: the SSL protocol itself was deliberately designed to be broken.

Let me explain what I mean by that.

The Origin of the ‘New Cold War’

To start with: the ‘new Cold War,’ against Russia, is something of a misnomer, because it differs from the original version, against the U.S.S.R., in that it’s already a hot war, which started in Ukraine as being the key proxy-state for the American Government’s chief foreign-policy aim, of defeating Russia; and it’s a war that is very bloody, and widely lied-about in both the U.S. and Europe, but that is discussed in Russia as if it were somehow the result of mere errors by Western powers, when in fact all of the Western leaders knew from the get-go that this was intended to be a lynching of Russia by Uncle Sam, and when the EU have been going along with this aim because the U.S. aristocracy supposedly have the interests of European aristocrats in mind and not only their own: it’s ’the Western Alliance,’ after all.

The gap between richest and poorest has dramatically widened in the past decade as wealthy households paid off their debts and piled up savings following the financial crisis, a report warns today.

By contrast, the worst-off families are far less financially secure than before the recession triggered by the near- collapse of several major banks. They have an average of less than a week’s pay set aside and are more often in the red.

The Guardian’s Homan Square story was huge on the internet—but not in Chicago media

On Election Day just over a week ago, as this city’s reporters and editors focused on whether the incumbent mayor with ties to the White House would win big or be forced into a historic run-off, an out-of-town newspaper produced a startling account of alleged abuse at a police facility called Homan Square.

The blockbuster story, published in The Guardian and written by Brooklyn-based journalist Spencer Ackerman, described the warehouse as the “domestic equivalent of a CIA black site,” where secretive police units operate and detainees are “disappeared,” with no access to lawyers or relatives and no immediate record of their whereabouts.

With its comparisons to war-on-terror practices and allegations of police brutality, the story landed big on the internet, with well more than 100,000 social shares and write-ups across the Web. The one place it didn’t get much traction: Chicago media.

The Relationship between Washington and ISIS: The Evidence

A central myth is that Washington now arms ‘moderate Syrian rebels’, to both overthrow the Syrian Government and supposedly defeat the ‘extremist rebels’. This claim became more important in 2014, when the rationale of US aggression against Syria shifted from ‘humanitarian intervention’ to a renewal of Bush’s ‘war on terror’.

A distinct controversy is whether the al Qaeda styled groups (especially Jabhat al Nusra and ISIS) have been generated as a sort of organic reaction to the repeated US interventions, or whether they are actually paid agents of Washington.

The Corporate Media has ignored this story. The local news outlets in Chicago have sent reporters to the Police Department who asked the cops if they were kidnapping people off the street and torturing them. The Police said No. So that was the end of their investigations.

The Punishment for Ignoring Obamacare Penalty Might Surprise You

Now that April 15th is on the horizon, many taxpayers are bracing themselves for the inevitable penalty that will hit them if they don’t sign up for Obamacare. It’s estimated that at least 3 million households may have to pony up 1% of their income, or $95 per adult, if they don’t have insurance; a number which is poised to expand to 2.5% for the 2016 tax year.

However, for all its bluster and intimidating language, the Affordable Care Act might not have any teeth. Recently, a tax expert writing for Forbes noticed that Obamacare, while far-reaching and burdensome in terms of what it demands from the American people, offers little to no repercussion for anyone who would be tempted to avoid it.

SWAT Team Shows Up To Elementary School to Promote Police State USA

Arlington, Texas – A fully loaded and equipped SWAT team invaded Webb Elementary School for “Career Day” this week.

The officers weren’t there to raid the school or arrest anyone, but they certainly looked like they were going to so. The SWAT officers were all carrying high-powered weapons and wearing paramilitary gear as if they were about to raid a terrorist organization.

The police proudly bragged about the event on their Facebook page, posting a number of pictures with fully-clad SWAT members standing on a stage in front of small children.

The police say that they were there to “educate” the children, but were these theatrics truly necessary for a career day at an elementary school?

One of the comments on the facebook post by Arlington police summed up the entire premise of such a display:

Webmaster's Commentary:

Were I a parent of a child at that school, and had not been given a written/emailed notice by the teacher of my child that this was going to happen, with an "opt-out option", after that event, I would have pulled that kid out of school and started home schooling so quickly, that the principal's head would be swimming.

This has absolutely no place in true education, and that the principal didn't have the horse sense to resist this must mean that they were "educated" via Common Core Curriculum!!

Scott Walker’s Secret Weapon

Wisconsin’s governor wouldn’t be a conservative superstar without his state’s Legislature.

MADISON, Wisconsin—Scott Walker loves the haters. In recent years as Wisconsin has moved further to the right, the mild-mannered preacher’s son has become in the eyes of his opponents an icon of all that is evil—and he seems to relish it. On the stump, the governor is fond of talking up the fact that he’s “the No. 1 target in America of the labor unions and many others on the left,” and the hecklers that seem willing to follow him to the ends of the Earth give him a chance to flex his conservative muscles. They feed the perception that in Wisconsin, it was Walker against the world, and Walker won.

Next week Gov. Walker is expected to sign right-to-work legislation that will burnish his reputation as a bold fighter who stood against the hordes and remains unvanquished.

Two days into Boston Marathon bombing trial, defense already facing challenges

Before testimony began on Thursday, Tsarnaev’s lawyers complained to Judge George O’Toole that survivors’ testimony from Wednesday was too gruesome and should be limited. Defense attorney David Bruck argued that under federal death penalty law, victim-impact testimony is supposed to be presented during the sentencing phase of the trial.

Prosecutors countered that the survivors were not giving victim-impact testimony, instead merely describing what they saw on the day. Judge O’Toole ultimately agreed with prosecutors and refused to limit survivors’ testimony.

As Boston Marathon Bomber Admits Guilt, FBI Sued for Killing Friend of Tsarnaevs in Florida

On the trial’s first day, defense attorneys acknowledged their client’s role in the bombings, but said he was heavily influenced by his older brother. The trial comes as the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Florida has announced it will sue the FBI for $30 million on behalf of the family of an unarmed Chechen man killed during questioning over his ties to the Tsarnaev brothers. The FBI says an agent shot Ibragim Todashev in self-defense after Todashev attacked him, but his parents have accused the FBI of killing their son "in cold blood."

Beware of Savior Merkel

A few days ago, The International New York Times published an interesting op-ed by German journalist Jochen Bittner, who is a political editor at the staunch pro-American newspaper Die Zeit and a contributing opinion writer for The International New York Times.

If you read Bittner’s article, you will understand why other journalists are wondering which drugs the guys at Die Zeit are taking.

Bittner is worried that “our enlightened societies” suffer from an “autoimmune disease.” This is evident from the reluctance to support a war against Russia, the widespread opposition to the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) and the election of an “anti-globalization” government in Greece.

Thus, the German journalist comes to the conclusion that the West urgently needs “a dose of the Kennedy spirit.” And according to Bittner, there is only one Western leader left who has what it takes to save us:

Ohio State to require proof of vaccinations for incoming students

New Ohio State University students will have to prove that they’ve had shots to protect against a list of vaccine-preventable illnesses.

The vaccine requirement, which starts in August, comes almost a year after a mumps outbreak on and near campus sickened almost 500 people. A later measles outbreak north of central Ohio amplified discussions about boosting immunization rates throughout the state, including at universities and colleges.

Wireless Charging: A Surprising New Way To Track You

We don’t normally think of charging our phones as a two-way street.

Plug in your device and you get energy, end of story. The most you’ll pay is a few more dimes on your electricity bill, and that’s if you’re at home.

But in a public space like an airport or cafe where free, wireless charging stations are now being set up by Powermat , the price will be a little bit of your data.

New Mexico students walk out in protest of Common Core standards

Opponents say the exams distract from real learning, put added stress on students and staff members, and waste resources, especially in poor districts.

Parents and students in Colorado, Pennsylvania and New York have already opted out of the exams. Others are lobbying lawmakers and education officials for change.

In Florida last week, Gov. Rick Scott suspended spring testing for 11th graders.

In New Mexico, a few hundred students at Albuquerque High School joined the walkout despite warnings from administrators that they could face discipline. About 100 other students at nearby Highland High School also left class as testing began.

Over 20 Trans Pacific Partnership protests in action

Protests are expected in more than 20 towns and cities today against a proposed trans-Pacific trade and investment treaty.

Critics of the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) said the treaty, planned for 12 countries including the USA, Japan, Singapore and Australia, was shrouded in secrecy and was a "corporate power grab."

Supporters of the TPPA, including New Zealand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the deal would deepen economic ties and open up trade, boost investment flows, and promote closer economic and regulatory co-operation.

Protesters planned to gather in up to 23 centres, including all New Zealand's largest cities. Demonstrations in Auckland, Wellington and Hamilton were scheduled to start at 1pm and others were already underway.

Greece Proposes To Become A Tax-Collecting Police State: Will "Wire" Tourists And Unleash Them As "Tax Inspectors"

Western Medicine Under Fire: The Death of Informed Consent

Jefferey Jaxen
Activist Post

A monumental ethical issue is hovering over the entire medical establishment in the United States that threatens its integrity and trust. The human element is being removed from the equation, replaced by computers to give us our options, and legislation to remove our choice. Somewhere in the shuffle, the individual’s informed consent was broken down, lost in the paperwork, and made irrelevant...
