Has Rahm Emanuel lost his financial nerve?

He's just won re-election, with his clout presumably now as great as it ever will be.

He has a first-class financial crisis to take advantage of—and constituents, especially in the business community, who know the time really has come to make tough decisions.

So why is Mayor Rahm Emanuel suddenly acting like a fiscal wimp, engaging in the kind of can-kicking that got Chicago into trouble?

Europe’s economic war on Israel

When it comes to dealing with the increasing calls to boycott, divest from and sanction Israel, the United States and Europe are moving in two opposite directions.

Last week, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley signed into law legislation that bars public entities from conducting business with companies that discriminate against Israel. It’s the first of its kind, though other states are likely to follow suit.

ime to Settle the Bill: PM Yatsenyuk Hesitates, Asks for Debt Restructure

Ukraine’s foreign debt should be restructured on reasonable terms for Kiev, otherwise the government will not repay loans, Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said.
Ukraine owes $42 billion to its foreign creditors. The government offered its private lenders a reconstruction plan to try to repay its debt, the prime minister said.

"We didn't borrow this money, but we'll restructure it [foreign debt], we'll remove the burden from our future generations," Yatsenyuk said, adding that the debt has to be restructured on favorable terms for Kiev, otherwise Ukraine will crumble.

Yatsenyuk also blamed the previous government of Viktor Yanukovych, stating that it was the former president who borrowed all this money. Thus, creditors, in his mind, should cut some slack for the new government now.

To Pay Off Gov't Debt, Every Ukrainian Must Pay $1,000 to Foreign Creditors

Webmaster's Commentary:

It will be interesting to see just how much slack the country's creditors are going to be willing to give Ukraine; otherwise, they are looking at a complete economic collapse.

House Rejects Trade Bill, Rebuffing Obama’s Dramatic Appeal

I Went to a Texas Jail to Roast the Inmates; Here's What I Learned About Incarceration in America

I admit I roasted these people for sheer entertainment purposes -- but also to get myself a glimpse into the American prison system. It's broken. We say we're a free country but we lock up more people than anywhere else on Earth. Almost two MILLION American children have a parent locked up right now. We have more jails and prisons in America than colleges and universities. All this is still hard for me to comprehend. What's happening in this country? Wayne Dicky, the jail administrator who proudly allowed me access to his facility, told me that American jails are de facto mental health facilities. Back in the seventies many psychiatric hospitals were shut down. Now all those people needing mental help wind up in jail instead. I freely walked around the cells and dorms and saw the insanity first hand. We tuck so many damaged people away and forget about them -- like human dust.

Webmaster's Commentary:

A memo to Jeff Ross: treatment of criminals is engineered in this country to keep recidivism rates high; that's job security for everyone involved in the system, and keeps the money flowing.

The US has the highest number of people incarcerated in the industrial world; that's a fact.

And that fact really bothers me when countries like Sweden are closing down many of their prisons, because they don't have enough inmates to fill them. And the reason this is happening is that in Sweden, the total emphasis is on rehabilitation.

But of course, the movers and shakers in the American penal system believe they have absolutely NOTHING to learn from this.

The Top 1% of America’s Top 1%

Almost all of the income to the top tenth of 1% is going actually to the top hundredth of 1%: the wealthiest of the billionaires are getting almost everything. An extreme case: in 2012, the top 0.01% got 5.81% of the income, wherease the top 0.10% got 5.90% of the income. All the rest of the top 0.10%, who were 0.09% of the total population, received only 0.09% of the income, which means that they relatively benefited neither more nor less than did the rest of the U.S. population. So: look only on the billionaires lists in order to find the real beneficiaries that year.

Unfortunately, neither Democratic or Republican Congress people represent the interests of the American people. Indeed, America is no longer a democracy or republic … it’s officially an oligarchy. And the allowance of unlimited campaign spending allows the oligarchs – even foreign ones – to purchase politicians more directly than ever.

So TPP will pass unless we raise hell.

Webmaster's Commentary:

All who vote for this bill are traitors to their alleged constituents, and proving that they only represent the interests of the monied, who I am certain, are paying them well for their efforts.

It should be painfully clear to anyone with half a brain in this country that Congress doesn't represent We the People at this point in this country's history.

The real trick here will be changing the situation without the violence and riots the US government is absolutely ready and able to suppress with extreme prejudice.

Possibly the best way would be for a voting option on all national ballots which states "None of the Above", at which point some candidates worthy of the title of Congressional Representative might emerge.

This may well be wishful thinking on my part, but I have become so thoroughly disenchanted with the US political process, that right now, I couldn't hold my nose and vote for ANY of the "usual suspects" running for President. A choice between two evils... is still evil.

The sociopathic proclivities of those who rise to the top in American politics is pretty scary.

Our view: We’re hoping mileage taxes run out of gas

Politicians don’t like it when tax revenue decreases for any reason, even if they pretend to want us to reduce our carbon footprint. (Isn’t using 1.4 billion gallons less gasoline per year proof that Californians care about the environment?) But the rush to go green doesn’t mean our state leaders want to give up all that green they so enjoy spending, does it?

Buh-Bye, $$$! Russia considers issuing state debt in Yuan

Russia is about to take another major step towards liberating the Ruble from the Dollar System. Its Finance Ministry just revealed it is considering issuing Russian state debt in Chinese Yuan. Zimbabweans will start exchanging ‘quadrillions’ of local dollars for a few U.S. dollars next week, as President Robert Mugabe’s government discards its virtually worthless national currency, the central bank said on Thursday. The southern African country started using foreign currencies like the U.S. dollar and South African rand in 2009 after the Zimbabwean dollar was ruined by hyper-inflation, which hit 500 billion percent in 2008.

House Votes To Change Law Due To Trade Agreement, While Insisting That Trade Agreements Don't Change Laws

Two weeks ago, the House Agriculture Committee voted 38-6 to repeal country-of-origin-labeling. (COOL), and now it's the full House's turn. In a 300-131 vote yesterday the "country of Origin Labeling Amendments Act" (HR 2393) passed with the support of a significant number of Democrats as well as the majority of Republicans.

The bill's prompting and passage came after the World Trade Organisation ruled in favor of Canadian farmers, who sued claiming it was "discriminatory" and thus in violation of Free Trade Agreements. The problem? Cattle bought from abroad would have to be segregated from domestic cattle, increasing costs and making imports less desirable.

With Fast Track coming up for a vote -- perhaps even today -- it's curious to see this snippet in the Associated Press report on the vote by the Speaker of the House:

Bernie Sanders pressures Hillary Clinton to take a stand on trade deal

Sen. Bernie Sanders, the independent senator from Vermont who's running for the Democratic presidential nomination, has been saying for weeks that Hillary Clinton should take a stand on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), the 12-nation trade agreement currently under negotiation.

This week, ahead of Friday's House vote on giving the president trade promotion authority, Sanders turned up the heat on Clinton.

"I frankly don't understand how you could be a major candidate for president of the United States -- Hillary Clinton, or anybody else -- and not have an opinion on that issue," he said in an interview with Bloomberg's Al Hunt on the Charlie Rose Show on Thursday. Asked if Clinton's stance amounts to a "cop out," Sanders said yes.
