Teacher: I Don’t Teach Shakespeare Because He’s White

The Washington Post has published a guest article by a California teacher arguing that American high school students shouldn’t read Shakespeare because he’s a dead, white man. Dana Dusbiber, who teaches English in Sacramento, says she avoids Hamlet and all the rest because her minority students shouldn’t be expected to study a ”a long-dead, British guy” (Dusbiber herself is white). And while Shakespeare is widely regarded as the premier writer of the English language, able to timelessly portray themes central to the human experience, Dusbiber says he only is regarded that way because “some white people” ordained it and he can easily be replaced.

POLICE SHOOT MIDDLE SCHOOL KIDS DURING 'TEMS' ACTIVE SHOOTER DRILLS WITH EMS AND FIREFIGHTERS

The Explorers program, a coeducational affiliate of the Boy Scouts of America that began 60 years ago, is training thousands of young people in skills used to confront terrorism, illegal immigration and escalating border violence — an intense ratcheting up of one of the group’s longtime missions to prepare youths for more traditional jobs as police officers and firefighters. (Germany had the Hitler Youth program, which bears a striking resemblance to the "explorer program")

The Explorer training, which leaders say is not intended to be applied outside the simulated Explorer setting, can involve chasing down illegal border crossers as well as more dangerous situations that include facing down terrorists and taking out “active shooters.” In a simulation here of a raid on marijuana field, several Explorers were instructed on how to quiet an obstreperous lookout.

Webmaster's Commentary:

If I had kids, I would never have allowed them to go to a school where such a practice was normal.

School to Jail Pipeline for Disabled Kids?

Albuquerque police jailed a middle school special ed student twice because they thought it better to jail disabled kids to than leave them in school, the teenager claims in court.
Sidney Summers, now 18, sued the Albuquerque Police Department and Sgt. Michael Archibeque in Bernalillo County Court, citing two incidents from 2009, when Summers was 12 years old.
Summers claims his arrests and jailings exemplified a culture of discrimination against special education students under Archibeque, who supervised Albuquerque's school resource officers at the time. Archibeque is the only individual defendant.
In his June 10 lawsuit, Summers says he was arrested for childhood temper outbursts in which no one was injured.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This is so wrong, on so many levels, that I hardly know where to start.

I have personally worked with special needs kids at a private facility, and know firsthand that nothing reaches these children like love, kindness, and structure. Jailing special needs kids sends absolutely the wrong message, as does not dealing with kids who torment kids like this, and think it is perfectly fine.

This is a really lousy policy on the part of the Albuquerque police, and needs to be changed, STAT!!

Jews, Communists and Genocidal Hate in “Whiteness Studies”

As a general rule, you can be fairly certain that any academic discipline that contains the word ‘studies’ within its title can be immediately dismissed on an intellectual level as involving very little studying and a great deal of leftist indoctrination. The relatively new discipline of ‘Whiteness Studies,’ however, is vastly more toxic than the average contemporary effusions of the bloated academic corpus.

Some UK schools are using 'anti-radicalization software' to spy on kids, because terrorism

A child is never too young to start on the path toward violent jihad — at least according to the logic of Britain's Counter-Terrorism and Security Act of 2015. Luckily, there's an app for that.

UK schools have an important role to play under the new law, which will start being enforced on July 1. In the language of the act, headmasters, teachers, and other staff must "have due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism." I

Press TV-Gilad Atzmon on Steven Salaita, University of Illinois and Jewish Power

A leading academic group has slammed the University of Illinois for refusing to employ a professor over his anti-Israel tweets.
The American Association of University Professors says the decision to withdraw Steven Salaita’s job offer is against the principle of academic freedom. Salaita lost the opportunity over his Twitter posts which exposed Israel’s atrocities in the Gaza Strip. The group has described Salaita’s tweets as expressions of outrage in strong language over the war in Gaza. The University’s chancellor has reacted to the censure, saying it will have repercussions and will be taken seriously.

University of Waterloo offers Beyonce course

Starting this fall, students at the University of Waterloo can take an entire course on the mega superstar, analyzing videos from her fifth and most recent album, simply titled "Beyonce."

Judge orders University of Illinois to release Steven Salaita emails

Illinois Circuit Judge Thomas Difanis today ordered the University of Illinois to release thousands of pages of emails that may cast light on the state institution’s decision to fire Steven Salaita last August.

The decision in the Champaign County Court was a big victory for Salaita, who brought a lawsuit against the university under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).

Difanis rejected the university’s claims that the request would be too burdensome and agreed with Salaita’s lawyers that there was a significant public interest in whether hiring decisions by the university have been unduly influenced by donors.

I’m a Liberal Professor, and My Liberal Students Terrify Me

The academic job market is brutal. Teachers who are not tenured or tenure-track faculty members have no right to due process before being dismissed, and there's a mile-long line of applicants eager to take their place. They don't even have to be formally fired — they can just not get rehired. In this type of environment, boat-rocking isn't just dangerous, it's suicidal, and so teachers limit their lessons to things they know won't upset anybody.

The End of Higher Education as We Know It

The academy is entering a dangerous time. Academics now find themselves entering a time when a more comprehensive politics that deals with the rise of authoritarianism through a variety of related fundamentalisms–economic, religious, political, and educational–is being overlooked as a result of an emerging limited and depoliticizing politics of civility and trauma. This is not meant to suggest that dehumanizing behavior and injurious forms of trauma do not matter and should not be addressed. What is disturbing is when such incidents lose their sense of specificity and connections to wider political and economic forces and become universalized and all-encompassing.

America, The Ponzi Scheme: A Commencement Speech For The Scammed

It couldn’t be a sunnier, more beautiful day to exit your lives -- or enter them -- depending on how you care to look at it. After all, here you are four years later in your graduation togs with your parents looking on, waiting to celebrate. The question is: Celebrate what exactly?

In possibly the last graduation speech of 2015, I know I should begin by praising your grit, your essential character, your determination to get this far. But today, it’s money, not character, that’s on my mind. For so many of you, I suspect, your education has been a classic scam and you’re not even attending a “for profit” college -- an institution of higher learning, that is, officially set up to take you for a ride.

I'm a liberal professor, and my liberal students terrify me

Things have changed since I started teaching. The vibe is different. I wish there were a less blunt way to put this, but my students sometimes scare me — particularly the liberal ones.

Not, like, in a person-by-person sense, but students in general. The student-teacher dynamic has been reenvisioned along a line that's simultaneously consumerist and hyper-protective, giving each and every student the ability to claim Grievous Harm in nearly any circumstance, after any affront, and a teacher's formal ability to respond to these claims is limited at best.

The College Bureaucracy: How Education Forgot the Students and Became A Business

Students attend college to pursue their interests, broaden their intellectual horizons and make headway toward a career. While this is made difficult due to the amount of debt that many must saddle in order to earn a degree, there is also another, much stealthier problem as well: the college bureaucracy. University bureaucracies absorb large amounts of funding and undermine the alleged goal of college, which is to provide an education. But they also signal something more sinister: the neo-liberalization of education, now viewed as a business.

Fury after primary pupils are asked to complete radicalisation-seeking surveys

Parents of children as young as nine have reacted angrily after schools in an east London borough asked pupils to complete surveys designed to provide clues to possible radicalisation. Waltham Forest council has been piloting the scheme in five primary schools with large Muslim intakes. The questionnaire, circulated among year 6 pupils, asks how much they trust the police and people from another race or religion.

They are also asked whether they agree that it is acceptable to marry someone from outside their race or religion and whether women are just as good as men at work. Another question asks if the pupils believe their religion is the only correct one. About 22% of the population in Waltham Forest, one of the most deprived local authorities in England, are Muslim.

Webmaster's Commentary:

A short memo to the Ministry of Education in the UK: this is not rocket science, and you are looking in absolutely the wrong direction here.

What causes radicalisation is realizing that a foreign country is taking advantage of natural resources in a country, to which the invading country has absolutely no moral right.

What causes radicalization is watching a relative, a toddler, get blown to bits by a drone bombing, and understanding that this dead, innocent child is considered simply "collateral damage" by the government doing the drone bombing.

What causes radicalization is not being able to peacefully advocate for change, because the government in power (let's say in Bahrain) is supported by both the British and US governments, where the Bahraini government will have your tear gassed or hit with rubber bullets for your efforts; then, the first responders who tried to keep you from dying are tortured into confessing, and also jailed.

The late President Kennedy said it best: "When peaceful revolution is impossible, violent revolution is inevitable."

Don’t hold your breath for Millennials to purchase homes: 6 years into a recovery and Millennials are still moving into parental homes at record levels.

I ran into a successful Millennial couple this month and we had a good discussion about housing. They are in their 30s and still do not have any kids. Both are career driven and ultimately would like to buy a home. They have the money to buy but just don’t want to. What they brought up was interesting and they mentioned some of their peers had to resort to moving back in with mom and dad. What they brought up simply reflects a “new normal” for Millennials and that is many are simply not eager to purchase a home. Many are delaying marriage, have smaller families (if any), and a large number are carrying sizable student debt. All of this has caused a low demand for housing and alternative choices to buying a home especially for this cohort of Americans. In California we have a high number of adults living at home largely because of the cost of rents and home prices. Yet this trend encompasses the entire country. Higher home prices and rents have only exacerbated this movement.

Wrongfully treating academic debate as anti-Semitism

The principle of academic freedom at our universities is under attack by those seeking to shield Israel from criticism by silencing dissent, shutting down discussion and imposing a stifling atmosphere of intimidation at the University of California, in particular.

A coordinated set of petitions, including a letter signed by 57 rabbis, asks UC administrators to adopt the State Department's definition of anti-Semitism as a means to "accurately identify" and "publicly condemn" it in campus debate, protest and discussion. Inflation acts as a pickpocket on the wallets of working Americans: Young Americans take a big hit given the small weight given to tuition in the CPI.

Inflation is a very real thing. The Fed continues to downplay the impacts of inflation to support their ongoing easy monetary policy. What this has created is an inflated stock market and hot money chasing into other asset classes including real estate. This wouldn’t be such an issue if your typical working American family was benefitting. Instead, it is assisting larger financial institutions and big investors to pick up assets in all segments of the real economy and consequently crowds out regular buyers. Inflation is the end outcome of all this kind of action.

Here are the 10 most absurd reasons why small children have been arrested in America

At this point, it’s hard to be surprised by the extreme punitiveness of America’s criminal justice system. One thing that can still shock, though, is how police manhandle actual children. Not only is treatment of children severe (police in Arizona recently mulled over the possibility of charging an 8-year-old as an adult), but our system is undiscerning; we can, and do, arrest kids for virtually anything, including completely normal childhood misbehavior. In fact, many youth, particularly people of color from low-income households, come into contact with their first handcuffs in school. Here are some of the stranger examples of this depressingly American practice.
