Whether you’re in the search of a Boho vintage dress, a unique belt buckle, or maybe even a cute vase for your collection of trinkets, any flea market is the place to be. Everyone is looking for their own great deal. But one English lady unknowingly picked out something quite remarkable at a “car boot sale” at West Middlesex Hospital, London, in the 1980s. What she believed to be a piece of costume jewelry made the headlines 30 years later.

It was just a regular Sunday sale when the woman bought a ring she fancied for £10 ($13). She wore that ring for the next 30 years, shopping, working, running errands, until she discovered, to her astonishment, it was actually set with a 26-carat diamond that was cut in the 19th century.

Clever Marketing: Ancient Greek prostitutes wore sandals that printed a message in the ground reading, “Follow me”

Prostitution was and is part of almost all cultures around the world, ancient and modern.

The history of prostitution is a very complex one, and it cannot be simplified and understood only as the result of poor lifestyle choices or the product of unfortunate circumstances.

The earliest data on prostitution dates back to the days of the Sumerian culture in ancient Mesopotamia where the profession thrived along with the growth of the marketplaces that attracted the traders and sailors.

The Sumerian goddess Inanna, better known as Ishtar, one of the most prominent cults worshiped across the Middle East was, among other things, a patron of prostitutes and public houses.

Prostitution was also part of Ancient Greek society where it was reasonably accepted. Between the 8th and the 5th centuries BC, prostitution was legal in Athens, and like any other occupation, everyone in the business had to pay taxes on their income. There were two types of sex workers, pornai, and hetairai.

The bizarre story of the dragon’s rib in the cathedral of Atessa

Among the religious artifacts found in the Italian city of Atessa is a long and rather large bone. Kept in a church, it is rumored to be the rib of a dragon that once terrorized the area.

While the idea is fanciful, there is an exciting tale of bravery and blood-letting behind it, one that would make Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin himself sit up and take notice.

Back in the mists of time, there were two villages called Ate and Tixa. Each stood on a hill and between them was a valley, otherwise known as the dragon’s lair.

Much like the character of Smaug in The Hobbit, this arrogant flame spewer dominated the land. If the villagers were going to rid themselves of its presence, they would need help.

Enter Leucio, otherwise known as the Bishop of Brindisi. He captured and slayed the beast single-handed, doing it by the sheer power of his faith.

Bardot grew up in an upper-middle-class Roman Catholic observant home When she was seven she was admitted to the Cours Hattemer, a private school. Brigitte’s mother also enrolled Brigitte’s younger sister, Marie-Jeanne (born 5 May 1938), in dance. Marie-Jeanne eventually gave up dancing lessons and did not tell her mother, whereas Brigitte concentrated on ballet. In 1947, Bardot was accepted to the Conservatoire de Paris. "Someone took my track, added vocals and guitar to make their own track, and uploaded it to YouTube, but I got the copyright infringement notice!"

Osamu Tezuka, “father of Manga,” wanted to help Japanese overcome depression over World War II

In recent decades, manga comics have gained worldwide popularity and have achieved a dedicated and sometimes extended fan base. In fact, many western comics use elements of manga-style, and many contemporary cartoonists and animators use the Simhon inspiration from the vibrant and dynamic style of Japanese contemporary cartoons.

Its roots are centuries old. Although in the mid-1950s, modern manga comics gained popularity in Japan, but in the late 19th century the rules for the creation of manga comics were established. At the beginning of the 18th century, the word manga is related to comics in Japan, and stylish elements used by manga artists are present in Japanese art since the 12th century.

The modern style of manga comics was developed and popularized by Osamu Tezuka, nowadays called "Father of manga" and "Lord of manga". Tezuka was born in 1928 and started writing comics in elementary school.

American Revolutionary Song: Chester - William Billings

Chester was a patriotic anthem composed by William Billings and sung during the American Revolutionary War. Billings wrote the first version of the song for his 1770 songbook The New England Psalm Singer, and made improvements for the version in his The Singing Master's Assistant (1778). It is the latter version that is best known today.

The curious title of the song reflects a common practice of Billings's day, in which tunes were labeled with (often arbitrarily chosen) place names. Billings's song evidently has little more to do with any particular town named Chester than his hymn tune Africa has to do with Africa. With identifiable names for compositions, performers could select different lyrics to sing with the music without creating confusion.
This song would rival Yankee Doodle as the unofficial anthem of the rebel colonies

American Revolutionary War Song:Ballad of the Green Mountain Boys

Lyrics:

Ho--all to the borders! Vermonters, come down,
With your britches of deerskin and jackets of brown;
With your red woolen caps and your moccasins come,
To the gathering summons of trumpet and drum.
Come down with your rifle!
Let gray wolf and fox
Howl on in the shadow of primitive rocks;
Let bear feed securely from pig-pen and stall;
Here's two-legged game for your powder and ball.
Then cheer, cheer, the green mountaineer, then cheer, cheer the green mountaineer

On the south came the Hessians, our land to police;
And armed for the battle while canting of peace;
On our east came the British, the red coated band
To hang up our leaders and eat up our land.
Ho--all to the rescue! For Satan shall work
No gain for the legions of Hampshire and York!
They claim our possessions--the pitiful knaves--
The tribute we pay shall be prisons and graves!
Then cheer, cheer, the green mountaineer, then cheer, cheer the green mountaineer

Poem for a New American Century

Go Fourth
by a female Faust

Land isn't free, but it sure is divisible
But the hand of the market is visible
O say can you say if you see something you ought

Not so brave when it comes to the rent
Who can save up what's already spent
O say can you see why this was all you were taught

Truth is spoken to Power that fears it
It gets louder when nobody hears it
Over not being heard soon enough Power gets fought

No one knows it but everyone hides it
No one can tell you why nobody tries it
(But everyone wonders why no one gets caught)

- Since you can bet that they'll never be telling
Never mind finding out just what they're selling
Better ask what it was that you bought

The Berners Street Hocks - The Greatest Joke of the 19th Century

Theodore Hook was born on September 22, 1788 in Charlotte Street, London. He was the son of popular songs James Hook.

He was educated in private schools and he spent a year at Harrow School. Theodor was only 16 years old when he started working closely with his father on music, which included the return of successful soldiers, a comic opera which was very popular with the public.

The return of a soldier brought him £ 50 when he was only sixteen. During the next five or six years, they built many farms and melodramas.

For the things that Hook was most remembered, among them was the love of fans, practical jokes and fraud.

Spotify Is Issuing Refunds to Subscribers Who Felt Spammed by Drake

Spotify is now refunding at least some subscribers who felt spammed by ‘Drake ads’ this past weekend.

Drake is laughing all the way to the bank. Spotify, on the other hand, may have some cleaning up to do. Now, a highly-vocal group of angry subscribers are demanding refunds, and it looks like Spotify is giving it to at least some of them.

The issue isn’t that Drake’s Scorpion was getting promoted on Spotify. It’s that Spotify was pushing this album into every nook and cranny of the platform, and effectively spamming users who had little interest in the artist.

Not everyone likes Drake or rap. Hence the irritation.

Terrifying stories from tourists in Mexico continue a year after mysterious drowning

A year after the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel brought to light a suspicious drowning and other troubling accounts from tourists vacationing at upscale all-inclusive resorts in Mexico, the stories continue to surface.

In one recent case, a 51-year-old mother and her two adult daughters blacked out simultaneously after drinking a shot of tequila. In another, a couple in their mid-60s vomited and blacked out after two margaritas. And in yet another, a woman from Los Angeles — who had not been drinking — was taken to jail for trying to help a woman who was blacking out in the pool.

Since early July of 2017, the Journal Sentinel has heard from more than 170 travelers describing injuries, illnesses and deaths after drinking alcohol at resorts and in tourist towns in Mexico.

EXCLUSIVE: Documents reveal Pentagon censorship of military suicides, trauma in Hollywood

A 2016 study found that 20 US veterans kill themselves every day. Department of Defence (DOD )statistics show that the suicide rate among veterans is around twice the rate in the non-military population. An analysis in 2017 said that a suicide attempt in a military unit makes other attempts more likely, and that 20% of all the suicides in the US are by military veterans.

These brutal statistics testify to the futility of our post-9/11 wars, as well as the horrors inflicted on those employed to fight these wars on the ground.

What has never previously been reported is the extent to which the Pentagon’s entertainment liaison offices manipulate and censor films, TV shows and documentaries to try to downplay or erase the widespread problem of military PTSD and suicide.

“Last Man Standing” Cast Gets Shakeup at Fox

When Tim Allen’s hit sitcom “Last Man Standing” was abruptly canceled by ABC News, many suspected that the decision was political, given the conservative themes common on the show. Ironically, Allen actually warned about the consequences of publicly supporting Trump in Hollywood during those remarks.

The film, titled Fahrenheit 11/9, is a play on the title of his 2004 documentary about former President George W Bush. However, this title references the day Trump won the presidency in 2016.

Speaking on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the liberal filmmaker said the film explores 'how the hell we got in this situation and how we're going to get out of it.'

During his Thursday night interview, Moore spoke of the president and said: 'Look, we’re in deep, deep trouble here.'

'He plans to be re-elected, he loves the term ''president for life.'' The only way that we're going to stop this is eventually we're all going to have to put our bodies on the line,' he said.

NZ Government mulls reining in ballooning Hollywood film subsidies NZ$600 million

The New Zealand taxpayer has forked out nearly $600 million to Hollywood producers since 2010 to support the Wellington-dominated film industry, and despite commissioning numerous studies the Government is unclear whether this represents money well spent.

The subsidy scheme, originally conceived to facilitate filming of the Lord of the Rings, has steadily increased over the past two decades and now sees mostly overseas producers paid subsidies of up to a quarter of production costs - resulting in $161m paid to the makers of the wildly profitable Hobbit trilogy and $12m for animation on Alvin and the Chipmunks 4.

It also appears $3m of the $31m paid to makers of Ghost in the Shell, a critically derided science fiction bomb filmed in Wellington in 2016, was used to subsidise the A-list salary of starlet Scarlett Johansson.

The Government is now looking at ways to limit taxpayer exposure to a high-profile film subsidy scheme.

China Blocks HBO After John Oliver Compares Xi To Pooh

?China has blocked HBO after host John Oliver devoted a considerable amount of time criticizing President Xi Jinping and China's notorious crackdowns on dissent, at a time when Xi is trying to rebrand himself.

In addition to calling out China over human rights violations and various forms of propaganda, Oliver pointed out that Xi is very sensitive Winnie the Pooh comparisons, which Xi has censored due to Chinese social media users using Pooh memes to mock him over the removal of presidential term limits.

BEXALERT: Why Do We Underplay the Links Between Cannabis and Psychosis?

Big Pharma and Big Alcohol and the Judicial/Police/Prison Complex are in one big panic!
I post this as a classic example of propaganda and disinformation.

What is really needed in dealing with cannabis is a “tobacco moment”, as with cigarettes 50 years ago, when a majority of people became convinced that smoking might give them cancer and kill them. Since then the number of cigarette smokers in Britain has fallen by two-thirds.

A depressing aspect of the present debate about cannabis is that so many proponents of legalisation or decriminalisation have clearly not taken on board that the causal link between cannabis and psychosis has been scientifically proven over the past ten years, just as the connection between cancer and cigarettes was proved in the late 1940s and 1950s.

Morgan Freeman Speaks Out Against CNN Article Accusing Him Of Sexual Harassment- Demands Apology

Unlike cases like Kevin Spacey or Bill Cosby, Morgan Freeman isn’t hiding from the truth, he’s fighting for it. He claims that these alleged incidents never took place and that the main woman’s accusations may have been fueled by racism or a desire to advance her career in Hollywood. Freeman’s lawyer has said that if CNN doesn’t at the very least retract their article and offer an apology, he’ll pursue a lawsuit against the company famous for its liberal bias.

Freeman, who has praised CNN in the past for their coverage of Donald Trump, may now be reconsidering his whole political stance. Some have pointed fingers and labeled Freeman a hypocrite for only going after CNN now that he’s in the hot seat, but sometimes that’s what it takes to realize you’ve been played.

ABC Confirms ‘Roseanne’ Will Return to the Air, Without Roseanne Barr

ABC has made it official: The high-rated “Roseanne” is too good to give up on, and it will return to the air as “The Conners.”

Why the name change? Because the original show’s star, Roseanne Barr, will not be involved. Barr will have no creative or financial stake in the new production.

As TMZ first reported, the negotiations were being finalized and the only delay involved negotiations with Barr herself.

All the other actors have confirmed they will be returning to the show which was TV’s highest-rated sitcom in more than three years until it was abruptly canceled after Barr sent a racial tweet to former Obama White House advisor Valerie Jarrett on May 29.

Peter Fonda’s Disturbing and Unforgiving History of Defending Child Rape: It’s Not Like The Rapist of 13-yr-old “Killed Anyone”

We travel back to 2009 when Fonda snapped after Roman Polanski was arrested in Switzerland on a 1978 US warrant for raping a 13-year-old girl.

Yes. 13.

Polanski, a Hollywood hero, plead guilty and jumped bail, fleeing to Paris, France.

But it was Fonda, who has a daughter of his own, who has often defended Polanski’s sex with a child, once calling his arrest an outrage in a rant and said it’s not like Polanski killed the girl.

What? This is your brain on Peter Fonda, kids.

From 2009:

Peter Fonda has joined the growing list of Hollywood rape apologists, telling a Zurich radio station, “we should have been celebrating the arrest of Osama bin Laden and not the arrest of Polanski.”

Wait a minute, they caught bin Laden?!?

Nope, Fonda’s just being totally nonsensical. Speaking of which, he might just win the award for most galling justification of child rape, not to mention fleeing the country before sentencing, I’ve yet seen.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Normally I do not do entertainment news here at What Really Happened, but Peter Fonda has really pissed me off!

Donald Trump Jr. Torches Peter Fonda Over Vile Attack on 12-Year-Old Barron

Donald Trump Jr. hit back at actor Peter Fonda late Wednesday morning after the Oscar-nominee publicly called for a mob to kidnap his 12-year-old brother, Barron Trump, and throw him in a cage with pedophiles.

“You’re clearly a sick individual and everyone is an internet badass but rather than attack an 11 year old like a bully and a coward why don’t you pick on someone a bit bigger.,” Don Jr. closed with “LMK,” which means “let me know.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

Bridge: US Liberals Are Clinically Insane And Care Nothing For The American People

The mass hysteria that swept across Liberal America, like one giant tear tsunami, following Hillary Clinton’s ‘surprise’ loss in the 2016 presidential election has reached a new level of madness and can now be described as a deep-seated psychosis.

There are some understandable reasons for the Left’s collective mental breakdown. Briefly, ‘Russiagate’ is disintegrating into a burlesque theater of the absurd, while Trump – from jump-starting the Heartland’s industrial sector, to making peace with a nuclear-armed dictator, to ‘winning’ the World Cup – is on a serious roll. If the momentum continues, it may give the Republicans a crucial victory in November congressional midterms. The Democrats, acutely aware as to what is at stake yet unable to stop Trump, are showing a side of their character that can be best described as treacherous. And in order to see the symptoms of a disintegrating Democratic Party one only need look at the US entertainment industry.

THE PRO-WAR MEDIA DESERVE CRITICISM, NOT SAINTHOOD

The media nowadays are busy congratulating themselves for their vigorous criticism of Donald Trump. To exploit that surge of sanctimony, Hollywood producer Steven Spielberg rushed out The Post, a movie depicting an epic press battle with the Nixon administration. Critics raved over the film, which the New York Post enthusiastically labeled “journalism porn of the highest order.” Boston Public Radio station WBUR called it the “most fun you’ll ever have at a civics lesson.”

Spielberg, touting his movie, claimed that “the free press is a crusader for truth,” But the media hoopla around The Post is akin to geezers boasting of having shown moments of courage when they were almost 50 years younger.

Police suspect Hollywood mogul was go-between for PM, newspaper chief — report

Police investigators reportedly have evidence that Hollywood mogul Arnon Milchan, suspected of giving bribes to Benjamin Netanyahu in one case, also acted as a middleman in a suspected illegal deal discussed by the prime minister and Yedioth Ahronoth publisher Arnon Mozes in a separate case.

The Tel Aviv district prosecution believes that Netanyahu “systematically” demanded benefits worth about NIS 1 million ($282,000) from Milchan in so-called Case 1000, public broadcaster Kan reported last month.

According to a report Tuesday by Hadashot TV news, police have evidence that Milchan was also involved in Case 2000, which involves a suspected illicit quid-pro-quo deal between Netanyahu and Mozes that would have seen the prime minister hobble a rival daily, the Sheldon Adelson-backed Israel Hayom, in exchange for more favorable coverage from Yedioth.

I Remember When America Was A Free Country

I remember when America was a free country. You could get on an airliner without an ID. Driving licenses didn’t even have photos. If a friend was coming through your city on a flight and had a few hours layover, you could meet them inside the airport for lunch or dinner. You could meet friends, children, and relatives at the gate or see them off at the gate. Parents could actually put children on the plane and grandparents could take them off.

Your flight ticket was good at any airline. If something happened to your flight or you missed it, you could use the ticket on another airline going to the same place. On international flights you were permitted two free stopovers prior to your destination. If you were going to Athens, Greece, for example, you could first visit Paris and then Rome. It worked both ways, over and back. So one air ticket, six cities.
