Worst nightmare for EU as French election could be between TWO candidates wanting Frexit

THE European Union (EU) is facing catastrophe as anti-Brussels parties gain popularity in the French Presidential election.

Far-left candidate Jean-Luc Melenchon is enjoying a surprise rise in the polls to join Front National leader Marine Le Pen as a feasible anti-EU choice in the contest.

After weeks of polls predicting a showdown between Mrs Le Pen and Europhile socialist Emmanual Macron, Mr Melenchon has had a sudden surge in the polls after performing well in the television debates in the run up to the unpredictable election.

The Communist-backed candidate wants to pull France out of the EU as well as the military alliance NATO.

If the more left-wing supporters from candidate Emmanuel Macron switch to Mr Melenchon, a Le Pen-Melenchon second round is increasingly likely.

Le Pen says France not responsible for WWII round up of Jews

Far-right presidential candidate Marine Le Pen denied Sunday that the French state was responsible for the wartime round-up of Jews at a Paris cycling track who were then sent to Nazi death camps.

Former President Jacques Chirac and current leader Francois Hollande have both apologised for the role French police played in the round-up of more than 13,000 Jews at the Vel d'Hiv cycling track which was ordered by Nazi officers in 1942.

But Le Pen told the LCI television channel on Sunday: "I don't think France is responsible for the Vel d'Hiv."

She added: "I think that generally speaking if there are people responsible, it's those who were in power at the time. It's not France."

Emmanuel Macron made the blunder during a whirlwind tour of France's overseas territories.

"My first response is a call for calm, because blocking the airport runways and takeoffs - and sometimes even blocking off the function of the island itself is not the response to the situation."

The error - in case you missed it - was that French Guiana isn't an island at all but a coastal block of land in the northern reaches of southern America

US Will Keep Ground Troops in Libya

In a press briefing at the Pentagon today, African Command leader Gen. Thomas Waldhauser announced that the US intends to keep ground troops in Libya for the foreseeable future to support “friendly forces,” and to “degrade” the ISIS forces that remain in the country.

Waldhauser did not specify how many US troops are in Libya now, or how many will stay, but did estimate that there were less than 200 ISIS fighters left in Libya. The US had announced the end of the anti-ISIS campaign in Libya back in December, but never fully withdrew from the country.

The US forces were in Libya trying to help the “unity” government defeat ISIS in the city of Sirte. US officials repeatedly claimed the city was totally surrounded, and that no ISIS fighters would get away, though when the fighting finally ended, a substantial number of ISIS fighters did in fact get away.

She went on to claim it was time to drop trade sanctions against Russia, which were introduced by the EU after Putin moved troops to annex the Ukrainian province of Crimea.

Ms Le Pen told RT: “The priority is to allow cooperation between Russia and France, not only in culture but also in business and strategic cooperation such as in the fight against ISIS and also in energy."

Leftist candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon stated that he was going to become the last President of the Fifth Republic and initiate the reforms that would create the Sixth French Republic. A survey conducted by Elabe sociological institute immediately after the debate showed that Mélenchon took the second place on his credibility, losing only to Emmanuel Macron and leaving all other three contenders for presidency behind. Macron seemed credible only to 29 percent of the polled, while leftist Mélenchon - to 20 percent.

France 'ceased to be a fully sovereign nation' — Le Pen

France has ceased to be a fully sovereign nation, leader of the French National Front political Party, Marine Le Pen, said at a meeting of Russia’s State Duma (lower house of parliament) International Affairs Committee on Friday. "The fact is that at the moment the problem we are facing can be summed up in the following way: France has ceased to be a fully sovereign country," she said. According to Le Pen, this stems from the fact that France has "delegated some of its powers, at least those concerning trade negotiations and diplomatic functions, to the European Union. "The EU is behaving like an opponent of the idea, which we are upholding in our policy," she stressed. "I hope France will regain its sovereignty, and there will be no reasons whatsoever to prevent resumption of the Russian-French relations so that they could reach the cruise speed necessary for their development," the politician stated.
