London Metropolitan Police still uses 35,000 Windows XP computers

Today, the Metropolitan Police Force illustrated just how integral Windows XP still is to many workplace IT systems. Responding to a Freedom of Information Request issued by technology news site Motherboard, the Force said: "We have currently got 35,640 Desktop and Laptop computers running Windows XP across all departments [within the force]."

The force has not yet responded to follow-up questions from Motherboard and has not issued any expected date for when it will stop using XP. In the meantime, the systems are vulnerable to un-patched security loopholes and can be more easily exploited by attackers than newer, generally-supported operating systems like Windows 7 and Windows 8.1.

Rail firms under fire for planning fare hikes of up to 87% that are due to come in just ten days after the election despite main parties vowing price freeze

Passengers travelling from Charlbury, the Oxfordshire station nearest to his constituency home, can currently purchase an off-peak return to London costing £33.30.

This allows them to leave at 9.42am, outside the morning peak, but return on one of the four services that go from London during the evening peak period.

Former Director of Public Prosecutions was 'never informed' of Lord Janner child sex abuse allegations

The former Director of Public Prosecutions says he was “not told” about the allegations of historic child sex abuse against former Labour MP Lord Janner.

Speaking on BBC’s Today programme, Lord Macdonald QC says the regional crown prosecution service in Leicestershire didn’t refer the case to him at the time.

Lord Greville Janner, 86, was investigated between 1991 and 2007 by three separate police forces, accused of using his position as an MP to abuse vulnerable young boys at a children’s home.

The cases allegedly occurred in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, while Lord Janner was MP for Leicester North West and then Leicester West.

Why has petrol risen despite oil price fall? Anger as drivers count the cost on the forecourt

Motorists’ groups reacted with anger last night as it emerged that the cost of petrol was rising again – soon after a fall in world oil prices.

Campaigners said drivers were being ‘fleeced’ by oil firms and high fuel duty.

For months, the cost of fuel fell to just 113.42p for diesel and 106.39p per litre of unleaded. But the cost of filling a tank with petrol has risen by almost £4 and £3 for diesel.

The rise comes despite a dip in world oil prices in March, from a high of $60 a barrel to $54, triggered by competition between the US and other nations.
