Sec Def: US Must Stay in Iraq After ISIS War

For a war which President Obama promised would involve “no boots on the ground,” the ISIS war in Iraq has involved a substantial deployment of ground troops, some 6,000 by most reckonings. Even as officials present ISIS as nearly defeated in Iraq, the US military presence looks to be more or less permanent.

That was the message from Defense Secretary Ash Carter, who insisted that ISIS was heading for “lasting defeat,” but that the US and the rest of its coalition need to keep their troops engaged militarily in Iraq even after this, presenting this as a “sustained” operation.

Carter’s talk of an “enduring presence” in Iraq appears to be in keeping with a lot of officials in the Obama Administration, though with just a month left in office the decision on US troop levels “post-ISIS” will be left to President-elect Donald Trump.

Webmaster's Commentary:

A permanent US presence in Iraq?!?

Hey, I think that will go just as "swimmingly" as is the current US/NATO occupation of Afghanistan....some 15 years on!!!

ISIS MOVING HEAVY FIGHTING EQUIPMENT FROM IRAQ TO SYRIA

Reports have emerged that ISIS started withdrawing their heavy military equipment from from the towns of al-Qa’im, Rawah and Anah in Iraq’s Anbar province, to the Syrian desert city of Raqqa, which is also the terrorist groups defacto capital. Much of the equipment is rocket launchers, battle tanks and armored vehicles. This comes at a time when Mosul in Iraq’s Nineveh province is completely cut off from Syria and the terrorist group being battered by Iraqi forces, including the Kurdish Peshmerga and Shi’ite militias.

Pentagon Again Under-Reports Civilians Killed in Iraq, Syria Airstrikes

The latest in the occasional Pentagon statements on civilian deaths in the air war in Iraq and Syria has claimed 54 civilians slain between March 31 and October 22, continuing the trend of official figures being massively lower than those reported in the media.

This puts the official death toll at 173 civilians for the entire air war, which is far short of estimates from most groups, which put the death toll far higher over the course of the conflict. Amnesty International put the figure at around 300, and others have suggested it was in excess of 500. The Pentagon often declines to investigate reports of civilian deaths, arguing that they are “not credible.”

Even when they do finally manage to get the killings into their reports, the tolls are often dramatically lower than the evidence suggests. A July 18 airstrike north of the Syrian city of Manbij, for instance, was finally included in the report this time around, with “up to 24” killed.

UN: Iraq Troop Deaths Soar With Mosul Invasion

Between Iraq’s military, militias, and the Kurdish Peshmerga, some 50,000 troops invaded the area around Mosul. The Peshmerga is reporting that they lost a large chunk of fighters by themselves, with 1,600 killed and some 10,000 wounded since late October.

That of course is only a fraction of the overall death toll for the month of November, as some 2,227 ISIS fighters were also killed. Among civilians, the UN only counted 926 killed, but the figure is actually several hundred higher, with the UN continuing to exclude deaths in Anbar from their official figure.

All told, that puts the death toll at 5,719 for Iraq in November, which is roughly in line with October. the November figures show a six-fold increase in Iraqi troop deaths, with ISIS casualties on the decline.

Webmaster's Commentary:

These horrific numbers are the "legacy" of President Bush's war and occupation of Iraq.

I have to believe that there is a special place in hell for people who lie to get their countries involved in pre-emptive wars of conquest.

Trump Ponders Petraeus for Senior Job

The news that President-elect Donald Trump called in disgraced retired Gen. David Petraeus for a job interview as possible Secretary of State tests whether Trump’s experience in hosting “The Celebrity Apprentice” honed his skills for spotting an incompetent phony or not.

Does Trump need more data than the continuing bedlam in Iraq and Afghanistan to understand that one can earn a Princeton PhD by writing erudite-sounding drivel about “counterinsurgency” and still flunk war?

In 2007, Adm. William Fallon, commander of CENTCOM with four decades of active-duty experience behind him, quickly took the measure of Petraeus, who was one of his subordinates while implementing a “surge” of over 30,000 U.S. troops into Iraq.

The Hidden Communist History of the Neo-Conservatives (“Neo Cons”)

Neo-conservatism fully began to rear its ugly head in the 1990’s when they thoroughly infiltrated the once patriotic and pro-America Republican party.

It is therefore incumbent upon each and every single patriotic American who cares about the future of their country (especially federal, state, and local law enforcement and prosecutor offices) to immediately begin to identify, isolate, marginalize, investigate, indict, arrest, prosecute, and incarcerate all Neo-Conservatives as an internal and national security threat to the welfare of the United States of America.

The Lie of the 21st Century: How Mainstream Media “Fake News” Led to the U.S. Invasion of Iraq

Just to be clear, there are a number of websites that do spread misinformation including those in the alternative media, but it is fair to say that they never have caused the deaths of millions of people like The New York Times when it comes to U.S. foreign policy. A recent example is the U.S. led war against Iraq in 2003. After the September 11th attacks, the George W. Bush administration made a false accusation that the Iraq government had Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs) which led to a U.S. invasion eventually toppling Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. The U.S. led war turned out to be a calculated plan by The Project for the New American Century (PNAC), a neo-conservative think-tank who wrote the secretive blueprint called ‘Rebuilding America’s Defenses: Strategies, Forces And Resources For A New Century’ to remove Saddam Hussein and the Ba’ath party from power. The blueprint was originally written for the neocon lunatics who served under then-President George W.

Webmaster's Commentary:

So, the New York Times, aided and abetted by Judith Miller, became the Bush Administration's "Ministry of Propaganda" to "sell" the Iraq war to the American people on a package of lies and disinformation.

And they have the nerve, and effrontery, to label the entire independent media as purveyors of "fake news"?!?!

How bloody dare they, after laying the propaganda groundwork for a war in which over 4,000 Americans, and over half a million Iraqis have died, accuse the independent media of lying, and/or colluding with the Russians?!?

Folks, this is collective desperation on the cusp of madness; they cannot "sell" their poison anymore to a war-weary, and war-skeptical American public, so they are attempting to suppress those voices in the alternative media who ARE telling the truth, the best they can.

And I consider WRH to be in great company with those other sites listed in the WaPo article about alleged "fake news", because I know that the people who run them are people of moral integrity, and clarity.

And thank you, WaPo, for your bellicose, hubristic screed against the truth tellers; it means we are making a difference in the way people and getting their news, and responding to it, and that is the best possible news all of us could be receiving at this critical transition point for this country!!

Car bomb kills over 80 people south of Iraqi capital

A car bomb has reportedly exploded south of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, killing more than 80 people, among them Shia pilgrims.

According to security sources, a truck loaded with explosives went off on Thursday at a gas station in the Shomali village in the suburbs of the city of al-Hilla, located 120 kilometers (75 miles) southeast of the capital Baghdad and around 80 kilometers (50 miles) from Karbala.

Reports say there have been several Iranian nationals among the victims.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This is pretty horrific, and just seems to never end, now, in Iraq.

Such incidents rarely happened under Saddam Hussein's watch.

Fall and Rise of the Forgotten ‘Deplorables’

We’re in for a few surprises, for better or worse...

As might be anticipated, in the wake of Trump’s historic victory — a win that for all sorts of reasons has shaken the Beltway establishment and beyond to its core, and one that political junkies will be fixating on for years — there’s been much handwringing about how so many folks got the outcome so wrong. All of this has been accompanied by the obligatory hyperventilating and existential angst about what Trump’s election portends for the future.

Tensions Mount in Northern Iraq, PM Insists Kurds Must Give Seized Territory Back

Since early in the ISIS war, there has been a suspicion that its resolution within Iraq is just going to lead into yet another war, this time between the Iraqi government and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). The tensions between those sides are already rising even as the fighting over ISIS’ largest city rages.

Iraq has never been entirely comfortable with autonomous, oil-rich Kurdistan, and the KRG leadership has made public their secessionist ambitions, with their leaders saying that outright independence will be discussed as soon as the ISIS fight is over. Yet the biggest source of tension right now is territory.

On paper, KRG territory consists of an area in northern and northeastern Iraq. Yet during the ISIS war, when Iraqi troops were in full retreat, the Kurdish Peshmerga entered the oil rich city of Kirkuk, and declared it part of KRG territory.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Was this, one has to wonder, the "quid pro quo" of the American government for the Peshmerga's help in fighting ISIS; that in return, they could seize Iraqi territory, and the US government would turn a blind eye to this?!?

It appears that the balkanization of Iraq may well have begun, with this Kurdish move.

As long as the US government controls to whom the oil is sold, and in what denomination, the Kurds most probably have nothing to fear.

UK’s Iraq War Probe Designed To ‘Avoid Blame,’ Whitehall Memos Reveal – Report

The injury into UK’s involvement in the 2003 invasion of Iraq was designed by the government to avoid allocating blame to individuals and departments, memos obtained under the Freedom of Information Act have reportedly revealed.

The papers were made public thanks to Chris Lamb, an FOI campaigner from Bristol, who had won a two-year court battle for the right to access classified memos by government officials relating to the creation of the Chilcot Inquiry. The memos were penned in the four-week period in May and June 2009, the Observer reported.

Former US Intelligence Chief Admits Obama Took “Willful Decision” to Support ISIS Rise

If one was only to read mainstream news in the West, you would probably be inculcated with the myth that Islamic State (ISIS) appeared almost out of thin air and many governments in the Western world have been completely shocked by the rise of this terror group. Perhaps you would correctly blame the 2003 invasion and occupation of Iraq as a major reason why such extreme groups gained power in the region, in addition to blaming certain governments for supposedly marginalizing Sunni’s.

But what most mainstream readers will be miserably ignorant of is the fact that one of the main opposition groups fighting the Bashar al-Assad government in Syria has been ISIS itself, a group that has been trained, funded, aided and armed by NATO countries in collusion with Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Israel (to name a few). This reality has been completely omitted in numerous corporate media publications, once again demonstrating the inept and deceptive nature of mainstream news.

Trump & Woolsey: Was There a Bait-and-Switch?

The day after Trump’s election, Woolsey was interviewed by the CBC and asked about U.S. national security priorities. Woolsey responded that it was necessary “to get straight who our friends and adversaries are.” He asserted that “Israel is our friend,” while he called Iran “the world’s leading terrorist state” and insisted that the nuclear agreement with Iran “is so bad it needs to go.” Tehran reached a deal with world powers (including the U.S.) on its nuclear program in July 2015. The Israel lobby has reportedly been trying to undermine the agreement ever since by linking Iran with ISIS terrorism.

Woolsey also called Russia and North Korea “problem states,” and when asked if a new relationship with Russia could be possible under Trump as president, he answered that it “has to be based on Russian performances, not Russian promises,” adding that “Russia’s got to stop conquering its neighbours, like Ukraine.”

16 US servicemen killed, 27 injured in fighting for Iraq’s Mosul — source

"Over the first two weeks of the ground military operation in Mosul, 16 US servicemen were killed and another 27 were injured. Most instances of death and injuries of servicemen represent the result of hitting a landmine, or coming under artillery or mortar shellings," the source said. There were also cases when servicemen died as a result of weak coordination of actions between aviation and special forces units. "For instance, two special forces members died in the airstrike delivered at Mosul’s outskirts by B-52H US aircraft," the source noted. He stressed that over the two weeks since the start of the military operation, the US-led coalition failed to achieve any considerable success in Mosul. "Liberation of Mosul is considered by outgoing Democrats in the White House as a trump card in pre-election political games, where the victory of Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton is at stake.

Kurds decide to get on US nerves

Falah Bakir, Head of the Kurdistan Regional Government (in Iraq) Department of Foreign Relations, reported, that he had asked for military and humanitarian aid while meeting with the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov. 'We asked for humanitarian aid to render support to refugees, that came to the Iraqi Kurdistan from other regions of the country, as well as from Syria,' Bakir said. The Iraqi Kurds had great relations with the Soviet Union, at the time Primakov headed the Kurdish direction. Masud Barzani (President of the Kurdish autonomy in Iraq)studied in the USSR. Thus, there are some ties. But any deliveries to the Iraqi Kurdistan require agreement with the central Iraqi government in Baghdad. For the moment it's not quite clear what the Kurds are asking for. Mosul Offensive: US Drops One Bomb Every Eight Minutes

During the first three days of the ongoing military operation to win the Iraqi city of Mosul back from Daesh control, the coalition carried out airstrikes at a rate of one bomb every eight minutes.

Iraqi security forces, assisted by the US-led coalition, the People's Mobilization Forces (PMF) and Kurdish fighters are currently focused on liberating Mosul, the second largest city in the country and the last bastion of Daesh militants there.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The carnage here will be catastrophic.

But hey, it's all about what companies control the flow if Iraqi oil, and the currency in which it will be sold, right?!?

And as reported today at TASS.com:

The operation against Islamic State terrorists conducted by the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq’s Mosul in conditions of absolute information blockade has tuned into a medieval massacre, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Sunday. "The operation is being conducted in conditions of absolute information blockade as the coalition provides no reliable information about what is going on there. It is absolutely not clear whether the coalition forces are advancing or retreating, how efficient their tactic is, what are their losses, how many sorties were flown and by whom," she wrote on her Facebook account. Civilians, according to Zakharova, are dying from the actions of both militants and the coalition forces confronting them making a "medieval massacre" of the anti-terrorist operation. The situation is worsened by the lack of systemic approach to evacuation of civilians. "It has turned out that no comprehensive plan for the evacuation of civilians has been elaborated. Nothing like humanitarian corridors has been provided," she stressed. A ground operation to liberate Mosul from terrorists of Islamic State began on October 17. It involves the Iraqi troops, Kurdish units and the US-led coalition. Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city with a population of 1.3 million, has been controlled by Islamic State (a terrorist organization outlawed in Russia) for over two years. According to the Iraqi military, from 5,000 to 6,000 militants are holding the city. On October 31, Iraqi’s forces began assaulting the city. More: http://tass.com/politics/910662

And for the US government, money justifies massacre every time, right?!?

The attack against ISIS in Mosul has stalled, and it would appear to me that 1700 troops will be dispatched to attempt to end the stalemate.

Follow us: @politico on Twitter | Politico on Facebook">Senior military officers say the city in northern Iraq, which has been under Islamic State control since June 2014, will be enveloped in a complex pincer movement from Iraqi military forces battling their way into the city from the southeast and Kurdish units storming the city from the northwest. The military offensive, months in the planning, is now tentatively scheduled to begin sometime in early October, with a final battle for Mosul coming at the end of that month. If Mosul is retaken, it would both mark a major political triumph for Barack Obama and likely benefit his party’s nominee at the polls, Hillary Clinton, undercutting Republican claims that the Obama administration has failed to take off the gloves against the Islamic State. Iraq PM Threatens War Over Turkey’s Military Buildup

In comments broadcast on Iraqi state television, Prime Minister Hayder Abadi confirmed that his nation is “ready” for a full-scale military confrontation with neighboring Turkey, insisting Iraq doesn’t necessarily want war, but is prepared to deal with Turkey “as an enemy.”

The comments come just over a day after Turkey began massing tanks and artillery along the Iraqi border, which Turkish defense officials insisted were simply aimed to prepare for potential “developments in the region.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

This could get nasty, very quickly.

Right now, the Iraqi army cannot even get ISIS out of Mosul; how can it possibly engage positively with highly trained Turkish soldiers?!?

FM: Turkey May Invade Iraq If Threatened

Tensions between Turkey and Iraq continue to rise, and Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu announced today that his country reserves the right to invade Iraq “if there is a threat posed to Turkey,” and that this would include a substantial number of ground troops.

Cavusoglu insisted that invading Iraq is Turkey’s “most natural right.” Turkey presently has about 500 troops in Iraq, which they’ve had for around a year. The Iraqi government has repeatedly demanded Turkey withdraw, but Turkish officials have insisted they will stay and participate in the war against ISIS.

This has been the main source of tension in recent weeks, with Turkey insisting that they are going to send ground troops into Mosul, and Iraq insisting they are unwelcome. Shi’ite militias have even suggested they will treat Turkish troops as enemy forces in the fighting around Mosul.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This rather martial claim on the part of Cavusoglu that invading Iraq is Turkey's "most national right" is based, potentially, on what may ultimately prove some very shrewd calculations on the part of Turkey's government.

It would love nothing more than slicing out a bit of Northern Iraq for their own, while preventing the Kurds from having more a presence Iraq than they already do.

Iraq is not militarily capable of expelling Turkish forces, in light of a weak, factionalized central government, questionable troop capabilities, and training, and the fight against ISIS.

The US government is hardly going to attack a NATO ally, even though it may think Ankara is collectively out of its mind with this move.

This very much further complicates the situation in Iraq, and the US government appears to be completely impotent to stop this, should Turkey make a military move against Iraq.

US Warns Worst Is Yet to Come in Battle for Mosul

Lt. Gen. Stephen Townsend said the resistance so far was “pretty significant” and that there had been indirect fire and IEDs. That’s going to seem a lot less significant by comparison when the troops reach the city, with thousands of ISIS fighters positioned.

ISIS spent the last few months building defenses around Mosul, from oil-filled moats and walls to tunnels and booby traps. The early offensive saw ISIS burning tires around the city to create smoke, limiting visibility for warplanes, and further complicating the offensive.

The American public hasn’t exactly been prepared for the number of US combat casualties this could mean, with the first death already happening to an IED north of Mosul, and officials trying desperately to downplay the number of US troops engaged in “advisory” roles that are, for all intents and purposes, front line combat.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The numbers of both military and civilian casualties here are going to be far greater than anyone is predicting right now.

Imminent Bloodbath: Daesh Takes Iraqi Families As Human Shields In Mosul

As the US-led coalition rushes to free the Iraqi city of Mosul from Daesh, the jihadists are said to be preparing to use civilian residents as human shields against advancing forces.

'Thousands of Peshmerga Fighters Involved in Battling Daesh' in Iraq’s Mosul At least 550 Iraqi families from villages around Mosul have been taken to the city and forced to stay in Daesh-controlled areas, according to UN human rights office spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I frankly think that the estimated figure for civilian casualties is low, and may well run over one million civilians dead.

And of course, to the US's military and civilian war planners, "collateral damage", in terms of innocent people killed in an operation like this, means absolutely nothing unless, in fact, those innocents are Americans.

Then, last week at zerohedge.com, comes the following, very disturbing story:

As the Iraqi military with US support closes in on Mosul it is becoming clear that the US plan is to transfer the ISIS troops defending the city to Syria as part of the regime change plan there. The Russian news media RIA Novosti, has revealed that US and Saudi leaders have decided to allow the safe passage of 9000 ISIS terrorists to vacate Mosul in Iraq and, relocate into Syria. The surprising information was leaked by an anonymous diplomatic source. It was also claimed that this decision was conditional on the terrorists agreeing to fight Syrian and Russian troops in Palmyra and Deir Ezzor. In the past two weeks we have witnessed the chaotic musing within the US Political and diplomatic corps once their impotence was exposed in Syria due to the collapse of the ceasefire and, the resumption of hostilities in Aleppo. The bedlam and frustration exhibited by Western leaders has been apparent to all with wild claims of possible shooting down of Russian jets in Syria and, the continued ache and longing for the implementation of their, No Fly Zone. Despite the turbulent political rumblings and threats, Russia and the government of Syria have steadfastly worked to free eastern Aleppo from the remaining terrorists who are now surrounded there. The decision to allow ISIS to flee safely into Syria once again reveals to the world the gloved hand that shepherds and steers these terrorists. The bombing of Syrian Army soldiers in Deir Ezzor by US and coalition Jets now appear purposed and calculated rather than an accident claimed by the US. To add to the controversy, what was generally unreported in the media was a further attack a few days later that destroyed the last two surviving bridges spanning the Euphrates River. Their destruction, will isolate the Syrian forces stationed at Deir Ezzor and, make life more difficult for the Syrian people who are already wearing the burden of six years at war. As the ISIS terrorists leave Mosul and travel into Syria their objectives are the recently freed city of Palmyra, and the brave city of Deir Ezzor. Whether their safe passage from Mosul includes US and Saudi cover into Syria remains a mystery. Regardless their location in eastern Syria allows their masters the tactical advantage of mobilising these proxy forces at the time of their choosing in their ultimate goal of deposing Syrian President Assad.

If, in fact, this report is true, then the US and Saudi Arabia are still moving forward with their plan for a decap strike against Al-Assad, ultimately pitting US, Russian, and Syrian forces against each other.

This is not a question of if; but when.

FLASHBACK: The Mystery of ISIS’ Toyota Army Solved

The US Treasury has recently opened an inquiry about the so-called “Islamic State’s” (ISIS/ISIL) use of large numbers of brand-new Toyota trucks. The issue has arisen in the wake of Russia’s air operations over Syria and growing global suspicion that the US itself has played a key role in arming, funding, and intentionally perpetuating the terrorist army across Syria and Iraq.

Not surprisingly, it appears the US Treasury is asking the wrong party. Instead of Toyota, the US Treasury’s inquiry should have started next door at the US State Department.

US-led coalition says Turkish army ‘on its own’ in Iraq as Baghdad calls UNSC meeting

The spokesman for the US-led anti-ISIS coalition has said Turkish ground troops in Iraq are not acting as part of the alliance. Baghdad has called for an emergency UN Security Council meeting, saying Ankara is violating Iraqi sovereignty.
The statement came on Thursday from Col. John Dorrian, who is a spokesman for the Combined Joint Task Force (CJTF), an anti-Islamic State coalition consisting of 65 countries.

Dorrian announced during a briefing in Baghdad that Turkey is operating “on its own” in Iraq, AP quoted him as saying. The coalition position is that every unit “should be here with the coordination or and with the permission of the government of Iraq,” he is also quoted as saying.

Webmaster's Commentary:

US government spent over $500m on fake Al-Qaeda propaganda videos that tracked location of viewers

“We need to make this style of video and we’ve got to use Al-Qaeda’s footage,” Mr Wells told the Bureau, recalling the instructions he received. “We need it to be 10 minutes long, and it needs to be in this file format, and we need to encode it in this manner.”

According to Mr Wells’ account, US Marines would then take CDs containing the videos while on patrol, then plant them at sites during raids.

“If they’re raiding a house and they’re going to make a mess of it looking for stuff anyway, they’d just drop an odd CD there,” he said.

The CDs were encoded to open the videos on RealPlayer software that connects to the Internet when it runs. It would issue an IP address that could then be tracked by US intelligence.

21 Iraqi Pro-Govt Fighters Killed in Apparent US Coalition Airstrike

An overnight airstrike destroyed a building occupied by pro-government Iraqi Sunni tribal fighters, killing at least 21 of them, near the city of Qayara, which is the staging area for the upcoming Iraqi invasion of the ISIS city of Mosul.

There is considerable uncertainty about the strike, and particularly who launched it, as Iraqi officials said they were unsure if the strike was conducted by the Iraqi Air Force or by the US-led coalition. One Canadian official did, however, confirm that the coalition was conducting airstrikes in the area “after midnight,” and the incident was around 1 am.

Officials say they believe the incident was likely a coalition strike, and the Pentagon has confirmed a “joint investigation” into the incident, though adding that they take extraordinary precautions not to kill civilians or allies.
