Palestine in Pictures: May 2018

Around 80 Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip during the month of May.

More than 150 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces and armed civilians so far this year. Six Israelis were killed by Palestinians during the same period.

Oday Akram Muhammad Abu Khalil, 15, died on 23 May, eight days after being shot in the stomach during protests marking the annual Nakba Day commemoration.

Lockheed Martin Opening Jerusalem Preschool for Israelis

“We could have set up a research institute on military aviation worldwide, but we went in the direction of [childhood] education because that’s what fires us up.” — Lockheed Martin

American aerospace contractor and maker of the F-35 stealth fighter jet, Lockheed Martin, is opening a “one of a kind” science-focused preschool in Jerusalem, with plans to serve Israeli children as young as five, according to a press release from Jerusalem’s municipality.

In May of this year, an Israeli military official openly bragged that “Israel was the first regime in the world to have used the U.S.-made F-35 stealth fighter jets in attack mode.” In December of 2016, Israel received the first two F-35s out of the 50 ordered from the United States.

Lockheed Martin invested over $1 billion in Israel between 2010 and 2017.

‘Why does Israel get impunity?’ UNSC call for protection of Palestinians vetoed by US

The United States has vetoed a Kuwaiti proposal to the United Nation Security Council (UNSC), which sought to offer “international protection” to Palestinian civilians in the wake of more than 120 of deaths in the Gaza strip.

In a speech to the council, US ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley criticized the proposal, describing it as a “grossly one-sided view”. Haley accused Hamas of inciting violent acts at the border between Gaza and Israel, purposefully infiltrating the ‘Great March of Return’ mass protests with its “terrorist fighters” and deliberately using civilians as human shields.

“The terrorist group Hamas bears primary responsibility for the awful living conditions in Gaza,” she said, before the UNSC vote.

“Turning Middle East into a zone free from weapons of mass destruction” was listed as one of the major aims in a declaration on strategic partnership between Russia and the United Arab Emirates signed on June 1. The goal is seen as part of a wider effort aimed at enhancing international security.

Debunking 18 claims justifying this week’s Gaza massacre

This) is why I have decided to spare others the time, effort, and emotion, by writing out the most common claims I have seen regarding the events of the Great March of Return, followed by my responses. Those interested in fact-checking these common falsehoods, can find them in one place ... Claim 1: Israel acted with "restraint" towards protesters in Gaza ... First thing I can think of is, what border? Israel is the only country in the world with no defined borders, as they keep expanding into others' land. The line between Gaza and Israel is an armistice line from 1949 and 1967, not an internationally recognized border ... Claim 2: Jerusalem has been the capital of the Jewish people for 3,000 years ago. Moving the embassy is just a recognition of that reality ... Claim 3: This Great March of Return is totally organized by Hamas, a terrorist group.
Note: Everyday and in every way Israel is making more enemies!

‘Why does Israel get impunity?’: US vetoes UNSC proposal to ensure protection for Palestinians

The US was the only council member to vote against the proposal. There were 10 votes in favor and four abstentions (Poland, the UK, Netherlands and Ethiopia). A resolution needs nine votes in favor and no vetoes by the US, Russia, China, France or the UK in order to be adopted.

“The message given by the council today, as it votes against this, is that the occupying power enjoys an exception,” the Kuwaiti representative said, after the proposal was vetoed.

"Why do Palestinians continue to suffer? Why does the international community fail to act? Why does Israel enjoy impunity? Why are all these lives lost and all this blood is shed?” he asked.

EU slams Israeli decision to demolish West Bank Bedouin village

The European Union on Thursday urged Israel to reconsider its decision to demolish a Palestinian Bedouin village in the occupied West Bank, saying it undermines "prospects for a lasting peace".

A statement from the EU denounced the intended destruction of the Khan Al-Ahmar village which comes at the same time as the construction of more Israeli settlements on occupied land.

"Building new settlements for Israelis while demolishing Palestinian homes in the same area will only further entrench a one-state reality of unequal rights, perpetual occupation and conflict," the statement said.

France promotes rifles used in Gaza massacres

The maker of rifles used during Israel’s recent massacres in Gaza will soon exhibit its products at an arms fair sponsored by the French government.

Amnesty International’s investigations have identified the Tavor as likely to have been one of the main guns fired by Israeli snipers attacking Palestinian demonstrators over the past two months.

As the manufacturer of that rifle, Israel Weapon Industries ought to be blacklisted by every country which professes concern for human rights.

France is one such country. Emmanuel Macron, its president, officially condemned the killing of more than 100 Palestinian demonstrators since 30 March.

His condemnation was hollow. It came as preparations were underway for the Eurosatory weapons fair in Paris.

Abbas Refused to Meet Democratic Delegation, Led by Pelosi, That Visited Israel

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas refused to meet with a delegation of Democratic members of the U.S. House of Representatives that visited Israel two months ago, in protest of the Trump administration’s policies toward Israel. Abbas’ refusal to meet the delegation caught its members by surprise, because many of them are constant critics of the Trump administration, and they were hoping to hear the Palestinian point of view about Trump’s policies while visiting the region.

The delegation, led by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, visited Israel and Jordan in late March. It comprised 11 representatives, including two members of the House Intelligence Committee. They held lengthy meetings with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem and King Abdullah II in Amman, Jordan. In addition, they met with representatives of civil rights groups in Israel that are fighting against the government’s plan to deport African asylum seekers.

US Opposes Protecting Gazans from Excessive Israeli Force

On Friday, a Kuwait-drafted Security Council resolution to be voted on calls for protecting Gazans from Israeli high crimes, citing “excessive use of force” against (peaceful) demonstrators by IDF soldiers.

Washington intends vetoing it. Neocon extremist US UN envoy Nikki Haley falsely called it “grossly one-sided…only serv(ing) to undermine ongoing efforts toward peace” – bald-faced lies!

The US and Israel deplore peace and stability, waging endless undeclared wars of aggression, civilians in affected theaters harmed most – Gazans viciously abused for 11 years under suffocating blockade conditions.

According to PA UN envoy Riyad Mansour, Washington intends vetoing the Kuwaiti draft resolution unless it’s unacceptably amended.

Instead of even minimal Israeli accountability for horrendous high crimes, the Trump regime wants pro-Western UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to submit undefined “recommendations” on Gaza within 60 days.

Gaza's Great Return March massacre: A turning point?

The opening of the US embassy in Jerusalem on 14 May has rubbed salt into gaping wounds.

As "presidential adviser" Ivanka Trump stood gleefully next to a triumphant Benjamin Netanyahu at the heart of the illegally annexed city, Israel was engaging in yet another massacre less than 100km to the southwest. Dozens of people were killed in Gaza and thousands injured in the six weeks of the Great Return March, between Land Day and Nakba Day, and many of the injured still languish in Gaza’s ill-equipped hospitals.

The siege of Gaza, whose population largely comprises refugees, continues to choke the region, in what has been described as an “incremental genocide”.

Ongoing Nakba
This is what Palestinians mean when they say the Nakba is ongoing. The wrongs against us were not perpetrated just once, in 1948; they continue to this day, with more displacement, more land theft and more mass killings.

Victim blaming after the Gaza massacre

While the world focused on the opening of the new US Embassy in occupied Jerusalem, the Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip were trying to send the message that they are people whom Israel and the international community have driven off their land. The Great Return March protests are intended to get the world to see Palestinians as human beings. If the world is ignoring this, how must it feel about recognition of the Palestinians’ legitimate rights, including the right to return? Palestinian refugees remain stuck in limbo and their tragedy has not been resolved by negotiations, armed struggle or even, it seems, peaceful popular action.

UN boss warns of ‘trouble’ at Palestinian camps in Lebanon, following Trump aid cut

The daily inhalation and dehumanization of Palestinians continues to shock us all. Americans Oppose Investigating the Gaza Massacre

Most Americans would oppose any Trump Administration support for an International Criminal Court investigation into Israel’s use of lethal force against Palestinian protesters on May 14. This is because they either never heard about the massacre or received slanted coverage.

Thousands of Palestinian protesters in Gaza gathered in May near a "no-go" zone along an Israeli-built separation fence. They protested the 70th anniversary of the "Nakba" – or expulsion of more than 700,000 Palestinians in 1948 from what is now Israel. Throughout "March of Return" protests Israeli snipers shot, killed and severely wounded protesters from behind the safety of protective berms. Palestinian casualties peaked the day Trump administration and Israeli officials celebrated recent U.S. recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital by opening a brand-new US embassy in the contested city on May 14.

How the Gaza Massacre Exposed International Cowardice

No other word suffices. No other word captures the signature essence of diplomats – from Canada, the United Nations, Europe – and their obscene, code-word-laced responses to the massacre of Palestinians, including an eight-month-old child.

When the shocking, sprawling human carnage that revealed itself in Gaza on Monday demanded an unequivocal denunciation of the state-sanctioned murder of innocent children, women and men, predictably, they equivocated.

Worse, in prevaricating, they sided, in effect, with the murderers, as cowards are apt to do. In that urgent moment, they hid behind strikingly similar tweets or press releases to point an accusatory finger at the victims; to absolve the perpetrators of their complicity and guilt; to refashion history by insisting that the “violence” did not constitute a massacre, but a “conflict” between two equivalent adversaries; to imply that the victims invited their fates; and to suggest that the victims are propaganda props of “terrorists”.

BREAKING: Israeli Media Exposes Identity of IDF Commander Whose Unit Kidnaps, Assassinates Palestinians

Last week, the hated IDF unit, Duvdevan, performed yet another of its nightly raids in the Palestinian refugee camp al-Am’ari outside Ramallah. It was searching for a Palestinian suspect. It’s not known whether it apprehended the suspect, who he was, or what he was suspected of. Palestinian villagers hate these nighttime raids in which their fellow residents are kidnapped, dragged for questioning, and often imprisoned for months or years either without charges or on trumped-up charges. Duvdevan personnel in particular often disguise themselves as mistarvim (dress as local Palestinians) to arrest and even assassinate targets. That’s why local residents engage in acts of resistance, including rock throwing, at the unwelcome Israeli troops.

Finding the truth amid Israel’s lies

Great sadness and suffering flooded the roads – convoy upon convoy of refugees making their way [to the Lebanese border]. They leave the villages of their homeland and the homeland of their ancestors and move to an alien, unknown new land, full of troubles. Women, children, babies, donkeys – everyone is on the move, quietly and sadly, to the north, without looking left or right.

A woman cannot find her husband, a child cannot find his father … Everything that can walk is moving, running away not knowing what to do, not knowing where they are going. Many of their belongings are spread on the sideways; the more they walk the more exhausted they become, they nearly cannot walk anymore – shedding from the bodies everything they tried to salvage when they are on their way to exile …

‘A scream to the whole world’: Gaza boats carrying students, medical patients, and wounded protesters attempt to break the blockade

For a first time since 1967, two wooden boats set off from Gaza heading to Cyprus on Tuesday, charting their course in protest of Israel’s decade long siege.

Five hours after leaving the dock, the Israeli Navy intercepted the boats arresting 17 passengers while they were 9 nautical miles off the shores of Gaza, according to the International Committee to Break the Siege on Gaza. Since Israel began its blockade of Gaza in 2007, Palestinian boats have not been allowed past 12 nautical miles from the shore.

Israel is obligated to permit fishing up to 20 nautical miles according to the Oslo Accords, however, Gaza’s fisherman have never been allowed this distance.

Israel deliberately provoked the latest violence in Gaza, but you won’t learn that in the ‘NY Times’

Haaretz quotes Jamal Zahalka, a Palestinian member of the Israeli Knesset, who blames Benjamin Netanyahu’s government for the escalation:

The Israeli government is being pushed into a corner by the non-violent demonstrations in Gaza and is initiating a military confrontation to stop them.

The timeline proves that Israeli is provoking the latest violence. On Sunday, Israeli tanks killed 3 members of the small Islamic Jihad group who were inside Gaza. (The Israeli military said it killed the 3 because a bomb had been planted overnight near the border; it offered no proof the dead had anything to do with the alleged bomb.)

Republican Jewish Coalition emerges as Trump’s hub for raising money, and making foreign policy

One of the famous moments of the presidential campaign was back in December 2015 when Donald Trump told the Republican Jewish Coalition that he didn’t want their money, or their control. “You’re not gonna support me because I don’t want your money. You want to control your politicians, that’s fine.”

Those words are among Trump’s most self-satirizing; because 2-1/2 years later, the deal’s gone down. The transactional president definitely wants the money. And the RJC definitely wants control….

If you read between the lines of recent news events, it appears that this organization that works hard to push Israel’s agenda inside the GOP has become the address for fundraising and foreign policy ideas under Donald Trump. The RJC has a lot of power in this administration; and international players know it.

In a statement released on the 70th anniversary of the Nakba, the union said the move highlights is support for Palestinian refugees, their right of return and is in condemnation of the US’ decision to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to occupied Jerusalem.

Arab countries are complicit in the oppression and suffering of Palestinians, the statement which was signed by the TGLU’s General Secretary Noureddinne Taboubi said.

Israel bans entry of Indonesia tourists

Israel has moved to ban the entry of Indonesian tourists, in retaliation for Jakarta suspending visas for Israelis in the aftermath of the massacre in Gaza last week.

Indonesia strongly condemned Israel’s brutal actions against Palestinians during recent border protests held to mark 70 years since the Nakba, when nearly one million Palestinians were forced out of their homes to make way for the creation of the state of Israel.

An earlier statement from the Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon said that Israel was trying to reverse Indonesia’s decision, but such efforts seem to have failed, prompting a reciprocal ban.

There are no diplomatic relations between Israel and Indonesia, but the two countries maintain economic ties so Israelis can visit the Asian country using temporary or business visas. Earlier this month, reports surfaced that Indonesia was considering issuing tourist visas to Israeli citizens, prior to their complete suspension.

Arms in arm: Britain turns to Israeli tech to form new air-defense system

Amid scrutiny of Britain’s arms sales to Israel, the government says it has just successfully tested a new air-defense missile system which uses Israeli technology.

It’s a sign of the growing two-way relationship in defense just after it was reported that sales by British arms companies to Israel have hit a new peak amid international condemnation of the Israeli army’s often brutal tactics.

Since the 2014 Israel-Gaza conflict, Britain has approved £320 million ($424 million) worth of arms to Israel, UK government data shows.

The successful test of the Land Ceptor system took place at a Swedish test-fire range near the Baltic Sea. The system will be paired with an advanced radar developed by Swedish firm Saab and a £78 million ($103 million) electronics suite provided by Israel’s Rafael to form the James Bondesque-sounding Sky Sabre air-defense system.

Tensions between the local population and the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are growing. Protests against the SDF have recently erupted in the cities of Manbij, Hasakah and Raqqah.

The predominantly Arab local population protested against behavior and policies, including forced conscription, implemented by the SDF. Forces of the US-led coalition were even forced to intervene into the situation in Raqqa in order to stop infighting between the Kurdish YPG and local Arab units.

The SDF and the SDF-held area is de-facto dominated by Kurdish YPG/YPJ militias and their political wing PYD. This is also one of the factors triggering tensions with the local population.

How Israeli banks finance theft of Palestinian land

The Aamer family owns about 100 acres of land just half a kilometer from their home village of Mas’ha.

But that land now lies on the other side of Israel’s apartheid wall in the occupied West Bank.

Some family members have permits from the Israeli military to reach their land, but doing so is an ordeal. Instead of a short walk, it requires a 20-kilometer detour taking hours. It also requires passing through the barrier at a specially designated gate that opens only twice a day for 15-30 minutes each time.

As a result, family members now rarely visit their land. Instead of growing labor intensive crops such as wheat and barley, they now cultivate about 200 olive trees, and that is after Israeli occupation forces uprooted another 300 trees and built roads and structures on some of their land.

The Aamer family’s land is now in the heart of Elkana, an Israeli settlement built around and on some of their land with the help of Bank Mizrahi Tefahot.

Tom Friedman has advice for Palestinians: Embrace Zionism

One of the advantages of being a liberal Zionist is that you never have to take responsibility for what Zionism does. You can blame Palestinians for their own demise, maintain a sense of righteousness while people die, and defend Israel no matter what it does. And you can state emphatically that you know what Palestinians need to do, though you’ve never considered their experience. They exist, for you, only in a theoretical sense.

“Just what are we going to do about the Palestinians,” you and your liberal Zionist friends can ask over lattes and chai teas at coffee shops. And when you write about them, you can consider the Palestinian people only as a theory–something abstract to be grappled with–rather than human beings who deserve the dignity and freedom that you have. You don’t ever have to acknowledge Palestinian history or experience.

Tom Friedman has advice for Palestinians: Embrace Zionism

Take, for example, Thomas Friedman’s May 23, 2018, opinion piece in The New York Times, “Hamas, Netanyahu and Mother Nature.” Friedman’s critique–which shakes its finger at the Palestinians who have screwed up again–is yet another liberal Zionist apology for Israel’s recent massacre of 62 people at the Gaza border. “If Hamas had chosen to recognize Israel and build a Palestinian state in Gaza modeled on Singapore,” Friedman writes, “the world would have showered it with aid and it would have served as a positive test case for the West Bank.” Using an “If-X-then-Y” equation, Friedman knows what’s best for what ails Palestinians. If they just behaved better, he declares, Israel’s treatment of them would improve.

World War 3: Russian aircraft 'INTERCEPT' Israeli FIGHTER JETS over Libyan capital

RUSSIAN Su-34 aircraft “intercepted” Israeli F-16 fighter jets over Tripoli airspace despite a mechanism to avoid conflicts between Moscow and Jerusalem, it has been reported.

Reports including Israeli, Lebanese and Russian media outlets claim two Israeli Air Force F-16 planes were challenged by Sukhoi Su-34 jets over Libya.

Video circulated of Russian planes flying over Lebanon but the clip did not show any Israeli jets.

However, Moscow denied the allegations and said it does not conduct missions in Lebanese airspace.

The Russian Defence Ministry said: “The information spread by one of the Israeli news outlets about an alleged ‘interception' of two Israeli F-16s by a Russian Su-34 in Lebanese airspace is amateur nonsense.

Israel Wants US to Keep F-35 'Upgrade Capabilities' Secret From Turkey – Reports

The discussions between Israel and the United States have also reportedly touched upon the jet’s performance-enhancing software; unnamed sources confirmed to Haaretz that the matter is “part of the negotiations,” while Israel has denied having talks over the F-35 deal, under which Turkey is expected to obtain 100 stealth fighter jets.

British defense companies made a record amount of money from selling weapons and military hardware to Israel, anti-arms campaigners’ data shows. New figures were revealed ahead of the royal trip to the country in June.
According to Campaign Against Arms Trade (CAAT), defense contractors made at least £221 million ($294 million) last year from deals with Tel Aviv. That is a significant increase compared to £86 million ($114 million) in 2016. Export licenses to Israel issued by the UK government and tracked down by CAAT cover a wide range of military equipment, ranging from missile components and explosives to body armor and weapon sights.

The news emerges just days after Prince William announced the date of his forthcoming trip to Israel and Palestine. He will arrive on June 25, and is scheduled to travel to Israel’s capital Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Ramallah, where the Palestinian Authority is based. His tour will be the first-ever official trip of a British royal to Israel.

Webmaster's Commentary:

One has to wonder; is the now three-times father Prince William going to Israel and Palestine, to get a better idea of what has been going on in this conflict, or is he shilling Tel Aviv to buy more British-made weaponry?!?

I would like to hope the reason is the former, rather than the latter, but only time will tell.

Israeli navy stops boats of wounded Palestinians trying to break siege on Gaza

Two vessels carrying 17 student activists and Palestinians injured during the recent Great March of Return protests attempted to break Israel’s siege on the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, before the Israeli military intervened.
Israeli security forces arrested the passengers from one of the two boats running the blockade and escorted the vessel 12 miles away from the Gaza coast to the Israeli side. It was not immediately clear what happened to the second boat.

The attempt to break the siege comes as tensions run especially high in the Gaza Strip, with Israeli warplanes pounding targets in the Hamas-run Palestinian territory in response to mortar fire…

Roman Abramovich becomes Israeli citizen after UK delays visa renewal

Russia’s Roman Abramovich, the billionaire owner of Chelsea Football Club, has been granted Israeli citizenship. The move coincides with a delayed renewal of his UK visa, which some view as part of a crackdown on wealthy Russians.

Abramovich, who is worth an estimated £8.6 billion ($11.4 billion), exercised his right under Israel’s Law of Return, which allows Jews from anywhere in the world to gain Israeli citizenship.

Incidentally, with his new citizenship, Abramovich has instantly become Israel’s richest person – and perhaps he’ll find it easier to get back into the UK as an Israeli citizen. Unlike the Russians, the Israelis do get a visa-free stay in the UK for up to six months straight, but it’s not clear if the decision on the Tier 1 investor visa that he needs is actually affected by the citizenship of the applicant.

And when they fall, they will take the entire country with them.

Israel accused of 'war crime' over bulldozing of Palestinian olive groves

Palestinian leaders have accused Israel of a war crime after military tractors destroyed around a thousand olive and almond trees belonging to local farmers on the grounds that they were illegally planted on state land.

Stunned farmers were at the targeted hillside Friday, aghast that nothing remained of their 5-10 year old trees except a few stumps and some olive tree branches. “They didn’t leave me anything,” said Sabri Manasra, who said he and a cousin had lost 800 trees. “This is damage no one will forget, not my children, or my children’s children. It’s damage to our heart. I don’t understand how people can do this.”

The uprooting operation, the largest of its kind in the southern West Bank in three years, was carried out on Thursday by what farmers said were five military vehicles on land the farmers say they own. Three years ago, Israeli authorities posted signs saying that the land belongs to the state, farmers said.

Fathi Harb Burnt himself to Death in Gaza. Will the World Notice?

Fathi Harb should have had something to live for, not least the imminent arrival of a new baby. But last week the 21-year-old extinguished his life in an inferno of flames in central Gaza.

It is believed to be the first example of a public act of self-immolation in the enclave. Harb doused himself in petrol and set himself alight on a street in Gaza City shortly before dawn prayers during the holy month of Ramadan.

In part, Harb was driven to this terrible act of self-destruction out of despair.

After a savage, decade-long Israeli blockade by land, sea and air, Gaza is like a car running on fumes. The United Nations has repeatedly warned that the enclave will be uninhabitable within a few years.
