Gaza could soon become uninhabitable, UN report predicts

A hard-hitting new United Nations report says Gaza could become uninhabitable in less than five years if current economic and population trends continue.

It cites what it describes as the “de-development” of the blockaded coastal strip, which is at present home to some 1.8 million Palestinians but is expected to grow to 2.1 million by 2020.

“De-development” describes a process where development is not only hindered but actually reversed. Findings by the UN conference on trade and development point to the eight-year economic blockade of Gaza as well as the three wars between Israel and the Palestinians over the past six years.

‘West creates refugees by destroying Islamic nations’ – Chechen leader

The head of Russia’s Chechen Republic claims the current asylum seeker crisis in European countries originated in the aggressive policies of the United States and the EU. He also called upon all Muslim nations to jointly fight the root of the problem.

“If today no one rises against the inhumane policies of the Western countries, tomorrow the disaster may come to any Muslim country. I call upon you to urgently discuss this problem, to develop a unified position and to save the lives of thousands of people,” Ramzan Kadyrov wrote on his Instagram account (Kadyrov uses Instagram as a social network for public statements).

“Tens of thousands of Muslims are dying. Women, old people, children and young people as well. Under such conditions the leaders of Islamic countries has no right to remain silent, to stand aside and remain simple observers,” he added.

How EU officials shrugged off aid to Israeli settlements

During the past few years, the European Commission, the EU’s executive bureaucracy, has been questioned by many Palestine solidarity activists on why it approved scientific research grants to the cosmetics-maker Ahava.

The EU hierarchy was — rightly — made to feel awkward by these questions. Ahava’s main factory is located in a Jewish-only settlement in the West Bank; like all other nations in the world, EU governments regard Israel’s construction and expansion of those colonies as contrary to international law.

The United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America – known as UE – has voted to back the Palestinian call for boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) on Israel.

Palestinian trade unionists and activists are warmly welcoming the move.

UE represents more than 30,000 workers across the country in a range of private and public sector occupations.

Israeli night raids a routine terror for Palestinian children

It’s a regular and terrifying scene in the occupied West Bank: heavily armed Israeli soldiers, often with large dogs, raid a Palestinian family’s home. They wake the children, arresting one or more of them.

This is what happened to Hamza Muayyad Shukri Hammad, 15, when his home in Silwad, a village near Ramallah, was invaded at 2am on Sunday.

As reported by the Arabic-language Quds news site, Hamza’s mother said that during the two-hour raid on her family’s home, Hamza and his 10-year-old brother, Bilal, were detained.

Soldiers raided Hamza’s room, ransacking it. They confiscated phones and smart devices from the home and a computer was deliberately smashed.

A new United Nations report says Gaza could be “uninhabitable” in less than five years if current economic trends continue.

BEX Alert!!! - "Netanyahu wants to resume ‘direct’ talks with Palestinians ‘immediately’ "

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has voiced his willingness to continue the negotiations with Palestine "without preconditions." Meanwhile, Israel filed a complaint with the UN against the Palestinian flag flying at the General Assembly.

"I have no precondition to reach negotiations, I'm willing to drive to Ramallah or anyplace else now in order to run direct negotiations," Netanyahu said.

The PM is equally determined to proceed to the two-state solution and is all in favor of a demilitarized Palestinian state alongside Israel, according to the statement.

Israel is “Targeting Christian-Palestinian Communities in the West Bank”. Confiscating Lives, One Hectare at a Time

The expansion of Israel’s ‘separation barrier’ is targeting Christian-Palestinian communities in the West Bank, reports Noreen Sadik.

On 17 August, Issa al-Shatleh, of Beit Jala, Palestine, started his day with news that Israeli soldiers were on the land that had belonged to his family for hundreds of years. When he arrived, he found ‘they were destroying the land, and cutting my ancient olive trees, some hundreds of years old’. ‘They came without a warning,’ he said.

And it is not just al-Shatleh’s land that is being confiscated. Close to 3 hectares of private land were razed that morning and 45 trees, some of them over 100 years old, were uprooted. As landowners tried to stop the destruction, violent clashes broke out, sending al-Shatleh’s brother to the hospital.

Palestinians Protest Israeli Settlers' Seizure of Hospital

Dozens of Palestinians staged demonstrations outside the Al-Baraka hospital complex in the Southern West Bank city of Hebron (Al-Khalil) to protest the occupation of the premises by Jewish settlers.

The demonstrations, which included a number of Palestinian Christians, were organized by local popular resistance committees, Anadolu reported.

“Palestinians will never accept Israel's policy of illegal Jewish settlement,” Fr. Attallah Hanaa, a Palestinian Christian clergyman who participated in the protest, told the agency.

“We will always reject Israel's seizure of Islamic and Christian institutions,” he said.

“We are of this land; it is our home, our history, our identity,” the priest added. “And we will never surrender it to the Israeli occupiers.”

According to Israeli daily Haaretz, the settlers claim to have purchased the hospital complex from a US-based Christian NGO through a Swedish firm that served as middleman.

Stung by BDS, Israel mistreats US Palestinians at border crossings

The US is tolerating Israel’s mistreatment of US citizens of Palestinian origin, Arab-American advocates are saying. Israeli authorities have recently refused entry to several Palestinians with US passports, including an outspoken activist.

When Nerdeen Kiswani tried to cross into the West Bank at the Allenby Bridge crossing, she was interrogated for 15 hours, and then denied entry based on her “hostile behavior towards Israel.”

Kiswani, a student at CUNY Staten Island and Hunter College in New York City, has crossed without much trouble in 2013 and 2014. Last month, however, Israeli border guards interrogated her about her political activism, including the involvement with Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) and the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. Her US passport meant nothing to the Israelis, Kiswani told RT.

“It doesn’t matter to them what passport Palestinians hold,” she said.

Cameron Ennobles Director of British Israel Lobby

There is currently a petition on the House of Commons website that demands the arrest of Netanyahu should he try to visit the UK in September. This petition is now expected to reach 100,000 signatures within the next few days.

However, notwithstanding the strength of feeling in the UK against Israeli brutality, Cameron has stunned British voters by proposing to ennoble the director of the British Israel lobby that condones the illegal settlements and the brutal killings by the IDF.

This perverse decision would mean, if ratified, that effectively, an agent of the Israeli government in Tel Aviv would be sitting in the House of Lords, in London – in the second chamber of the British Parliament.

That is a position that would be deemed anti-democratic at best and unacceptable to those who require our legislators to hold an unequivocal allegiance exclusively to the democratic institutions of the United Kingdom.

ARAB SUPPORT IS KEY TO PALESTINE’S LIBERATION

We Palestinians don’t expect miracles from the Arabs. We don’t expect them to liberate Palestine from the River to the Sea. We don’t even expect them to liberate al-Quds Ash-sharif and al-Masjidul Aqsa from the clutches of Zionism.

However, there are certain tasks the Arabs could easily do to enable our people to survive and be steadfast as we have done since the Nakba 67 years ago.

Rich Arab states, such as the Gulf States and Saudi Arabia, can and should allow more Palestinians to seek employment opportunities in their respective countries. The Palestinians are skilled, educated and can be trusted to perform their duties without endangering the internal security of these states.

Gaza hospitals face imminent shutdown

Several main Gaza hospitals face the prospect of an immediate shutdown due to an energy crisis that has lasted for months, the Gaza Health Ministry said Monday.

“Shifa Hospital, Kamal Adwan hospital, the European Gaza Hospital, and Rantisi Hospital could stop offering services because they are about to run out of fuel,” said Ashraf al-Qidra, spokesperson for the ministry. “The current situation is the worst since the Ministry of Health was created in the Gaza Strip,” he added.

The Gaza Strip receives energy from Egypt and Israel, in addition to one local power plant, but due to power shortages, hospitals are forced to rely on private generators. Recent months have seen a crisis which is now coming to a head, the Palestinian Ma’an news agency reported.

In addition to the energy crisis, the hospitals face many other challenges, including damages incurred during last summer’s war, medicine shortages and staff strikes.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Where in the name of heaven is someone to speak for that child, writhing in pain in this picture?!?

One has to wonder if one part of the Israel Government's "final solution" toward Gazan Palestinians is to have inflicted as much physical and emotional pain while they are in hospital, particularly to children and toddlers, by not having proper medications and dressings, and claim it is "someone else's fault."

Doctors Without Borders, where the hell are you?!?

In recent days, anti-Palestinian organizations have been crowing over the disinvitation of Matthew Paul Miller, an American Jewish singer who uses the stage name Matisyahu, from the Rototom Sunsplash music festival in Valencia, Spain.

Amid cries of anti-Semitism from the Anti-Defamation League and the World Jewish Congress and condemnation by the government of Spain, the incident has become the latest stick with which to beat the Palestinian-led movement of boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS).

“The festival organizers contacted me because they were getting pressure from the BDS movement,” Millerwrote on his Facebook page on 17 August. “They wanted me to write a letter, or make a video, stating my positions on Zionism and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to pacify the BDS people.”

“My music speaks for itself, and I do not insert politics into my music,” he claimed.

BDS MUST ADMIT ITS MISTAKES

For the past ten years the International BDS Movement has been the most vocal and respected Movement against the occupation of Palestine.

It has grown rapidly, especially in the Jewish sectors on US campuses. Its fight for Justice has caused alarm in zionist circles and has been the target of anti-Semitic charges by Israel itself, all of which are unjustifed and untrue.

Attempts by the Israeli government to blackmail the BDS leadership have failed and will continue to do so. Instead, victory after victory have been celebrated throughout the world as BDS wins battle after battle.

Last week the organisors of a Reggae Festival in Valencia cancelled an invitation to a Jewish American because of his refusal to publicly support the creation of a Palestinian State. The decision was made after the Valencia BDS Movement put pressure on the group. It was a decision that was applauded worldwide including on this Blog itself.

In Israel, Huckabee goes against longstanding U.S. policy

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee on Wednesday rejected the notion that the West Bank is occupied territory insisting instead that the largely Palestinian-populated territory is part of Israel.

Huckabee's statements -- during a trip to Israel -- fly in the face of international law and longstanding U.S. policy, which consider the West Bank as occupied territory and the construction of additional settlements in that territory illegal.

"I don't see it as occupied," Huckabee said Wednesday during a press conference in Jerusalem. "That makes it appear as if someone is illegally taking land. I don't see it that way."

'Desperate situation': UN confirms typhoid at Palestinian refugee camp in Damascus

Typhoid has broken out at a Palestinian refugee camp in the Syrian capital, with at least 6 cases confirmed, according to the UN. The body is concerned that these cases are just “the tip of the iceberg," warning of "massive" risks of other diseases.

The cases confirmed by the UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) come from blockaded Yarmouk refugee camp in the south of Damascus, which houses displaced Palestinian refugees and Syrian civilians. Over 200 medical consultations have been carried out.

"Our concern is that these typhoid cases only represent the tip of the iceberg, because the erosion of health services and appalling public health standards create a massive, massive risk of diseases breaking out," UNWRA spokesman Chris Gunness told Reuters, adding that the “situation is desperate.”

British petition calls for Netanyahu to be arrested for war crimes

The petition, filed on the U.K. parliament petition website, was apparently inspired by an upcoming visit to London by Netanyahu for meetings with the government.

Thousands of U.K. residents have signed a petitiondemanding the arrest of Israeli Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu for his war crimes against Gaza during last summer’s brutal offensive.

Given the large scale of support and attention, the U.K. government may be forced to publicly respond in the near future.

It's Time to Admit It. Israeli Policy Is What It Is: Apartheid

I used to be one of those people who took issue with the label of apartheid as applied to Israel. I was one of those people who could be counted on to argue that, while the country's settlement and occupation policies were anti-democratic and brutal and slow-dose suicidal, the word apartheid did not apply.

Fatah: Israel attempts to turn PA into expanded municipality

Member of Fatah executive committee Mohamed Ishtea said on Friday that Israel does not want a Palestinian state based upon the 1967 borders because it recognises that this would contribute to its end, Qudsnet reported.

During the inauguration of a conference about Palestinian refugees in the refugee camp of Ayda in the West Bank, he said that Israel wants the Palestinians to remain living in small scattered cantons.

Ishtea stressed that the Oslo Agreement happened during a very difficult political situation for the Arab countries, noting that there was a number of positive points in the agreement such as the return of 150,000 Palestinian refugees and the establishment of the state.

Meanwhile, he said that there are many negative points in the agreement, which have to be corrected by spreading national awareness and rebuilding the PLO, thus enabling it to carry out its role as a home for all the Palestinians.

Israel, Congress and the Iran Nuclear Agreement

snip: ‘The Iran deal threatens the very existence of Israel.’ Ho-hum. We keep hearing this, anytime anyone dares do or say anything in opposition to Israel. When someone suggests that perhaps United States aid to Israel, greater than that given to all other countries combined, could fantinapossibly go to better use serving the taxpayers whose pockets it is being extracted from, Israel interprets such ideas as anti-Semitic, clear evidence that another Holocaust is around the corner, and needing the support of the U.S. Congress to quash such destructive thoughts. If one mentions the suffering of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, suffering caused by the illegal Israeli blockade, Israeli spokespeople accuse the speaker of denying Israel its right to defend itself. Yet when Israeli government officials call Palestinians ‘beasts’, and advocate their complete annihilation, well, what does that really matter?

Infant Mortality Soars in Gaza after Eight Years of Israeli Siege

snip: The rise of the infant mortality rate is “the effect of a decade of blockade, including the infamous calorie count, restrictions on movement, poverty, dependence on food aid, power crises, the sewage flooding the streets, and the wars bringing down homes and bringing instead unstable and unhealthy shelters,” Dabour told The Electronic Intifada.

Israeli company cuts off water supplies to Palestinians in West Bank

An Israeli water company has cut off water supplies to Palestinians in some areas in the occupied West Bank.

Mekorot, the Israeli firm, on Wednesday cut crucial water supplies to some areas in the northern West Bank, the Palestinian Water Authority (PWA) said.

Palestinian authorities also said that water supplies north of the northern city of Nablus were mostly impacted after the move by Mekorot.

The Palestinian Authority, which runs the West Bank, said it is working to reconnect the empty water pipes with another source of water. The PWA has contacted Mekorot, but is yet to receive a response.

“In ‘A Full Life,’ Jimmy Carter at 90 remains a wise truth teller”.

His announcement was candid and truthful.

The cancer first identified in his liver, has “spread to other parts of his body”. He expects to hang around for a while; his travel schedule is only cut back, not canceled. How long will a “while” last? We will just have to wait and see.

The pending freedom of both Israelis and Palestinians from the bondage of conflict, owes a great deal to this man.

Why was a Palestinian Toddler Burned to Death?

News coming out of the occupied Palestine on 8 August 2015 said that Saad Dawabsheh, the father of a Palestinian toddler Ali who was killed in a firebombing of his home a week ago, has died from wounds he sustained in the incident.

The arsonists left inscriptions on the wall of the house, saying: “Long live the Messiah” and “Revenge”. Israeli settlers attacking Palestinian homes, churches and mosques characteristically use this “price tag” tactic.

HOW RE/MAX PROFITS FROM SELLING PALESTINE’S STOLEN LANDS

Agents working for the US-headquartered real estate giant RE/MAX are promoting themselves as specialists in property built in Israel’s settlements on occupied Palestinian land.

The Colorado-based corporation which says it operates in nearly 100 countries was identified as responsible by a 2013 United Nations’ probe for how its Israeli franchises sell houses and apartments in the occupied West Bank.

Despite that criticism, many RE/MAX representatives are continuing to handle such property.

Binyamin Netanyahu is not known as a classical scholar, but even so he has adopted the Roman maxim Divide et Impera, divide and rule.

The main (and perhaps only) goal of his policy is to extend the rule of Israel, as the "Nation-State of the Jewish People", over all of Eretz Israel, the historical land of Palestine. This means ruling all of the West Bank and covering it with Jewish
