Vatican refuses to let Israel see details of agreement with Palestinians

Haaretz said on Tuesday that the Vatican has rejected requests by Israeli diplomats to see the text of an agreement signed between the Holy See and the State of Palestine two weeks ago. The Israeli newspaper quoted a senior official as saying that diplomats have attempted to review the text on four separate occasions, but the Vatican declined to give details about the content of the agreement.

AP corrects story falsely claiming homosexuality is illegal for Palestinians

Last week, in an article on the controversial rainbow flag mural a Palestinian artist painted on Israel’s apartheid wall, the Associated Press made this claim: “A 1951 Jordanian law banning homosexual acts remains in effect in the West Bank, as does a ban in Gaza passed by British authorities in 1936.”

In fact, there is no law in the West Bank, or in Jordan, that bans sexual relations between consenting adults of the same sex.

Gaza, a year on from Operation Protective Edge: A growing population and a compromised and depleted aquifer leaves water in scarce supply for Palestinians

To quench their thirst, the Gazans dug too deep, and drank too freely. Now the coastal aquifer that supplied much of their water is depleted and will never again offer a plentiful supply of fresh drinking water. With damage to infrastructure in the Hamas-Israel war, aid agencies say Gaza’s fresh water shortage has turned into a crisis.

In Rafah, a southern Gaza city that is a furnace in the summer months, a shopkeeper produces a bottle of water, but warns: “Be careful... it is Gaza water.”

Salty and impure, it is like much of the water drunk by Gaza’s 1.8 millon people.

HILLARY SOLD HER SOUL (AND HER COUNTRY) FOR 2 MILLION DOLLAR$

Hillary Rodham Clinton said she will speak out against the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement against Israel during her presidential campaign.

“I know you agree that we need to make countering BDS a priority,” Clinton said in a July 2 letter to Haim Saban, the Israeli-American entertainment mogul who has been a major fundraiser for Clinton in the past. “I am seeking your advice on how we can work together – across party lines and with a diverse array of voices – to reverse this trend with information and advocacy, and fight back against further attempts to isolate and delegitimize Israel.”

The Democratic front-runner concludes the letter, which Saban released through a public relations agency, by saying that she plans to address the BDS threat in the coming weeks, as her campaign intensifies.
“I will be speaking out publicly on this in the weeks ahead, so I am eager to hear your perspective and advice,” she wrote.

Israeli Military Court Justice: Rubber-Stamp Guilt

Civil law applies for Israeli Jews – not Palestinians. They’re subject to military kangaroo court justice. Rubber-stamp convictions follow. Fundamental international rule of law principles don’t apply.

A new B’Tselem report explains how Israel’s system works for Palestinians – titled “Presumed Guilty: Remand in Custody by Military Courts in the West Bank.” They’re one of the main ways Israel enforces occupation harshness.

Since 1967, over 800,000 Palestinians were victimized by tribunal injustice. “Detention is injurious by definition,” B’Tselem explained.

Many commentators are not traceable to any real individual because they use pseudonyms. On Twitter, where there is much debate surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, some anti-Palestine comments or reactions come from pages with 25 followers and little activity; one begins to doubt whether these are genuine Twitter users.
Indeed, these commentators are paid individuals, often university students, who are hired by the office of the prime minister of Israel to respond quickly and fiercely to anyone daring to criticise the state of Israel and its actions.

A Jewish Defector Warns America: Benjamin Freedman Speaks

"Now, first of all, I'd like to tell you that on August 25th 1960 -- that was shortly before elections -- Senator Kennedy, who is now the President of the United States, went to New York, and delivered an address to the Zionist Organization of America. In that address, to reduce it to its briefest form, he stated that he would use the armed forces of the United States to preserve the existence of the regime set up in Palestine by the Zionists who are now in occupation of that area."

In a written statement, the Galician Nationalist Bloc described Israeli action as "piracy".

The bloc's spokesman Francisco Jorquera and Rosana Peres, a parliament member, also criticised the Spanish government's reaction over the incident, which saw Israeli forces taking by force the civilian vessel, Marianne, to the Israeli port of Ashdod.

Spanish Member of the European Parliament Ana Miranda, who was on board Marianne but now back in Spain, also spoke in the Spanish parliament earlier today.

The spokesman called on Spain's Foreign Ministry to take a tough stance over the incident and face the Gaza issue head on.

Podemos's spokesman Rfael Mayoral also urged the international community to raise its voice against Israel.

Mayoral emphasized that Israel should end its "discrimination" and "blockade" on Gaza underling that Israel violated human rights.

Palestinian cinema thrives in London despite festival demise

The vibrant line-up of Palestinian cinema in London this summer comes despite the surprising and somewhat mysterious suspension of the London Palestine Film Festival which, with its program of talks, exhibitions and panels, was able to place the films in a broader context.

The festival, which started out in 1998 as a student venture at London’s School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), issued a statement in late May announcing that “After 17 editions of the London Palestine Film Festival, the Palestine Film Foundation has announced that from 2015 it is suspending production of the annual film festival indefinitely.”

According to the statement, the goal of achieving enough funding to run the festival “at the standard deemed necessary” has “continued to elude the organization.”

Well-known BBC presenter hints Israel may be underdog

So, in the 21st century — these supposedly modern, anti-racist times — how does Israel get away with the chauvinistic behavior of 19th century European settler states without arousing the fury of the masses?

The answer lies in the fact that the masses — accessing their news from the mainstream media — simply don’t know what’s going on.

Mainstream news sources shield Israel from the wrath of millions who, if they were aware of the facts, might be lobbying for change.

The variety of ways in which this cover-up takes place was starkly illustrated in recent weeks by the BBC’s Newsnight program, broadcast every weekday evening and billing itself as providing “analysis and observation of the news agenda.”

The settlements are not part of Israel

The Trade Promotion Authority Bill signed by President Barack Obama last week includes an important clause stipulating that the United States will not trade with countries that boycott Israel.

This clause is supposed to protect Israel from an economic boycott. But the same clause, which authorizes the president to take all measures to protect trade with Israel from politically motivated acts, says the protection will apply not only to Israel but to “territories controlled by Israel.”

The law’s sponsors intended to protect products from the settlements, as though they were an inseparable part of Israel. But this attempt to blur the border between Israel and the occupied territories got a cold reception from the president. Obama made it clear that despite the wording of the legislation he signed, he does not intend to protect products made in the territories.

Protests against Israel are gaining momentum all over the world.
The tensions are generated by the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian land. Even Washington has recently soured relations with Israel over the case.

Israel deports former Tunisian president to France

Following Israel's hijacking of the Gaza-bound ship Marianne in international waters on Monday, Arab-Israeli Basel Ghattas MK has been released from custody and former Tunisian President Moncef Al-Marzouki has been deported to France, reported Al-Araby Al-Jadeed.

Sixteen foreign nationals were on board the vessel, along with two Israelis, Ghattas and a television reporter. The MK could face a parliamentary hearing to see whether he should face sanctions or not. He revealed that MEP Ana Miranda was also deported along with Al-Marzouki.

According to Ghattas, the Israeli navy intercepted the Marianne at 2am local time and the crew turned the engines off, refusing to cooperate with the Israelis. By 7am, the navy was towing the ship towards Ashdod. "The Israelis confiscated all of the activists' personal belongings, including mobile phones and other equipment," he said. The Hijacking of The Marianne by “The Pirates of the Mediterranean”

The “international community” is, it would seem, remarkably selective over piracy.

Concern over Somali pirates was such that foreign Navies were sent to protect shipping in international waters. In one incident three alleged pirates were killed and a Somali teenager spirited away to the US to be tried, whilst eleven others were sent for trial in Kenya.

However, in the early hours of the morning (local time) of June 29th, three Israeli Navy ships intercepted and hijacked a Swedish flagged ship, the Marianne av Göteborg on route to Gaza in the State of Palestine (recognized as a State by the United Nations on November 30th, 2012 by an overwhelming vote of 138-9, elevating Palestine to Non-Member Observer State a status bestowed on just one other entity, The Vatican.)

Letter signed by 22 senators urges Obama to support Israel

Nearly one-quarter of the U.S. Senate signed on to a bipartisan letter urging President Barack Obama to support Israel around the world.

Twenty-two senators signed the letter, which was written “in response to your welcomed recent remarks at Congregation Adas Israel” on May 22 concerning his commitment to Israel’s security. The letter was sponsored by Sens. Mike Rounds, R-S.D., and Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y.

While welcoming Obama’s “unwavering commitment” to Israel’s security, the signers also want the Obama administration to remain committed to the United States’ “long-standing policy” of negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians as the way to peace.

The letter specifically asked the administration to oppose Palestinian efforts for membership in the United Nations and other international bodies.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Why Israel Declared 18 Dairy Cows a National Security Risk

Within six months, the whole town had turned to the local dairy for its milk, dubbed “Intifada milk.” The self-made dairymen delivered it by night so Israeli soldiers wouldn’t see it. One day an Israeli soldier came to the farm, took photos of the cows, and told the Palestinians they weren’t allowed to have the cows and gave them 24 hours to shut it down. He said the cows were a threat to Israel’s national security. Amer Shomali thinks he knows why.

“For the Palestinians, it meant a step closer to being free, to be able to decide their future, to be independent. Basically that was what was the security threat for Israel. It’s not the cow itself. It’s what the cow represents: a step toward independence.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

Sniper shots and mass arrests: UN Gaza report also documents Israeli abuses in West Bank last summer

The recently released United Nations report on the 2014 war in Gaza meticulously documents last summer’s horror. The reports of Israeli executions of Palestinians, Israel’s aerial assaults on Palestinians in their homes in Gaza and other aspects of the assault have attracted the most attention.

But the UN report also highlights what it calls “widespread human rights violations” by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem during the time period it examines. These violations ran the gamut from a sweeping campaign of arrests of those Israel claimed were tied to Hamas, torture of detainees, killings of protesters and punitive home demolitions.

#SailingToGaza ~~ THE BASTARDS TRY TO STOP US AGAIN

Passengers of the Freedom Flotilla III bound for Gaza have announced that one of the boats, named Juliano after the co-founder and director of The Freedom Theatre, Juliano Mer Khamis who was assassinated in 2011, has been sabotaged. Divers damaged the boat’s propellers, causing it to take in water and the boat barely made it into port in Greece before it sank. On Saturday June 27th, passengers reported that the flotilla was followed by an unidentified patrol boat and a military aircraft.

Israel has engaged in a massive campaign to prevent the flotilla from reaching Gaza, threatening the participants in a similar fashion as during earlier attempts to break the illegal siege on Gaza. In 2010, Israeli troops attacked a similar flotilla in international waters, killing ten of the activists onboard and detaining many others.

"Command the security forces to allow us to enter Gaza and avoid the use of force," read the letter from Ghattas.

Lapid: Flotilla actvisits are terror supporters

The boat is currently running parallel to Egypt's Mediterranean coastline. The boat's arrival in the area will be the culmination of a long term public campaign by the organizations involved to raise the Gaza issue in the international media. The flotilla is due to arrive in Gaza on Sunday or Monday, but it seems unlikely Israel will allow it to reach the Gaza coast.

Meanwhile, the fiery statements by several MKs, ministers, and Prime Minister Netanyahu himself have kept coming.

MK Yair Lapid attacked the flotilla Saturday, as "a form of provocation against the State of Israel of people who are anything but defenders of human rights."

In op-eds, church leaders say BDS is moral response to Netanyahu’s rejection of Palestinian statehood

Over the last day or so, three remarkable op-eds by church leaders have been published in U.S. regional newspapers in support of some measure of BDS, boycott, divestment and sanctions, to end the Israeli occupation of Palestine.

The op-eds are remarkable because they honor BDS as a tool, and two of them specifically reject the equation of BDS with anti-Semitism, a charge that cowed many non-Jewish activists in times gone by. And all three slam the rightwing Israeli government for defying international opinion or using the peace process to expand. So the churches must act, the leaders say.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This is very clever. By declaring BDS a moral crusade, these church leaders have invalidated the amendment tackled onto a trade bill by the US Congress which forbids Europe from engaging in political boycotts of Israel.

Vatican recognises state of Palestine; Israel irked

The Vatican signed a treaty with the “State of Palestine” on Friday, saying it hoped its legal recognition of the state would help stimulate peace with Israel and that the treaty itself would serve as a model for other Mideast countries.

Vatican Foreign Minister Paul Gallagher and his Palestinian counterpart, Riad al-Malki, signed the treaty at a ceremony inside the Vatican.

Israel expressed disappointment when the Vatican announced last month that it had reached final agreement with the “State of Palestine” on the treaty regulating the life of the Catholic Church in the Palestinian territories.

It repeated that regret in a Foreign Ministry statement on Friday, saying the move hurt peace prospects and would discourage the Palestinians from returning to direct negotiations.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Odd. I thought it was Israel that was avoiding those negotiations!

A Straight Look at the Jewish Lobby

For many years Israel has violated well established standards of international law and has defied numerous United Nations resolutions in its occupation of conquered lands, in extra-judicial killings, and in its repeated acts of military aggression.

Most of the world regards Israel’s policies, and especially its oppression of Palestinians, as illegal and outrageous. This international consensus is reflected, for example, in numerous UN resolutions condemning Israel, which have been approved with overwhelming majorities.

“The whole world,“ said United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan, “is demanding that Israel withdraw [from occupied Palestinian territories]. I don’t think the whole world… can be wrong.” [1]

FLASHBACK - Israel, Genocide, and the ‘Logic’ of Zionism

History is full of ironies: World War I, marketed to Americans as a "war to end all wars," paved the way for an even more massive slaughter. The invasion and conquest of Iraq – which was supposed to augur what George W. Bush hailed as a "global democratic revolution" – instead ushered in a new era of chaos, bloodshed, and tyranny in the region. And in the year 2014, the state of Israel, founded in large part as a reaction to the Holocaust, has embarked on a policy of genocide in Gaza.

The Israelis and their international amen corner are increasingly open about this: a recent article in the Times of Israel – since taken down – was quite explicit in averring that Israel’s "right of self-defense" includes the option of wiping out the entire population of Gaza:

Vatican signs historic accord with Palestine

The Vatican on Friday signed a historic first accord with Palestine, two years after officially recognising it as a state.

The accord, a treaty covering the life and activity of the Church in Palestine, was the first since the Vatican recognised the Palestinian state in February 2013.

The treaty, which took 15 years of negotiations to complete, was agreed in principle last month and bitterly condemned by Israel as a setback for the peace process.

The Vatican’s recognition of the state of Palestine followed a November 12 vote in favour of recognition by the UN General Assembly.

Vatican officials have described it as reflecting the Church’s desire to see the conflict in the Holy Land resolved by a “two-state” solution.

Vatican Treaty Recognizes a Palestinian State

The Vatican officially recognized a Palestinian state on Friday by signing a treaty and said it hoped the step would promote peace with Israel.

Vatican Foreign Minister Paul Gallagher said he hoped the Holy See's recognition "may in some way be a stimulus to bringing a definitive end to the long-standing Israeli-Palestinian conflict."

He signed the treaty with his Palestinian counterpart, Riad al-Malki, and said it could be a model for other Middle Eastern countries.
