True story behind Freedom Theatre's 'The Siege'

It seems nothing about Palestine ever escapes heated reactions, not least the Freedom Theatre’s latest production, The Siege. Conceived for a UK tour, the first in Britain by this dynamic theatre company from Jenin, it premiered in Manchester before opening in London on May 19th. In front of the venue, the Battersea Arts Centre, theatregoers were greeted by a Zionist group demonstrating and leafleting against the play. Yet again, the basic right of Palestinian freedom is threatened.

The Siege is based on the true story of Palestinian resistance fighters who sought refuge in the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem during the Second Intifada, in 2002. Alongside five armed fighters, one of whom is badly injured, are some 200 priests, nuns and civilians, clearly not seen in the play but represented by a priest who agrees to shelter and initially feed them.

Palestine to chair UNESCO meeting

Palestine was elected to chair the third Meeting of States Parties to the UNESCO 1970 Convention on Illicit Trafficking of Cultural Property for the first time earlier this week.

Palestine became the 195th full member of UNESCO in 2011 with the support of a large majority of countries.

Chairing a meeting of nearly 130 state parties has "both symbolic and practical" significance for Palestine, Mounir Anastas, deputy ambassador of Palestine to UNESCO, told the Anadolu Agency.

Did the Metropolitan Police send staff to Israel during last year's Gaza assault?

Last November, a post appeared on the blogging platform Medium which claimed that between March 1, 2014 and August 31, 2014 - a period of six months - some 80 employees of London's Metropolitan Police had "travelled to Israel."

This overlaps in part with Israel's unprecedented assault on the Gaza Strip, which lasted from July 8 to August 26. During 'Operation Protective Edge', Israeli armed forces killed some 2,100 Palestinians, including more than 500 children.

In the first four months of 2015, attorneys with Palestine Legal responded to 102 requests for legal assistance from students and faculty on college campuses across the country, including from Palestinian rights advocates smeared as “terrorists” or “supporters of terrorism” based solely on speech critical of Israeli policy.

24 incidents involving accusations of support for terrorism made against students or faculty, based solely on speech critical of Israeli policy.

A senior diplomat announced on Wednesday that Palestinians are to submit two lawsuits against Israel to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague on June 25.

“Palestinian Foreign Minister Reyad el-Malki is to head a high-ranking Palestinian delegation that comprises rights groups, and will submit the two suits against Israel to the international court on June 25,”

said Abu Zneid.

ISRAELI ARMY HAS PLANS TO KILL MORE HUMANELY

The military has considered using the non-lethal method in the West Bank that is already used by Israeli police, but doubts regarding its lethality prevented its use.

Controversy over the issue arose after the death of 16-year-old Mohammed Sinokrot in East Jerusalem last year, whose relatives claimed he was struck by a police rubber bullet.

dream

I was thinking how humanity could descend to such barbarity around the world. How could African migrants risk their lives to leave countries wrecked psychologically and economically by colonial Europeans to seek to arrive in the same continent that subjugated them? How could Myanmar’s Rohingya Muslims be slaughtered in the thousands by the majority Buddhists and surviving people end up in boats and sent back to starve and die at sea rejected by nearby countries including countries like Indonesia with Muslim majorities? How could relatives of Jewish holocaust survivors engage in racism and ethnic cleansing for native Palestinians while relatives of Armenian holocaust survivors lead amazingly rich productive caring lives? How could a very wealthy country like “Saudi Arabia” (the quotes are needed because it is an imposed name for a country stolen by the Saud Family) spend billions to support the US/Israeli agenda of destruction and mayhem in countries like Yemen and Syria?

When “good morning” is an order to kill: Israel’s attack on my neighborhood

From Breaking the Silence’s research, I know that an Israeli commander ordered his troops to blanket-bomb the area. When asked what the troops should target, he told them to pick whatever they wished. “Good morning al-Bureij,” he said to a two-way radio.

The government of French President François Hollande is renewing its efforts to fatally undermine fundamental Palestinian rights, particularly those of refugees.

Nakba and the Question of “Palestinian Strategy”

What makes the Nakba a particularly poignant and painful experience is the fact that it has never truly concluded. The original 750,000 who were removed or forced to flee their historical homeland have morphed to over five million, and those who became internally displaced in their own Palestinian homeland, later renamed the State of Israel, continue to fight for basic rights. This makes the Nakba a present political event, granted its historical origins.

Time for FIFA to show Israel the red card

The truth must be told from the outset: I hope Israel is suspended from FIFA.

A soccer ban doesn’t kill anyone. A boycott spills no blood. It is a legitimate weapon to establish justice and apply international law. Israel supported and supports boycotts, and encourages them: against Hamas, against Gaza, and, of course, against Iran. It even joined the boycott against South Africa, albeit in spite of itself. Now its turn has come.

The Never-Ending Nakba - From Gaza to Gaza Camp

Immediately preceding the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, the country that now demands others acknowledge it’s “right to exist” depopulated and destroyed over 400 Palestinian towns and villages, forcing the inhabitants to flee for their lives. The new state planted trees and established national parks over the ruins of dozens of villages where Israelis now spend quiet afternoons and enjoy picnics in the shade. The cries of the dead are drowned out by the laughter of children playing on the remains of ancient homes. The Arabic names of the destroyed villages have been erased. The Israeli state still clings to the myth of “A land without a people, for a people without a land,” and deny the Nakba took place, just as many Americans still deny an indigenous genocide in “our” country. Israel continues to criminalise marking Nakba Day

Each year on May 15, Palestinians across the world commemorate the Nakba (catastrophe), or the 1948 establishment of Israel that led to hundreds of thousands of Palestinians being displaced from their homeland.

The estimated 1.7 million Palestinians who carry Israeli citizenship and live in villages, towns and cities across the country are no exception. Each year, protests, marches, lectures and other events to mourn their ancestors' dispossession are held in Palestinian communities across Israel.

Yet, since 2011, Israeli legislation has made mourning the Nakba publicly difficult for Palestinians and others in Israel. The "Nakba Law" authorises Israel's finance minister to revoke funding from institutions that reject Israel's character as a "Jewish state" or mark the country's Independence Day as a day of mourning.

'Like spilled blood': 1st ever Gaza film festival rolls out red carpet among ruins

In eastern Gaza City, among ruins and memories of war and destruction, a red carpet was laid out for a film festival on human rights. The event was held amidst rubble in the Shujaiyeh neighborhood, where some 100 Palestinians died in last year's Gaza war.

The Karama ('Dignity' in Arabic) Human Rights Film Festival was the first of its kind to ever be held in Gaza – and the chosen location was just the “right place” to hold such an event, according to organizer Saud Aburamadan.

We stood there next to the destroyed mosque, surrounded by destroyed homes in every direction, and became clear that it was the right place to hold a film festival focused on human rights,” Aburamadan told +972 Magazine.

Will Israelis filmed killing Palestinian teens on Nakba Day get away with murder?

On 15 May 2014, an Israeli Border Police officer took aim at Nadim Nuwara and pulled the trigger of his M16 rifle.

The live bullet struck Nuwara, 17, in the chest and exited through his back, killing him at the scene. Roger Waters to Dionne Warwick: “You are showing yourself to be profoundly ignorant of what has happened in Palestine since 1947?

First, in my view, Dionne Warwick is a truly great singer. Secondly, I doubt not that she is deeply committed to her family and her fans.

But, ultimately, this whole conversation is not about her, her gig in Tel Aviv, or even her conception of boundaries and art, though I will touch on that conception later. This is about human rights and, more specifically, this is about the dystopia that can develop, as it has in Israel, when society lacks basic belief in equal human value, when it strays from the ability to feel empathy for our brothers and sisters of different faiths, nationalities, creeds or colors.

It strikes me as deeply disingenuous of Ms. Warwick to try to cast herself as a potential victim here. The victims are the occupied people of Palestine with no right to vote and the unequal Palestinian citizens of Israel, including Bedouin Israeli citizens of the village of al-Araqib, which has now been bulldozed 83 times by order of the Israeli government.

INCITEMENT TO VIOLENCE GETS STAMP OF APPROVAL FROM ISRAELI SUPREME COURT

Thousands of Israelis waving Israeli flags participate in the annual Jerusalem Day march of flags entering the Old City through the Muslim Quarter and making its way to the Western Wall. Jerusalem Day marks the reunification of the city following the 1967 Six-Day War.

Last year, marchers were caught on video shouting “Death to Arabs” and “Muhammad is dead.”

Aipac Wants Congress to Criminalize BDS

Of all the lame-brained, lumpen-brained, hare-brained schemes emanating from Aipac’s lobby shop, this is one of the truly lamest. As Israel forms the most dangerous, aggressive, racist government in its history, Aipac thought this was a good time to remind the American people of that by conniving to amend an already contentious fast-track trade bill with a new amendment that would criminalize BDS in the U.S.

Allow Israel to kill more civilians, says British colonel

Former British army officer Colonel Richard Kemp was described by a leading anti-Palestinian lawyer as “one of the Jewish state’s greatest allies” at a conference in Jerusalem last week.

At that conference, Kemp argued for Israeli impunity from war crimes accusations. He also descried himself as a “thug” who liked to fight and had disobeyed army rules of engagement.

He argued that the laws of wars and the rules of engagement for “democratic armies” should be loosened to allow “maximum possible freedom of action.”

136 Nations Recognize A Palestinian State – Only Obama Stands In The Way Of Full Global Recognition

Will a UN Security Council resolution formally recognizing the establishment of a Palestinian state be passed by the end of 2015? Now that the Vatican has formally recognized a Palestinian state, there is a tremendous amount of international momentum for precisely such a UN Security Council resolution. In fact, France plans to push really hard for one by the end of this year.

Israel’s double standard in helping the needy abroad

Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, was quick to congratulate Israeli soldiers on their relief efforts in Nepal, where an earthquake late last month claimed many thousands of lives.

Israel’s humanitarian concern for the victims of disasters, however, looks more cynical when set alongside its record once the TV cameras depart. Israel’s international aid budget is paltry compared to that of other developed nations.

Vatican officially recognizes Palestine, while Israel fumes

I bet somebody is really pissed!

The Vatican has become the latest country to recognize the state of Palestine, after a new treaty was finalized on Wednesday. Unsurprisingly Israel has hit out at the move, saying that it damages prospects for peace in the region.

The treaty, which was agreed, though has yet to be formally signed states the Vatican has switched its diplomatic allegiance from the Palestinian Liberation Organization to the state of Palestine.

A TRAGIC TALE OF LIFE AND DEATH UNDER THE OCCUPATION

France bans Pro-Palestinian rallies – assigns criminal penalties and hefty fines

This astonishing act of censorship happened only two days after the killings at Charlie Hebdo in January, but I hadn’t heard about it until now.

Incredibly, not only did France’s interior minister ban Pro-Palestinian demonstrations, he assigned criminal penalties not only for those who participate in the rallies, but also those who publish details about these demonstrations on social media!!!

Webmaster's Commentary:

Merde!

Israel’s Fascist Democracy

For years, Israel and its powerful lobby in the US and Europe have presented the Jewish state as the model of democracy in a region typically referred to as “anti-democratic.” Naturally, many pro-Palestine activists, among countless others, have long argued that the central principles of Israel’s Jewish supremacist ideology, its legal structure, and its society broadly represent anything but democracy.

Such voices have correctly noted that Israel’s policies and very essence run counter to the traits traditionally associated with democracy: the rule of law, respect for minorities, and protection of civil and human rights. While no objective analyst could reasonably dismiss those important points, recent developments in Israeli politics do point to a disturbing, and painfully ironic, trend: Israel’s loving embrace of outright fascism is, to a large degree, an expression of its democracy.

Israel reimposes decades-long sentence on hunger striker released in exchange

Issawi’s arrest was part of a wider campaign of collective punishment imposed on Palestinians across the occupied West Bank after three Israeli youths went missing while hitchhiking there. Though Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the country’s military-intelligence apparatus knew that the youths were killed shortly after their abduction, it concealed information from the public and launched the largest military operation in the West Bank in more than a decade.

The California legislature is once again attempting to formally conflate opposition to Zionism with anti-Semitism.

Student troubled by New York Times reporter’s “Jewish litmus test”

Students interviewed for a New York Times article about campus Palestine solidarity activism say they were asked leading and inappropriate questions by reporters. In one case, a student says he was subjected to a troubling “Jewish litmus test.”

The students who spoke to The Electronic Intifada also expressed surprise that none of the statements they gave appeared in what they see as a heavily skewed article, which appeared on Saturday with the headline “Campus Debates on Israel Drive a Wedge Between Jews and Minorities.”

Lead reporter Jennifer Medina, who co-wrote the story with Tamar Lewin and Ronnie Cohen, referred questions to New York Times assistant national editor Jennifer Kingson.
