Palestine solidarity campaigners dominate annual meeting of G4S

The annual general meeting of the security company G4S descended into chaos on Thursday as board members faced a grilling over the firm’s involvement in Israel’s occupation.

For the third year in a row, the firm’s AGM was taken over by human rights campaigners directing tough questions at chief executive Ashley Almanza and chairperson John Connolly.

Campaigners from groups including the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, London Palestine Action, Stop G4S and War on Want, who had bought a share each in the company in order to attend, far outnumbered those whose shares were bought for profit.

Claiming to preserve Jerusalem, Israeli archaeologists wreck Palestinian heritage

Israel’s National Planning Committee has overseen an appeal by several bodies who oppose the further expansion of the powerful settler group Elad’s control over archaeological sites in Silwan, a congested Palestinian neighborhood located just meters away from al-Aqsa Mosque and the walls of the Old City in occupied East Jerusalem. With the blessing of the authorities, Elad plans to build a giant new visitors center on top of an excavation site.

Elad (a Hebrew acronym for “To the City of David”) is a private organization that has become the de facto administrator of some of the most controversial archaeological sites in Jerusalem. Elad was founded in 1986 with the explicit goal of removing Palestinians from East Jerusalem and settling Jews in their place. It accomplishes this by providing assistance in the purchase or seizure of Palestinian properties.

Ali Abunimah on Israel’s national panic about BDS

Israel in Desperation

Representatives of the Palestine Football Association removed their request for a vote at FIFA (The Fédération Internationale de Football Association; English: International Federation of Association Football) to expel Israel, at the very last minute. Time to end Israel's impunity

Last summer, while visiting our family in Shuafat, a neighborhood in occupied East Jerusalem, my son Tariq was chased, zip-tied, and beaten unconscious by Israeli police officers as he watched a protest. The protest was in response to the kidnapping and killing of his 16-year-old friend and cousin, Muhammad Abu Khdeir, by Israeli settlers the day before.

As the policemen lifted my unconscious son's body away to prison, two officers continued to kick his limp body and face. In prison, he had to wait six hours before receiving medical attention. And we had to wait several months for him to be cleared of wrongdoing in the case. When I first saw Tariq after the beating, I did not recognize him; his face was badly bruised and his eyes were nearly swollen shut. I thought he was dead. I wanted to get closer to him, to see if he was breathing, to let him know I was there. But the hospital officials barred me from entering his room.

Adelson Tabloid Slams Obama for Listening to ‘Court Jews’ in Questioning Israel’s Credibility

President Barack Obama gave an interview on Israeli television on Tuesday in which he said that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s position on rejecting a Palestinian state as long as he is in power is damaging Israel’s credibility.

Netanyahu tried to retract his campaign pledge after he won the election on the basis of it, but that just made him look sleazy, and anyway he didn’t really take it back. Nobody thinks Israel will agree to a Palestinian state as long as Netanyahu has anything to say about it.

IDF strikes Gaza after at least two rockets fired toward southern Israel

Israel Air Force jets struck Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip early Thursday morning, after at least two rockets were fired from the Strip at southern Israel on Wednesday evening. Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon vowed to "strike harder if we must," to stop sporadic rocket fire from resuming.

No casualties or injuries by the rocket fire were reported. Rocket sirens were sounded in several communities in southern Israel near the northern Gaza border. Two rockets exploded in an open area near the Gaza border, the Sdot Negev Regional Council reported, though the IDF said it is still searching for the rockets' landing sites.

After the rocket fire, Israel Air Force jets struck three "terror infrastructure" targets in the Gaza Strip, according to the Israel Defense Forces.

Israeli defense officials believe that the militants responsible for the rocket fire belong to a "rogue group."

Webmaster's Commentary:

In other words, this is the usual Israeli pattern. Use agents provocateurs to launch untraceable home made rockets into empty dirt lots in Israel to justify air strikes and naval bombardment of Gaza.

For Palestinians, Tantura, the name of a coastal village south of Haifa that was once home to 1,700 inhabitants, has become a byword for the darkest episodes of the Nakba (Arabic for catastrophe), the ethnic cleansing of 1948.

In an interview a few years back, Philip Weiss, the chief editor of the Jewish pro-Palestinian website Mondoweiss, admitted to me in plain terms that, in his eyes, pro-Palestinian activism serves "Jewish self interests."

Such a Jewish activity conveys a (misleading) image of Jewish political pluralism. It suggests that not all Jews are "bad," Jewish politics can even be ethical and universal.

Evidently, Jewish liberals are angry with me for unveiling the deceit that is embedded in such an attitude. They have invested a great effort attempting to silence me, and for a good reason - I have produced some persuasive arguments suggesting that Jewish solidarity is not the solution, it is actually the core of the problem.

Israel Is A Discredit To America — Paul Craig Roberts

Jeffrey St. Clair, one of the few remaining Western journalists with a moral conscience, describes the latest Israeli horror to which we are all accomplices.

The Israel Lobby tries to prevent reports and criticism of Israel’s crimes against the Palestinians by branding every critic of every policy of the extreme right-wing Israeli government an “anti-semite.” In other words, if you object to Israeli armed forces shooting down Palestinian children in the streets and then bombing the funerals of the kids the Israelis have already murdered, you hate Jews and are an anti-Semite.

The success that the Israel Lobby has enjoyed in imposing this twisted logic on Congress, the White House, the media, the universities and the insouciant American public is astonishing. As a consequence, Americans are no longer answerable to Christian morality but to the evil that the Israel Lobby represents.

US Cries FIFA Foul to Penalize Russia

The melodrama had the air of a politically driven media campaign for maximum publicity.

?But the real goal of the full-frontal assault on FIFA, which involved dawn raids at a five-star hotel in Swiss city Zurich, seems more to do with American political purpose to damage Russia’s World Cup plans. That objective has to be seen in the context of Washington’s aim to isolate and destabilize Moscow in an ongoing geopolitical battle that is currently centred on Ukraine.

Russia’s World Cup plans appear to be now similarly targeted for an ulterior political agenda. Within hours of the US-launched arrests of FIFA officials in Zurich, the football federation was obliged to state that the forthcoming World Cup in Russia was not in jeopardy of cancellation over related claims of wrongdoing in the selection of that venue.

The United Nations is seeking to put the Israeli military on its blacklist over the regime’s aggressive policies against the Palestinian people, particularly children.

The move is recommended by Leila Zerrougui, the UN secretary-general's special representative for children and armed conflict.

Israel 'pressures Ban Ki-moon' to get off UN list of children's rights violators in wars

Israel is allegedly pulling diplomatic strings to pressurize the UN Secretary-General to exclude it from an annual list of countries accused of violating children's rights in armed conflicts. Israel denies the allegations.

Despite the slaughter of hundreds of Palestinian children in the IDF Israeli operation in Gaza in 2014, Tel Aviv wants to somehow preserve a squeaky clean image and is putting pressure on the UN central office to that end.

Initially, the draft of the document prepared by the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon’s special envoy for children, Leila Zerrougui, included the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on the list for attacking schools and hospitals in the Gaza Strip conflict last year, Reuters reported.

An opposing side in the conflict, the Palestinian group Hamas, has also been added to the list.

WRONGFULLY TREATING ACADEMIC DEBATE AS ANTI-SEMITISM

The principle of academic freedom at our universities is under attack by those seeking to shield Israel from criticism by silencing dissent, shutting down discussion and imposing a stifling atmosphere of intimidation at the University of California, in particular. A coordinated set of petitions, including a letter signed by 57 rabbis, asks UC administrators to adopt the State Department’s definition of anti-Semitism as a means to “accurately identify” and “publicly condemn” it in campus debate, protest and discussion. That problematic definition conflates principled criticism of Israeli policies with genuine anti-Semitism; if the university accedes to this demand, such criticism — and academic freedom — could be suppressed by administrative fiat.

Will FIFA's scandal eclipse Palestinian bid to boot Israel from world soccer?

The allegations are damning, but frankly, they couldn’t have come at a better time for Israel. Until Wednesday, much of the coverage of the FIFA Congress surrounded whether delegates would vote to suspend Israel from world soccer. The Palestinian Football Association is introducing the motion to suspend Israel, accusing it of unjustly restricting Palestinian soccer players’ freedom of movement and claiming that Israel’s West Bank settlement teams violate FIFA rules. Israeli officials have called the effort blatantly political and said that the Palestinians’ complaints all concern Israel’s security forces — not Israel’s soccer teams.

For Israel to be suspended, three quarters of delegates would need to approve the motion. If that were a long shot before, it’s even more unlikely now.

Foreign Policy Diary ‘State of Palestine’

Than on Wednesday Israeli aircraft struck a number of sites in the Gaza Strip from the air early. Gaza residents said missiles struck several locations throughout the Gaza Strip, including places used as training camps by Islamic Jihad militants on sites that had been Israeli colonies before Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005. Earlier, unknown Palestinian militants fired a rocket late Tuesday from the enclave which landed near the Israeli port city of Ashdod. It was the longest-range militant rocket strike since a ceasefire which ended last summer’s Israeli assault on Gaza. There was no immediate claim of responsibility in Gaza for the rocket launching. However, Israeli media speculated that infighting among Islamic Jihad militants in Gaza Strip may have precipitated the rocket firing without the permission of Gaza’s Islamist Hamas rulers.

Palestinian child loses eye from rubber-coated bullet fired by Israel

A Palestinian child from occupied East Jerusalem has lost an eye after being shot in the head with a rubber-coated steel bullet fired by an Israeli soldier.

Yahiya al-Amudi, 10, was struck by the bullet as he walked near an Israeli military checkpoint in Shuafat refugee camp on Thursday last week. The boy was subsequently hospitalized “with a fractured skull, jaw and left ear and had surgery to remove his left eye,” Ma’an News Agency reports. Al-Amudi was described as being in a critical condition.

Rubber-coated steel bullets are among Israel’s so-called arsenal of “non-lethal weapons.” The Israeli human rights group B’Tselem has referred to them, however, as “less fatal” weapons.

The Israel Defense Forces issued a short statement saying it had struck militant infrastructure in the southern Gaza Strip, in response to the rocket fire. The statement concluded by placing responsibility for the firing of the rocket on Hamas.

We have seen this same pattern over and over. An Israeli asset launches a single rocket across the fence that hits absolutely nothing, followed by a massive Israeli attack on the people of Gaza.

A Poem On War

Beyond the count of years I walked the world,

and my children built their shrines to me.

Decades and centuries and millennia pass,

and still the shrines are built.

Temples insubstantial to men,

clear to my eyes.

No foundations or walls or roofs,

but shrines nonetheless.

Holy ground, consecrated

Today, every day, somewhere in the world,

the earth is prepared for my coming.

My hallowed grounds are everywhere.

In valleys and on mountains,

on broad plains and deep in hidden passes,

in deserts, on city streets.

Nameless, unremembered places.

The Roots of Christian Zionism: How Scofield Sowed Seeds of Apostasy

Ever wonder why so many Christians support America's many wars, especially in the Middle East? A new Christianity has emerged from the Twentieth Century called Christian Zionism or what could be called, "Angry Evangelicalism," or "Dispensationalism on Steroids." What motivates a nationally known, evangelical preacher like John Hagee to call for a preemptive strike against Iran when it is contrary to what Jesus taught and commanded his followers to do? This "Roots of Zionism" presentation may be the first of its kind with a factual explanation of how Christianity's latest apostate epidemic was launched with the publishing of C. I. Scofield's reference Bible in 1909, and the influence of the notes in it.

True story behind Freedom Theatre's 'The Siege'

It seems nothing about Palestine ever escapes heated reactions, not least the Freedom Theatre’s latest production, The Siege. Conceived for a UK tour, the first in Britain by this dynamic theatre company from Jenin, it premiered in Manchester before opening in London on May 19th. In front of the venue, the Battersea Arts Centre, theatregoers were greeted by a Zionist group demonstrating and leafleting against the play. Yet again, the basic right of Palestinian freedom is threatened.

The Siege is based on the true story of Palestinian resistance fighters who sought refuge in the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem during the Second Intifada, in 2002. Alongside five armed fighters, one of whom is badly injured, are some 200 priests, nuns and civilians, clearly not seen in the play but represented by a priest who agrees to shelter and initially feed them.

Did the Metropolitan Police send staff to Israel during last year's Gaza assault?

Last November, a post appeared on the blogging platform Medium which claimed that between March 1, 2014 and August 31, 2014 - a period of six months - some 80 employees of London's Metropolitan Police had "travelled to Israel."

This overlaps in part with Israel's unprecedented assault on the Gaza Strip, which lasted from July 8 to August 26. During 'Operation Protective Edge', Israeli armed forces killed some 2,100 Palestinians, including more than 500 children.
