Ghost-like images haunt New York display by Palestinian artists

Five artists of Arab origin feature in the exhibition Artistic Weapons of Mass Communication at Brooklyn’s Five Myles Gallery.

Running until 24 May, the show includes the work of Palestinian American artists Mary Tuma, John Halaka and Rajie Cook, as well as Arab Iranian Samira Abbassy and Egyptian Ganzeer.

Curator Souhad Rafey has said: “With the Middle East in focus, the show reflects opposition to wars of aggression, military occupations of foreign lands and the necessary change to the destructive reality of ‘empire as a way of life.’”

Jerusalem teen killed by Israeli forces in “cold blood,” family says

The 17-year-old was shot dead by Israel’s Border Police as he allegedly ran toward soldiers at a checkpoint in occupied Jerusalem’s al-Tur neighborhood, late Friday night.

Israeli occupation forces claimed that he was wielding a knife, an accusation his family dismisses as a fabrication intended to cover up a killing in “cold blood.”

According to the boy’s mother, her son had gone out that night to attend a wedding party, and was not carrying any sort of weapon.

Israel to build 77 new settlement units in East Jerusalem

The Israeli government has issued tenders for 77 new Jewish-only settlement units in occupied East Jerusalem, an Israeli NGO said Monday.

According to leftist Peace Now movement, which campaigns against Israeli settlement activities, 36 of the new tenders are for Neve Yaakov settlement and 41 for Pisgat Zeev.

The movement slammed the move as an "indicator" of the policies of the new government that is in the making under outgoing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose Likud party won the country's parliamentary elections last month.

Earlier this year, the group said that Israeli settlement construction in occupied Palestinian territories by increased by 40 percent during 2014.

“Professors for Israel” Try To Shut down The Lancet

Academia is far from the bastion of free thinking and free speech it would like to claim for itself, as a newly confected “row” involving the leading medical journal The Lancet confirms.

Recently Southampton University in the UK caved in on hosting an important conference examining Israel and international law, following an intensive campaign of intimidation from Israeli apologists.

Now some 400 medical professors are blackmailing Reed Elsevier, publishers of The Lancet, by threatening to boycott its publications unless the company sacks editor Richard Horton – or as they duplicitously phrase it, “enforce appropriate ethical standards of editorship”.

By refusing to publish papers or peer review them, the professors, including five Nobel winners, hope Reed Elsevier will capitulate from fear that such a boycott might bring it to its knees.

Thousands Attend Funeral For Palestinian Accused Of Stabbing Israeli Soldier

Thousands of Palestinians attended the funeral of Mahmoud Abu Jheisha on Sunday, after the 20-year-old was shot dead by Israeli forces outside the Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron when he allegedly stabbed an Israeli soldier.

The funeral procession began at the Amari Mosque in Abu Jheisha's hometown of Idhna, west of Hebron, where family and friends paid their final respects, before he was taken to be buried in the town cemetery.

Participants reportedly chanted slogans condemning Israeli crimes and calling for an end to Israeli practices as part of the occupation.

Abu Jheisha was shot dead by Israeli forces after allegedly stabbing an Israeli soldier at the Ibrahimi Mosque in the southern West Bank city of Hebron.

Witnesses told Ma'an that he stabbed the soldiers a number of times before Israeli forces shot him dead.
The Israeli soldier, who was moved to a Jerusalem hospital, received stab wounds in his head and chest, and his condition was described as moderate.

Lancet medical journal accused of ‘hate speech’ on Israeli aggression in Gaza

A venerable British medical journal has been targeted by 500 doctors worldwide over its coverage of the humanitarian crisis caused by the Israel-Palestine conflict. It has been Britain’s most trusted medical journal for almost two hundred years.

The controversy arose after the Lancet, an internationally renowned publication, released an article deemed to be deeply critical of Israel’s conduct in Gaza.

I don't know about you, but I would not want to be treated by any doctor loyal to a foreign government. In the United States, 400,000 people die every year from "medical mistakes" making it the third largest killer, behind cancer and heart disease. I have to wonder if those "medical mistakes" are biased towards those people that criticize Israel!

Thousands of Palestinian citizens of Israel marched in protest on Thursday as their Jewish compatriots partied, each group in its own way marking the 67th anniversary of the State of Israel's founding.
The anniversary of Israel's declaration of independence on May 14, 1948 is celebrated according to the Jewish calendar, this year falling on April 23.

Palestinians usually mark the day on May 15 by commemorating what they call the Nakba -- or "catastrophe" -- of Israel's creation.

But thousands of Palestinian citizens of Israel, many waving Palestinian flags, gathered Thursday in the Galilee for a protest march timed to coincide with the Israeli celebrations.
It centered on the ruins of Al-Haditha, near Tiberias, one of nearly 400 Palestinian villages destroyed in the war that erupted after Israel's founding.

"Our grandfathers who suffered displacement asked us not to sell our land and to return to it and not give up," activist Hammad Abu al-Haija told the crowd.

Palestinians denied medicines in prisons equipped by G4S, says new report

One former prisoner told Corporate Watch that access to medicine is currently the most significant struggle prisoners are fighting: “Prisoners can spend months trying to get medicines for a particular illness and when they finally get some it is hardly ever the right one.”

“Painkillers and drinking water are the only solutions they give medical problems,” a prisoner from Beit Hanoun in Gaza told Corporate Watch.

When this man was arrested in 2006 he was being treated for chronic heart problems. Yet when the doctor examined him at Ashkelon prison before handing him over to interrogators, he said that he “would not be responsible for what happens during interrogation.”

The prisoner spent 35 days without any medical attention, enduring up to seventeen hours of interrogation at a time. When he was finally taken to a prison hospital, a guard deliberately slammed a door on his legs, brushing that cruelty off to another guard by saying, “he is a dog, don’t worry about him.”

“Death to the Arabs” march forces its way through occupied Jerusalem

This disturbing video shows Israeli youths, escorted by police and occupation forces, marching through the Old City of Jerusalem chanting “mavet la’aravim” – “death to the Arabs” – and other cries of hate.

According to the racism-monitoring website Kifaya, the 19 April march was part of the monthly “Tour of the Gates” by Jewish extremists through the Muslim Quarter of the Old City.

As part of the event, held at the beginning of every month according to the Jewish calendar, the one-kilometer-long route is blocked to Palestinians, and businesses and stores must close, Kifaya says.

Palestinians are forbidden from leaving their homes during the march.

Ben Cardin (D-MD) is expected to introduce an amendment to a bill in the Senate Finance Committee Wednesday that would demand that the Obama Administration pressure Europe not to enforce policies against the Israeli occupation of the West Bank. Sony Pictures Entertainment co-chair Amy Pascal was proud to add her name to a letter with some 200 other Hollywood big wigs supporting Israel last summer in the midst of its bombardment of the occupied Gaza Strip.

But leaked emails released recently by Wikileaks show that behind the scenes company executives were worried about reports associating the Sony brand with the Israeli assault that left more than 2,200 people, 547 of them children, dead.

On 19 August, Stevan Bernard, Sony Pictures Entertainment’s head of corporate security wrote to David Diamond, executive assistant to company chairman and CEO Michael Lynton, to inform him about a media report “that Sony CCTV’s [sic] were being used as a part of the guidance system for Israeli rockets that were bombing Gaza.”

“In fact,” Bernard wrote, “they held up part of the camera housing for all to see.”

Israeli leaders refuse to meet Carter because of ‘anti-Israel’ views

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have turned down a request from former US President Jimmy Carter to meet during his upcoming visit to the occupied Palestinian territories because of Carter’s 'anti-Israel' stance, a report says.

According to an unnamed Israeli official, both leaders refused to meet Carter following consultations between the Israeli foreign ministry and the national security council of the premier’s office, Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported on Monday.

The foreign ministry urged Rivlin and Netanyahu to refrain from meeting the 90-year-old due to his "anti-Israeli stance" over the last few years, according to the official.

American Jews Should Have a New Goal — Recognizing Palestine

Now is not the time for despair among liberal American Jewish supporters of Israel. Neither justice nor the love of Israel can accommodate resignation. Rather, we must respond to the Middle Eastern reality with one important move: urge our own government to recognize Palestine.

Here’s why. Benjamin Netanyahu’s election-eve abandonment of the two-state solution fits in with a well-worn right-wing Zionist belief that the Palestinians must be worn down by a long, hard occupation or defeated in the next major war. But even if such a strategy were just, it would be nearly impossible to pull off. It depends on the complicity of the United Nations, Europe and the United States — not to mention Russia and China.
