Palestinians facing upsurge in Israeli repression

Israel’s attacks on Palestinians are continuing, as tensions increase in Jerusalem and beyond.

Israeli Prime Minister, Netanyahu, has announced the reintroduction of punitive house demolitions, an inflammatory and illegal act – whilst a further 200 settlement units have just been approved in East Jerusalem. This week Israel bombed a Palestinian fishing boat off the coast of Gaza, as attacks on fishermen become an increasingly common event. The UN are reporting a spike in the number of Palestinians with their homes demolished by Israel. Now Israel’s impunity looks set to continue with Israel refusing to cooperate with the UN Inquiry into the war on Gaza.

EU must cease "material support" for Israel’s crimes, say leading trade unions

More than 300 political parties, trade unions and campaign groups have called for the suspension of a key agreement between Israel and the European Union.

The appeal urges the EU to freeze the “association agreement” with Israel. That deal, which entered into force in 2000, facilitates largely unrestricted trade between the EU and Israel and allows Israel to participate in a wide range of the Union’s programs.

Webmaster's Commentary:

So the EU is as much a sell-out to Israel as the US is. Imagine my shock.

Israeli settlers torch mosque, copies of the Quran in West Bank

A group of Israeli settlers broke in and torched a mosque in the Palestinian village of al-Mughayyir near Ramallah in the occupied West Bank early Wednesday, locals told Ma’an news agency, hours after settlers attempted to assault several Palestinian security officers in Nablus.

Witnesses, who went to the mosque at around 4:40 am to perform dawn prayer, said the settlers burnt 12 copies of the Quran, Islam’s holy book, and set the carpets of the first floor of the two-story building on fire.

Racist slogans were also spray painted on the walls of the mosque, witnesses added.

The same mosque has been targeted by Israeli settlers before, locals told Ma’an.

“Civility”: Israel Lobby’s New Weapon Against Free Speech on US Campuses

As I was driving through Indiana en route to Michigan this weekend, I saw this billboard for a local sheriff’s election campaign. There, above the uniformed police officer with his military-style crew cut, is the slogan “Return to Civility.”

It seemed the perfect metaphor for what “civility” has come to mean on US campuses: the forceful policing, at the behest of Israel lobby groups, of any discourse or activism critical of Israel.

In the wake of Israel’s latest Gaza massacre, the civility police are cracking down hard. Most notoriously, administrators and trustees at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have used the excuse of “civility” to fire Steven Salaita for his strong criticisms of, among other things, Israel’s slaughter of hundreds of children in Gaza.

But civility crackdowns are now breaking out across the country.

HOW A NON ISSUE CAN LEAD TO A WAR IN ISRAEL

Anyone who wants to track the progress Israel has made on the steep slope toward fanaticism, religiosity and backwardness must examine its relationship to the Temple Mount. Anyone who insists on labeling Israel a modern Western country can’t ignore the extraordinary change that has taken place in recent years. And anyone who still thinks this is a nonreligious society must heed the dark and insane forces that motivate it.

In no country in the West — which Israel pretends to belong to, more and more in vain — does an archeological site turn into an “existential foundation” and excuse for bloodshed. In no country in the West is holiness a matter of policy.

AMERICAN LABOUR BLOCKS THE BOATS FOR PALESTINE

This August, during five days and four nights of demonstrations at the Port of Oakland, a diverse group of pro-Palestine and social justice activists under the banner of the Block the Boat coalition picketed several berths where the Israeli cargo ship Zim Piraeus attempted to dock. Activists returned to the port whenever workers were dispatched to unload it—in some cases in the middle of the night. Their numbers, which fluctuated between dozens and thousands, were not always sufficient to physically block all entrances to the vessel. Yet the action succeeded due to the support of Oakland’s longshoremen, members of the International Longshore Workers Union (ILWU) Local 10, who refused to cross the community picket lines. Even when police surrounded and split protestors on multiple occasions, workers refused to proceed and unload the ship. The ship eventually left port, unable to unload most of its cargo.

Violence spreads across Israel after shooting in Galilee

Months of simmering violence between Israelis and Palestinians in East Jerusalem spread to Israeli Arab towns this weekend after police shot and killed a 22-year-old man in the Galilee town of Kufr Kana, apparently as he was running away.

In their original statements about the death on Friday night police said Kheir Hamdan was shot when he tried to stab an officer during an attempt to arrest him for allegedly throwing a stun grenade in the town, near Nazareth.

However, CCTV footage of the shooting shows Hamdan tried to strike a police car several times with an object in his hand – allegedly the knife – but officers were inside, with Hamdan posing no immediate threat to them. When a police officer opens the door, Hamdan is seen retreating. It is at this point he is shot.

Israel to confiscate 3,200 acres of Palestinian land near Jerusalem

Israeli authorities have delivered orders to the village of Beit Iksa north of Jerusalem ordering the confiscation of 12,852 dunums (3,176 acres) of Palestinian land, locals said on Saturday.

Locals told Ma’an that soldiers deployed at the military checkpoint at the entrance to the village delivered confiscation orders signed by the Israeli military commander in the West Bank Nitzan Alon that gave them until Dec. 31, 2017 to remain on their land.

The third intifada is here

Periodic situation evaluations of the Israel Defense Forces’ (IDF) highest command echelons warned that the harsh economic situation, lack of a diplomatic horizon and overall feeling of frustration and that there is no way out are likely to be the catalysts. Shin Bet assessments disseminated in 2013 even showed worrisome data regarding growing unrest in the West Bank, and painted the picture of the lone terrorist going out on his own to carry out an attack without the backing of organizational infrastructure. These assessments even led to closer security cooperation between Israel and the Palestinian Authority with the goal of detecting and thwarting the first signs of terrorist organization if and when they appear on the ground.

But apparently the Israeli security system didn't imagine that the third intifada it had anticipated, warned against and prepared for would erupt specifically in Jerusalem, and with such intensity.

The situation in Jerusalem is 'out of control'

The clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinian citizens, and protest demonstrations quickly escalated since Wednesday's Israeli attack of the building of the Aqsa mosque compound, and Ibrahim Akkari's run over, who was immediately shot in Jerusalem.

Clashes in Jerusalem and the West Bank have been successive, after Akkari's funeral in Jerusalem, which Israeli occupation allowed only 35 members of his family to attend.

The funeral limitation aggravated the clashes all over Jerusalem neighborhoods, where two Palestinian citizens were injured by Israeli bullets and one Israeli border guard was injured of stone throwing in Shu'fat refugee camp south occupied Jerusalem.

Clashes took place in Issawiya, Hizma and Al-Toor neighborhoods south Jerusalem, where Palestinians utilized fireworks and stones to defend themselves.

If Israel Outlaws Palestinian Political Voices, Declare One State

The Israeli state prosecutor will open a case against Zoabi for “criminal incitement” because the police provocatively assigned two Israeli Palestinian female officers to provoke her at one of her public appearances. How 'peace envoy' Tony Blair enables Israeli raids in illegally occupied West Bank

WORDS CAN lose their meaning when Tony Blair speaks. Collecting his “philanthropist of the year” award from GQ magazine, Blair recently said he could feel the “pulse of progress beating a little harder.”

Judging by the pronouncements he has made as a Middle East “peace envoy,” Blair’s definition of “progress” appears different from the standard one.

In 2010, Blair hailed a tiny easing of Israel’s siege on Gaza as a “significant change.” The following year he praised Hosni Mubarak, the Egyptian dictator who facilitated that siege, as a “force for good.”

And earlier this month, Blair claimed that John Kerry was “absolutely tireless” in his efforts to promote peace, conveniently forgetting that the US secretary of state had publicly endorsed Israel’s attack on Gaza during the summer.

Amnesty: Israel committed war crimes in Gaza Strip

OCCUPIED JERUSALEM: Amnesty International Wednesday accused Israel of committing war crimes during the war in the Gaza Strip this summer, saying it displayed “callous indifference” in attacks on family homes in the densely populated coastal area.

The Gaza war left more than 2,100 Palestinians dead, including many civilians according to Palestinian and U.N. officials. Israel says the number of militants killed was much higher and accuses Hamas of using civilians as human shields. On the Israeli side, 66 soldiers and six civilians were killed.

Amnesty said in a report that “Israeli forces killed scores of Palestinian civilians in attacks targeting houses full of families, which in some cases have amounted to war crimes.”

Many Injuries Reported as Israeli soldiers Invade Al-Aqsa Mosque

Dozens of Israeli soldiers invaded, on Wednesday morning, the grounds of the Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied Jerusalem, assaulted the worshipers with concussion grenades, gas bombs and rubber-coated metal bullets, and invaded the main mosque within the compound.

The Maan News Agency said dozens of soldiers invaded the yards of the mosque through the al-Magharba Gate and the Chain Gate (Bab as-Silsila) and assaulted dozens of worshipers who managed to reach the mosque yards.

Sheikh Azzam al-Khatib, head of the Islamic Waqf and Endowment in Jerusalem, stated that dozens of soldiers invaded the al-Qibli mosque while heavily armed.

Repeated failures compound Netanyahu’s Al-Aqsa predicament

The recent closure of the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem by the Israeli government constitutes yet more evidence that peace between Israel and the Palestinians has never been more distant.

The Al-Aqsa mosque, located in Jerusalem’s Old City, is the third holiest site in Islam. It sits within an enclosed compound known as the Noble Sanctuary, which also includes the Dome of the Rock, an Islamic shrine built on the site of the sacred stone which is believed to mark the place from where the Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven. The Dome of the Rock is also believed by Jewish scholars to be the location of the first and second temples, both of which were destroyed – the first by the Babylonians in 586 BCE, the second by the Romans in 70 CE. Within Judaism the entire area, including Al-Aqsa, is known as Temple Mount and is equally as sacred.

Israeli settlements: 'Unfortunate' or illegal?

Answering a question on November 3 about Israel's new construction plans in East Jerusalem, the US State Department spokeswoman said they were "unfortunate". Why didn't she say "illegal"?

There is pretty much a consensus among international lawyers, except in Israel, that the Israeli settlements in the occupied territories including East Jerusalem are illegal. The basis for this is article 49 of the fourth Geneva Convention adopted in 1949: "The Occupying Power shall not deport or transfer parts of its own civilian population into the territory it occupies."

Israel, it appears, has no more right to build settlements than the UK or the US would have had to build British or American settlements in Iraq after the 2003 war.

89 Palestine families wiped out by Israel’s Gaza campaign

At least 89 entire families have been killed in Gaza since Israel started its military campaign, Palestinian health officials said. The Judeh family, a woman and her four children, died after an airstrike hit their house reportedly without warning.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Israel is still justifying this latest war crime on the basis of the three murdered teenagers in the West Bank by the "terrorist" group HAMAS, even though the local police in that area said there was no evidence to link the murders to HAMAS. But let us look at another incident to put this in context. Back in 2001, the leader of the Jewish Defense League (deemed a terrorist group by the FBI), Irv Rubin, was caught plotting to blow up a mosque in Culver City and assassinate Congressman Daryl Issa. The US did NOT proceed to bomb all of Israel, they simply arrested Irv Rubin and threw him into prison where he was "suicided" before he could testify at his trial as to the sources of his funding and weapons.

28 injured as clashes rage across Jerusalem overnight

At least 28 Palestinians were injured as clashes with Israeli forces continued into the late hours of the night on Friday across Jerusalem, as anger over a series of killings by Israeli police boiled over into the streets of the city's Palestinian neighborhoods.

Clashes broke out in the occupied East Jerusalem neighborhoods of Silwan, al-Issawiya, al-Tur, and Wadi al-Joz, as hundreds marched and fought pitched battles with security forces in anger over the killing of Mutaz Hijazi, 32, early Thursday, as well as the killing of Abd al-Rahman al-Shaludi, 21, the week before.

Both men were suspected by authorities of involvement in violent incidents targeting Israelis. But Palestinians have been outraged by their killings, highlighting that instead of being arrested both were shot dead by police on sight.

Israeli left-wingers urge Spanish parliament to recognize Palestinian state

Hundreds of prominent left-wing figures from politics, academia, the arts, the media, and the military signed a letter on Friday urging the Spanish parliament to vote in favor of recognizing a Palestinian state.

Just one day after the Swedish government followed through on its symbolic pledge to accord recognition to Palestine, Israeli leftists sought to bring their influence to bear on the parliament in Madrid, which is expected to hold another symbolic discussion regarding recognition of a Palestinian state.

9/11 Was NATO’s License to Expand Globally

The 9/11 attacks on the United States undoubtedly benefited a number of actors, including the American military-intelligence complex, Israel, and most definitely, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The Cold War-era, the area of responsibility for which had long been confined to Europe and North America, used the provisions of Article 5 of the NATO Charter – which states that an attack on one member is an attack on all – to extend NATO’s power deep into Eurasia, particularly in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Kyrgyzstan.

After engaging in out-of-area invasions and occupations of Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, Libya, and Syria and, again in Iraq, against the «Islamic State,» the «North Atlantic» military bloc has transformed itself from a Cold War defensive alliance into a global offensive axis of nations that acts with or without United Nations authorization.

WOULD YOU BELIEVE THERE IS NOT CAPITAL PUNISHMENT IN ISRAEL

Neither is there a fair Judicial System for Palestinians living here …. THEY not only get the death penalty, it is usually for alleged crimes they are not even charged with. Either the police or the army act as the Judge, Jury and executioner in most cases.

SodaStream closes illegal settlement factory in response growing boycott campaign

Palestinian boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) activists today welcomed the news that SodaStream has announced it is to close its factory in the illegal Israeli settlement of Mishor Adumim following a high profile boycott campaign against the company.

“SodaStream’s announcement today shows that the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement is increasingly capable of holding corporate criminals to account for their participation in Israeli apartheid and colonialism,” said Rafeef Ziadah, a spokesperson for the Palestinian Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions National Committee (BNC), the broad coalition of Palestinian civil society organisations that leads and supports the BDS movement.

“BDS campaign pressure has forced retailers across Europe and North America to drop SodaStream, and the company’s share price has tumbled in recent months as our movement has caused increasing reputational damage to the SodaStream brand,” she added.

Israel reopens Al-Aqsa mosque compound

Israel announced reopening doors to Al-Aqsa mosque's compound on Thursday, after it had closed it following the shooting of a Jewish hardliner late Wednesday.

Israeli police shot and killed Muataz Hijazi, the Palestinian man suspected of shooting and trying to kill the Jewish activist, but the incident intensified clashes between Palestinian protesters and Israeli riot police.

Israel had said earlier that the closure of the site was temporary and was aimed at calming tempers after the shooting.

COLLATERAL DAMAGE OF THE BDS MOVEMENT

Originally I was going to headline this post A SMALL STEP FOR MAN, A GIANT LEAP FOR MANKIND …. AN EVEN GREATER LEAP FOR THE BDS MOVEMENT.

BUT

I must say that when we call for a boycott of companies situated in the Occupied West Bank we are calling for a boycott of the occupation itself. It is not our intention to put these companies out of business, just to get them out of lands that do not belong to them or Israel.

SO

In reality, the workers of SodaStream are victims of Collateral Damage in our ongoing war against the occupation. The workers of the plant involved, both Israeli and Palestinian have our sincerest wishes that they will soon find suitable employment elsewhere … they were certainly not our target.

Sweden officially recognizes Palestinian state, Israel recalls ambassador

Sweden has recognized the occupied state of Palestine officially, according to its foreign ministry. The Scandinavian has become the first West-European EU state to recognize the territories. Israel has recalled its ambassador in Sweden in protest.

The news follows an earlier hint by Prime Minister Stefan Lovfen in his Social Democrat manifesto, during his inaugural address in October, that this would happen. The idea was quickly met with criticism from the United States and Israel.

"Our decision comes at a critical time because over the last year we have seen how the peace talks have stalled, how decisions over new settlements on occupied Palestinian land have complicated a two-state solution and how violence has returned to Gaza," Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom told reporters.

"By making our decision we want to bring a new dynamic to the stalled peace process."

Will US demand truth about Israeli killing of Palestinian-American child?

Thousands attended the 26 October funeral of Orwa Hammad, the 14-year-old Palestinian-American boy who was shot dead by Israeli occupation forces in the West Bank village of Silwad two days earlier.

Israeli occupation forces claimed Orwa had been about to throw a molotov cocktail, a justification frequently given for the killings of children.

Local residents told The New York Times that “Palestinians throwing stones clashed with Israeli soldiers in the village after Friday Prayer, but that Orwa was apparently killed hours later.”

Remembering The 54th Anniversary Of The Israeli Massacre In Kafr Qasim

On the evening of October 29, 1956 Israeli troops shot and killed 49 unarmed Palestinian civilians in the village of Kafr Qasem, 20 km east of Tel Aviv near the green line.

Now the village has a population of 18,100 Palestinians, some of whom marched today alongside neighboring Arab villages to commemorate those killed 1956. People marched from the village center to the memorial site and placed candles for those killed; village leaders made speeches in commemoration.

According to the Israeli watchdog group Who Profits, “In October 2010, in an official letter to Who Profits, Africa-Israel stated: ‘Neither the company nor any of its subsidiaries and/or other companies controlled by the company are presently involved in or has any plans for future involvement in development, construction or building of real estate in settlements in the West Bank.’ However, the company soon after received a 78 million shekel contract to construct the C-Jerusalem project in the settlement neighborhood of Gilo in East Jerusalem.”

SodaStream Closing West Bank Factory Targeted by Boycotts in ScarJo Split

SodaStream International Ltd. will close a factory in a West Bank settlement that had prompted calls by pro-Palestinian activists for consumers to boycott the Israeli company’s soda machines.

The plant in the industrial zone of Mishor Adumim will shut after the company opted to relocate its operations at that site and another in northern Israel by late 2015. The decision is “purely commercial” and forms part of a “global growth plan” being initiated by Lod, Israel-based SodaStream, spokeswoman Nirit Hurwitz said today by e-mail.

Webmaster's Commentary:

"Yeah, yeah. Sure, sure. Purely commercial. That's right. It's just a commercial decision. Right."

GITMO # 2 ~~ TURNING GAZA INTO A SUPER-MAX PRISON

U.N. council to meet on latest Israel-Palestine tensions

The U.N. Security Council will hold an emergency meeting this week on recent tensions between Israel and the Palestinians in East Jerusalem due to Israel's plans to build more settlements, council diplomats said on Tuesday.

The meeting, scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, is being convened in response to a request made by Jordan to Argentina's U.N. Ambassador Maria Cristina Perceval, president of the 15-nation Security Council this month.

Palestine must recognize Jewish Israel for peace: Netanyahu

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says no peace agreement will be achieved with the Palestinians unless they recognize Israel as a Jewish state.

"A peace treaty will be possible with the following formula: A demilitarized Palestinian state that will recognize Israel,” Netanyahu said in a speech at the opening of the winter session of the Knesset on Monday.

He also claimed that Israel has the right to declare Jerusalem al-Quds as its capital.

Webmaster's Commentary:

These are all non-starters for Palestine, especially since Israel has no official borders and Palestine cannot know what they are agreeing to. However, Palestine (and many other nations in the Middle East have made it clear they are ready to recognize the state of Israel ... one second after it recognizes the state of Palestine.

A NEW ISRAELI PIN-UP CALENDAR TO DIE FOR ~~ LITERALLY

Just a couple of months after the Gaza war, Israel has found a new way “to show the world the beauty of Israel and its people” — via the power of a pin-up calendar featuring real IDF soldiers.

Or, as the creators of the MTKL Israeli Army Women Calendar like to call them, “the chosen amongst the chosen people.”

These chosen women, brought together by two former (male) soldiers who “scoured the ranks of the powerful Israeli army,” would like you to donate $25 to their Indiegogo campaign so that they can not only ship you this calendar, but also create a whole line of clothing and accessories that will blend “the best of military and street into must-have urban fashion.”

Facts All US Citizens Need to Know About Israel and Palestine

Gaza (along with the West Bank and East Jerusalem) is occupied Palestinian territory under international law, determined by the vast majority of the world, as well as the highest court in the world, the UN’s International Court of Justice. Gaza cannot commit aggression against Israel, since Israel is in constant and continual commission of illegal aggression against Palestine by occupying it (illegally and sadistically blockading it and frequently committing terrorism against its civilians, including by targeting them with chemical weapons provided by US taxpayers – see “Rain of Fire” by Human Rights Watch). As documented by Amnesty Int’l, Human Rights Watch, and many others, Israel intentionally targets and murders civilians, including children, en masse.

Livni's Facebook reply to Naftali Bennett shows true face of Israeli 'moderates'

Livni's response was instructive. Posting on her Facebook account, Livni accused Bennett of opposing a peace agreement even at the potential "cost" of "the international isolation of Israel, economic collapse and ostracizing." She continued:

You know what, Bennett? I too believe in the historical right of the People of Israel over all of The Land of Israel, but unlike you I also believe in the right of young people and the future generations to live in a Jewish and democratic state, [a] secure [state], with recognized borders and [a state] being a part of the free world, a state which [they] can take pride in, and in Zionism which had established it.

Livni then added: "My interest is not to establish a state for the Palestinians, but to give our young ones this state and this future in The Land of Israel."

Israel increases pressure on nonviolent struggle's flagship village

If you take a look at the Wikipedia page on Bil’in, you’ll see that the last updates about the village’s struggle against the separation wall refer to 2012. B’Tselem’s page on Bil’in was last updated almost two years ago. One could easily be led to believe that the struggle is over. But Bil’in continues to demonstrate.

Perhaps updating Wikipedia and B’Tselem’s website isn’t necessary. The situation in Bil’in remains as it was. Veteran protesters even experience flashbacks to 2008, when the demonstrations took place near the old route of the wall. This is the same route that stole nearly half of the village’s agricultural land, and which the High Court later ordered be dismantled and moved west. This was before the new route was built and introduced in 2011 — the same one that steals only one third of the village’s land.

Netanyahu: Israel will not give into pressure - no concessions without security guarantees

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday the opening of the winter session of Knesset that no external or internal pressure would force him into making concessions that would put Israel's security at risk.

The prime minster charged that only Israel was under duress to give in at the negotiation table, adding that the Palestinians were making demands for statehood without giving guarantees for peace.
