407 Jewish settlers forced way into Al-Aqsa for Hanukkah

At least 407 Jewish settlers forced their way into East Jerusalem's flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque complex during this week's Hanukkah holidays, a Palestinian NGO said Thursday.

The Al-Aqsa Foundation for Endowments and Heritage said that, from Sunday to Thursday, 407 Israelis – protected by Israeli police – had conducted individual and group tours inside the mosque complex.

Of these, 52 were young Israeli troops who entered the complex in military uniform as part of a so-called "guidance and exploration" program, the NGO said.

"Occupation forces harassed Muslim worshippers at the gates of the mosque complex, arresting 20 over the past week," it added.

It went on to say that detained worshippers had been subsequently released after being subject to monetary fines and barred from entering the Al-Aqsa complex for periods ranging from two weeks to one month.

Israeli officials could not be reached for comment on the issue.

Religious Circumcision Leaves Another Jewish Baby With Herpes, 17th Case Linked To Controversial Ritual Of Oral Suction

The controversial practice of a Jewish circumcision ritual has led another newborn baby to contract neonatal herpes in New York City - the fourth case this year and the 17th since 2000, city health officials said Wednesday.

Twelve days after undergoing the ancient ritual, known as metzitzah b'peh, which involves cleaning the circumcision wound by oral suction, the newborn baby was rushed to the hospital in November, the Jerusalem Post reported on Thursday.

Although the unidentified boy has recovered in the latest case, two of the other infected infants since 2000 have died, and at least two have suffered brain damage.

Netanyahu sends formal message to all Christians

Netanyahu has wished Christians in Israel and throughout the world a Merry Christmas.

In a videotaped message, he claimed that Christians are subject to persecution throughout the Middle East, except in Israel. (!!)

“Christian communities across the Middle East are experiencing a particularly difficult time, with violence, persecution and fear,” Netanyahu said.

“Here in Israel, religious freedom is a sacred principle. Israel’s Christian citizens enjoy the full blessing of freedom and democracy. Their equal rights are enshrined in Israeli law. Let us remember the common heritage and values that unite us in the face of extremism and hatred, which we will never accept,” he said.

The reality, of course, is that Christians are routinely exterminated in Palestine, since almost all Christians are Palestinian. (The rest are Armenians, or else they are foreign visitors who worship Jews.) Ten percent of all Arabs in Palestine are Christian. Jews call them “Notzri.”

Ongoing plight of Palestinian Christians

Back in 1948, when Israel was established, Christians in Palestine made up around 18 percent of the population. Now it is around two percent only.

They have been faced with the same discriminatory policies as Muslim Palestinians, pushing thousands to leave Palestine. In a 2006 poll, Christians living in Bethlehem said Israeli aggression and occupation was the main cause of emigration.

Inside Story discusses the sufferings of Palestinian Christians under the Israeli occupation.

Key to the Twelve Days of Christmas

According to the Handbook of Catholic Sacramentals by Ann Ball, the famous song about the 12 Days of Christmas was written in England as a catechism song for young Catholics in the days when it was illegal to practice or teach the Catholic Faith. It contains hidden meanings intended to help children remember lessons of faith. Instead of referring to an earthly suitor, the “true love” mentioned in the song really refers to God. The “me” who receives the presents is symbolic of every baptized person.

A Message From a Protestor and Former Cop: We Are Not Anti-Cop. We Are Pro-Life.

To the police, I say -- come meet some of the protestors. You'll meet people fighting for life and love, and hoping that with their activism, more of their brothers and sisters will be able to live full lives without the threat of violence. We are not anti-cop; we are pro-life.

To the protestors, I say -- come meet the good men and women I served with on the police force. Mourn with them now in this trying moment. Understand that many police officers fear for their lives, too. They want to serve their city and go home each night to their families. Because our movement is fundamentally about preserving and protecting life, we can easily understand how we care for the police safety without giving up our core message that the NYPD must be reformed.

Webmaster's Commentary:

These are kind, healing words from a former police officer who is a woman of faith, urging protestors and police to come together as human beings.

That may take a miracle, but is certainly not impossible.

Panorama also claimed Swiss prosecutors had seized Franciscan accounts in Switzerland because the account holders had allegedly invested in illegal operations that could include arms and drug trafficking.

6 Things People Get Wrong About the Bible's Christmas Story

The worst role in any children's Christmas play is the innkeeper who gets to lecture the holy couple about how there's "no room for them in the inn." That's the role jerky little kids get to prepare them for a lifetime of managerial positions. Long story short, the holy family ends up in the stable. But wait -- the entire reason they made the trek from Nazareth to Bethlehem was because it was Joseph's hometown. You'd think there'd be at least one family member with a futon they could crash on or something, right? So why did they even need an inn to begin with? The simple answer is that, in the Bible, there is no innkeeper -- and probably no inn. That's because inns were only found on major roads, and Bethlehem was the equivalent of a truck stop outside of a rural town in Wyoming.

Webmaster's Commentary:

And number 7: The Christmas story has the shepherds out tending their flocks at night (in order to see the star and hear the angels). But the only time Shepherds need to tend their flocks by night is when the lambs are being born, both to deal with difficult deliveries and protect the new lambs from predators. Lambs are not born in the middle of winter but in the Spring, late February to mid-April.

Suffice it to say that I was commissioned to help tutor this very young man for a brief period of time, and that it was very clear to me that he was distressed about something really huge! Since his lessons were not progressing very well at all, we – or I, “side-lined” his lessons and decided to “talk” about what was really bothering him – and what actually came out, was NOT what I was expecting at all.

For the purposes of this article we’ll call him “Anthony” (although that was not his real name).

Anthony was a very good looking boy, and had an awful lot of talent as far as I was concerned in both art and music. He was also a very talented “sketcher” – and by using only pencils – could produce images on paper that were very worthy of artistic notice.

Netanyahu’s ‘Jewish state’ bill would be a crippling blow to Israel

Israelis will soon face a primordial decision respecting the future of their country: whether to define Israel as a supra-national state which accords primary rights, both in law and in fact, based solely on Jewish identity. The thrust of the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s “nation-state bill” effectively discards the long-held (if imperfectly observed) legal assertion that all Israelis, including that country’s Arab citizens, enjoy equality under the law. Zionism And ISIS: Opposing Forces Or Two Sides Of The Same Coin?

Over the past decade, the Middle East — the cradle of civilization and the birthplace of the three major monotheistic religions — has become a flashpoint for religious extremism and fascism. The general public has grown used to associating radicalism with Islam, even to such an extent that the general notion is that the Islamic faith is the expression of religious extremism par excellence.

Yet such assessments have generally failed to take into account an equally dangerous radical trend that has been unfolding in the region for decades — Zionism.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I remember, as a kid, watching Khrushchev at the UN, banging his shoe on the table, and the translation of what he was saying was given as, "We will bury you!", which was construed by the "translator" as a threat against the US.

Of course, that was a complete mistranslation, and misrepresentation of what the man actually said. The real translation was "You will bury yourselves."

I think of those Jews, many of whom had escaped death during the Holocaust, who founded Israel.

And I have to wonder: is what Israel has become what they really wanted to see evolve?!?

A viciously apartheid, xenophobic culture, hating Muslim Arabs so intensely that many in government and Jewish faith communities have, sometimes very publicly, advocated their own, "Final Solution" to "The Arab Problem"?!?

There is a term in psychology called "enabling". It is when someone encourages someone else to do something that is bad and risky for that person, but -for their own reasons - continues to encourage this bad behaviour.

When one nation enables another nation's bad behaviour on the world stage, as the US does with Israel, the ultimate outcome cannot be good. And the US has done absolutely nothing to ameliorate the Israeli government's continuous onslaught against the Palestinians. Please note the following, from the, published on 24 July, 2014:

It was supposed to be a place of refuge from a devastating war. Hundreds of people were crammed into a United Nations-run elementary school in the northern Gaza Strip on Thursday when the converted shelter was hit by a series of explosions. At least 15 people were killed and more than 120 injured, according to local health officials. Survivors said they had packed their belongings and were gathered in the schoolyard awaiting evacuation when the shells hit. But the circumstances remained murky late in the day. The U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees said it had asked the Israeli liaison office repeatedly for a window of time in which to evacuate the staff and displaced people who wanted to leave the school. “We got no answer,” said Adnan abu Hasna, a spokesman for the U.N. Relief and Works Agency, or UNRWA. Survivors said they were waiting to leave when the shells hit.

These actions, coupled with brisk annexations of territories in which Palestinians have lived for generations; the routine torture of prisoners, including children;the daily killing of Palestinians in peaceful protest all lead to one inevitable conclusion: that Israel, as a country, is hell-bent on a complete genocide of all Palestinians, and a complete reconquering of the land, to, at last, create "Eretz Israel", or "Greater Israel."

I would strongly caution both the Israeli government, and certain religious leaders to be very, very careful about what they wish for here.

A physical victory in this regard may well lead to a moral, and spiritual curse upon this nation so intense that it can never, ever be unbroken.

Israel's Chief Military Rabbi questions Islamic religious significance of Al-Aqsa compound

Israel's Chief Military Rabbi Brig. Gen. Rafi Peretz has claimed that the religious significance of Jerusalem's al-Haram al-Sharif in Islam is an invention, stating that the vast majority of Muslims know nothing about the Quran.

During a lecture at the Otzem Pre-Military Torah Academy in Moshav Naveh, he claimed that Muslims have no real reason to pray at Temple Mount, known as al-Haram al-Sharif (The Noble Sanctuary) in Arabic.

"The only mosque any holiness is attributed to is Al-Aqsa. The rest of the Temple Mount has no religious significance," Peretz claimed.

"What is the Al-Aqsa Mosque?" Peretz asked. "It says in the Quran 'make me a mosque on the edge.' Al-Aqsa is on the edge. The edge of what? Mecca? The edge of the Arabian Peninsula. When they bow, they bow to Mecca but their backside is turned to the Temple Mount, because the edge for them is the edge of the Arabian Peninsula. So what are they doing on the Temple Mount?"

Why the Internet is slowly strangling religion

Increased access to information is making it more difficult for faiths to exert total control over their followers

Webmaster's Commentary:

Mea Maxima Culpa!

Again, we are seeing a repeat of the history from when Gutenberg rediscovered movable type printing (the Chinese were using it hundreds of years earlier). Prior to Gutenberg, churches were free to re-write the gospels to suit their own agendas, and the laity were forbidden to even touch the book, let alone read it (as most of them could not read). Gutenberg's technological advance meant books were affordable, and Gutenberg published his first bible in 1454. As literacy increased, people began to notice that Gutenberg's version very often did not match what their local church was saying, with the obvious contradictions harming the credibility of the church as a whole. This forced King James to order a "standard" bible to be adopted by all churches in 1611.

I have no problem with people believing what they want, so long as their beliefs are NOT used as an excuse to inflict harm upon others, extract wealth from them, enslave them, or to justify wars. My problem is with organizations created solely to exploit myths and beliefs for wealth and commercial power. History proves that religion is a tool of human enslavement. Even the Bible approves of slavery.

LEVITICUS 25:44-46

" As for your male and female slaves whom you may have; you may buy male and female slaves from among the nations that are round you. You may also buy from among the strangers who sojourn with you and their families that are with you, who have been born in your land; and they may be your property. You may bequeath them to your sons and after you, to inherit as a possession forever; you may make slaves of them, but over your brethren the people of Israel you shall not rule, one over the other, with harshness."

No religion has ever set its followers free from the oppressions of the organized hierarchy of that religion (with the possible exception of the historical Jesus himself). Religion teaches unquestioning obedience. Religion is slavery. I oppose such slavery as earnestly and staunchly as my ancestors opposed the slave ships and the slave policies of the Confederacy.

I am not anti god (for one can hardly oppose something which does not exist). I simply wish to set people free from all forms of oppression and exploitation.

Anyone who wants to track the progress Israel has made on the steep slope toward fanaticism, religiosity and backwardness must examine its relationship to the Temple Mount. Anyone who insists on labeling Israel a modern Western country can’t ignore the extraordinary change that has taken place in recent years. And anyone who still thinks this is a nonreligious society must heed the dark and insane forces that motivate it.

In no country in the West — which Israel pretends to belong to, more and more in vain — does an archeological site turn into an “existential foundation” and excuse for bloodshed. In no country in the West is holiness a matter of policy.

Priest bolting from parish raises questions

A New Mexico priest has bolted from his parish. Now people have questions: Where did he go, and did he take some of the church’s money with him?

Parishoners said he upgraded the parsonage, school and convent, which were all in desperate need of repair.

Sources tell KRQE News 13 the way he spent money divided the congregation and some left altogether.

A few weeks ago, to the shock of the congregation and the Diocese, Kiran left and went back to India. A spokesperson for the Diocese says he did not give them notification.

Anti-gay Christian group threatens to sue hotel for hosting scholars who endorse Israel boycott

The American Center for Law and Justice, a Christian, right-wing legal organization, has written to a Los Angeles hotel warning it against hosting the American Studies Association’s annual meeting next month.

The letter, addressed to the general manager of the Westin Bonaventure Hotel & Suites, argues that by passing a resolution in support of the boycott of Israeli academic institutions, the American Studies Association (ASA) will practice “unlawful discrimination” over who is permitted to attend the meeting, scheduled to take place 4-9 November.

Webmaster's Commentary:

There is no connection between supporting BDS and any kind of limits on who can attend the meeting. This will never get to court, but is a desperate attempt by Israel's butt-boys to try to generate negative PR against BDS.

Atheist Jailed 100 Days for Refusing Religious Drug Rehab Wins $2 Million Settlement

Hazle says he told officials his atheism prevented him from participating in the program and insisted on a non-religious option, which he didn't get. During the 12-step program, staff found Hazle "disruptive," though in a "congenial way," and reported him to his parole officer. Hazle was sent to jail for 100 days for violating his parole. He ended up suing in a federal lawsuit for wrongful incarceration in violation of his religious liberty. It would take seven years and two court rulings for his lawyers to announce Tuesday that Hazle won a $1.95 million settlement against the state of California and its contractor, WestCare California.

Database of Publicly Accused Roman Catholic Priests, Nuns, Brothers, Deacons, and Seminarians in the United States

This database provides convenient access, for law enforcement and other interested persons, to the names of all U.S. Catholic clergy accused of sexually abusing children and/or possessing child abuse images, commonly referred to as child pornography. Links are provided to the publicly filed court documents and mainstream media articles that are the sources for this database, and a factual summary of the allegations is provided for each accused person. This database continues and extends the work done by the Diocese of Tucson, which published the first diocesan list on June 21, 2002, and the approximately two dozen dioceses that have since published lists of their own. Their efforts were based on internal diocesan lists (see a sample from Boston) maintained during the 1990s. Our list also has other precursors, as described in our overview.

5 Shockingly Cynical Tricks Behind Ancient Religions

Religion is an area that often attracts people with bad intentions. There are preachers who run away with the church's bankroll, cult leaders who molest their followers, and literally all of Scientology. But all those little ploys that modern faith healers and shady preachers use to fleece the masses have been around for thousands of years, and if anything, they've only gotten less inspired over time.

City of Houston demands pastors turn over sermons

The city of Houston has issued subpoenas demanding a group of pastors turn over any sermons dealing with homosexuality, gender identity or Annise Parker, the city’s first openly lesbian mayor. And those ministers who fail to comply could be held in contempt of court.

“The city’s subpoena of sermons and other pastoral communications is both needless and unprecedented,” Alliance Defending Freedom attorney Christina Holcomb said in a statement. “The city council and its attorneys are engaging in an inquisition designed to stifle any critique of its actions.”

ADF, a nationally-known law firm specializing in religious liberty cases, is representing five Houston pastors. They filed a motion in Harris County court to stop the subpoenas arguing they are “overbroad, unduly burdensome, harassing, and vexatious.”

“Political and social commentary is not a crime,” Holcomb said. “It is protected by the First Amendment.”

Palestinian Christians denounce priest for claiming Israel grants them freedom

Yara Salameh was shocked when she watched Jibril Nadaf, a priest from Nazareth, repeat a call on fellow Palestinian Christians to serve in the Israeli military.

Nadaf claimed Israel was the only country in the Middle East where Christians are “not persecuted” during a speech to the United Nations Human Rights Council on 23 September.

“I couldn’t believe it,” said Salameh, a 25-year-old pharmacist from the village of Turan, home to both Christians and Muslims, located in the Galilee region of present-day Israel.

“He represents no one but himself. The army he wants us to join is the same one shedding the blood of our innocent brothers and sisters — Palestinian blood just like ours,” she told The Electronic Intifada.

Stephen Hawking, “I’m an Atheist” Creationist Pastor, “He’s a Fool.” Church and Science Debate Back in Public Discourse?

Below is an image of the still theoretical HIggs Boson, considered one of the two fundamental particles that make up all matter that came into existence at moment of the Big Bang.
The question is, as always, “what came before the Big Bang”?
Saint Thomas Aquinas, who died in 1276, asked the question, “what caused the First Cause that caused the existence of the Universe?”

Webmaster's Commentary:

"You believe that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a woman made from a rib was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree.

"And you don't understand why I have doubts?"

The good professor has walked into a trap called "The Big Bang", which is not science but religion made to look like science. There are ample reason to suspect it is a lot of nonsense, not the least of which is that a Monk came up with the idea. But science often clings to revealed dogma as willingly as the buy-bull bangers, as Galileo's opposition proved.

Files on Winona Diocese clergy who abused children are made public

Long-sealed records of 14 Catholic priests who worked in four high schools and 45 parishes across southern Minnesota were opened to public scrutiny Tuesday, revealing hundreds of documents indicating that the Diocese of Winona did not report claims of child sex abuse to law enforcement, did not remove offenders from ministry, and continued to financially support the priests even as the patterns of abuse became clear.

The documents also show that the Winona Diocese “anticipates eventual bankruptcy” as a result of that lawsuit and others being filed under the new Minnesota Child Victims Act.

The 14 priests worked in all four high schools in the diocese.

Preparations are underway to usher in a week long holiday in Israel. It is called Succot, or The Feast of the Tabernacles. We eat all of our meals in little booths and the ceilings are usually made of tree branches, allowing the sky to be visible. It is a reminder of the 40 years we roamed in the desert and dwelled in such structures. It is actually quite a fun holiday and a very community oriented one, it is one of my favourites.
A non Jewish visitor to Jerusalem this week might get the impression that the entire city stands in solidarity with the homeless Palestinians illegally evicted from their homes by settlers. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Tents have appeared (actually booths) in preparation of the Festival

Read the genocidal sermon a notable Atlanta rabbi gave this Rosh Hashanah

Last Thursday Rabbi Shalom Lewis of Congregation Etz Chaim in the Atlanta suburb of Marietta, Georgia gave what can only be understood as a call to genocide in his Rosh Hashanah sermon to welcome in the Jewish new year. The sermon, republished in full below, calls for a war on Islam and Muslims worldwide. Lewis says a “holy crusade” against Islam is needed to”exterminate it utterly and absolutely.”

Missouri man alleging sexual abuse by Catholic priest seeks $13 million from diocese

It has been 30 years, but Kansas City’s Catholic diocese still should pay a heavy price for allowing a now-dead priest to repeatedly sexually abuse a former altar boy, a lawyer for the alleged victim said in court Monday,

kicking off a US$10 million (S$13 million) lawsuit against the diocese. Jon David Couzens, then age 10, said he was molested 20 times over two years in the early 1980s by Monsignor Thomas O’Brien, who died in 2013. Couzens was deeply involved in Catholic school and church activities.

The alleged abuse included an encounter in which O’Brien forced Couzens and other altar boys to perform sex acts on each other and on the priest, according to Couzens’ attorney,

Stephen Hawking Says 'There Is No God,' Confirms He's An Atheist

Stephen Hawking says he's an atheist, arguing that science offers a "more convincing explanation" for the origins of the universe and that the miracles of religion "aren't compatible" with scientific fact.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I agree with Professor Hawking on this one. And for reasons I have previously made clear, of which one is the following.

If one posits the existence of a god or gods able to communicate their presence to human minds, then as an inevitable result of the existence of that god or gods, it would be expected that all humans, or at least the priests who claim communications with the god(s), would have a unanimity of opinion as to how many gods there are.

Likewise, if one posits the existence of a god or gods able to communicate their existence to human minds, then as an inevitable result of the existence of that god or gods, able to communicate to human minds, all theologies would be in accord, and there would be no need for missionaries, let alone inquisitions and holy crusades. The religion of Abraham would have stayed unified, rather than split up into Christianity, Judaism, Sunni, and Shi'ite over what amounts to a bunch of soap opera arguments.

But there is a diversity of opinions as to how many gods there are. And there are missionaries, crusades, the inquisition, and the burning of a million heretics.

The world is not as it would be if there was a god or gods which could communicate their existence to the minds of humankind. None of the conditions which must inevitably follow the existence of a god or gods able to communicate their existence to the minds of humankind can be found anywhere on Earth.

Quod Erat Demonstrandum, no such gods exist.

But I still think the good professor needs to take the next step and realize that the Big Bang theory is itself a religious dogma wrapped in scientific trappings.

Israel bars entry to Al-Aqsa mosque to Palestinians for third consecutive day

Israel on Friday imposed restrictions on the entry of Palestinian worshipers into the Al-Aqsa Mosque in annexed East Jerusalem for the third consecutive day.

Israeli police stepped up security around the mosque, deploying 2,000 troops in Jerusalem and erected roadblocks at entrances to Jerusalem’s Old City.

“Police prevent men under 50 and West Bankers from entering Al-Aqsa compound or Friday prayers,” Sheikh Azzam al-Khatib, director-general of the Organization for Muslim Endowments and Al-Aqsa Affairs, told the Turkish Anadolu Agency.

Jews celebrated the start of Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year) on Wednesday evening, the first day of new Jewish year of 5775.

I do get the point of the sacrifice implied. I'm also pretty sure that it's also one of those roses by any other name, though traditionalists from the 'my way or the highway' demographic may beg to differ, though I don't think the word 'beg' will actually be included in the response. Mithra! It's getting deep in here (good thing I edit before posting, I'd left the last 'e' off of 'here'), speaking of other things which also smell by any other name, which I wasn't but... what difference does that make?

A Menace To The Catholic Plutocracy

Those of you who have read these virtual pages over the years know that I don't believe the Catholic Church was ever a spiritual one but a political one. It was founded to be the state religion of the Roman empire and was the corrupt king maker in much of Europe until the reformation. With 24/7 instant news it became difficult to hide that corruption when the victims of pedophile priests started coming forward. Now the conservative plutocrats that make up the Catholic hierarchy are fighting back proving once again there is very little spirituality involved but a lot of politics and lust for power.
