Russia Warns US That Syria Offensives Are Planned Near US Positions. US 'postured to respond' militarily to any 'challenge'

While most of the Syrian War is centered at this point around the Idlib Province, the last major rebel bastion, there is also interest in mopping up some of the smaller rebel positions along the Jordan border, especially where ISIS and al-Qaeda are concerned.

This is a raising a dangerous risk of a confrontation between the US and Russia, because Russia and Syria are very keen to chase some of the Islamists off the border in the near future, and Russia has informed them some of these Islamists are relatively close to US military positions in the area.

The US has long been fine with Islamists on the Jordan border, and is warning Russia against taking any action against them, saying the US would view it as a “challenge” and that they would not hesitate to respond militarily if there is any move into the area.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I would love to see both some sanity and some clarity in the US government's position on Syria; unfortunately, what I see unfolding here, is the prelude to an all-out war between Russia, Syria, and Iranians in Syria against the US, and potentially inviting the curse of another world war.

Just because something would be the most pig-headedly, ham-fistedly stupid thing for the US Government to do, is absolutely and utterly no guarantee that it will not do it.

Driving the extremists out of Syria’s Idlib province should be the primary goal at this stage of the Syrian peace process, Russian President Vladimir Putin said following a meeting with his Turkish and Iranian counterparts.
The Russian leader once again said that Moscow has “irrefutable” evidence that terrorist groups entrenched in the militant-controlled province are seeking to stage false flag attacks using chemical weapons.

“Our common absolute priority lies in the total elimination of terrorists in Syria,” Putin said, adding that Russian forces had recently helped to liberate the southwestern part of the war-torn country and confirming that Idlib province has become the primary target now. “The presence [of militants] poses a direct threat to the … civilians in the whole region,” the president warned.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The big problem here, is that the US government won't let this happen as naturally and gracefully as it should, as President Trump has made the statement that the US military is going to be in Syria...indefinitely:

US Commits to Indefinite military presence in Syria

IF, in fact, these reports are true, one has to wonder just how soon the US, Russia, Syria, and Iran, will be drawn into a nasty military confrontation here in Syria; I don't know what kinds of odds Vegas bookies are putting on this happening, but my sense is soon, and most probably right before the midterms, in order to "energize President Trump's base about going to the polls and voting the Republicans back into control of the government.

Israel Evacuated Islamist Commanders From Syria Alongside White Helmets

A new report gets dirty on the details of Israeli funding and weapons shipments to 12 anti-government extremist groups in Syria. Buried in the end of the piece is the revelation that Israel helped evacuate so-called “rebel commanders” as they also flew out members of the self-proclaimed “impartial” White Helmets organization.

On August 22, Israel evacuated some 800 members of the White Helmets, a group funded by the United States, United Kingdom, Germany and other Western countries, that claims to be an impartial civil defense organization but has been accused by Syria and Russia of terrorism. Its members have been caught on video grinning wildly as a child nearby was being beheaded in addition to other atrocities, while a high-budget film about the group won the 2017 Academy Award for best documentary.

Idlib final push: Damascus has the high ground, terrorists to surrender or be destroyed – analyst

Syria’s terror-infested Idlib province is a thorn that needs removing, a military expert told RT, adding that the Syrian Army is capable of both freeing the area from terrorists and keeping civilians safe.

The Idlib de-escalation zone has “served its purpose and has to be cleared out as soon as possible”, as it’s become a “source of destabilization and threats” that impedes further peace process in Syria, Mikhail Khodarenok, a retired colonel, who worked at the main operational directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, told RT.

PROTECTING SYRIA? Russian Bombers Prowling The Mediterranean

A statement from the Russian Defense Ministry released on Wednesday revealed that two strategic Tu-160 bombers conducted military exercises in the Mediterranean Sea.

“Two strategic Tu-160 bombers that left the Engels airfield successfully completed their tasks in the large-scale exercise plan of the Russian Naval and Aerospace Forces in the Mediterranean,” the statement said.

“The plane made a 10-hour flight on low-level terrain under difficult weather conditions and successfully simulated the launch of cruise missiles on ground targets in a specific area,” the document said.

Su-30 and Su-33 jets that left the Khmeimim air base in Syria followed the Tu-160 bombers.

Israel Armed, Funded 12 Different Syrian Rebel Groups

New reports on Israel’s arming and funding of Syrian rebel groups reveals that no less than 12 rebel factions, all in southern Syria, were on the receiving end of Israeli aid. This included weapons, ammunition, money, and even some armored vehicles.

The story about arming Syrian rebels actually broke Wednesday with the Jerusalem Post, though Israeli military censors shut this down quickly. Once the foreign-based Foreign Policy came out with its own version Thursday, Israeli media were quick to follow, suggesting the censors gave up on trying to keep this secret.

Foreign Policy interviewed rebels from the Syrian groups, and suggested that they “feel betrayed” because they had assumed Israel would intervene militarily to save them from the Syrian offensive, and that never happened.

With the Syrian Army poised to flush out militants active in the Golan Heights area, Damascus is close to wrapping up its campaign to free southern Syria.

The US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman believes that Washington could recognize the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights as part of the Jewish state, the Israeli newspaper Hayom reported.

In an interview with the Hebrew language daily, Friedman said that he expects the Golan Heights could remain under Israeli control “forever.”

“I cannot honestly imagine a situation in which the Golan Heights is not part of Israel forever,” Friedman said.

Trump Does 180 Shift On Syria: Regime Change Back On The Table

Will the war in Syria never end? Will the international proxy war and stand-off between Russia, the United States, Iran, and Israel simply continue to drift on, fueling Syria's fires for yet more years to come? It appears so according to an exclusive Washington Post report which says that President Trump has expressed a desire for complete 180 policy shift on Syria.

Only months ago the president expressed a desire "to get out" and pull the over 2,000 publicly acknowledged American military personnel from the country; but now, the new report finds, Trump has approved "an indefinite military and diplomatic effort in Syria".

IDF Flexes Muscles to Remove Jerusalem Post Story on Supplying Syria's 'Rebels'

The removal of a Jerusalem Post article that clearly noted the Israeli military had supplied Islamist rebels in Syria with weapons and funds is just "the tip of the iceberg," journalist and filmmaker Dan Cohen told Sputnik.

Although it hasn't exactly been a secret that Israel dabbled in arming and offering its general support to groups wanting to overthrow Syrian President Bashar Assad, Israeli military officials actually confirmed on Tuesday that Operation Good Neighbor was something of a front to arm opposition groups, according to a Jerusalem Post article that ultimately had its online lifespan cut extremely short.

Archived snapshots of the report note that the Israeli military provided military equipment and munitions to rebel groups, in addition to tons upon tons of food, clothing, fuel, electric generators, medical equipment and medicine through Operation Good Neighbor, which saw its beginnings in 2016 as a humanitarian aid mission.

Russia Challenges The US To Highlight Where There Are Chemical Weapons In Syria – US Remains SILENT

The United States should release the list of facilities in Syria where chemical weapons are allegedly being stored and allow the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to inspect these sites, Russian ambassador to the UN Vassily Nebenzia told the UN Security Council on Thursday.

“We have a specific proposal for our American colleagues. Could you announce the list of targets, as it is being said, that the Pentagon pointed out to be attacked by the Troika?” Nebenzia said. “If in your opinion they are related to the stockpiling and use of chemical weapons, then show respect for the UN Charter and request an OPCW inspection.”

ISIS commander alleges that he was trained by US in southern Syria

A recently captured Islamic State commander confessed to the Syrian Army this week that he was trained by the US forces in southern Syria.

According to this Islamic State commander’s confession, he was previously leading his forces in the southern districts of Damascus before their defeat earlier this year.

Following their defeat to the Syrian Army, the Islamic State commander and his forces were transported to the Badiya Al-Sham region of southern Syria, where they remained until his capture earlier this month.

The Islamic State commander said that he was trained by the US forces at the Rukban Refugee Camp in southern Syria and that he joined the terrorist group for monetary purposes.

The Israeli military is censoring news reports on Israel providing weapons and supplies to militant groups in Syria. The Jerusalem Post was told by the military censor to remove its story “IDF Confirms: Israel Provided Light-Weapons To Syrian Rebels”. However, the report providing details on the transfer of significant amounts of cash, weapons and ammunition to militants in southern Syria is still available via Google cache.

The support received by militants were provided by Tel Aviv in the framework of its Operation Good Neighbor, which Israel portrayed as a humanitarian mission focused on providing Syrians with “food, clothes and fuel.”

This incident once again demonstrates that all claims of Tel Aviv that it is not involved in the ongoing conflict in Syria are false.

France’s Chief of the Defense Staff Francois Lecointre stated on September 6 that French forces are ready to strike Syria once again if chemical weapons are used during the upcoming battle of Idlib.

A Murder Is Announced? US narrative on Idlib resembles Agatha Christie novel, Russia’s UN envoy says

US and its allies’ speculation that the Syrian government is going to use chemical weapons in Idlib resembles Agatha Christie’s novel, where the crime scene is publicly announced in advance, Moscow's UN envoy believes.

“The alleged intention of the Syrian government to use poisonous substances in Idlib is presented as a fait accompli,” Russian representative at the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, said during a UN Security Council meeting on Thursday. The diplomat was referring to repeated US and its allies’ warnings about what they believe are Damascus’ preparations to unleash a chemical attack. However, the exact proof to back up the claims has been kept in the dark.

“Agatha Christie's ‘A Murder is Announced’ novel comes to mind, when the impendending crime was reported in a newspaper, including is time and place,” Nebenzia went on.

Despite having a “fairly good penetration” of the Syrian opposition groups, the US has not seen any evidence suggesting that the militants in Idlib are capable of staging a chemical attack, the US defense secretary claimed.

Trump warns Syria not to 'recklessly attack' Idlib province

U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday warned Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his allies Iran and Russia not to “recklessly attack” Syria’s rebel-held Idlib province, warning that hundreds of thousands of people could be killed.

“The Russians and Iranians would be making a grave humanitarian mistake to take part in this potential human tragedy. Hundreds of thousands of people could be killed. Don’t let that happen!” Trump wrote in a tweet.

The Scenarios for the Battle of Idlib

I am hoping - and praying - that the US government and military don't do something so ham-fistedly, pig-headedly stupid, that it paves the way for yet more war in a region so desperately in need of peace.

Sep 06 09:16

As the Syrian government and its allies prepare to begin a military offensive against the last rebel-held province in the country, top U.S. government officials and even U.S. President Donald Trump have recently urged Syria to refrain from “recklessly” attacking the Idlib province, warning that it could result in a high civilian death toll. These recent statements of U.S. government officials have sought to portray Idlib as chiefly populated by civilians and benign opposition “rebels.”

Yet, just last year, one of the U.S. government’s top counterterrorism officials involved in the country’s Syria and Iraq policy stated on video that, in contrast to current government statements, Idlib is dominated by none other than the Al Qaeda terrorist group and that the province should be a major focus of U.S. counterterrorism policy given the threat that Idlib represents to global efforts to fight terrorism.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Translation: the US government doesn't want the combined forces of Russia, Syria, and Iran, to gut Idlib of terrorists, because it is the US government which is funding, arming, and supporting those terrorists as a "base" from which the US can reach out, and destroy more of Syria, even when time and logic have proved this a thankless task in all the years in which Syria has been at war, a war essentially designed and operated by US-funded interests.

The way the term "chemical attack" is being bandied about by our UN Ambassador, Nikki Haley, is a clear telegraphing of what US interests, most probably the White Helmets, and their ilk are going to do so, by creating such a false image of a chemical attack, most probably against children, staged as the "justification" for US troops going into Syria to attack it.

Psychic Nikki Haley: If There Is A Future Chemical Weapons Attack, Assad Did It

UN Ambassador and Clairvoyant Prognosticator of the Transmundane Nikki Haley has foreseen that, if there are any future chemical weapons attacks in the Syrian province of Idlib, it will most definitely be the Syrian government that is responsible and not the multiple terrorist factions in the area.

“If they want to continue to go the route of taking over Syria, they can do that,” said Nikki Haley at a UN press conference today, without explaining how a nation’s only recognized government can ‘take over’ the country it governs. “But they cannot do it with chemical weapons. They can’t do it assaulting their people. And we’re not gonna fall for it. If there are chemical weapons that are used, we know exactly who’s gonna use them.”

Psychic Haley knows ‘exactly’ who’s responsible for the next chemical attack in Syria

Nikki Haley has stated that she knows “exactly” who is going to use chemical weapons in Syria’s Idlib. The prophecy comes amid warnings that the terrorists are preparing a false flag attack to trigger a US-coalition intervention.

Revealing her extraordinary psychic abilities in addition to notorious diplomatic skills, the US envoy to the United Nations said that the sovereign government of Syria could “continue to go the route of taking over Syria” if it wants, but “if there are chemical weapons that are used [in Idlib], we know exactly who is going to use them.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

Haley isn't psychic. She's just seen the pay stubs!

US ambassador expects Golan Heights to be ‘part of Israel forever’

The US ambassador to Israel said in remarks published on Thursday that he expects Israel to keep the Golan Heights in perpetuity, Reuters reports. Foreign governments, including the US, do not recognize Israel’s claim of sovereignty over the strategic plateau captured from Syria in the 1967 war. President Donald Trump’s national security adviser has said Washington’s policy is unchanged. However, US Ambassador David Friedman suggested Israel is there to stay and said it is possible the US would consider recognizing Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights in the future. “I personally cannot imagine a situation in which the Golan Heights will be returned to Syria. I frankly cannot imagine a situation in which the Golan Heights is not part of Israel forever,” he told the right-wing Israel Hayom newspaper. Friedman added that there is “no one more undeserving of this prize” – control of the Golan Heights – than Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Syrian Intelligence Forces Operating Behind Terrorists' Frontline in Idlib

The Syrian army has sent its intelligence forces to the depth of key regions in Idlib which are under occupation by the terrorist groups, days before it starts its long-awaited military operation to capture the last major territory held by militants.

The Arabic-language al-Moraseloun news website reported on Wednesday that a large number of Syrian intelligence forces have been stationed in several cities and towns held by Tahrir al-Sham Hay'at (the Levant Liberation Board or the Al-Nusra Front) and other terrorist groups in Idlib and other occupied areas in Aleppo.

US Blocking Syrian Refugees' Return to Army-Held Regions

The US-led coalition forces stationed in Syria's al-Tanf region are preventing the refugees at al-Rukban camp from returning to the army-held areas, dissident-affiliated news websites said Wednesday.

The Arabic-language Smart News website affiliated to the militants quoted Spokesman of Ahmad al-Abdou terrorist group Saeed Saif as saying on Wednesday that the US forces detained a delegation of al-Rukban elderly people who wanted to negotiate with the Syrian army, near the al-Tanf military base at the Syria-Jordan borders.

He added that the delegation planned to hold talks with Damascus officials to pave the ground for the return of al-Rukban settlers to the army-liberated regions, warning that the conditions of the refugees at the camp are critical.

Tehran summit expected to seal fate of Syria's Idlib

The presidents of Iran, Russia and Turkey meet Friday in Tehran for a summit expected to shape the future of Idlib province, home to Syria's last major rebel bastion.

The summit comes as Syrian forces look poised to launch a major assault that is raising fears of a humanitarian catastrophe on a scale not yet seen in the seven-year-old conflict.

Damascus and its main backer Moscow have vowed to root out the jihadist groups that dominate Idlib province but the outcome of Friday's meeting could determine the scope and the timing of an offensive.

Why Is a Russian Naval Fleet Gathering Near Syria?

The size of the naval force – more than a dozen vessels including destroyers, frigates and submarines, some armed with Kalibr cruise missiles – also demonstrates that this “deployment is mainly, but not only for military drills,” said Kerim Has, a Moscow-based analyst on Russian and Turkish affairs.

Has said Russia needs more time to establish supporting infrastructure to sustain “a permanent presence of such a huge flotilla there” since its efforts to expand its naval depot in Syria’s Tartus port “is still an ongoing process.”

Russia has moved 25 warships to the Syrian coast, apparently in support of the Syrian offensive against Idlib, the last rebel held province. The naval force includes submarines, destroyers, frigates, smaller warships an several support ships. This is the largest number of warships Russia has ever deployed to the Syrian coast and this is officially an effort to deter the U.S. Navy from attacking the Syrian forces (which the U.S. said it would do if the Syrians used chemical weapons in Idlib). Russia has also moved more warplanes to Syria and has some heavy bombers ready to fly from southern Russia to launch cruise missiles at targets in Idlib.

Syrian troops are readying an offensive against the last remaining opposition bastion, an assault that could draw in the U.S., displace hundreds of thousands of civilians and cement President Bashar al-Assad’s hold over the country if his forces prevail.

The attack on the northwest province of Idlib is expected soon, weeks after government troops -- whose march from possible defeat to near victory after seven years of war has been propelled by Russian and Iranian allies -- retook the southern provinces of Suwaida and Daraa, the cradle of the 2011 revolt against the Syrian president.

So, he says, at the moment the Syrian Army is actively conducting an offensive against the terrorists in the south of the country and preparing for a major battle in the province of Idlib. Eventually, this is not pleasing to the jihadist militants and their sponsors, so they intend to do everything possible to stop the onslaught of Assad’s troops, explains Maqsud.

U.S. Is Defending al-Qaeda in Idlib

Assad was supposed to be gone already. President Obama thought it would be just another “regime change” operation and perhaps Assad would end up like Saddam Hussein or Yanukovych. Or maybe even Gaddafi. But he was supposed to be gone. The US spent billions to get rid of him and even provided weapons and training to the kinds of radicals that attacked the United States on 9/11.

But with the help of his allies, Assad has nearly defeated this foreign-sponsored insurgency.

The US fought him every step of the way. Each time the Syrian military approached another occupied city or province, Washington and its obedient allies issued the usual warnings that Assad was not liberating territory but was actually seeking to kill more of his own people.

False-flag Failure… US Cuts to the Chase to Defend its Terrorists in Syria

So, alleged chemical weapons are no longer part of the US rationale. It's basically: don't make any military move. The American president added that "hundreds of thousands of lives" could be lost if Syria and its allies move to rid the province of an estimated 10,000 militants among a civilian population of three million.

Trump's apparent "humanitarian" concern seems alarmist, if not cynical. When did he articulate similar misgivings when US air forces were pounding Raqqa to bits last year, causing thousands of civilian deaths?

This week, Russian and Iranian officials are working with Syria to set up humanitarian corridors in Idlib to remove civilians from harm.

US, Turkey Agree Syrian 'Any' Offensive in Idlib 'Unacceptable' - US State Dept

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo spoke on Tuesday over the phone with his Turkish counterpart, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, about the situation in Idlib, Syria.

The statement on the call, attributable to State Department Spokeswoman Heather Nauert, takes a stronger position against than the one taken by US President Donald Trump the day prior.

"President Bashar al-Assad of Syria must not recklessly attack Idlib Province. The Russians and Iranians would be making a grave humanitarian mistake to take part in this potential human tragedy," Trump tweeted on Monday. "Hundreds of thousands of people could be killed. Don’t let that happen!"

Now, it appears that the State Department and the White House aren't exactly on the same page. While Trump cautioned against a "reckless attack," the State Department, in conjunction with the Turkish Foreign Ministry, is calling "any Assad military offensive" in Idlib "unacceptable."

The Turkish military has boosted its naval group in the Eastern Mediterranean as the battle of Idlib is looming in Syria, Turkey’s pro-government daily Yeni Safak reported on September 2. According to the daily, “Turkey, which previously had 10 warships in the region, dispatched several more naval vessels to the region, the exact number of which is unknown.”

The daily also recalled multiple remarks by the Turkish authorities claiming that the Idlib offensive by the Syrian Army will be disaster and lead to a humanitarian catastrophe.

The report comes amid the ongoing Russian naval drills in the same area, which started on September 1 and will continue until September 8.

It should be noted that on August 31 Turkey finally designated Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, a new brad of Jabhat al-Nusra – the Syrian branch of al-Qaeda, as a terrorist group. Hayat Tahrir al-Sham is the most powerful group in the militant stronghold of Idlib in northwestern Syria.

Since the Russian government has been warning of this possibility, the exact opposite must necessarily therefore be true.

Syria's war: Damascus airbase blasts 'caused by electrical fault'

A series of loud explosions from an airbase outside the Syrian capital, Damascus, was caused by an electrical fault, state media said, denying reports Israeli raids were behind the blasts.

The explosions, which occurred early on Sunday at the al-Mezzeh airbase on Damascus' western outskirts, were heard across the city and were initially thought to be the result of an Israeli attack.

However, the Syrian state news agency SANA cited an unnamed military source who said there was no "Israeli aggression".

"The explosions heard in Damascus were due to the explosion of an ammunition depot near the airport, which was caused by a short-circuit," SANA reported.

Syrian CHECKMATE: Americans Will HAVE TO LEAVE, Idlib Lockdown Means Russia Drives U.S To DEAD END

The US will exert every effort to provoke the situation in Idlib, since the destruction of the last bulwark of terrorists will deprive them of their reason for being in Syria. This was stated by political scientist Igor Shatrov. According to the expert, the situation around Syrian Idlib, the last major concentration zone of militants opposing Damascus, means that the United States and its allies are really preparing a large-scale provocation.

The reason for this, the political scientist notes, is the risk for the US to finally lose control over what is happening in the SAR. “We need to understand why the probability of an aggravation of the conflict in Syria is greater than ever, because while Trump was engaged in the struggle with Russia or his establishment on other fronts, the situation in Syria has begun to come to normal. By and large, except Idlib, there are no more terrorists anywhere.

FM: Syria Ready to ‘Go All the Way’ in Attack on Rebel-Held Idlib

Speaking in Moscw after a visit with his Russian counterpart, Syrian FM Walid al-Muallem declared the Syrian military to be ready to “go all the way” in an offensive against rebel held Idlib, saying that the goal is to wipe out terrorist groups that persist in the deescalation zone in the area.

Idlib and the surrounding area is the last major rebel-held territory in Syria, and Muallem indicated that the presence of a large al-Qaeda affiliate in the region is viewed as a particular problem. Clearly, the Syrian government wants to reclaim the entire region, but Muallem indicated that ensuring al-Qaeda can’t just operate out of the deescalation zone is of particular importance.

Tens of thousands of rebels from different factions are operating in Idlib and neighboring Aleppo. The forces are mostly centered on a pair of coalitions, one led by al-Qaeda and the other dominated by the Turkish government’s proxy forces.

Speaking to reporters during a visit to the border with Lebanon, Avigdor Lieberman said as Syria was preparing to retake Idlib -- the last major stronghold of terrorists in Syria -- political efforts by Iran, Turkey, Russia and the international community in general to "redesign" Syria were increasing.

“We see various gatherings here and there; in Ankara, in Tehran, in Geneva, in other places too. They are talking about redesigning Syria after the battle for Idlib,” Lieberman said.

On August 28, ISIS militants carried out several positions of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the al-Azraq oil field area in eastern Deir Ezzor. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the SDF repelled the attack with help from the US-led coalition airpower.

This was the second major ISIS attack on SDF positions in Deir Ezzor province in August. The previous one took place on August 20 and also targeted the SDF-controlled oil field – the al-Omar oil fields in southeastern Deir Ezzor.

These attacks show that despite claims by the SDF and the coalition that ISIS was fully defeated in most of northwestern Syria, cells of the terrorist group are still operating there.

Over the last few days, the Syrian military has deployed a large number of former Free Syrian Army (FSA) members, whom reconciled with the government in eastern Damascus, to a frontline with Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (formerly Jabhat al-Nusra) in northern Hama.
