Trump Puts his Logo on the Military-Industrial Complex, Sets Up US Arms Sales with Syria Demo

Trump’s bid to increase U.S. arms sales, by using the Syria strikes as a PR blitz to show the effectiveness of U.S.-made weapons, is just the latest action taken by the president to cement his role as America’s top arms dealer

WASHINGTON – The week after the U.S., along with the U.K. and France, launched unilateral strikes against the Syrian government, the Trump administration is rolling out a “Buy American” weapons-selling initiative aimed at allowing other nations to buy even more weapons from U.S.-based arms manufacturers. According to Reuters, the initiative, set to be announced today, will speed up the approval of arms deals to U.S. allies and will call for members of President Donald Trump’s cabinet, as well as the president himself, to act as “closers” in major arms deals and salesmen for U.S. weapons companies at international air shows and weapons showcases.

Israeli threats fail to end detainees’ boycott of military courts

Israeli occupation forces are threatening and beating Palestinian detainees in an attempt to pressure them to end their boycott of Israeli military courts.

Some have been forced to attend court sessions, prisoners rights group Addameer said in a statement marking Palestinian Prisoners Day on Tuesday.

It notes that Israel has arrested approximately 800,000 Palestinians and issued over 52,000 administrative detention orders since 1967.

The boycott, which started on 15 February, also includes lawyers and human rights organizations, as prisoners have urged them to take similar action as a way to delegitimize the Israeli military court system.

Prisoners said the boycott will last until Israel ends its practice of administrative detention – the widespread imprisonment of Palestinians without charge or trial that can be renewed indefinitely.

UN human rights experts condemn Gaza protest killings

Six United Nations human rights experts have condemned Israel’s use of lethal force against unarmed Palestinian protesters in Gaza.

”We express our outrage over these shootings that may have resulted in unlawful killings and the incomprehensibly high number of injuries sustained,” the experts stated on Tuesday.

Israeli forces have killed 36 Palestinians in Gaza since 30 March, when the Great March of Return rallies were launched. The six-week protest is set to culminate on 15 May, when Palestinians commemorate the ethnic cleansing of the lands on which the state of Israel was declared in 1948.

At least 28 of those killed, including three children and a journalist marked as a member of the press, were fatally wounded during protests, according to the UN experts.

As the dust settles in Syria after the recent strikes, the investigators of the Organization for the Prevention of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) are now set to begin their work. The Syrian government, which immediately granted OPCW investigators visas despite U.S. claims to the contrary, has stated that these investigators will be able to move freely, as the area, having been recently secured by the Syrian Arab Army, is now free of armed insurgents. However, concerns have been raised as the OPCW has been influenced by political forces in the past, particularly regarding events in Syria. One of the first sites investigators will visit will be Douma Hospital, where they will likely question the doctors and staff regarding what they saw on April 7, 2018.

The operation was carefully orchestrated and methodically planned to lessen chances of civilian casualties, the spokesperson said. Missiles hit three distinct military chemical weapons targets. “The three facilities are – or more appropriately, were – the fundamental components of the regime’s chemical weapons warfare infrastructure,” McKenzie said.

Dog Poet Transmitting.......

Please forgive the use of bad language to punctuate bad behavior. There is no culture on Earth more evil and Satanic than that of Israel founded on the Nazi formula of Theodor Herzl and financed by the Satanic first family of arch-devils, Rothschild clan. The evil of the AshkeNAZI empire had its origin in the translation of the Ashkenazim into Khazar's. In the 9th century, King Bulan of Khazaria got hoodwinked by a filth peddling Talmudist. The Ashka-nimrods object to this linkage which is all the proof needed that it is so. If they say something is so, it is not and if they say something is not so, it is. This is a good rule of thumb to measure them by and it is always a spiritual affirmation to stick that thumb up your ass for emphasis and their version of an holy oil immersion process.

Palestinian ex-prisoner: You sit there wishing you would die

Due to the presence of some 800 Israeli settlers, Hebron is exceptionally militarised, with the Israeli army imposing severe restrictions on everyday life and the movement of 40,000 Palestinians living there.

Many Palestinians have resorted to building metal enclosures around their homes to avoid being targeted by settlers who regularly hurl abusive comments, throw stones and attack them.

For Abu Sbeih, a particularly testing experience of the occupation came in December 2015 when she was arrested by the Israeli army for plotting, along with three of her nephews, to shoot and kill an Israeli settler in Hebron. According to Abu Sbeih, the settler, Anat Cohen, had for years harassed Palestinians in Hebron with regular and targeted abuse.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This has become the "new normal", in the treatment of Palestinians by the IDF; false charges; abuse; starvation; and indefinite detentions, which can be renewed at the whim of Israeli officials and no charges are ever filed.

This is why the BDS movement is critical right now; finance is a language the Israelis understand, since they cannot, collectively comprehend the obscene levels of inhumanity with which the Palestinian people are treated.

Some Israeli soldiers on Gaza border have reached out to ‘Breaking the Silence’

Some Israeli soldiers who are posted to the Gaza border have reached out to Breaking the Silence, the dissident Israeli group that prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has tried to ban because it publishes soldiers’ testimonies that are highly critical of the occupation.

Avner Gvaryahu, the head of Breaking the Silence, described the contacts during a panel at the J Street conference in Washington yesterday:

As long as there will be an occupation, soldiers will speak out. As long as we will continue to control Palestinians, there will be those people who say I have to take responsibility for what I did. And the numbers of soldiers who are coming are as high as they were ever, you know– even soldiers reaching out who are currently on the border with Gaza.

I later asked Gvaryahu if these soldiers are refusing to shoot, as B’Tselem, the human rights organization, has urged. “No, I said, some of them have reached out to us,” he responded.

Gassing is bad, but OK for some: US complicity in past chemical attacks

US hypocrisy over its self-righteous military attack on Syria over a recent alleged use of not-yet-verified chemical weapons in Douma raises the question: Is gassing bad, but OK for some countries?

US hypocrisy over its self-righteous military attack on Syria over a recent alleged use of not-yet-verified chemical weapons in Douma raises the question: Is gassing bad, but OK for some countries?
The reason for asking is the rush to judgment by the United States, Britain and France to bomb selected military locations in Syria, which these countries claim research and develop, manufacture and store chemical weapons.

Yet, the United States and some of its Western allies, including Great Britain, have a history of being complicit in a country's – namely Iraq's – use of chemical weapons if it suited their national interest.

So, where's the outrage?

Will Americans sacrifice one of their warships to start a major war? (By Jim Jones)

I am amazed by the pontificating of supposed Military Experts who go into considerable detail figuring out who would "win" in a limited war between the "West" and Russia/Syria. These guys simply astound me - I have 25 years military service and was a senior Field Rank Officer; I have some knowledge of what I am about to speak but I would never describe myself as some Expert on military matters. Anyone, remotely connected to the military will know and tell you that there are no certainties in war and the best laid plans of mice and men often go astray. [Thank you Robbie Burns]. In the military, we had a term - "the fog of war". Meaning that once you launch into battle, there is so much that can and does happen which is unscripted and unplanned that you must rely on the training of your troops and the overall battle plan in order to succeed because your plan just went out the window.

Defense Contractors Saw $10 Billion Stock Boost Following Syria Airstrikes

For Raytheon (RTN), the company which manufactures the Tomahawk cruise missiles used against Syria, nearly $2.5 billion has been added to the company’s market value. Add together the gains from other top weapons makers Lockheed Martin (LMT), General Dynamics (GD), Boeing (BA), and Northrop Grumman (NOC), and it becomes apparent just how profitable a business war can be.

Lockheed Martin makes the tactical control system, another of the required components of the Tomahawk launch apparatus. General Dynamics, meanwhile, manufactures the missile’s firing system. Boeing builds the B-1 bombers used in the strikes as well as its own variety of cruise missiles, while Northrop Grumman produces radar systems and other bombers, like the B-2 Stealth.

Once Upon A Time Long Ago Truth Was Important

I wonder how many people, not just Americans but those in other countries, have come to the conclusion that the United States today is a less free and less aware society than the societies in the dystopian novels of the 20th century or in movies such as The Matrix and V for Vendetta. Just as people in the dystopian novels had no idea of their real situation, few Americans do either.

What are we to make of the extraordinary war crimes committed by the United States in the 21st century that have destroyed in whole or part seven countries, resulting in millions of dead, maimed, orphaned, and displaced peoples? Consider, for example, the latest Washington war crime, the illegal attack on Syria. Instead of protesting this illegality, the American media egged it on, cheering impending death and destruction.

Roger Waters Takes on Syrian White Helmets, Thought-Control

“What we should do is go and persuade our governments not to go and drop bombs on people. And certainly not until we have done all the research that is necessary so that we would have a clear idea of what is really going on.”
***
Waters, who has long been outspoken in his support for Palestinian resistance, brought up the White Helmets after someone had asked him to speak about the alleged chemical weapons attack in Douma that led the U.S., U.K. and France to bomb Syria last Friday. That chemical weapons attack — which was most likely staged, based on newly released evidence — was publicized chiefly by the White Helmets, as well as by the USAID-funded Syrian American Medical Society.

Though the audience member had asked Waters to speak up about the chemical weapons attack and condemn the Syrian government for its alleged complicity, Waters stated that he had a very different perspective on the situation in Syria and on the White Helmets group:

"The White Helmets is a fake organization that exists only to create propaganda for jihadists and terrorists. That’s my belief"

Durden: Trump Was Presented With 3 Options on Syria, Picked the Least Expansive One

"Mr. Bolton knew the respect Mr. Trump had for Mr. Mattis, and he may have decided that it
was wise to defer initially to the Pentagon chief after he started the job"

***
White House meetings, the president and his advisers agreed on one of the most restrained of the military-strike options crafted by the Pentagon: a powerful missile attack aimed at three targets meant to hobble the Syrian regime’s ability to use chemical weapons and deter President Bashar al-Assad from using them again.
***
The second option proposed strikes on a broader set of Syrian regime targets, including suspected chemical-weapons research facilities and military command centers.
***
Trump pressed his team to also consider strikes on Russian and Iranian targets in Syria if necessary following reports that Assad had moved planes to Russian facilities to help protect them. But Mattis pushed back, those familiar with the decision-making said. United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley joined Trump in advocating for a forceful response, while Mattis warned about the risks that a more expansive strike could trigger a dangerous response from Moscow and Tehran.

As war starts in Syria, the company that tortured prisoners in Abu Ghraib may already be on the ground

A newly released report [pdf] reveals that there are US military contractors in Syria. The report emerged only a week after Donald Trump said America would withdraw from Syria. On 14 April, he bombed Syria with support from the UK and France. But one of the military contractors which may now be in Syria is owned by the same company which was responsible for the abuse and torture of prisoners at Abu Ghraib following the US-led invasion of Iraq.

Timing?

The Young Turks network stated that the report [pdf], “which compiles data for U.S. contractors operating under authority of the United States Central Command (CENTCOM)”, listed Syria for the first time since Trump came to office, but:

It’s not clear whether the new data categories reflect Pentagon anticipation of long-term commitment of private U.S. personnel in Syria.

Rights groups: Gaza protests aren't combat, IDF must stop shooting protesters

After three weeks in which Israeli army snipers have killed dozens and wounded well over 1,200 protesters inside the Gaza Strip, four prominent human rights organizations petitioned Israel’s High Court of Justice on Sunday, demanding that the court order the state to revoke the rules of engagement that permit shooting demonstrators who pose no danger to human life.

The overwhelming majority of those who were killed and wounded by Israeli forces over the past three weeks were unarmed participants in the “Great Return March,” a 45-day series of festivals and protests set to culminate on Nakba Day in mid-May.

The rights groups asked the court for an urgent hearing — before this Friday’s protests.

President Trump’s War Crime is Worse than the One He Accuses Assad of Commiting

The single most important thing that happened last night when the US military on President Trump’s orders launched a wave of over 100 cruise missiles against Syria was that once again the US violated the most profound international law of war: initiating a war of aggression against a nation that posed no threat, imminent or otherwise, to the US or its allies.

Called a “Crime against Peace,” this violation (whose perpetrators, under the precedent set in the Nuremberg Trials that followed World War II, can face capital punishment), is considered worse than any other war crime because, as US Nuremberg prosecutor Robert Jackson explained in his argument at the Nuremberg Trials of Nazi war criminals, a war of aggression is “not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole.”

DONALD TRUMP ORDERED SYRIA STRIKE BASED ON A SECRET LEGAL JUSTIFICATION EVEN CONGRESS CAN’T SEE

Trump used media reports as his justification.

ON FRIDAY NIGHT, President Trump ordered the U.S. military to conduct a bombing attack against the government of Syria without congressional authorization. How can this be constitutional, given the fact that Article I, Section 8 of America’s founding document declares that “The Congress shall have Power … To declare War”?

FOX NOOSE EXCLUSIVE: Syrian neighbors react to US-led strikes with excitement, fear and hope

MANBIJ, Syria – Obada Alstof, a 21-year-old opposition activist from the northern countryside of Homs, was woken up with a loud jolt and tremor in the early hours of Saturday morning.

It came as a welcome surprise

“The explosions were so loud,” Alstof told Fox News in the immediate aftermath. “We had no idea what was happening but we immediately expected that the international coalition was targeting the regime locations.”

The United States and its allies wasted little time before retaliating against the Bashar al-Assad regime over its use last week of chemical weapons, sending bombs raining down at a former missile base - some 15 miles west of Homs. That's where the regime is believed to keep chemical-weapon precursors stockpiled -- in violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention.

According to Pentagon officials, a number of facilities were struck: a chemical weapons storage facility; a chemical weapons equipment storage and crucial command post near Homs; and a scientific research facility in Damascus, believed to be key in the production of chemical and biological weapons.

US-Led Attacks On Syria Performed Badly And Will Only Become Worse

MOSCOW, Russia – Russia can get back to discussing the issue of supplying S-300 missile systems to Syria in the wake of the US strikes on that country, Head of the Russian General Staff’s Main Operations Directorate Sergei Rudskoi told reporters at a press briefing in the Russian Defense Ministry on Saturday according to TASS.

“A few years ago, taking into account a pressing request from some of our Western partners, we abandoned the supplies of the S-300 missile systems to Syria. Considering the latest developments, we deem it possible to get back to discussing this issue, not only in relation to Syria, but to other countries as well,” he said.

This has major significance as a total of 71 US-led missiles were intercepted out of 103 launched. Syria defended its country with only the S-200 missile defense system, so an upgrade to S-300 will render future attacks even more useless.

MOSCOW, April 13. /TASS/. Russia’s defense ministry has evidence proving the United Kingdom’s direct involvement in the organization of the provocation with the alleged chemical attack in Eastern Ghouta, Igor Konashenkov, the ministry’s spokesman, said on Friday.

He said the ministry had found those who took part in filming the rent-a-mob chemical attack in Syria’s Douma and these people told how the video had been shot.

How the CIA’s Secret Torture Program Sparked a Citizen-led Public Reckoning in North Carolina

By Alexandra Moore, Binghamton University, State University of New York

President Donald Trump’s nominee for CIA director, Gina Haspel, is reported to have overseen a U.S. site in Thailand where torture of a suspected terrorist took place. Later she allegedly helped destroy evidence of torture.

Her nomination, pending congressional approval, is viewed by many as further evidence of this administration’s support of torture and an undoing of Obama-era efforts to end it. Her work was allegedly part of a program the CIA launched after 9/11 called Rendition, Detention and Interrogation. From 2002 to at least 2006, the CIA orchestrated disappearances, torture and indefinite detention without charge of suspected terrorists.

As civilian toll climbs in Gaza, focus on Hamas dampens compassion in Israel

Thousands of unarmed Palestinians who have marched to the Gaza-Israel border the past two Fridays have faced deadly fire as they call attention to their plight. But Israelis, seeing the hand of Hamas in the protests, remain primarily focused on their own security.

Trump Backing Away From Attack On Syria

***
Secretary of Defense James Mattis also went out of his way to downplay the chances of an imminent strike. Mattis told the House Armed Services committee that the decision to attack had to be balanced against the risk of a new war escalating out of control.

The sudden level of awareness about the war they were itching to start just a day prior isn’t being officially explained. Instead, Trump et al are all suggesting that the several days of very public talk of a new war never happened at all.

In reality, reports suggest that the White House has been inundated with phone calls over the possible attack on Syria, and that those phone calls were overwhelmingly opposed to the idea.>>>

Trump’s Exit Door Is Open on Syrian Attack

***
Trump claims he’s about to order the attack. But it is also a Trumpean message. The second part is addressed to the Kremlin and speaks about potential US-Russia cooperation to mutual benefit. Trump offers the bait of negotiations on curbing arms race, which is a priority issue for Russia.

Trump apparently thinks he’s ‘negotiating’ a ‘win-win’ solution by dangling a carrot and expecting Moscow to stand aside and letting the US attack on Syria go ahead. It’s tragi-comic, to say the least, that US diplomacy has come to such a pass – POTUS negotiating Syria as if it’s a property deal in Manhattan.

Pompeo: Russians ‘Met Their Match,’ US Killed Hundreds Of Them In Syria

Is President Trump tough enough on Russia? For Secretary of State-nominee Mike Pompeo, the answer comes down to simple body count, as he bragged up recent killings of Russian citizens inside Syrian territory.

At the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Pompeo boasted that “the Russians met their match. A couple hundred Russians were killed,” referring to a US massacre of military contractors back in February. Pompeo insisted these killings prove Trump’s toughness on Russia.

Snipers Shooting Unarmed People at 100 Meters Isn’t a ‘Clash’

As FAIR has noted before (e.g., Extra!, 1/17; FAIR.org, 4/2/18), the term “clash” is almost always used to launder power asymmetry and give the reader the impression of two equal warring sides. It obscures power dynamics and the nature of the conflict itself, e.g., who instigated it and what weapons if any were used. “Clash” is a reporter’s best friend when they want to describe violence without offending anyone in power—in the words of George Orwell, “to name things without calling up mental pictures of them.”

It’s predictable, then, that in coverage of Israel’s recent mass shootings in Gaza—which have killed over 30 Palestinians and injured more than 1,100—the word “clashes” is used to euphemize snipers in fortified positions firing on unarmed protesters 100 meters away:

“Apartheid, Rogue, Terrorist State”: Glenn Greenwald on Israel’s Murder of Gaza Protesters, Reporter

On Saturday, hundreds of mourners gathered in Gaza for the funeral of Palestinian journalist Yaser Murtaja, who was fatally shot by the Israeli army while covering a fresh round of deadly protests along the Israel-Gaza border. Photos show the 30-year-old journalist was wearing a flak jacket clearly marked ”PRESS” at the time of the shooting. He’s one of at least nine Palestinians who were killed by the Israeli army during its brutal crackdown against Friday’s protests. The Palestinian Health Ministry says Israeli forces have killed 31 people in total since Palestinians kicked off a 6-week-long nonviolent protest late last month, dubbed “The Great March of Return.” Both the International Criminal Court and the United Nations have rebuked Israel in recent days and warned its actions on the border could violate international human rights conventions.

Saudi Crown Prince Sued in France for Torture During Visit

A French lawyer has filed a lawsuit in a Paris court against visiting Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, accusing him of complicity in torture in Yemen, an embarrassment for the French government as it rolled out the red carpet for its powerful guest.

Lawyer Joseph Breham, representing a Yemeni human rights group, is suing the crown prince, currently in France on an official visit, for his leading role in the Saudi-led coalition’s airstrikes fighting Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.

The criminal lawsuit claims that Bin Salman knowingly targeted civilians.

Breham told The Associated Press that French courts have “universal jurisdiction” to investigate the case since the lawsuit was filed Monday while the crown prince was present on French soil. But he acknowledged Bin Salman can’t be arrested by French authorities due to his diplomatic immunity.

The Paris prosecutor’s office didn’t respond to requests for comments from the AP.

Trump’s Bombing of Syria Would Make Him a War Criminal

Trump’s bombing of Syria would be an impeachable offense.

Indeed, it would be the ultimate war crime …

The Nuremberg Tribunal which convicted and sentenced Nazis leaders to death conceived of wars of aggression – i.e. wars not launched in self-defense – defined the following as “crimes against peace”, or war crimes:

(i) Planning, preparation, initiation or waging of a war of aggression or a war in violation of international treaties, agreements or assurances;
(ii) Participation in a common plan or conspiracy for the accomplishment of any of the acts mentioned under (i)
The Tribunal considered wars of aggression to be the ultimate war crime, which encompassed all other crimes:

To initiate a war of aggression, therefore, is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole.

A Wedding That Became a Funeral

On December 12, 2013, a United States aerial drone launched four Hellfire missiles on a convoy of 11 cars and pickup trucks during a counterterrorism operation in rural Yemen. The strike killed at least 12 men and wounded at least 15 others, 6 of them seriously.

Yemen authorities initially described all those killed in the attack outside the city of Rad`a as “terrorists.” The US government never officially acknowledged any role in the attack, but unofficially told media that the dead were militants, and that the operation targeted a “most-wanted” member of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) who was wounded and escaped.

Witnesses and relatives of the dead and wounded interviewed by Human Rights Watch in Yemen said the convoy was a wedding procession. They said everyone in the procession was a civilian, including all of the dead and injured, and that the bride received a superficial face wound.

The headline—“Bride and Boom!”—was spectacular, if you think killing people in distant lands is a blast and a half. Of course, you have to imagine that smirk line in giant black letters with a monstrous exclamation point covering most of the bottom third of the front page of the Murdoch-owned New York Post. The reference was to a caravan of vehicles on its way to or from a wedding in Yemen that was eviscerated, evidently by a US drone via one of those “surgical” strikes of which Washington is so proud. As one report put it, “Scorched vehicles and body parts were left scattered on the road.”

US Military Admits: We Deliberately Bombed a Hospital in Iraq

The U.S. military said Thursday that it intentionally bombed a hospital in Mosul, Iraq as part of its efforts to "eradicate" Islamic State (ISIS) fighters.

The attack on the Al Salam hospital complex took place Wednesday at the request of Iraqi forces, with coalition aircraft using "precision-guided munitions," Air Force Col. John Dorrian, spokesperson for the U.S.-led coalition against ISIS, told reporters.

He said "it's very difficult to ascertain with full and total fidelity" that there were no civilian casualties, whether in the building targeted or elsewhere within the hospital complex.

Baghdad hospital bombed

US aircraft hit a Red Crescent maternity hospital in Baghdad, the city's trade fair, and other civilian buildings today, killing several people and wounding at least 25, hospital sources and a Reuters witness said.
The attacks occurred at 9.30am (0630 BST) and caught motorists by surprise as they ventured out during a lull in the bombing. At least five cars were crushed and their drivers burned to death inside, Reuters correspondent Samia Nakhoul said.

Patients and at least three doctors and nurses working at the hospital were among those wounded.

The missiles obliterated wings of Baghdad's trade fair building, which lies next to a government security office that was apparently missed in the bombings.

Iraq's information minister, Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf, told a news conference that overnight bombings by US-led forces killed 24 civilians and injured 186 across the country. In Baghdad, he said, 10 civilians had been killed and 90 wounded.

One Day After Warning Russia of Civilian Casualties, the U.S. Bombs a Hospital in Afghanistan

Yesterday afternoon, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power marched to Twitter to proclaim: “We call on Russia to immediately cease attacks on Syrian oppo[sition and] civilians.” Along with that decree, she posted a statement from the U.S. and several of its closest authoritarian allies — including Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the U.K. — warning Russia that civilian casualties “will only fuel more extremism and radicalization.”

Early this morning, in the Afghan city of Kunduz, the U.S. dropped bombs on a hospital run by Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)). The airstrike killed at least nine of the hospital’s medical staff, and seriously injured dozens of patients. “Among the dead was the Afghan head of the hospital, Abdul Sattar,” reported the New York Times.

Airstrike Hits Doctors Without Borders Hospital in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan — A crowded hospital in the embattled city of Kunduz that treats war wounded came under attack on Saturday and the American military acknowledged that it may have killed 19 patients, staff members and others at the facility while firing on insurgents nearby.

The attack, which the military said in a statement might have been “collateral damage” that occurred while engaging militants, drew a fierce international outcry. The head of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, condemned it and called for a “thorough and impartial investigation.” It also renewed scrutiny of the United States military’s record of causing civilian casualties, which has alienated the Afghan public and often undermined relations with the government here.

Activists Block Alleged UK Missile Plant Producing Projectiles for Saudi Arabia

Over a dozen anti-war activists staged on Monday a blockade of an alleged missile factory in the UK county of Worcestershire at a site owned by the Roxel company manufacturing equipment for rockets and missiles after claiming to have uncovered evidence of the mass assembly of missiles intended for export to Saudi Arabia at the facility.

Jointly owned by the Paris-based Safran group and the Europe-wide armaments manufacturer MBDA, Roxel manufactures an assortment of propulsion systems intended for air to air, air to ground and ground to ground launched missile systems, something anti-war groups fear are being purchased by Saudi Arabia.

Head of French REM Party Sees No Reason to Ban Arms Sales to Saudi Arabia

Richard Ferrand, the head of the ruling La Republique en Marche! (REM) party's faction in the National Assembly of France, said on Tuesday that he did no see why the country's arms sales to Saudi Arabia should be prohibited.

"I think we should maintain clear, frank and friendly relations with Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries, even if only to keep equilibrium in the region and globally… I don't see why that [the arms sales to Riyadh] should be forbidden," Ferrand told the franceinfo broadcaster when asked if such trade were possible.

Ferrand clarified that it would depend on what these arms were to be used in the future, but affirmed that, for him, there was no "particular question" over the arms sales.

Israeli minister praises viral video sniper

Israel’s defence minister has said an Israeli sniper who shot a Palestinian across the border in Gaza in a controversial video “deserves a medal”.

Footage of the incident, in which a soldier expresses joy at having captured it on film, drew condemnation from politicians and rights groups.

Israel’s military said the man who was shot had been orchestrating a riot, and he was hit in the leg.

It said the soldiers involved in the filming will be dealt with.

In the video broadcast on Monday, three men are seen nearing a barrier or fence. The crack of an apparent gunshot is heard and one of the men, who had been standing still and appeared to be unarmed, falls to the ground.

A voice is heard to exuberantly declare in Hebrew: “Wow, what a video. Yes! Son of a bitch! What a video!”

A crowd of people are then seen rushing to retrieve the man who was shot. His condition is not clear.

Israeli soldiers CHEER as a sniper shoots 'unarmed' Palestinian protester in video filmed through rifle sight

The Israeli army has come under fire after a video emerged showing IDF soldiers cheering and rejoicing as a Palestinian protester is shot on the Gaza Strip.

It comes at a highly sensitive time forIsrael's military, which has faced mounting criticism over its use of live fire on the Gaza Strip border, where 31 Palestinians have been killed in recent mass protests.

The video, filmed through the rifle-sight of an Israeli soldier as he opens fire on Palestinians, was captured on December 22 in the area of Kissufim near the Gaza Strip, the Israeli military said today.

International court warns Israel may be charged over Gaza deaths

The International Criminal Court at The Hague may prosecute Israel over the deaths of Arab rioters who clashed with IDF forces on the Gaza-Israel frontier over the past week and a half, a top ICC official warned Sunday.

Chief Prosecutor for the ICC Fatou Bensouda issued a statement Sunday demanding an end to the use of violence on the border between Israel and Gaza, and suggested that both Israel and the Hamas terror organization could be held responsible for the deaths of some 30 Arab rioters and terrorists killed since activists launched six weeks of violent protests on the frontier on March 30th.

"The resort to violence must stop," Bensouda said. "Any person who incites or engages in acts of violence including by ordering, requesting, encouraging or contributing in any other manner to the commission of crimes within ICC's jurisdiction is liable to prosecution before the Court.”

Israeli Defense Minister justifies killing of Palestinian journalists

On the second Friday of the Gaza protests, Israeli snipers shot nearly 500 Palestinians at the Gaza border, killing nine, and bringing the death total in two Fridays to 31. Last Friday’s carnage included the sniping of 6 journalists, killing one of them – 30-year-old Yaser Murtaja, even though he wore a flak jacket clearly marked PRESS.

This is not looking good, so the Israeli army has issued a response:

“The IDF does not intend to shoot at journalists, and the circumstances in which journalists were allegedly injured by IDF gunfire are unknown and are being investigated.”

This would be a contradiction of what Defense Minister Lieberman already promised – that “there would be no investigation”.

Indeed, Lieberman continues to contradict the official army message (as quoted in Haaretz):

'No comment’: Israeli military silent on Syrian airbase attack

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) repeatedly refused to comment on a Russian Defense Ministry statement that accused Israel of targeting a Syrian airbase in Homs province on Sunday night.

Israel Has Faced Little Criticism Over Palestinian Deaths

Thousands of protesters returned to the border this Friday, burning great heaps of tyres to produce a black smokescreen which they hoped would hide them from Israeli snipers. Gaza’s health ministry has said that five people were killed and 1,070 people were wounded on Friday, including 293 by live fire.

The demonstrators know what to expect. A video from the first day of the march shows a protester being shot in the back by an Israeli sniper as he walks away from the fence separating Gaza from Israel. In other footage, Palestinians are killed or wounded as they pray, walk empty-handed towards the border fence, or simply hold up a Palestinian flag. All who get within 300 yards are labelled “instigators” by the Israeli army, whose soldiers have orders to shoot them.
