George W. Bush doesn't deserve the media's efforts at rehabilitation

“Our democracy is only as good as people trust the results,” former President George W. Bush declared in a presumably well-paid speech last week in the United Arab Emirates, a notorious Arab dictatorship. Bush is being exalted as if he is the second coming of George Washington thanks to his implied slams against the Trump administration. But Bush’s actions during his eight year reign did far more to ravage democracy at home and abroad than most people realize.

Thanks to gushing media coverage, Bush is enjoying one of the greatest comebacks in modern American history. In the summer of 2008, only 22 percent of Americans approved of Bush and 41 percent said he was the "worst president ever." Last month, a poll showed that 61 percent of Americans now approve of Bush, and his support among Democrats quintupled, from 11 percent in early 2009 to 54 percent now. If Americans want to understand current political challenges, they need to recall Bush’s forgotten debacles.

Webmaster's Commentary:

A couple of weeks ago, I believe on Faux news, I was watching a very vaccuous interview of the Bush twins, Barbara and Jenna, who apparently have (ghost) written a book on what their years growing up in a highly political family were like, titled "Sisters First."

Were I the television interviewer (something which will never happen, so the Bush family can collectively breathe more easily), my first question would have been "How does it feel, being the daughters of a war criminal"?!?

The screen would have gone blank, with a banner reading "Technical Difficulties", and I would have been dragged off the set, and thrown out the door of the studio in complete ignominy.

But would it have been worth it?!? HELL, YES!! :-)

This country needs to never forget, that under the Bush era, this democratic republic moved from "The Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave" to "The land of the surveilled and the home of the cowed."

Tillerson's Visit to Ankara Seen as Green Light to Turkey's Chemical Attack against Kurds

***
The attack was launched by the FSA militants who are backed by Ankara and at the end of Rex Tillerson's visit to Turkey, raising speculations that the attack was launched after a US green light.

Washington's silence on the attack that has reinvigorated speculations about its suspicious role in the incident comes as it has repeatedly accused the Syrian army forces of conducting chemical weapons against militants, a claim always rejected by Damascus.

Experts believe the US selective approach is yet another indicator of Washington's willingness to make an instrumental use of chemical warfare.

The Trump Peace Plan: As Gaza Dries Out, Israel Turns Off Fresh Water Spigot

Near the end of last month, Haaretz reported that, according to an expert hydrologist, 97 percent of Gaza’s drinking water has been contaminated by sewage and salt. The UN also confirmed that this was the case early last year, and clearly, the situation has remained unchanged even up until 2018. Robert Piper, the UN’s local coordinator for humanitarian and development activities, has called the situation “really very serious” and stated that “[w]e are falling far behind the demand for clean drinking water for Gazans.”

This kind of mistreatment is part and parcel of an overall package of deprivation that continues to plague the Palestinian people. There are some 2 million residents in Gaza affected by this egregious policy, famously one of the most densely populated areas on the planet. Gaza’s water resources are fully controlled by Israel and the division of groundwater is something that was provided for in the Oslo II Accord. However, despite the fact that under the Accord Israel is allocated four times the Palestinian portion of water resources

#1: US Remains the Main Agent of Chaos in Syria

The recent developments in Syria indicate that the US and its Middle East allies are trying to thwart the Syrian Arab Army's progress on the ground and maximize battlefield gains before upcoming peace negotiations in order to get the upper hand, geopolitical analyst Gilbert Mercier told Sputnik.
***
According to the analyst, the recent downing of an Israeli F-16 by the Syrian Arab Army — "which was the first time an Israeli jet was shot down for breaching Syrian air space" — could prompt further incursions on the part of Israel and "tit-for-tat retaliations against Israel by Hezbollah," resulting in the opening of a new front in Lebanon.

The Causes of the “Civil War” in the Words of Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis

“When [the states] entered into the Union of 1789, it was with the undeniable recognition of the power of the people to resume the authority delegated for the purposes of that government, whenever in their opinion, its functions were perverted and its ends defeated . . . the sovereign States here represented have seceded from that Union, and it is a gross abuse of language to denominate the act rebellion or revolution.”

“US Foreign Policy Is the Greatest Crime Since WWII,” Former US Attorney General Ramsey Clark

The US Secretary of State’s criminally insane back handed remarks favoring a civil war, with all the probable loss of lives a civil war would bring, seems to fit as appropriate within a US foreign policy of world domination. Human suffering has never been of any consequence to the financial interests of that 1/10 of 1 per cent of Americans who, to one degree or another, rule us all.

That is the way it has been since the end of the Second World War, a war made possible by US investments and joint ventures in the rearming of Nazi Germany,[ 2] a war that made the USA rich and the first all powerful single superpower.

ISIS is losing badly. Should Trump or Obama get the credit?
http://m.washingtonexaminer.com/isis-is-losing-badly-should-trump-or-o...

It is becoming increasingly clear that the Islamic State is on the ropes in Iraq and Syria, and its defeat is just a matter of time.

What is less clear is whose strategy produced the victory.
***
The president himself declared Thursday that more progress in the campaign to defeat Islamic State had been made in the last eight months than in "many, many previous years, all combined."

But former Defense Secretary Ash Carter, in a lengthy essay published by Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, argued the Trump administration is crowing about the results of what is essentially Obama's strategy>>>
***
But it is clear the military favored the Trump approach, as evidenced by the parting comments of Lt. Gen. Stephen Townsend as he prepared to relinquish command of the counter-ISIS operation in August.

"We don't get second-guessed a lot. Our judgment here on the battlefield in the forward areas is trusted. And we don't get 20 questions with every action that happens on the battlefield and every action that we take," Townsend said. "I don't know of a commander in our armed forces that doesn't appreciate that."

Milwaukee Jail Staffers Charged in ‘Appalling’ Death of Inmate Denied Water

Three Milwaukee County Jail staffers were given felony charges Monday for their involvement in the 2016 death of a mentally ill inmate, Terrill Thomas, who was denied water for a week as punishment for bad behavior.

At the time of Thomas' death, the jail was overseen by conservative activist Sheriff David Clarke, who retired in August 2017 to join a committee supporting US President Donald Trump.

Sheriff's Maj. Nancy Evans, the jail's former commander, was charged with felony misconduct in office and misdemeanor obstruction after lying to investigators about how long Thomas was denied water and withholding surveillance video that showed water being cut off to Thomas' cell and not being turned on again.

A Slight Bump to Israeli Arrogance

Israeli arrogance might not have ended Saturday, but it surely cracked. Suddenly it became clear that Israel is not alone in the Middle Eastern, that even its immense military power has its limits. How “America First” Became the Presidency of the Pentagon

The Pentagon’s new National Defense Strategy is the perverse embodiment of the Trump administration’s “America First” policy, putting American military and corporate empire above all else, even if it leads the country into financial ruin and a dangerous global war.
***
During the 2016 presidential campaign, Donald Trump won over many American voters by his promise to put “America First.” Though this catchphrase was thought – at the time — to imply a populist message of putting the American people first, Trump has largely failed to deliver on his promises to roll back the corporate welfare state and instead invest in everyday Americans — as evidenced by his tax reform bill, the only legislative “victory” of his young presidency

While most of the talk about the Pentagon’s proposals for various wars to President Trump has focused on requests for more troops in more countries, a much less publicized effort has also been getting rubber stamped, one giving commanders in those wars increasing autonomy on operations.

Buried in the details of almost every proposal from Iraq and Syria to smaller operations like US troops in Yemen and Somalia, there is always a mention of commanders wanting to be able to conduct strikes at will, both airstrikes and ground raids.

American Hysteria Over Russia Will Lead To Nuclear War

Russian media reacts strongly to the American Nuclear Posture Review, which tries to convince its readers that Russia is trying to take over the world

The US Department of Defense published its 2018 Nuclear Posture Review. Russia Has The United States By The Balls In Syria

Russia has humiliated the United States again. US forces are in Syria for “economic assets,” said Russian officials. They are not there to fight terrorism or to establish peace in the region. No, they are there to create trouble, declared Russian officials.[1] And they’ve got the evidence to prove it:

“The MoD was referring to an incident which took place on Tuesday in Deir Ez-Zor province, as a Syrian militia unit was moving against a “sleeper cell” of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS). The operation was prompted by a surge in shelling of the positions of Syrian government forces in the area over the past few days, attributed to the covert activities of IS terrorists, the ministry said in a statement on Thursday.

US Seizing Economic Assets in Syria Instead of Fighting ISIL

The Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement on Thursday that the US-led coalition’s shelling of the Syrian militiamen proves that rather than fighting the ISIL, Washington has been seizing Syria’s economic assets.

The recent incident once again shows that the United States’ illegal military presence in Syria is actually aimed at taking control of the country’s economic assets and not at fighting against the ISIL international terror group," the statement read, TASS reported.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, on February 7, "a pro-government militia unit, conducting surveillance and research activities near the al-Isba oil refinery (17 kilometers Southeast of the Salhiyah settlement) to eliminate a militant group shelling the positions of government troops, was shelled with mortars and multiple-launch rocket systems."

Now, some politicians say they’ll protect us by adding massive amounts to the Pentagon budget. This seems like a no-brainer: feel threatened, give more money to the military. But it isn’t.

Practically everyone from the president on down, though, seems to take it as a given. “In confronting these horrible dangers,” Donald Trump said during his State of the Union, “I’m calling on Congress” to “fully fund our great military.”

He argued that the lack of predictable funding has “eroded” US advantages in technology and warfighting, and pleaded with the lawmakers to pass a military budget.

US Airstrikes in Yemen Have Increased Sixfold Under Trump

With the Saudi invasion of Yemen turning sour and causing a humanitarian disaster, and the US having withdrawn most of its troops from the country early in that invasion, US officials have largely sought to downplay their military involvement in Yemen.

In reality, however, the number of US airstrikes being carried out has increased precipitously since President Trump took office, with 21 airstrikes on Yemen reported in 2016, and a more than sixfold increase leaving the 2017 figure at 131 strikes. 10 have been reported so far in January of 2018, suggesting that the escalation continues.

The strikes are theoretically targeted at al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) and ISIS, though in practice with US troops in Yemen only “intermittently,” according to the Pentagon’s own accounting, it’s difficult to see how officials could know with any certainty what is being targeted by US warplanes, beyond being remote areas where such factions are believed to be operating.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Presidents Barak Obama and Donald Trump now have one thing in common, both blood-soaked, and vile, besides having been - and being President; responsibility for colluding in Saudi War Crimes in Yemen.

I remember years ago, as a kid, having swallowed the koolade of "America cannot, and would never do, something morally wrong" to another country.

Now, as an adult, and evaluating the global deteriorization demonstrated by world events and falling standards of living,, I am seeing massive US government military interventions through which to expropiateother country's natural resources to which this country has absolutely no moral right; regime change of governments, to make those governments more western-centric, and to insure that those resourcesm are only sold in US dollars.

The images I am about to present are absolutely "lose your lunch" real, graphic, and absolutely ugly, which it comes to Yemen; but I have absolutely no choice but to continue linking to them until the carnage in Yemen stops.

Due to Us/ Saudi blockades on Yemeni ports, food cannot get into the county; as a consequence children are starving to death from these blockades.

And now, Yemenis are dying from diptheria and cholera, because there is scarce little medication to treat them. the kids you see in this video may be the lucky ones, who are getting treatment in time. Video:children being treated for cholera

I would like to remind our readers that this is being done in your names, and with your tax dollars. We need to have a blunt, and honest, national conversation about why the US government is in collusion with Saudi Arabia in this genocide against the Yemeni people.

Mad Dog Mattis Wants to Make US Military More Lethal

Speaking to Congressional Republicans during a visit to Greenbriar resort on Thursday, Defense Secretary James Mattis announced that he believes the US military needs to be made “more lethal,” and pushing for yet more money.

After a massive military spending increase last yar, Mattis says he wants another $50 billion tacked on for next year. He mocked the idea of the military being an “equal opportunity employer” and emphasized lethality.

Mattis had similarly pushed the idea of making US troops more lethal in September>>>

Saudis Have Lost Their Gamble in Yemen But Can't Find Honorable Way to Leave

Geopolitical analyst Ulf Sandmark says Saudi Arabia is stuck in the war in Yemen without finding an honorable way to end it and instead continues to gamble by redoubling its input like gambling addicts. Speaking in an exclusive interview with FNA, Ulf Sandmark said that the Saudis, who very much relied on their mercenaries and air power, underestimated the barefoot Yemeni fighters and are now stuck without an honorable way to end the war they started. According to the analyst, the British, who are financially benefiting from the arms sales to Saudi Arabia, are geopolitically looking for destabilization of the South West Asia region with the aim to block the emerging Chinese New Silk Road (NSR) policy, which is a threat to the British geopolitical policy of Divide and Rule. Ulf Sandmark is a Swedish economist and human rights activist as well as a longtime collaborator of American political figure Lyndon H. LaRouche.

War Crimes and Genocide in Yemen: Death, Destruction, Starvation

The Saudi-led coalition unleashed a barrage of air strikes on Yemen, slaughtering as many as 71 civilians (many of them children) within a period of 48 hours, reported the Qatar-based news network Al Jazeera on Christmas Eve. This massacre attained little attention and dissolved into history, forgotten. On the next day, December 26, the coalition targeted more sites, killing at least 68 men, women and children.

Those who are not annihilated by bombs risk dying from starvation. The Yemeni people are under blockade, enforced intentionally, with an aim to starve them into submission.

By definition a vicious war crime, it is not a newsworthy subject across the Western media sphere. Silence is particularly well kept at the U.S. news network MSNBC, found a study conducted by an investigative team of Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR). The leading liberal channel did not air a “single segment devoted specifically to Yemen in the second half of 2017.”

US 'Invested In A Failed Strategy' In Afghanistan

US President Donald Trump's decision to reject talks with the Taliban will only trigger more attacks and will only aggravate the war, a former Taliban member has said.

Following a string of deadly assaults in the capital, Kabul, this month, Trump on Monday announced that Washington was not going to hold talks with the Taliban, which has been leading an armed rebellion since it was overthrown from power by US-led forces in 2001.

Responding to Trump's decision, the Taliban said war would "increase the human and financial losses of American troops".

100 Years Ago US Troops Attacked Russia's Pacific Coast and Committed Atrocities

Four men, accused of being partisans, are alleged to have been buried alive. The wife of a partisan is said to have been “pierced by bayonets and drowned in a garbage pit” The author (who is unnamed) states that his own elderly father was taken as a hostage by Allied forces from the town of Kharitonovka. He was returned home alive but in a bloodied condition. He is said to have died a few days later, after asking “Why did they torture me…”? The man is said to have left five orphans behind. It further describes young men ... who were “tortured for days, had their teeth knocked out and their tongues cut off”... I was starkly reminded of this fact again during a December 2017 visit to Vladivostok, when quite by chance I came upon a full page article in the December 5 issue of the local newspaper The Competitor under the following headline: “Atrocities of the American Invaders in Primorye”.

The Genocide Conspiracy Against North Korea: An Open Letter to the International Criminal Court

The American threats against North Korea continue to mount and with them the threat of the genocide of the people of North Korea by the United States of America and its allies. The meeting of the USA, Canada and other nations that attacked North Korea in 1950 held in Vancouver, Canada, on January 16, which some hoped would lead to a political solution, instead took on the character of a meeting of criminals who by their presence, agreement and actions made them parties to a conspiracy to commit genocide, a crime under the statute of the International Criminal Court and the Genocide Convention of 1948. The threats made against North Korea are due to one single fact: the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea refuses to accept the world hegemony of the American Empire. It has nothing to do with nuclear weapons...

US no “peace broker” in Palestine; Trump cannot destroy a “peace process” that doesn’t exist.

Trump’s call to enshrine Jerusalem as Israel’s capital by relocating the U.S. embassy there has evoked a chorus of denunciations — coming both from true outrage and as lip service. The main claim is that the president has wrecked the peace process. However, although his anti-Palestinian action deserves condemnation, Trump cannot destroy a “peace process” that doesn’t exist.

Beware the Last Apartheid Regime in the World

The Trump White House should hold its head in shame. Instead of reversing President Donald Trump’s universally-condemned decision to declare Al-Quds as Israel’s new capital, it sent this week Vice President Mike Pence to the Israeli Knesset to give a speech loudly praising “the miracle of Israel,” and presenting America’s support for Israel as a question of siding with good over evil.

Far from it, America has sided with evil over good and the desperate attempt by Pence to focus heavily on defending President Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem Al-Quds as Israel’s capital, citing biblical stories about the city, and suggesting that King David’s declaration of it as the capital millennia ago still applies, won’t change the irrefutable fact that this is still an apartheid regime condemned and isolated the world over.

Not surprising, Pence used his speech to also appease Tel Aviv by attacking the Iran nuclear deal, terming the pact as a “disaster,” and accusing Iran of being a brutal dictatorship that seeks to dominate the entire Arab world. He vowed the US would “no longer certify” the deal, leading to applause from the Israeli MPs.

Lest the pro-Israel US vice president forgets, the country he criticized is the same country that helped Iraq and Syria defeat the terrorist group of ISIL, Al-Qaeda and their affiliates in the Levant.>>>

Over 650 Syrian civilians killed in US-led airstrikes in 40 months: SOHR

A monitoring group says more than 600 children have lost their lives ever since the US-led coalition purportedly fighting the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group started its aerial assaults against residential areas across Syria back in September 2014.

The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that 2,815 people, including 655 minors and 481 women, were killed in US-led aerial attacks against civilian areas in the conflict-plagued Arab country over the past 40 months.

The London-based watchdog said the aerial assaults were conducted in the provinces of Hasakah, Raqqah, Aleppo, Idlib and Dayr al-Zawr, noting that the remains of 19 victims still await identification.

It added that the US-led coalition continues to carry out airstrikes across Syria despite the fact that the militants are controlling only pockets of Syrian territories following their humiliating defeats in the northern and eastern parts of the country.

Rex Tillerson Rewrites Syria, Ultimately Blames Iran, Essentially Declares War

Without telling you explicitly, and with no authority from Congress as required by the Constitution, the U.S. has invaded and occupied Syria with no intention to leave

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson presented remarks on The Way Forward for the United States Regarding Syria to the Hoover Institute at Stanford on January 17.

To start, Tillerson proved his mettle in lying for the U.S. Empire by blaming Syrian president Bashar al-Assad for the rise of ISIS. First Tillerson implied Assad had the nerve to fight a war and win and then he says that’s why ISIS moved in:

In December of 2016, the key city of Aleppo fell to the regime after a brutal campaign that essentially destroyed that city, which had a population over two million people before the war. This symbolized the regime’s ruthless determination to regain momentum in the conflict. It also led to – Assad to wrongly think that he would maintain power without addressing the Syrian regime’s – the Syrian people’s legitimate grievances.”

The civil war in Syria was horrific in and of itself. But Syria was thrown into an even greater state of turmoil with the emergence of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS.>>>

Donald Trump’s First Year and the Illusion of Choice

The striking thing about Trump’s first twelve months compared to the Obama administration is not how different his foreign policies have been, but how similar.

January 20 marks one year since Donald Trump officially became the 45th President of the United States. His supporters, boosted by comments the Donald made on the campaign trail, hoped his Presidency would mark a shift away from a neocon/liberal interventionist foreign policy. In fact we’ve just had more of the same.

GOP CANDIDATE FOR PENNSYLVANIA SPECIAL ELECTION IS A FORMER ABU GHRAIB INTERROGATION CONSULTANT

RICK SACCONE, THE GOP nominee in Pennsylvania’s 18th congressional district, is a former intelligence support consultant for the U.S. Army at the infamous Abu Ghraib prison. He has written extensively in support of interrogation tactics widely condemned by human rights experts as torture.

Over the years, drawing upon his experience in Iraq, Saccone has promoted waterboarding, stress positions, sleep deprivation, as well as threatening prisoners with execution, dogs, and electrocution, as necessary tactics for obtaining information from detainees.

On Thursday, President Donald Trump appeared in North Fayette Township in Pennsylvania to promote Saccone’s candidacy. Despite the district going to Trump by some 20 points in November, the GOP is at risk of losing it to Democrat Conor Lamb.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I am having a Jean-Luc Picard double face-palm, at warp speed, upon reading this.

Holy Heironymous Bosch, Pennsyvania GOP, could you do NO BETTER than selecting a candidate who obviously enjoyed torturing prisoners of war at Abu Ghraib so much, that he still briskly advocates these practices today?!?

Who the hell were the deaf, dumb, and blind people on your selection committee who thought this guy was THE perfectly best choice for the job, and that no other candidate could possibly be as great for the job as this guy?!?

It has been proven, by mountains of scientific evidence, that torture rarely produces actionable intelligence; it simply gets the tortured individual to say what he thinks his torturers want him to say to get the torture to stop.

There was a German interrogator, during World War Two, whose name was Hans Scharff, and he had a brilliant record of extracting information from American and British prisoners without ever once using violence.

Hans Scharff

In fact, after the war, the US military so respected his tactics that he was invited to teach seminars in interrogation to American, using his techniques.

Sure as hell looks like US foreign policy has moved from that kind of treatment of Prisoners of War to something just to the right of Atilla the Hun: and Saccone was complicit in this at Abu Ghraib, completely violating the Geneva Accords, to which the US government is a signatory!!

To the Republicans in Pennsylvania who got this guy nominated, congratulations; because of what this man has done, and what people now know about him, you have probably just thrown this election to his Democratic opponent.

Russia has mocked American attempts to line up world support for the past week’s anti-government demonstrations in Iran, even sarcastically suggesting that the U.S. let the police department of Ferguson, Missouri teach Iranians how to really put down civil unrest — a reference it returned to during U.N. meetings Friday.

“By your logic, we should have initiated a Security Council meeting after the well-known events in Ferguson,” said Russian UN Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya, addressing the U.S. delegation.

Trump Nominee Wrote One of Infamous 'Torture Memos'

A number of President Donald Trump’s judicial nominations have collapsed in recent days after the candidates’ utter lack of qualifications was revealed, signaling (at a minimum) poor vetting on the part of the administration. The most stunning failure was Matthew Peterson, who became an internet sensation and meme generator when he could not answer even basic questions about U.S. law. Also in the candidates’ graveyard is Jeff Mateer, who in 2015 stated that transgender children are part of “Satan’s plan.” Mateer also prophesied that same-sex marriage would lead to bestiality and lamented the banning by some states of harmful and bogus “conversion therapies” for gay and lesbian persons.

One additional problematic candidate is scheduled for a hearing this month: Howard C. Nielson>>>

Nielson’s memo is here in the OLC’s Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) reading room. At the time he wrote the memo, Nielson worked under Stephen Bradbury, one of the infamous authors of the “torture memos,” which Sen. John McCain has described as “permission slips” for torture.

Israel's New Death Penalty Bill 'Targets Palestinians'

The Israeli government's proposal to make it easier for judges to hand out the death penalty for "terrorist activity" has been condemned as "fascist" by Palestinian politicians and rights groups, who fear it will give Israel legal cover to target Palestinians.

A bill to amend existing legislation regulating the use of the death sentence passed its preliminary reading in Israel's parliament, the Knesset, on Wednesday with backing from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's ruling coalition.

Aida Touma-Suleiman, a Palestinian citizen of Israel and member of the Knesset, told Al Jazeera on Friday that while the bill does not specify any group, it is "intended mainly for the Palestinian people".
