Ex-Donald Rumsfeld Aide to Land Middle East Policy Job in Trump Administration

A former adviser to neoconservative darling Donald Rumsfeld is slated to become one of the highest ranking policy officials for Middle Eastern affairs in US President Donald Trump’s administration, according to a new report.

David Schenker, a director at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, is expected to be named assistant secretary of state for near eastern affairs, the Hill reported Thursday, citing senior administration officials. Schenker was an adviser to former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld from 2002 to 2006, when the US began its years-long wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Classical Liberalism Strikes Out

Is the Trump presidency an example of liberalism’s decay, or a last gasp to save the system?

We can see how the attraction for a strong, blustering, iconoclastic leader would arise in this context. The appeal of Trump arose from the pervasive sense of helplessness by a broad swath of Americans, especially those who have suffered most from the dissolution of families, churches, communities, and a range of constitutive bonds. On the one hand, I see the effort to exert some control over our destiny – by demanding an economy that works for average citizens, by insisting that a national culture amount to more than borderless non-judgmentalism, and rejecting the “political correctness” accompanying a sexual revolution whose wreckage is accumulating exponentially – as a “last gasp,” as you put it, and even an admirable one.

Germany preparing for WAR? German teens enlist in record numbers thanks to social media

More than 2,000 soldiers under the age of 18 served in the Bundeswehr last year.

The figures show the number of teenagers under the age of 18 that joined the army ranks for a six-month trial period last year exceeded 2,000 for the first time.

A total of 2,128 minors served in the Bundeswehr last year, including 448 girls.

Germany is one of the few countries where people under 18 can register their interest in signing up.

Wintry Conditions Freeze US Navy Ship at Canadian Port

The US Navy’s newest littoral combat ship, unveiled by shipyard workers in a snow-covered ribbon-cutting ceremony on December 16, was supposed to have completed its journey to Florida by now, but is instead stuck at a port in Canada.

"Icy conditions delayed the ship's departure due to a limited number of tugs," Lt. Cmdr. Courtney Hillson told the Navy Times on Tuesday. The ship's departure from Buffalo, New York, was postponed from December 16 to December 20. The ship then made a routine port call in Montreal, Canada, where it remains docked, Buffalo News reported.

Trump’s new nuke ‘posture’: Draft allows nuclear response to conventional attack and new warheads

The Trump administration is expected to reveal a new, hawkish nuclear doctrine, which reportedly incorporates more cases in which it would use nuclear weapons, and also mandates the development of smaller-yield, simpler warheads.

The new Nuclear Posture Review (NPR) is expected to be revealed sometime after President Donald Trump’s state-of-the-union address in late January and will be the first update of the key strategy document in eight years.

According to Jon Wolfsthal, a former special assistant to Barack Obama on arms control and non-proliferation, the final draft that he reviewed is pretty hawkish, but some of the more aggressive suggestions from the initial variant have been dropped. Wolfsthal described the document to The Guardian.

Trump to call on Pentagon, diplomats to play bigger arms sales role - sources

The Trump administration is nearing completion of a new “Buy American” plan that calls for U.S. military attaches and diplomats to help drum up billions of dollars more in business overseas for the U.S. weapons industry, going beyond the limited assistance they currently provide, officials said.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Hey, President Trump, I will go you one better; every American official responsible for signing off and promoting this policy, should be compelled TO have their car license plate read: WE'RE AMERICA'S MERCHANTS OF DEATH; AND WE'LL SELL TO ANYONE :-)

Are toxic chemicals at Air Force bases leading to cancer, low birth weight?

For 25 years, Dan Cruz delivered mail at the Peterson Air Force Base and drank the water. Then came cancer – thyroid, prostate, testicular – he said never before seen in his family.

"I'm the only one that's been diagnosed with cancer not once, not twice, but three times. People on my route… cancer has come upon them and sometimes stage 4," Cruz told CBS News correspondent Barry Petersen.

The cause could be firefighting foam used since the 1970s at Air Force bases and airports across the country, something meant to save lives that may have harmed them instead. The foam contains highly fluorinated chemicals, known as PFCs. It is suspected of causing some cancers and underweight births.

US Army Major Exposes American Warfare's Giant Open Secret

It’s a remarkably old story actually. Ever since V-J Day in August 1945, Congress has repeatedly ducked its explicit constitutional duties when it comes to war, handing over the keys to the eternal use of the military to an increasingly imperial presidency. An often deadlocked, ever less popular Congress has cowered in the shadows for decades as Americans died in undeclared wars. Judging by the lack of public outrage, perhaps this is how the citizenry, too, prefers it. After all, they themselves are unlikely to serve. There’s no draft or need to sacrifice anything in or for America’s wars. The public’s only task is to stand for increasingly militarized pregame sports rituals and to “thank” any soldier they run into.

Not a lot of people remember this, but George W Bush actually campaigned in 2000 against the interventionist foreign policy that the United States had been increasingly espousing. Are our Leaders Really that Stupid? Or...

2017 saw the airing of Ken Burns’ PBS series “The Vietnam War.” It leaves no doubt that massive air strikes, bombings and napalm that killed civilians turned the citizenry against the US. Even those people whom we purported to be helping grew to hate our presence in their country. Our military commanders and political leaders came to understand that we were so despised by the Vietnamese – including our allies in the South – that ultimately, we could not win and had to get out. Perhaps more than anything else, it was the killing of civilians that brought about the US’s ignominious defeat.

Yet, here we ago again! The numbers are debated, but the fact is that our drones, planes, missiles, bombs and on-the-ground soldiers are killing thousands of innocent civilians throughout the Middle East.

How Jeff Bezos' Washington Post Became The US Military-Industrial Complex's Chief Propagandist

It used to be that the New York Times and the Washington Post competed against each other to be the chief propagandist for the hundred or so top firms who sell to the US federal government - the 100 top “federal contractors,” almost all of which are Pentagon contractors - mainly these are weapons-manufacturing firms, such as the biggest, Lockheed Martin. The federal government is a large part of these firms’ essential market; so, invasions by the US against other countries require lots of their goods and services; and, also, America’s foreign allies additionally buy these weapons; and, right now, US President Trump is demanding that they increase their ‘defense’ budgets to buy more of them. Wars produce corporate profits if (like in the United States) the military suppliers are private corporations instead of government-owned (socialized). Selling wars is crucial to such firms’ bottom lines.

Lies We Tell Ourselves

Military service, war, sacrifice—when I was 17, I felt sure this would bring me meaning, adulation, even glory. It went another way. Sixteen years later, my generation of soldiers is still ensnared in an indecisive, unfulfilling series of losing wars: Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Yemen, Somalia, Niger—who even keeps count anymore? Sometimes, I allow myself to wonder what it’s all been for.

No More Worshiping of the Military

I was in the grocery store a while back when, after my items were tabulated, the checkout clerk asked, “Would you like to contribute to the Wounded Warriors fund?”

I glanced at the line of people to my left — a little cross-section of America — and feeling a little skeptical about how they’d respond, I said, “No I don’t think so. I’d rather put my money towards some anti-war organization working to try and make sure that there are no more wounded soldiers, and to relief organizations that are supporting the hundreds of thousands of victims of America’s illegal wars abroad.”

The clerk looked a little taken aback and muttered “okay,” but to my surprise, nobody spoke up in the line. I was expecting at least one person to call me out as a “terrorist supporter” or a “commie” or who knows what, but instead there was just silence.

US Plans to Recognize Kurdish Area in Syria 3x Size of Lebanon 'Soon' - Reports

Washington is planning 'concrete steps' toward providing a Syrian Democratic Forces-controlled area in northern Syria's eastern Euphrates area three times the size of Lebanon with diplomatic recognition, a leading Arabic international newspaper has reported.

The 28,000 square km territory, controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces, a collection of predominantly Kurdish militias including the YPG People's Protection Units, took its first step toward US recognition after US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis promised to send US diplomats to SDF-controlled areas to work alongside US troops operating in the region, the official said.

Webmaster's Commentary:

A short question, President Trump; IF, in fact, such reports on this deal are true, have both Syria's Al Assad, and Russia's Putin, gotten the memo on it?!?

Because once again, logically-minded people are going to look at this announcement, and mutter to themselves that the American government and military must have, yet again, collectively become insane, to invite war with Russia inside Syria.

FRANCE ACCUSES U.S., ISRAEL AND SAUDI ARABIA OF TRYING TO SPARK WAR WITH IRAN

Updated | French President Emmanuel Macron has accused the U.S., Israel and Saudi Arabia of instigating a war as their mutual foe, Iran, was rocked by a week of protests.

Macron on Wednesday joined several other world leaders to weigh in on protests that began as demonstrations against austerity measures under Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and later spilled into isolated, deadly clashes between civilians and security forces. The French leader called for dialogue with Tehran and criticized three of his international partners for pursuing what he considered bellicose policies toward a country the trio have increasingly sought to isolate and undermine in recent years.

“The official line pursued by the United States, Israel and Saudi Arabia, who are our allies in many ways, is almost one that would lead us to war,” Macron told reporters, according to Reuters.

It was “a deliberate strategy for some,” he added.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Unfortunately, of course, should these efforts fail, we are very much looking at a "false flag" to be blamed on Iran as the "justification" for an invasion.

What I would like to very seriously impress upon President Trump; President Macron, and Prince Salmon, is the very excellent results the Russian military have had in Syria recently.

They have weaponry that has been shone to work in intense battlefield conditions.

I would strongly caution that if the US, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and France attack Iran, they will be staring into abyss of such weapons, and into the faces of the successfully adept and capable Russian military personnel who know how use them.

Scott Adams Warns Donald Trump on Marijuana: 'I'm Gonna Turn on This President'

Dilbert cartoonist Scott Adams warned President Donald Trump on Friday not to stop states from legalizing marijuana, warning: “I’m gonna turn on this president faster than anyone has ever turned on him.”

Adams said that Attorney General Jeff Sessions’s decision Thursday to rescind an Obama administration policy from 2013 that refrained from enforcing federal marijuana laws in states that had legalized the drug was not necessarily a bad sign for users of medical and recreational marijuana, since Sessions left discretion in the hands of each state’s U.S. Attorney. He did not order a crackdown by federal law enforcement on states that had legalized it.

However, Adams said that the decision to maintain marijuana as a Schedule I drug — the most dangerous category of drugs, with “no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse” — was a worrisome sign.

Global Warfare. Preparing for World War III, Targeting Iran

Recent news reports point to a so-called “secret plan” to destroy and destabilize Iran, the first step of which is a color revolution.

The fact of the matter is that these not so secret plans to wage war on Iran have been on the drawing board of the Pentagon since the mid-nineties as outlined in Michel Chossudovsky’s 2010 article published below (scroll down):

“The medium term strategic objective is to target Iran and neutralize Iran’s allies, through gunboat diplomacy. The longer term military objective is to directly target China and Russia.

Does The Narcotics Trade Influence U.S. Global Policy ?

Few who look at the US occupation of Afghanistan, can do so without considering a few realities. When America entered Afghanistan in 2001, reality began to distort. America’s allies on the ground were call the “Northern Alliance.” In actuality, they were Uzbek and Tajik drug lords with private armies who had been financially gutted by the Taliban’s anti-drug policies.

There was virtually no opium production in Afghanistan in 2001 when America took on the Taliban seeking what Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld described as literally “dozens” of advanced underground bases that housed an army of up to 30,000 al Qaeda fighters.

These bases with supplied graphics, reminiscent of Netanyahu’s Iran bomb graphic, were shown on TV talk shows. America is still seeking these bases, none have yet to be found.

An Apology and Explanation - Robert Parry

The demonization of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russia is just the most dangerous feature of this propaganda process – and this is where the neocons and the liberal interventionists most significantly come together. The U.S. media’s approach to Russia is now virtually 100 percent propaganda. Does any sentient human being read the New York Times’ or the Washington Post’s coverage of Russia and think that he or she is getting a neutral or unbiased treatment of the facts? For instance, the full story of the infamous Magnitsky case cannot be told in the West, nor can the objective reality of the Ukrane coup in 2014. The American people and the West in general are carefully shielded from hearing the “other side of the story.” Indeed to even suggest that there is another side to the story makes you a “Putin apologist” or “Kremlin stooge.”

What follows are a few more background points and a view on the developments since. A color revolution or revolt in Iran have only little chances of success. But even as the fail they can be used as pretext for additional sanctions and other anti-Iranian measures. The current incidents are thus only one part of a much larger plan.

How Donald Trump Learned to Love War in 2017

The president promised to deliver peace. But in his first year, he expanded every war he inherited.

President Trump has maintained or expanded the wars that he inherited from his predecessor.

As Jennifer Wilson and I pointed out in an appropriately titled column in August, “Donald Trump Is Dropping Bombs at Unprecedented Levels.” Within eight months of assuming office, Trump — with the announcement of six “precision aistrikes” in Libya — had bombed every country that former President Barack Obama had in eight years. One month after that, the United States surpassed the 26,172 bombs that had been dropped in 2016. Through the end of December 2017, Trump had authorized more airstrikes in Somalia in one year (33), than George W. Bush and Obama had since the United States first began intervening there in early 2007 (30).

US Base in al-Tanf Fully Blocked by Syrian Troops

Russian General Staff Chief Army General Valery Gerasimov said that there was movement of militants from the US base in Syria’s At-Tanf, which is currently fully blocked by the Syrian army.

The US base in Syria’s al-Tanf is fully blocked by the Syrian army, Russian General Staff Chief Army General Valery Gerasimov told the Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper in an interview issued on Wednesday.

“In At-Tanf the area is blocked by the Syrian troops … The most important thing is that we witness movement of militants from there,” Gerasimov said.

Another site, where according to Gerasimov the militants are being trained, is the Shaddadi camp in northeastern Syria.

"That is a territory controlled by the Kurds and there is also a US military base there. Moreover, some 800 people more arrived at the Shaddadi camp from the east bank of the Euphrates, from the area where the Kurds carried out an offensive… In fact, that is IS [Islamic State or Daesh]," he said.

Pope circulates Nagasaki image under heading, ‘The fruit of war'

Francis, for this holiday period, asked that a small card be printed and distributed, which on its reverse side carries the inscription, “The fruit of war,” running above the pope’s signature. The front side of the card displays a picture taken by American photographer Joseph Roger O’Donnell, a Marine who worked for four years after the atomic blasts in Hiroshima and Nagasaki documenting their impact. The shot shows a young Japanese boy standing in line at a crematorium with his dead younger brother on his back.

Re-reading the Greats: Jean Paul Sartre, Pepe Escobar, et. al.

For our bi-polar world....

I’ve been reading Pepe Escobar’s articles for over 30 years–since the time I would read re-prints of his “Asia Times” articles in The Japan Times–my daily reading when I lived in Japan. These days, I mostly catch his work at a number of excellent global websites.

Did the CIA stop a bloodbath in Saint Petersburg? The Saker

I am not holding my breath for the future, but any positive development deserves some recognition, especially in our otherwise very depressing times.

The Russian President Vladimir Putin has thanked his US counterpart Donald Trump for help in preventing a terrorist attack in St. Petersburg. Data provided by the CIA enabled Russian security services to find and detain terrorists

The Russian leader expressed his gratitude in a telephone call, adding that the Russian security services would also always share information with their US colleagues, were they to obtain data on any planned attacks on US soil.

Who says that a World War can't happen again? The spectre of 2018

Anyone saying that another world war can't happen, hasn't understood the problem of the present global instability in its fullest sense. While the US has certainly faced deadlock with Russia over Ukraine, and loss of power and influence in the Middle-East, the coming year presents us a few items which have the serious potential to push global instability to the point of world war.

Outside of the echo chamber of the US media's insulated creation of simulated reality, where pushing for war and conflict doesn't actually lead to one, serious experts point to some very worrisome signs for the coming year.
