Turkey's Ankara False Flag Blaming Syrian Kurds Clears Pathway to Turkish-Saudi Gulf State Invasion of Syria and WWIII

By Joachim Hagopian
February 22, 2016

Turkey’s been blasting away all month long shelling heavy artillery mortars from its side along the Turkish border killing Syrian National Army soldiers, Syrian Kurd forces (YPG), at least, one Russian advisor and defenseless civilians in border villages inside Syria. Widespread reportage of the ongoing daily Turkish artillery barrage into Syria was publicly confirmed by the Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davuto?lu since February 13th. Though a NATO member, longtime close US ally and next to Empire and Israel among the world’s leading partners-in-crime for state-sponsored terrorism, earlier this week Turkey was asked by Washington to cease its border aggression. Yet Turkish President Recep Erdogan has elected to defy his US master and continues his daily bombardment of northern Syrian villages and Syrian militarily controlled outposts abandoned recently by decimated escaping Islamic State terrorists.

Israeli / Saudi Arabia Tactical Nuclear Strike on Yemen (Neutron Bomb)

They have already tested their bomb in Yemen! So far it hasn't been much help!

Webmaster addition: It is a huge explosion, but I am not convinced it is nuclear without radiation readings. It could be a bunker buster that hit an underground munitions storage depot.

Europe is following Obama – washing its hands of Palestine and why

The conclusion I draw from everything I have learned from nearly half a century of engagement in various capacities with the conflict in and over Palestine that became Israel is that there are two main reasons for the refusal of the major Western powers to confront Zionism in order to provide the Palestinians with an acceptable amount of justice..

One is the influence (declining a little but still awesome) that the Zionist lobby in all of its manifestations has in the corridors of power together with unlimited funds to buy politicians.

The other is fear that if pushed further than they were prepared to go, Israel’s leaders would press a nuclear button or two and more if needed.

This fear is no doubt reinforced in the minds of those Western leaders who are aware of what Prime Minister Golda Meir once said to me in an interview for the BBC’s Panorama programme. As readers of my book and one or two of my blog posts over the years know, she said that in a doomsday situation “Israel would be prepared to take the region and the whole world down with it.”

Experts: Invasion of Syria Could Lead to Nuclear War

The Threat of Nuclear War Is Now HIGHER Than During the Soviet Era

Turkey previously shot down a Russian jet.

Now, Turkey and Saudi Arabia are threatening to invade Syria.

How dangerous could this get, in a worst case scenario?

Robert Parry – the investigative reporter who broke the Iran-Contra story for the Associated Press and Newsweek – wrote yesterday:

A source close to Russian President Vladimir Putin told me that the Russians have warned Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan that Moscow is prepared to use tactical nuclear weapons if necessary to save their troops in the face of a Turkish-Saudi onslaught. Since Turkey is a member of NATO, any such conflict could quickly escalate into a full-scale nuclear confrontation.

International community condemns Ankara blast, stands with Turkey

The international community has condemned a car bomb attack in Ankara that killed 28 people and wounded 61 others near the armed forces’ headquarters, parliament and other government buildings.

He said there could be no justification “for such horrific acts” and that “NATO allies stand shoulder to shoulder in the fight against terrorism.”
Meanwhile, the White House said it condemned the attack in Ankara and that stands in solidarity with Turkey.

“We stand together with Turkey, a NATO ally, a strong partner, and a valued member of the counter-Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant coalition in the face of this attack,” said Ned Price, a spokesman for the White House National Security Council.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel also released a statement on Feb. 17, in which she sharply condemned the “horrifying” attack.

The chancellor said she was horrified by the attack in Ankara and that her thoughts were with the families of the victims and the injured.

OBAMA: AMERICANS WOULDN’T WANT TO GIVE TRUMP THE NUCLEAR CODES

For those still playing along with the election reality show and pretending the federal political process in this country is real, Obama went after Trump’s electability yesterday, suggesting that Trump is too much of a hothead to be in a position of power that involves the ability to declare wars, including nuclear ones.

Bush struggles to mask mounting frustration

'I should stop campaigning maybe,' the candidate quips.

“The press is totally at the mercy of Donald Trump,” Bush said after Edward Scott, 58, a Bush supporter, stood up and expressed concern that the former governor’s pitch on preparedness and policy “doesn’t resonate” and that the bombastic businessman has been “knocking [him] off center.”

Moments later though, a second likely Bush supporter, David Villinger, 62, stood up and offered a similar lament that his campaign “has been co-opted by the P.T. Barnum of our time.”

Then a third questioner encouraged Bush to show more fire, asking Bush if he could be more of “an [S.O.B.]” like his brother.

Wrong on Iraq? Not Everyone

***
In September 2002, Scott Ritter stepped in the path of the White House’s PR blitz, challenging the administration and quickly becoming one of very few prominent critics of the looming war. In a Chicago Tribune op-ed (9/10/02), Ritter exposed a deception on the part of Vice President Dick Cheney that should have sent reporters scurrying to catch up. Cheney claimed in an August 2002 speech (8/26/02) that the Iraqi regime had been “very busy enhancing its capabilities in the field of chemical and biological agents,” and continued “to pursue the nuclear program they began so many years ago.” To back this up, Cheney added, “We’ve gotten this from the firsthand testimony of defectors, including Saddam’s own son-in-law”—a reference to Lt. Gen. Hussein Kamel, the former Iraqi weapons chief and Iraq’s highest ranking defector. (See Extra!, 5-6/03.)

Ritter pointed out that Cheney was omitting an inconvenient part of Kamel’s story:
Throughout his interview with UNSCOM, a UN special commission, Hussein Kamal reiterated his main point—that nothing was left. “All chemical weapons were destroyed,” he said. “I ordered destruction of all chemical weapons. All weapons—biological, chemical, missile, nuclear—were destroyed.

The F-35’s Terrifying Bug List

The Pentagon’s top testing official has weighed and measured the F-35 and found it wanting. Technology
The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter programs the most expensive military program in the world, is even more broken than previously thought. The jet can’t tell old parts from new ones, randomly prevents user logins into the logistics information system, and trying to eject out of it will likely result in serious neck injury and maybe death. A Pentagon office is warning that the plane is being rushed into service.

The Pentagon’s office of testing and evaluation on Monday released a report detailing major problems, or “deficiencies” with the aircraft. The report follows the release of a December memo by Michael Gilmore, the Department of Defense’s director for Operational Test and Evaluation, or OT&E. The report goes on to question the logic of pushing other governments to purchase large blocks of the aircraft until the issues are fixed.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Our military is absolutely doomed, if they have to go into battle (particularly against the Russians or Chinese) with crud like this, (pardon my French).

I hate and loathe war, because in my world, there is always a way to resolve geopolitical differences other than a military conflict scenario; but if war is going to happen, I want our men and women in uniform to have the absolutely best equipment possible.

In every contract for every piece of aircraft and weaponry the US military buys, including items manufactured by Lockheed Martin Aeronautics (which manufactures this POC), there should be a clause which stipulates that not having whatever they are selling completely operational, delivered on time and within budget as a crime punishable by the fullest extent of the law, and that the chief executives who do not do that and are found guilty by a jury of their peers, serve hard jail time.

This, I think, would "cure the problem", and I frankly think every man and women in uniform for the United States deserves this.

Unfortunately, you have the "when pigs fly" factor here, because politicians get rewarded handsomely for supporting various elements n the military/industrial complex by awarding contracts to them.

Cheney Calls Trump a 'Liberal Democrat' After Bush 9/11 Claims

Former Vice President Dick Cheney wants Donald Trump to get his facts straight. Cheney, who served under President George W. Bush from 2001-2009, sounded off on Trump for claiming that Bush failed to keep Americans safe in the wake of the September 11 terror attacks at Saturday’s GOP debate in South Carolina. Trump then held two press conferences on the campaign trail this weekend in case the press didn’t hear him the first time.

(*When Jeb called the family into his campaign , I didn't realize he meant the WHOLE family .
Cheney's screwing with us . '
claiming that Bush failed to keep Americans safe in the wake of the September 11 terror attacks' I don't recall that coming from Trump . I just remeber him saying 9/11 happened on Bush' watch . And if memory is serving me well , I seem to recall George W Bush & Richard Dick Cheney sitting in the highest executive chairs in the nation , on that day .)

Turkey Is About to Find Out That 'No' Means 'No'

Despite a whirlwind of statements from several Arab nations, NATO and the UN, Russia has only said two things:

1) If ground troops from any nation enter Syria without Damascus' permission, it will be a declaration of war." AND;

2) The Americans - the American President and our Arab partners - have to ask themselves if they want permanent war."

Other than those two public statements, Russia has been very quiet. The fact that the Russians have said nothing is a very revealing thing: There is no more left to say.

The time for talking is over.

Actions will determine the future.

Trump’s crafty move on Iraq: His war comments allow conservatives to move past the Bush years while saving face

Trump's Iraq comments were initially surprising, but they give conservatives a way to put Bush years behind them
***
Trump accused the former president of lying about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and called the war “a big, fat mistake.” Trump also sneered at Jeb Bush that the “World Trade Center came down during your brother’s reign.” These comments range from demonstrably true (the 9/11 comment) to arguable (there’s no proof that Bush knowingly lied, but his administration did heavily massage the evidence to get their preexisting desire to start a war in Iraq). Perhaps unaccustomed to hearing reality-based rhetoric during their debates, the Republican audience booed Trump loudly for this.

US SHRUGS OFF YET ANOTHER REPORT OF CLUSTER BOMBS LAUNCHED BY SAUDIS IN YEMEN

Following a new report from Human Rights Watch on the use of banned cluster bombs by the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen, the United States State Department has once again given a statement so the government may appear as if it is concerned. But there have been consistent cluster bomb reports since the U.S.-backed intervention was launched in March 2015, and each time business as usual has resumed with no regard for the civilians killed by these explosives.

On December 29, 2015, State Department deputy spokesperson Mark Toner said, “I don’t have anything here that conclusively points to or conclusively speaks to the use of cluster munitions. We have expressed these concerns, though, about their use in the past.”

A reporter pressed Kirby on September 9, 2015, on how cluster bombs were different than barrel bombs, because the U.S. government condemned the Syrian government for using barrel bombs that killed civilians.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Cluster bombs, when they fall, and do not detonate, look very much like toys of some kind.

For curious children and toddlers, these cluster bombs do a tremendous job of tearing them apart, limb from limb, when they do detonate.

And of course, selling these weapons to a government with a human rights record just to the right of Attila the Hun, means you know precisely how they are going to be used, which is precisely what the US government has done here.

And when it comes to money for the US weapons manufacturers, like Textron, the US government has utterly no shame whatsoever;
and of course, the cluster bomb manufacturers, I am quite sure, contribute heavily, both overtly and covertly, to both sides of the aisle, to make sure that the production, and sale, of these weapons continues, unabated.

“A Special Place in Hell”… For Hillary Clinton and Madeleine Albright?

As UN Ambassador and the Secretary of State in the Bill Clinton regime, Albright was a fanatical advocate of the genocidal sanctions blockade that killed more than a million women, children and men in Iraq, and of the 1999 U.S./NATO bombing war against Yugoslavia.

On May 12, 1996, nearly six years into the U.S./UN sanctions, Albright was interviewed on CBS “60 Minutes” by Lesley Stahl, who had just returned from Iraq, about the impact on the Iraqi population:

Lesley Stahl: “We have heard that a half million children have died. I mean, that’s more children than died in Hiroshima. And, you know, is the price worth it?”

A GOLDEN AGE FOR PENTAGON WASTE

As we have often noted one of the giant logs stuck in the eye of many conservatives, people who typically argue for smaller government, is that they often defend military spending with little reservation. Defense, we are told is enumerated in the Constitution and as such is a legitimate expenditure. And yes, defense, is enumerated in the Constitution. Massive unchecked spending, undeclared wars, and bases around the world are not however enumerated in the Constitution.

(From US News)

Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, has called for a full audit of the unit responsible for the most egregious Afghan cases. And on Jan. 20th, the Senate Armed Services Readiness Subcommittee held hearings on the subject. The Pentagon’s witness, Principal Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Brian McKeon, was decidedly on the defensive as senators from both parties peppered him with questions about his department’s poor record keeping and lack of accountability.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This waste and corruption is going to bite the US military in a very sensitive spot, if allowed to continue to go unchecked.

With Russian and Chinese weapons makers, when items are field deployed, they are delivered on time, reasonably within budget, and work as advertised, if not better.

With American weapons makers, there is a nearly incestuous relationship between Congress (whose members are supported, covertly and overtly, by the large weapons makers) and those companies which get the defense contracts.

The outcome of all this is that when US weaponry is delivered, it is very late, has generally had huge cost over-runs, and doesn't perform anywhere near what is specified, once it is field deployed.

IF the US gets into a major war with Russia, and/or or China, the brokenness of our weapons systems is not going to help matters one bit.

Lugar Bio Laboratory in Tbilisi Latest: It’s Getting Worse by the Day

Today people are getting sick with Swine Flu and Zika all over the world, with Ebola hanging back while we await the next outbreak. Diseases occur naturally, but since World War II governments have spent billions weaponising different viruses to be used alongside the usual crop of diseases, the old bacterial standbys like anthrax or smallpox and train loads of poison gas.

A bio-chemical warfare “medical research” facility, like the one in Tbilisi, is almost exactly the same as a fully-fledged bio-chemical warfare production facility. All that would be required is to use one portion of a research facility for this purpose, maybe a few secret labs and underground or outbuilding production facilities which are easy to hide. How you tell one from the other is by examining the plans, the security protocols and the budget. You then look at the management of the facility, its history and examine what diseases it “researches.”

SPIES IN THE SKY

AMERICAN AND BRITISH INTELLIGENCE secretly tapped into live video feeds from Israeli drones and fighter jets, monitoring military operations in Gaza, watching for a potential strike against Iran, and keeping tabs on the drone technology Israel exports around the world.

Under a classified program code-named “Anarchist,” the U.K.’s Government Communications Headquarters, or GCHQ, working with the National Security Agency, systematically targeted Israeli drones from a mountaintop on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. GCHQ files provided by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden include a series of “Anarchist snapshots” — thumbnail images from videos recorded by drone cameras. The files also show location data mapping the flight paths of the aircraft. In essence, U.S. and British agencies stole a bird’s-eye view from the drones.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The troubling questions are, where, precisely, is the Israeli government looking at using these armed drones, and to whom are they selling this technology?!?

They have a history - and track record - of selling to anyone who has the money to buy; North Korea, perhaps?!?

Staff at Paris Airport Angry after Finding Fake Bombs ordered by US Embassy

A security exercise gone wrong saw tempers flare in a Paris airport, after fake explosive devices were discovered by FedEx workers in a ripped package, sources told AFP.

Employees of the American courier service at Charles de Gaulle airport were shocked to find a pressure cooker filled with nuts and bolts inside a package in transit from the US to Tunisia.

On further inspection they discovered a container of other similar devices, along with what appeared to be detonators, said Frederic Petit, who represents the company’s employees for the CGT union.

The staff alerted authorities of “imminent danger,” and officials arrived to test the device using sniffer dogs and X-ray machines.

A security source at the airport said the devices were actually decoys bound for the US embassy in Tunisia that were being used for a training exercise.

Israel supplies South Sudan government with wiretapping equipment

Rearming for the apocalypse

Obama’s proposed “modernization” increases our vulnerability, not our security. The first and most obvious reason is that it will certainly lead other countries to seek equivalent arsenals of their own. It is especially upsetting to Russia, which already feels under increasing American threat as a result of our military maneuvers on its borders and the fact that many of our missiles are positioned in Germany, Turkey, and other countries near its territory. The Russian defense minister recently announced that in response to Obama’s plan, Russia will “bring five new strategic nuclear missile regiments into service.” China would surely match that escalation. If it does so, India will follow. Then Pakistan will jump into the race. It is a recipe for disaster.

This money would be far better spent on restoring our American infrastructure, which is crumbling to dust as I type this.

Monsanto’s history in the food and pesticide business has become well documented. The Big Agricultural giant has found themselves in many a headline from the production of synthetic marijuana patents to Indian farmers committing mass suicide, to the run of the mill lawsuit over cross pollination of crops. In short, Monsanto is on every turn in the agricultural world; yet in another terrifying turn they’ve now been linked to the use of White Phosphorus on Palestinians in Gaza 2008 and 2009.

“THE PENTAGON HAS NO CLUE HOW MANY WEAPONS IT HAS LOST TO ISIS”

For more than a decade, the United States has supplied huge quantities of weapons and military hardware to the Iraqi government—and a large chunk of that equipment has disappeared and landed in the hands of ISIS fighters and members of Iranian-backed Shiite militias responsible for massacring civilians. Everything from M-16s and bullets to Humvees and tanks have been lost. But neither the US nor Iraqi governments can say how much US-supplied materiel has been diverted to militant groups or how it’s ending up there.

Vladimir Putin’s Russia: Perfect Foil To The Anglo-American Axis And Their New World ‘Order’

One of the best kept secrets which predicated the inevitable collapse of Soviet communism and the subsequent breakup of the USSR is that it actually occurred in a manner not too unlike a carefully controlled demolition. Only in this case they were bankers and politicians, investment brokers and power-brokers who actually pressed the buttons. All of the plans toward that end were fastidiously laid by these stakeholders, each of whom had the greatest interest in exploiting the vast wealth of the Russian Motherland.

Nuclear Missile 'Mishap' Costs Air Force $1.8M

The video that accompanies this article is full of shit. More than five countries have signed the NPT -- including Iran. Israel REFUSES to sign the treaty even though it has been proven that they do posses nuclear weapons.

And after a little thermonuclear exchange, welcome to full employment and a new (waste)land of opportunity.

Yet Another Military-Industrial-Complex Power Grab

After examining 14 million records, including data on campaign contributions, lobbying expenditures, federal budget allocations and spending, we found that, on average, for every dollar spent on influencing politics, the nation’s most politically active corporations received $760 from the government. The $4.4 trillion total represents two-thirds of the $6.5 trillion that individual taxpayers paid into the federal treasury.

Israel vs Iran: Israel Loses, *Big* Time

First, there has never been any real evidence of an Iranian military nuclear program, but even more important is the fact that Iran never had any need for nuclear weapons. A lot of anti-Iranian propaganda is directly predicated on the notion that having nuclear weapons is highly desirable, yields some big advantage, and that all nations would want to acquire them. This is utter nonsense. In reality, possessing a few nuclear devices would only turn these devices into high priority targets for destruction by the USA and/or Israel. And even if, by some miracle, the Iranians managed to hide these devices while deploying them on missiles or aircraft, using any one such device would guarantee a massive retaliation from the Empire. What is the point of having a few nukes when Israel has hundreds?

Israel and the South African Nuclear Bomb Documents

Secret South African documents reveal that Israel offered to sell nuclear warheads to the apartheid regime, providing the first official documentary evidence of the state's possession of nuclear weapons. The "top secret" minutes of meetings between senior officials from the two countries in 1975 show that South Africa's defence minister, PW Botha, asked for the warheads and Shimon Peres, then Israel's defence minister and now its president, responded by offering them "in three sizes". The two men also signed a broad-ranging agreement governing military ties between the two countries that included a clause declaring that "the very existence of this agreement" was to remain secret.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Now that a deal has been reached with Iran over its non-existent nuclear weapons, and the sanctions lifted, it is time to remember that only one nation in the Middle East actually has nuclear weapons, and that is Israel, which has so many nuclear warheads that, as these documents show, they tried to sell one to the former government of South Africa.

Left unanswered; who ELSE did Israel sell nuclear weapons to!

IAEA Director General’s Statement on Iran

Today, I released a report confirming that Iran has completed the necessary preparatory steps to start the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. The report was submitted to the IAEA Board of Governors and to the United Nations Security Council.

It was issued after Agency inspectors on the ground verified that Iran has carried out all measures required under the JCPOA to enable Implementation Day to occur.

This paves the way for the IAEA to begin verifying and monitoring Iran’s nuclear-related commitments under the agreement, as requested by the U.N. Security Council and authorised by the IAEA Board.

Closing the 'Collapse Gap': The USSR Was Better Prepared for Collapse than the US

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. I am not an expert or a scholar or an activist. I am more of an eye-witness. I watched the Soviet Union collapse, and I have tried to put my observations into a concise message. I will leave it up to you to decide just how urgent a message it is.

My talk tonight is about the lack of collapse-preparedness here in the United States. I will compare it with the situation in the Soviet Union, prior to its collapse. The rhetorical device I am going to use is the "Collapse Gap" – to go along with the Nuclear Gap, and the Space Gap, and various other superpower gaps that were fashionable during the Cold War.

Broken Promises On Display At Native American Treaties Exhibit

For centuries, treaties have defined the relationship between many Native American nations and the U.S. More than 370 ratified treaties have helped the U.S. expand its territory and led to many broken promises made to American Indians.

A rare exhibit of such treaties at the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C., looks back at this history. It currently features one of the first compacts between the U.S. and Native American nations – the Treaty of Canandaigua.

Broken Treaties 101

The United States has a long history in which it abused its relative power over other populations. Its relations with Native Americans were no different in this regard. The United States frequently signed and committed itself to treaties with Native Americans that they repeatedly broke, a practice that has been present in American policy since its inception.

Native Americans without Treaties

One of the largest groups of Native Americans without a treaty of recognition with the US are the Native Hawaiians—the native people that inhabited the State of Hawaii. Though it is undisputed that the Native Hawaiians are a native people—people that are indigenous to the land they now live on that were there before any contact with the US or European explorers—the Hawaiians are not what lawyers call a recognized tribe.

The Biggest Threat

The headlines are filled with the latest alleged threat posed by ISIS – a band of savages thousands of miles away that, at most, has the capacity to inspire the crazies in our midst to acts of relatively smalltime violence.

Relative, that is, to the real threat of violence, which emanates from our own “defense” policies as formulated in Washington, D.C. – the very real and growing threat of nuclear war.

In short, the world is rapidly becoming a much more dangerous place. And it’s not because of ISIS, or the “terrorist threat” – it’s due to our policy of global intervention, which requires a “forward stance” that includes rattling the nuclear saber.

Why do we have over 7,000 nukes in our arsenal – enough to destroy the world several times over? Why are the contracts for “modernization” speeding through the procedural hoops faster than anyone can keep track of them?

Webmaster's Commentary:

Ultimately, the cold, clear eye of historical perspective will judge President Obama as one of the most Machiavellian, sociopathic warmongers of the 21st century.

I am willing to bet the the Nobel Committee which awarded him the Nobel Peace Prize is collectively wringing their hands about how lousy a decision they made in awarding him what had previously been a rather significant global accolade.

Israel got the fifth modern German submarine

Israel has today received the fifth submarine of German production, which has the most modern properties and can remain under water for up to a week.

At an official ceremony in the port city of Haifa, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the underwater fleet to Israel "to deter and frighten the enemies who seek to destroy us, as saying.

"They should know that Israel can hit strongly anyone who tries to harm us," he added.

The newest submarine was named Rahav by biblical sea monster, AFP reported.

No Danger of Nuclear War? The Pentagon’s Plan to Blow up the Planet

Publicly available military documents confirm that nuclear war is still on the drawing board of the Pentagon.

Compared to the 1950s, however, today’s nuclear weapons are far more advanced. The delivery system is more precise. In addition to China and Russia, Iran, Syria and North Korea are targets for a first strike pre-emptive nuclear attack.

Let us be under no illusions, the Pentagon’s plan to blow up the planet using advanced nuclear weapons is still on the books.

America’s Now-Aggressive War Against Russia

America’s aristocracy is determined to take over Russia. Ever since the end of the Soviet Union and of its communism, the Cold War has become replaced by an increasingly hot war in which the US and its allies are expanding NATO right up to Russia’s borders, and imposing against Russia what the US refused to accept being imposed upon itself during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis: nuclear checkmate!

Saudi nuclear weapons 'on order' from Pakistan

Saudi Arabia has invested in Pakistani nuclear weapons projects, and believes it could obtain atomic bombs at will, a variety of sources have told BBC Newsnight.
While the kingdom's quest has often been set in the context of countering Iran's atomic programme, it is now possible that the Saudis might be able to deploy such devices more quickly than the Islamic republic.

NORTH KOREA SAYS IT TESTED H-BOMB, THOUGH ADVANCE DOUBTED

Soon after the ground shook around its nuclear testing facility, North Korea trumpeted its first hydrogen bomb test - a powerful, self-proclaimed "H-bomb of justice" that would mark a major and unanticipated advance for its still-limited nuclear arsenal.

Pyongyang's announcement Wednesday was met with widespread skepticism, but whatever the North detonated in its fourth nuclear test, another round of tough international sanctions looms for the defiant, impoverished country.

LAST YEAR, PRESIDENT OBAMA WAS THE NUMBER ONE WEAPONS DEALER IN THE WORLD

Foreign arms sales by the United States jumped by almost $10 billion in 2014, about 35 percent, even as the global weapons market remained flat and competition among suppliers increased, a new congressional study has found. American weapons receipts rose to $36.2 billion in 2014 from $26.7 billion the year before, bolstered by multibillion-dollar agreements with Qatar, Saudi Arabia and South Korea. Those deals and others ensured that the United States remained the single largest provider of arms around the world last year, controlling just over 50 percent of the market.
