Centcom Commander: US Must Keep Troops in Afghanistan to ‘Send a Strong Message’

Speaking at the Foreign Policy Initiative’s forum today, Gen. Joseph Votel, the head of Central Command, praised President Obama for not following through on planned drawdowns of ground troops in occupied Afghanistan, saying he wants to keep troop levels at least this high for the foreseeable future.

Gen. Votel argued that keeping 8,400 troops in Afghanistan more or less permanently was “a very wise move,” and that it would “send a strong message” to the people of Afghanistan that the US believes “the military strategy is working.” The US invaded and occupied Afghanistan in 2001.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Forgive me, but has US General Votel gone absolutely barking mad, and lost his reality licence, to have made such a statement...in public?!?

Were I able to invite this man over for tea (and I sincerely doubt he would accept the invitation), I would have to ask him, point-blank: what are the metrics to which you can honestly point which indicate, 15 years on, and with the Taliban taking more and more territory here on a daily basis, that the US military strategy is actually "working"?!?

What do you actually mean by that?!?

So I must be brutally honest here; the only element right now for whom this occupation is "working" is the burgeoning Afghani opium trade.

As reported at thefiscalnews.com last month:

Losing the War on Heroin: Poppy Production Soars in Afghanistan

Oh, and it gets worse: not only is the opium trade growing like crazy; US troops are also being tasked with guarding the opium poppy farms.

So please, General Votel, cut the crud, already; we know why you are keen on keeping US and Coalition soldiers in Afghanistan for as long as possible, and it is not for taking territory away from the Taliban, or insuring the freedom of the Afghani people.

It is to guarantee the continuation, and expansion, of opium production here, to fund various "off the shelf" activities of various US alphabet soup agencies, and insure that Congressional oversight is completely non-existent.
