Covid could be a pest control attempt gone wrong
GeorgeAfter successfully eradicating wild European rabbits in the 1950s by infecting them with Myxomatosis, someone might have decided to try to eradicate rats (a known carrier of plague) similarly with a beefed-up virus in 2019.
Then something went wrong, and people started to die too. Maybe they beefed the virus up a bit too well. So the protagonist is now laying low because a) who wants a jillion lawsuits b) the rat virus idea by itself is still valid, only the last implementation was botched.
