Ireland Archbishop stunned by Dr Rowan Williams' criticism of Catholic Church

The Archbishop of Dublin today said he was "stunned" to hear the Archbishop of Canterbury declare that the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland has lost all credibility because of the child abuse scandal.

Diarmuid Martin, the second most senior Catholic in Ireland, responded to a rare breach of ecumenical protocol by Dr Rowan Williams in an interview with BBC Radio 4.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Memo to Archbishop Diarmuid Martin: "stunned" is about to become your "new normal", as swathes of the faithful watch in stunned disbelief as the Vatican bobs, weaves, and blames the victims and the press for its problems, but refuses to accept any blame for its institutional corruption when it comes to child abuse by its clergy.

Unless and until the Vatican tackles this crisis head-on, in a public and responsible way, look for thousands, if not millions, to desert the church immediately, pronto.
