Pelosi asks Trump NOT to deliver State of the Union during the government shutdown in bid to prevent prime time attack on Democrats as key Republican senators tell him to surrender

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi formally requested that Donald Trump delay his State of the Union address in a letter she sent the president on Wednesday.

The Democratic leader cited 'security concerns' amid the government shutdown that has lasted longer than any other federal closure in history at 26 days and counting.

She asked that he wait until the dispute that limits the functionality of the Department of Homeland Security has been resolved to deliver his speech to a joint session of Congress.

Pelosi had invited Trump earlier this month to address the House and Senate, per tradition, on Jan. 29 — a date that the White House accepted.
