Two Districts in Southeast Afghanistan Fall to Taliban

Taliban fighters have overrun two districts in the southeastern province of Paktika, on the border with Pakistan, officials said Tuesday as heavy fighting continued across Afghanistan.

Local officials said Taliban fighters began attacking security checkpoints and the centers of Omna and Gayan districts in Paktika on Sunday, forcing Afghan security forces in the area to pull out, leaving large quantities of weapons and equipment.

"After almost two days of heavy fighting, Taliban captured both district centers," provincial council member Fazel Rahman Katawazi said, adding that three members of the Afghan security forces were killed and a number of others injured.

The Taliban have taken a series of district centers this year, many of which have been subsequently retaken by Afghan security forces, which control areas with around two-thirds of the country's population.

On Monday, U.S. Army General John Nicholson, who commands the NATO-led Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan, said security had improved in 14 districts and declined in eight others this year, leaving the overall levels of government control across the country roughly stable.

"Roughly stable", General Nicholson, MY ASTROLABE!!!!

Sir, respectfully, the US and NATO forces are continuing to get clobbered, and 17 years on, the Afghani people have not been "pacified".

This will only happen when the US and NATO joint command simply carpet bomb the country, and kill millions; we both know that this will not happen: the optics would simply be too horrific (although I would imagine that such an attack may well have been discussed.)

IF US officials and the NATO High Command had two braincells to rub together, they would withdraw US and NATO soldiers out of the country as rapidly as was safely possible, then negotiate with whatever government was left standing in Kabul for the pipeline, rare earth, and opium poppy rights.

Unfortunately, of course, such a plan... would be logical, and therefore would be rejected immediately.

How many Afghanis, US and NATO troops are going to have to continue to die because of this prolonged barbaric stupidity, which is getting the US and NATO no where near their actual goals of resource expropriation in Afghanistan than they were 17 years ago, when Bush had the country invaded?!?!?
