Latest word today is that Dark Lord of the Shi# Darth Dubya may weaponize space.
Historically, the US does not announce plans to weaponize anything until in fact they are ready to deploy in a manner where the public is likely to see it. When Bush walked out on the ABM treaty, the rapidity with which ABM systems started to be deployed suggested a long period of covert development, and indeed there have been numerous reports that the Aegis-CEC system that accidentally shot down TWA 800 already had an ABM capability at the time.
So, with this history as a guide, it hardly comes as a surprise that work on weaponizing space has actually been in progress for quite some time.
So, has Darth Dubya built himself a Death Star? There are a few clues that suggest that the US may in fact be betting its future control of the rest of the world on a super-technology "wonder weapon" yet to be made public.
First off, some three trillion dollars went missing from the Pentagon budget. Even for the Pentagon, that is a lot of missing loot. To understand what three trillion dollars will buy, a shuttle flight costs roughly two billion. Somewhere there is a very expensive, shiny new toy for the military.
In recent weeks, we have seen a dramatic increase in the number of de-orbiting space junk. Usually, the media implies they are meteors, even as they describe the almost horizontal trajectory typical of objects coming down from orbit. Is something testing out how to knock satellites down?
Then there is Bush's arrogant attitude towards the rest of the world. In a nation with a fragile economy, a billion and a half-a-day trade deficit, and a military already stretched to the breaking point, Bush's bullying of other nations and outright defiance of the Geneva Conventions doesn't seem to make much sense ... unless he thinks he has an ace up his sleeve.
Congress just passed yet another appropriation for the military, yet bases are being closed, and our kids in the war zones still do not have adequate equipment. Where is all this money going? And why the obvious de-emphasis on conventional air, sea, and ground warfare?
As I mentioned above, the US usually announces plans to create a new weapon system after the system has already been covertly developed.
Now Bush says that he wants to weaponize space. I submit that in all probability, this has already been done.
