Freezing rain, sleet on the way as Houston remains under winter storm warning

Officials are warning residents to stay off the roads today if they can, as the potential for freezing rain and sleet is only expected to grow as the hours roll on and the temperatures continue to drop.

A winter storm warning remains in effect across the region, until midnight, and the National Weather Service warns that rain will gradually turn into a hazardous wintry mix from north to south.

The wintry weather has impacted roadways throughout the region and led to the cancellation of hundreds of flights from Houston's main airports. And CenterPoint has reported 11,000 customers with power outages ostensibly due to the weather.

'Ice quakes' hit Wisconsin: Deep booms heard in the middle of the night cracks open in frozen ground

Some strange booms have shaken residents in Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin.

The series of explosion-like sounds rattled residents from Waupun, Campbellsport and elsewhere Tuesday and sent Fond du Lac County sheriff's deputies out looking for a cause.

Geologists say the booms were likely a phenomenon commonly known as an ice quake.

They are the after-effects of the frost quakes - or cryoseism - which are more commonly found on glaciers in the polar regions.

It's caused by water that sinks into the soil and bedrock where it freezes and expands, causing an explosive popping sound that feels like a mild earthquake.

Most frost quakes occur after a heavy rainfall or snow fall when there is a large amount of moisture on the ground.

The world's coldest village: Siberian outpost reaches near-record cold temperatures as thermometer BREAKS after recording minus 62C

Welcome to the coldest village on earth where the average temperature in January is -50C and inhabitant's eye lashes freeze solid mere moments after stepping outside.

The remote Siberian village of Oymyakon is the coldest permanently inhabited settlement in the world.

It was so icy in the Russian village that a new electronic thermometer conked out after recording a bone-cracking minus 62C.

The official weather station at the 'pole of cold' registered minus 59C, but locals said their readings were as low as minus 67C - less than 1C off the lowest accepted temperature for a permanent settlement anywhere in the world.

And that record breaking recording was taken in the town back in 1933.

THOM ANDERSON: That time it snowed 17 inches here

At intermission, I stood in the lobby of the old Florence Little Theatre on South Cashua Drive watching snow fall on the parking lot. When we went to the car after the show, there was a pretty good covering.

This was a bit of a surprise. We had understood there was a chance of snow that day in February 1973, but no big deal. An inch or two of the white stuff was average when snow happened around here. The next morning, it still fell heavily, and it had gone further than any local snowfall I could remember. We were unprepared for the 17 inches finally measured at the Florence airport.

Now we have temperatures crashing, almost the entire continental United States frozen over, snow accumulating in record amounts and ice forming in the great lakes at breathtaking speed. From Baltimore to Caribou, Maine efforts were underway to clear roadways of ice and snow as wind chill temperatures were to plunge during the day, reaching -40F (-40 C) in some parts after sundown, according to the National Weather Service.

However, where this system tracks remains highly uncertain and will ultimately determine sensible weather impacts along the East Coast. Subtle changes to the forecast may be the difference between a snowstorm or more Arctic cold and little or no snowfall,” said Ed Vallee, a meteorologist who specializes in Northeast weather.

Bill Nye: Blue States Will ‘Impose Economic Sanctions’ Against Climate Change-Denying States

Friday on MSNBC, climate activist Bill Nye warned conservatives to “watch out,” saying progressive blue states will “address climate change” on their own.

Nye said, “Only 40 percent of people in the U.S. think that Congress should be addressing this and that’s because certain conservative groups, especially from the fossil fuel industry, have been very successful in introducing the idea that scientific uncertainty, plus or minus two percent, is the same as plus or minus 100 percent.”

'Perhaps we could use a little bit of that good old Global Warming': Trump uses record-low New Year's eve forecasts and arctic blast gripping the northern US to justify his decision to pull out of the Paris Climate Accord

President Trump has issued a comment on the arctic blast that's bringing negative temperatures to several states across the northern US - saying that maybe those states would actually benefit from global warming.

'In the East, it could be the COLDEST New Year's Eve on record,' he tweeted from Mar-a-Lago Thursday night, where it is currently a balmy 78 degrees Fahrenheit.

'Perhaps we could use a little bit of that good old Global Warming that our Country, but not other countries, was going to pay TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS to protect against. Bundle up!'

He was referring to his decision that the United States will pull out of the Paris Climate Accord, making America the only country in the world not to sign it. The Accord was designed to attempt to curb global greenhouse gas emissions and limit global warming to within two degrees Celsius. His administration also dropped climate change from the list of national security threats.
