FLASHBACK - Truth and Fiction in Elie Wiesel’s “Night”

Though Wiesel offers himself as a paragon of moral virtue, the truth is somewhat seamier. As detailed in this myth-shattering piece by Alexander Cockburn from the February 2006 print edition of CounterPunch, Wiesel assiduously campaigned for the Nobel Prize and has for decades tried to pass off his short book “Night” as a true account–a “testimony” in his words– of his experiences at Auschwitz, even though key scenes in the book have been exposed as fiction.

CONNECTING THE DOTS: CRACK, CONTRAS, AND THE CIA

This 1996 interview with Gary Webb took place after his “Dark Alliance” newspaper series made waves across the country for piecing together the puzzle of the US crack epidemic.

The pipeline of CIA backed drug smuggling into the country and money smuggling out of the country to support the Nicaraguan Contras was wide open from the mid 1970s on, with players using everything from their shoes to freighters to move cocaine.

Webb was widely smeared by the CIA’s favorite newspapers (The New York Times, the Washington Post, The LA Times) shortly after this interview.

He was eventually vindicated, but not before his career was destroyed. He was found dead of an apparent suicide in 2005. The price of being a whistleblower?

The Riots in France Are NOT Just About Taxes

The riots in France have been blamed on one thing: a new carbon tax that Macron wanted to put upon the people. That's what the French government is telling us and that is what the media is echoing.

But on closer examination, the problem is far, far deeper than taxes. Here are some things you may not know about the situation that has pushed the French people over the edge.

YOUR DAILY DOSE OF BOOGA BOOGA - Jihadis are plotting a devastating CHEMICAL WEAPONS attack in Britain and could launch a chlorine bomb on London Underground, security chiefs warn

Terror chiefs believe a devastating chemical weapons attack in Britain is now ‘more likely than not’, The Mail on Sunday can reveal.

The chilling assessment follows the interception of ‘chatter’ between senior figures in Islamic State (IS). The terror group has been inspired by the poisoning of former KGB agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia, by Russian agents in March.

Before the novichok attack in Salisbury, the Government’s Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC) put the risk of a chemical weapons strike by jihadis at 25 per cent.

The Russia Investigation Is About Criminalizing Peace

“For those who long wondered why throughout the presidential campaign Trump could not bring himself to say a critical word about Russian President Vladimir Putin, we now know the answer: Trump was hoping to do business in Russia, and doing so would require the approval of Putin.” – USA Today Opinion

Make no mistake, the mainstream left and state serving-media voices are trying to gaslight an entire generation into believing any candidate that wants peace with Russia may be a foreign conspirator worthy of prison, shame, and family persecution.

Former congressman Ron Paul, as a peace presidential candidate, did not regurgitate war propaganda against Russia either. Neither did Senator Rand Paul when he ran. The twisted logic of the Jewish ‘historic right’ to Israel

Even when I believed, mistakenly, that the "Jewish people" was exiled by the Romans in 70 C.E. or 132 C.E., I didn't think that this conferred on the Jews some sort of imagined "historic right" to the Holy Land. If we seek to organize the world as it was 2,000 years ago, we will turn it into one big madhouse. Why not bring Native Americans back to Manhattan, for example? ... As I pursued my research, my realization that the Exodus from Egypt never happened and that the inhabitants of the Kingdom of Judah were not exiled by the Romans, left me nonplussed. There is not one study by a historian who specializes in antiquity that recounts that "exile" or any serious historiographic study that reconstructs a mass migration from the place. The "exile" is a formative event that never took place

Tucker Carlson: Tucker Carlson: Trump ‘not capable’ hasn’t kept promises

***
The Swiss are very suspicious of anybody who is boastful. That's why I have a question about Trump…

…I hate that about him. I hate that… it's not my culture. I didn't grow up like that.

In your book you speak a lot about people who attack Trump, but you actually don't say very much about Trump's record.

That's true.

Do you think he has kept his promises? Has he achieved his goals?

No.

He hasn't?

No. His chief promises were that he would build the wall, de-fund planned parenthood, and repeal Obamacare, and he hasn't done any of those things. There are a lot of reasons for that, but since I finished writing the book, I've come to believe that Trump's role is not as a conventional president who promises to get certain things achieved to the Congress and then does. I don't think he's capable. I don't think he's capable of sustained focus. I don't think he understands the system. I don't think the Congress is on his side. I don't think his own agencies support him. He's not going to do that.

I think Trump's role is to begin the conversation about what actually matters. We were not having any conversation about immigration before Trump arrived in Washington. People were bothered about it in different places in the country. It's a huge country, but that was not a staple of political debate at all. Trump asked basic questions like' "Why don't our borders work?" “Why should we sign a trade agreement and let the other side cheat?” Or my favorite of all, "What's the point of NATO?" The point of NATO was to keep the Soviets from invading western Europe but they haven't existed in 27 years, so what is the point? These are obvious questions that no one could answer.

Apart from asking these very important questions has he really achieved nothing?

Not much. Not much. Much less than he should have. I've come to believe he's not capable of it.

Ya’alon admits Israel lied about Hezbollah’s tunnels

Former Israeli defence minister Moshe Ya’alon admitted on Thursday that the Israeli officials had for years lied about the existence of alleged Hezbollah tunnels beneath the Lebanon-Israel border.

Speaking to Israel’s Army Radio, Ya’alon said that the Israeli officials lied about the tunnels for years before they decided to carry out an operation to destroy them earlier this week.

“We did it to mislead the other side,” Ya’alon told the Army Radio. “There is an exaggeration in the way it [the operation] was presented, and I hope that does not hurt us,” he added.

Regarding previous remarks he delivered in 2016 that there was “no single tunnel” in the north, Ya’alon said: “My comments two years ago that there are no tunnels in the north was a lie in order to preserve the security of the state.”

However, he believes that there is an exaggeration regarding the ongoing operation.

“War Whores” Revisited. Flashback to Media Coverage of the 2003 Invasion of Iraq

Isn’t Amerika great? I mean, look at the world of (so called) television journalism. The more these characters ‘lay down’ for the masters of empire, the more they get compensated.

Let’s look at what transpired in March 2003 via our infamous ‘boob tube’. Before we get to that motley crew, we did have one of the unique and authentic (for those times) television news talk journalists, Phil Donahue and his daily show. His producer at the time, Jeff Cohen (of Fairness and Accuracy in Media), told this interviewer (on my internet radio show) that NBC, owned at the time by General Electric (a war industry corporation), gave him his ‘marching orders’ as to the show’s lineup of guests.

“We were covering, that winter, the run-up to a possible invasion of Iraq. I was told to make sure that for every guest on Phil’s show that was against the invasion etc, I needed to have two guests on in favor of the Bush/Cheney agenda.”

How US Military Spending Keeps Rising Even As The Pentagon Flunks It's Audit

On November 15, Ernst & Young and other private firms that were hired to audit the Pentagon announced that they could not complete the job. Congress had ordered an independent audit of the Department of Defense, the government’s largest discretionary cost center—the Pentagon receives 54 cents out of every dollar in federal appropriations—after the Pentagon failed for decades to audit itself. The firms concluded, however, that the DoD’s financial records were riddled with so many bookkeeping deficiencies, irregularities, and errors that a reliable audit was simply impossible.

Turkey's Economy Is A House of Cards - Consumer Debt Crisis Emerges

Turkey's soaring inflation, plunging currency, surging interest rates, and a collapsing stock market, has ended almost two decades of stable economic growth and the "good life" for Turkish consumers that started in 2001. Now, the greatest threat facing Turkey is a structural one: its desperate need for foreign financial resources.

A stable economic environment combined with easy access to global liquidity provided Turkey with abundant foreign resources.

The decade of expansionist monetary policies of the Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank enabled countries like Turkey to obtain cheap foreign resources and endowed Turkey with a rate of about 5% stable growth.

From 2003-2008, Turkey registered an annual growth of 5.9%. From 2009-2017, the rate of growth was 4.9% per year.

However, after 2014, there were signs the stable growth party was coming to an end. External expansionist policies were nearing an end and interest rate hike cycle was imminent.

Blain: "Are We Backing The Wrong Country In The Saudi-Iran Race"

A digression: Saudi vs Iran?

I had a number of comments about Monday’s porridge on the significance of Qatar pulling out of Opec, and what next for Saudi. What is the relevance for markets they asked?

That’s interesting question. Donald Trump recently told us that his successful negotiations and personal relationship with Mohammed bin Salman attracted planned investment of $450 bln into the US, including $110 bln in defence orders, from Saudi Arabia. He warned all that could be undone if we don’t turn a blind eye to the Khashoggi murder.

Webmaster's Commentary:

If Americans were permitted to travel there, I would love to tour Iran.

The art; the music; the continuity of history; the push the country is making toward educating both their young men, and their young women, encourages me to think that given time and space, it could be absolutely thriving state, and a great trading partner for the world

Unfortunately, Netanyahu's usual dystopian, hubristic view of Iran means only one thing; it must be destroyed in a horrendous war, but that the costs of such a war will only be borne...in American blood, and American money.

It is more than a little disconcerting to me, that President Trump's two best friends in the Middle East, are Prince bin Salman, the Saudi Butcher of Yemen, and Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu, the Israeli Butcher of Gaza.

Qatar's OPEC Exit May Just Be The Beginning

Authored by Tim Daiss via OilPrice.com,

Much has already been written over the last 24 hours by pundits and analysts alike about Qatar’s decision to leave the Organization of the Oil Exporting Countries (OPEC) by January next year. Some have chimed in, claiming that it’s an irrational move, while others have, perhaps correctly, attributed it to “toxic politics” in the always volatile Middle East. The latter view has much credibility given Qatar’s ongoing geopolitical rift with many of its Arab neighbors over allegations of financing terrorist groups, which led to a regional economic boycott of the country last year.

"We'll Do It Too": Putin Threatens Arms Race If US Nixes Nuclear Treaty

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that the Kremlin would "respond appropriately" if the United States pulls out of the Cold War-era nuclear weapons treaty that prohibits intermediate and shorter-range nuclear missiles, according to the WSJ .

In October, President Trump said that Washington would withdraw from the 1987 treaty, citing Russia's development of the 9M729 cruise missile - which Moscow has been working on for several years. As we noted in September, Russia has been working on sub-launched hypersonic missiles capable of carrying a nuclear payload.

Webmaster's Commentary:

And Trump's incontrovertible proof that this has actually happened.... is utterly nowhere to be seen.

Threats, allegations, demonization, and sanctions are generally the prelude to a war. And how the dickens can one blame Putin for making this statement, considering how badly the US government has blamed it countless times for things it utterly did not do, say the alleged "annexing" of Crimea.

Never Forget: George Bush's Wars Set The Stage For 25 Years Of Endless War

By 1989, it had become apparent to all - everyone except the CIA, of course - that the Soviet economy, and thus the Soviet state was in very deep trouble.

In November 1989, the Berlin Wall came down in the face of Soviet impotence. And, with the Cold-War corpse not even cold yet, president George Bush used the newly apparent Soviet weakness as an opportunity to expand US foreign interventionism beyond the limits that had been imposed on it by a competing Soviet Union. Over the next decade, Bush and his successor Bill Clinton — who very much carried on Bush's ideals of global interventionism — would place Iraq, Somalia, and Yugoslavia in the crosshairs.

"2018 Is Starting To Look Historic": This Is The Worst Market Since Nixon's Presidency

Usually the excuse "nothing is working" is used by finance professionals when begging clients not to pull their money, desperate to explain woeful performance and when there are no other explanations left. Only in 2018, that excuse is actually spot on.

After another abysmal day for stocks, in which stocks suddenly "waterfalled" due to coordinated CTA liquidations once the S&P500 breached its 200DMA, which saw both the S&P and the Dow turn to just positive for the year, the broader market suffered one of its worst, if relatively muted, sessions in the past three years.

As a result, market statisticians continue to fall over each other to describe the pain being felt across asset classes. And while it is customary to use the phrase "since Lehman" when in need of a blanket synonym for "dreadful", one analyst framed performance in 2018 differently: things haven’t been this bad since Richard Nixon’s presidency.

It is not a question of "if" the markets will tank, completely, but when.

Ron Paul Trashes Trump Foreign Policy: Doing The Same Thing And Expecting Different Results

After a week of insisting that a meeting with Putin on the sidelines of the G20 meeting in Argentina was going to happen, President Trump at the last minute sent out a Tweet explaining that due to a Russia/Ukraine dispute in the Sea of Azov he would no longer be willing to meet his Russian counterpart.

According to Trump, the meeting had to be cancelled because the Russians seized three Ukrainian naval vessels in Russian waters that refused to follow instructions from the Russian military. But as Pat Buchanan wrote in a recent column: how is this little dispute thousands of miles away any of our business?

Webmaster's Commentary:

This is only being done in a runup to more demonizing of Russia and Putin; in looking at the way things are flowing now, due to Trump's short-sightedness, we may well see Americans (with the Ukrainians) in a war against Russia, which could include China on Russia's side.

I would strongly advise "caution" to President Trump on this; at this point, the US military does not have the money; the manufacturing; the troop strength, or the weaponry to take Russia (and/or China) head on in a military conflict.

The personal relationship between the Bush and Salinas families was a matter of public record. Former President George H. W. Bush had developed close personal ties with Carlos Salinas and his father, Raul Salinas Lozano. (left)

According to the UN up to 14 million people are at risk of starvation in Yemen. Yet the American and British governments, who have the ability to stop the Saudi war machine in its tracks, continue the sale of weapons to Saudi Arabia and its coalition partners.

Corporate politicians try and defend the military actions of the Saudi led coalition in Yemen by sheer unadulterated lies. UK Foreign Office Minister Alistair Burt in a debate in the House of Commons blithely stated that the Saudi led coalition had not breached any international law.*

Yet evidence of war crimes in Yemen abound. Save The Children, which is feeding starving people in Yemen, has recently released figures showing that the Saudi instigated war in Yemen has caused the deaths of 85,000 children over the last four years.

Webmaster's Commentary:

There is a special place in hell, for world leaders who think that the starvation of children, in countries where supplies have been blockaded, means nothing, and that this is simply "collateral damage".

I seriously doubt that history will be kind to either the Saudi Crown Prince bin Salman, also know as the Butcher of Yemen, and his American side-kick, the American Merchant of Death in Chief, President Trump.

Assange Case: U.S. Espionage Act Is Illegal, Says John Kiriakou

“The only thing that can save Julian Assange is jury nullification,” says whistleblower John Kiriakou, a former C.I.A. counterterrorism officer and a former senior investigator with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee based in Virginia, in an exclusive talk to this reporter.

U.S. Justice Department is acting behind the scenes to have Assange extradited from the Ecuadorean Embassy in London, and prosecuted in the U.S. Criminal charges against WikiLeaks’ founder were accidentally revealed in early November, when Assange’s name was found on the court filing of an unrelated case, suggesting that prosecutors had copied a boilerplate text and forgotten to change the defendant’s name.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Kellen S. Dwyer, urging a judge to keep the matter sealed, wrote that

“due to the sophistication of the defendant and the publicity surrounding the case, no other procedure is likely to keep confidential the fact that Assange has been charged.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

Attempting to make a martyr out of Assange will have the polar opposite effect than that which the government wants to see happen.

When the truth becomes illegal to disseminate, the country in which this has happened, has gone completely fascist.

Reuters Creates Fakenews About Iran - Intentionally Conflates Two Different Missiles - Misquotes Official

The Reuters piece conflates ground launched ballistic missiles with air-to-air missiles that the air force commander wants to develop. The U.S. does not care about Iran's air-to-air missiles. It itself has far superior ones. The U.S. does care about Iran's ballistic missiles. But the Iranian general did not talk about those at all. The quote Reuters attributes to the Iranian general it is taken out of context and used to propagandize a non-issue.

The FARS piece Reuters cites is absolutely clear with what the air force commander means, even while its headline is probably too generalized:

FAA’s “Integration Pilot UAS Program” Is Really A National Police Surveillance Drone Program

The old adage if it looks like a duck (police drone), flies like a duck (drone) then it must be national police surveillance drone program, certainly appears to be the case here. (I took liberties with the old duck phrase.)

Manufacturing Truth

If you’re one of the millions of human beings who, despite a preponderance of evidence to the contrary, still believe there is such a thing as “the truth,” you might not want to read this essay. Seriously, it can be extremely upsetting when you discover that there is no “truth” … or rather, that what we’re all conditioned to regard as “truth” from the time we are children is just the product of a technology of power, and not an empirical state of being. Humans, upon first encountering this fact, have been known to freak completely out and start jabbering about the “Word of God,” or “the immutable laws of quantum physics,” and run around burning other people at the stake or locking them up and injecting them with Thorazine. I don’t want to be responsible for anything like that, so consider this your trigger warning.

Never Forget: George Bush’s Wars Set The Stage For 25 Years Of Endless War

George Bush's wars would prove to be only an introduction to what was to come during the next 25 years of American foreign policy: target a foreign regime that poses no threat to the US, and manufacture a nice-sounding reason for doing so. Today, the methods are the same, and only the names have changed.

John Stossel On Censorship: Google & Facebook Cross ‘The Creepy Line’ Daily

John Stossel has recently said that Google and Facebook aren’t just guilty of censorship, but they cross “the creepy line” of suppression of speech daily. Both companies have an obvious agenda, and they have proven that they will silence those who dissent.

Miseducated or Stupid?

Are Americans who admire the world’s most brutal regimes miseducated or stupid? Or do they have some kind of devious agenda?
