FLASHBACK - Memo to Obama: a Europe policy 3.0A WESS MITCHELL 11 November 2008

You will inherit a policy agenda for Europe that was conceived twenty years ago for a world that no longer exists. That agenda was built on three bedrock assumptions, all of which were then refreshingly new:

A Wess Mitchell is co-founder and director of research at the Center for European Policy Analysis, a Washington,DC-based foreign-policy institute

Also in openDemocracy:

John C Hulsman, "Memo to Obama: the middle east needs you" (11 November 2008) * that Russia was an enervated, status-quo power

* that Europe was unifying into an Atlanticist whole

* that American global - and therefore regional - power was virtually inexhaustible.

Working from these assumptions, your post-cold-war predecessors embarked upon one of the most successfully expansionist courses in the history of United States foreign policy, advancing the western ideological and institutional ambit by a space of half a million square miles in less than two decades.

NATO is modeling command structures on Cold War era, says Russian envoy

“Today, it has become evident that when NATO was making these decisions, they were gaining their inspiration from Cold War schemes. The draft name “North Atlantic Command” is a copy of the structure that existed until 2002, and was responsible for moving American forces from the US to Europe,” said Aleksandr Grushko, plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation in the NATO bloc, according to TASS.

“It also provided protection and defense at sea, lines of communications, organizing anti-submarine operations, and dealt with complex issues connected with ensuring speed and safety of this type of reinforcement,” he added.

How the West built Berlin Wall 2.0

How ironic as the latest anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall is being commemorated this week, a new wall has been constructed between East and West.

It’s not a wall you can actually see, but it’s there all the same. Far from being thrown into the dustbin of history for eternity, the old Cold War divisions are now arguably more pronounced than they were in the 1980s. Russia, for daring to thwart Western regime plans for Syria, finds itself sanctioned by the US and EU, with NATO forces on its borders. A crude form of Russophobia, the acceptable form of liberal racism, has become normalized in elite circles in the West. At the same time, countries in the old communist bloc that don’t do exactly what their ‘democratic’ US and EU masters demand face harsh penalties for their insubordination, and the demonization of their leadership.

Back to the future…NATO self-fulfilling war plans for Russia

Defense ministers of the US-led NATO alliance this week endorsed proposals to set up two new military commands – and it is clear Russia is the target of what are, in effect, war plans.

The setting up of an Atlantic command and a logistical hub in Europe to facilitate the transfer of troops and weapons was openly discussed by NATO officials as being aimed at Russia during their two-day summit in Brussels this week.

The two new commands being proposed are the first expansion of NATO’s command structure since the end of the Cold War more than 25 years ago. It’s a retrograde move that is not only an unnecessary, dangerous provocation to Russia, risking self-fulfilling war threats. Moreover, NATO’s renewed organizational cranking is openly calling for the integration of European societies and economies into its madcap military escalation.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Russia is ABSOFLIPPINGLUTLELY NOT the aggressor here; it is NATO and the US behaving in an aggressive manor, and prepping for war against Russia with these moves.

Dijsselbloem Admits "We Used Taxpayers' Money To Bailout The Banks"

“We had a banking crisis, a fiscal crisis and we spent lot of the tax-payers’ money – in the wrong way, in my opinion – to save the banks” outgoing Eurogroup head Jeroen Dijsselbloem said adding “so that the people criticizing us and saying that everything was being done for the benefit of the banks were to some extent right.”

As KeepTalkingGreece.com reports, Dijsselbloem was responding to a question posed by leftist MEP Nikos Chountis during a session at the European Parliament’s Employment and Social Affairs Committee on Thursday.

“This is valid for the banks of all our countries. Everywhere in Europe banks were saved at taxpayers’ cost,” he underlined.

“This was the reason for banking union and the introduction of higher standards, better supervision and a reform and rescue framework when banks have losses,” he said stressing “precisely so that we don’t find ourselves in that situation again.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

There is something glaringly, institutionally wrong when these vile economic evils are committed, and no one goes to jail.

The Greek people got railroaded, big-time, at the expense of the banks, and those executives creating these situations should be tried and convicted by a jury of their peers, period, end of discussion.

EU declares war on Gazprom and Germany, part one

Brussels. The European Commission seems to have made a final verdict on the project for the creation of the "Nord Stream-2" gas pipeline by Gazprom, which was to pass from Russia to Germany along the bottom of the Baltic Sea.

It was supposed to be put into operation by the end of 2019. The throughput of each of its two lines was to be 27.5 billion cubic meters per year. The cost of their erection is estimated at 9.5 billion euros. The new gas pipeline was designed to double the capacity of the Northern Stream-1 built earlier along the same route, which would ensure the uninterrupted supply of cheap Russian gas to Germany and the EU for years to come.

Europe receives as much gas annually via Nord Stream-1 as 700 tankers from the US could deliver to Europe, and at a much lower price. Russia and Germany have always considered this project to be commercial and extremely profitable for themselves.

Barcelona has hosted the annual event every year since 2006 and it brings in billions of euros to the city each year, much of which ends up in the pockets of local taxi drivers, hoteliers, owners of bars, restaurants and brothels, Airbnb hosts and, last but not least, the thousands of professional pickpockets that flock to the city for the four day event.

COMMITTEES of both houses of the US Congress for Armed Forces agreed to include an additional $ 4.6 billion for the so-called "confrontation with Russia in Europe" in the Pentagon's budget for 2018.

According to the proposed law, those $ 4.6 billion will be able to be used for the implementation of the "Initiative for the Restraint in Europe". In order to strengthen the sense of security of "allies from NATO " and to increase "US military potential in Europe".

It has been speculated that $ 100 million could be spent on raising the defense capability of three Baltic countries - Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

A Totalitarian Europe Now on Our Doorstep

Quietly, without most people noticing, the European Commission is moving ahead with a strategy that will arguably make the EU into the first fully operational model of a centralised ‘one state’ supranational authority: ‘A New World Order’; the long standing neoconservative ambition which lies at the heart of global secret society agendas and US geopolitical hegemony.

The key ingredient of this strategy is the establishment of an ‘EU Treasury’ which, according to Donald Tusk, President of the EU Council, will come into effect in June 2018, under the official title: European Monetary Fund. This will result in the single point control of all EU member state finances.

NATO Agrees on New Command Structure to Move Forces Across Europe - Stoltenberg

The move comes amid the unprecedented NATO military buildup in eastern Europe, which has been further boosted since 2014 in the wake of the crisis in Ukraine.
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — NATO members have agreed on instituting a new adaptive command structure to improve the alliance’s ability "to improve the movement of military forces across Europe," NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said in press conference after the North Atlantic Council Defense Ministers Meeting on Wednesday.

"Today, we agreed on the outland design for an adaptive NATO command structure which will be the basis for further work."

According to Stoltenberg, it is vital for the alliance to improve the movement of forces across Europe.

NATO Intensifies Its Preparations for War with Russia

In the document entitled “Progress report on the Alliance’s Enhanced Deterrence and Defence Disposition,” leading military figures call for a major boost to military capabilities in order to conduct a so-called “Major Joint Operation Plus.” The abstruse terminology in fact stands for a war involving the main military organisations of all NATO countries, i.e. hundreds of thousands of soldiers. Der Spiegel notes: “The period of the peace dividend is past, the command structures of the Cold War are returning.”

The secret report states that NATO must be able to “quickly strengthen one or more threatened allies, underpin peace and wartime deterrence, and support allies in the event of an attack.” The mobilisation of the necessary troops requires “robust military logistics and capabilities”. The lines of communication would have to extend from North America to the eastern and southern borders of the NATO Alliance.
