Senate Votes to Kill Bill Challenging Legality of Yemen War

SJ Res 54, the Senate’s War Powers Act challenge to the US military involvement in the Yemen War, was killed Tuesday by the Senate, meaning it will not get a direct floor vote. The bill noted that Congress never authorized the Yemen War, and would’ve compelled the US to withdraw its participation. The vote was 55-44.

The Red Sea 2015 “Secret Yacht Summit” that Realigned the Middle East

George Nader, the Lebanese-American businessman, who is co-operating with special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Donald Trump’s campaign funding, organised a secret summit of Arab leaders on a yacht in the Red Sea in late 2015, Middle East Eye can reveal.

Nader proposed to the leaders gathered on the yacht that they should set up an elite regional group of six countries, which would supplant both the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the moribund Arab League.

Nader said this group of states could become a force in the region “that the US government could depend on” to counter the influence of Turkey and Iran, according to two sources briefed on the meeting.

Nader brought together Mohammed bin Salman, who was then deputy crown prince of Saudi Arabia; Mohammed bin Zayed, crown prince of Abu Dhabi; Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, president of Egypt; Prince Salman, crown prince of Bahrain; and King Abdullah of Jordan onto the yacht.

The Israeli army quietly conducted a military exercise last week that simulated a multi-front war where Russia intervened to prevent Israel from attacking Syria, Haaretz reports. According to Haaretz, the drill involved the top-ranking officers of the Israeli Defence Force (IDF), as well as the headquarters staff of all the commands that would be required to successfully pursue a fight with Hezbollah, an Iranian-aligned militia based in Lebanon. Haaretz noted that Israel prepared for the scenario in which a war with Hezbollah in Lebanon would require the Israeli military to fight on other fronts — most likely Syria — where Hezbollah retains a significant military presence.

Report: Trump asked Saudi king $4bn for Syria goals

US President Donald Trump asked Saudi King Salman for $4 billion to spend on advancing Washington’s objectives in Syria, which Riyadh also shares, a report says.

US military newspaper Stars and Stripes carried the report on Friday, saying the demand was made by the US chief executive during a phone call with the Saudi monarch last December.

The money, it said, would be spent towards preventing the empowerment of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Syria’s allies, Iran and Russia. Washington would further the goal as far as bringing about “a political settlement of the war that ultimately includes the exit of both Assad and Iran,” it added.

It cited hawkish US Senator Lindsey Graham as reminding Gen. Joseph Votel, head of US Central Command earlier in the week of “the negative long-term impact that a win for Iran, Russia and Assad would have on US allies such as Israel and Jordan.”

Neocon Specter of John Bolton Looms Over Trump White House

John Bolton as National Security Adviser, with Nikki Haley in Bolton’s old job at the U.N. and fundamentalist Christian dominionist Mike Pompeo moving from CIA director to replace Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State, means that the neocons — never happy with the prospects of a Trump administration – will, once again, be in the driver’s seat of American foreign policy after a nine-year hiatus. Bolton’s tenure at the U.N. was punctuated by his own undiplomatic outbursts, as well as those of his spokesman, Richard Grenell, Trump’s nominee to be US ambassador to Germany. Bolton strenuously pushed the neocon foreign policy line, as spelled out in the charter for the movement founded in 1997, the Project for the New American Century (PNAC).

Saudis in Secret Peace Talks With Yemen’s Houthis

Publicly, Saudi Arabia has shown no sign of looking for a negotiated end to the war in Yemen. Behind the scenes, however, they’ve been in secret talks with the Shi’ite Houthis for the past two months.

Three years into the Saudi invasion, signs are that there is some war weariness, and that they’ve been making secretive approaches to the Houthis, by way of neighboring Oman, for the past two months. Diplomats say the Houthis are eager for a diplomatic agreement.

One senior Houthi confirmed that the talks have been underway, with spokesman Mohammed Abdul-Salam repeatedly traveling to Oman for meetings with Saudi officials, and trying to carve out a “comprehensive political solution.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

IF, in fact, these reports are true, there may be a reason for hope in Yemen.

GOP Leaders Want to Delay Yemen War Powers Vote

Expectations are that the Senate War Powers vote on the Yemen War, SJ Res 54, will come up for debate and a vote next week. That may not happen if the Republican leadership gets its way, however, as many are opposed to the bill, and are trying to stall a vote.

Some leaders are arguing the issue is too “divisive,” and that the matter should be sent back to a committee for closer study. Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN), by contrast, endorsed the Pentagon’s argument, saying the US does so much military engagement around the world that it would be dangerous to think the War Powers Act could apply to all of it.

But of course the whole point of the War Powers Act is that it does apply to any commitment of US forces overseas. It’s just that in recent years, presidents have relied on catch-all authorizations with vague limits to join some wars, and other times simply assumed Congress wouldn’t mind, as they generally have not minded.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The reality of this situation is, having armed, and provided guidance and mid-air refueling to the Saudi military, the US government has colluded in Saudi war crimes in Yemen:

There is nothing "divisive" about this; it is as real a statement of fact as are all the other horrible facts about this sordid military campaign in Yemen, 3 years on, and with no resolution in sight:

Saudi coalition killed hundreds of children in Yemen, confidential UN report claims

Because Yemen cannot grow its own food, and it has to be imported, the Saudis, with US military assistance, have blockaded the ports, meaning that malnutrition is causing death, and a massive health crisis for the country.

Cholera (perhaps weaponised?!?) and diptheria now haunt Yemen:
Images: Yemen malnutrition has generated a cholera crisis

The skyrocketing increase in massive fetal abnormalites, cancers and stillbirths in Yemen indicate that the Saudis have used depleted uranium, with the predictable results on Yemen's children:

Image: Yemeni child exposed to du in the womb (image courtesy of RUPTLY

In my world, the poisoning of a child in the womb with this atrocious weapon, is criminal and inhuman beyond belief. And what gets me, is that the man who ordered this campaign, is not at all an uneducated man; Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, is very bright, university educated, has a law degree, and wound up 2nd in his class.

But could his hatred of the Iranian Shiias, who are acting as advisors to the Houthi rebels, be so great as to compel him to order the death, by direct military assaults; starvation, and disease, of non-combatants, and Yemen's children?!?

Sadly, the short answer here is "Yes"; and as a Christian pacifist activist, I will have to continue to bear witness to these atrocities on this site as long as I have breath.

When you destroy the children of a country, you destroy that country's future.

History will not be kind to this man; I understand that he is known by many honorifics in Saudi Arabia, because he is Saudi royalty.

History, however, will remember him as the Butcher of Yemen.

Senator Corker, the US government has to stop this madness; as you are perfectly aware, according to our Constitution, only Congress can declare war. It has not done so in Yemen.

I don't know what your portfolio holds in terms of weapons stocks, but I do know approximately, your net worth: Google has scrubbed the articles on this, but there are always other places to go to find such facts:

Senator Corker Undervalued his Wealth by Millions The story, from 2015, stated the following:

And Senator Schatz, whose office I called last week, to encourage you to vote for this bill, you, sir, owe me a return phone call!

Or have your alleged constituents with a point of view on this war different from that of your own, become....expendable and irrelevant in the State of Hawaii?!?

Just checking, sir.

Why Are NATO Air Forces Moving From Turkey to Jordan?

People in the Middle East are joking cynically:

“From Incirlik, Turkey to Al-Azraq, Jordan with love.”

That is, if they pay any attention to the movement of NATO troops in this part of the world.

They should.

At least one substantial part of an incredibly deadly and aggressive force has been gradually relocated, from an ‘uncertain’ and according to the West suddenly ‘unreliable’ country (Turkey), to the impoverished but obedient Kingdom of Jordan.

It is now clear that NATO is not sure, metaphorically speaking, which direction is Turkey going to fly in, and where it may eventually land. It is panicking and searching, ‘just in case’, for an exit strategy; almost for an escape plan from the most important regional power.

Is the West really losing Turkey? Nobody knows. Most likely, nobody in Ankara is sure, either, including Mr. Erdogan.

Putin’s March 1st presentation of new Russian weapons has been greatly misunderstood as a declaration of strategic parity or triumphalism. This danger is not over yet, for a week later, on March, 7, President Putin emphasised his readiness to employ the nuclear weapons for retaliation purposes, even if it would end the world.

The Lobbying War for War in Yemen

"Coalition airstrikes are based on intelligence and extensive monitoring and surveillance, to ensure all targets are military installations…Extensive precautions are taken to avoid civilian areas, especially where women and children are present," a spokesman for the Saudi coalition in Yemen, announced on December 20.

Six days later, a Saudi coalition air strike ripped through a crowded market in Yemen, killing at least 54 civilians, including eight children. That same day another Saudi coalition air strike killed 14 civilians on a farm in Yemen. All were members of the same family. According to the United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator for Yemen, these were in addition to 84 civilians killed in just the previous 10 days in Yemen, and "These incidents prove the complete disregard for human life that all parties, including the Saudi-led Coalition, continue to show in this absurd war."

Iran FM vows 'utmost efforts' to help people of Syria, Yemen

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has pledged the Islamic Republic's "utmost efforts" to help people in the two war-ravaged countries of Syria and Yemen.

Saudi Arabia and its allies launched the war on Yemen in March 2015. The military campaign, which is accompanied by a land, aerial and naval blockade of Yemen, has so far killed more than 13,600 people and led to a humanitarian crisis.

GOP Senator Long Critical Of Yemen War Now Helping Trump Block Debate On It

Sen. Todd Young (R-Ind.) spent much of 2017 urging greater accountability for the American role in the civil war in Yemen ? presenting himself as one of few GOP critics of the Trump administration’s policies and aligning with prominent critics of U.S.-backed Saudi-United Arab Emirates operations in Yemen, like Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) and a bevy of national security experts on the left and right.

Now he is trying to undercut the clearest shot war skeptics have of forcing the U.S. to change course.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Sadly, this is the legislation which will probably be voted into law; and I would strongly suspect that it is utterly no accident that this legislation has been introduced shortly after the "AIIPAC Convention came to DC.

Young just apparently got "turned" to support the Israeli notion of a US proxy war against Iran, staged from Yemen and Saudi Arabia.

And precisely what this legislation is engineered to do IS to create an outright proxy war with Iran, which may well lead to an actual, physical attack by the US against Tehran.

US Pouring Weapons Into War-Torn Yemen

Three years into the 2015 Saudi-led invasion of Yemen, untold thousands are dead. Northern Yemen has been through the worst cholera outbreak in human history, and civilians continue to die in bunches from Saudi airstrikes against the region.

To call Yemen war-torn is really putting it mildly. Yemen is in a disastrous state, with a Saudi-led naval blockade threatening to starve millions. If there’s one thing Yemen has no shortage of, however, it’s weapons, with the US ensuring a massive supply continues to pour into the hands of Saudi and Emirati forces.

US arms sales are themselves at a record high during this war, in no small part because of purchases by the United Arab Emirates, and particularly by the Saudis, who are dropping US bombs on northern Yemen as fast as they can buy them.

Turkey, Iran part of 'triangle of evil' in region: Saudi crown prince

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman claims Turkey and Iran, along with extremist groups, have formed a “triangle of evil” in the region amid Riyadh’s anger over Tehran-Ankara cooperation in Syria and the Turkish support for Qatar in the standoff with a Riyadh-led quartet of states.

“The contemporary triangle of evil comprises Iran, Turkey and extremist religious groups,” Egypt’s Al-Shorouk newspaper quoted bin Salman as saying on Wednesday in an interview with newspaper editors in Cairo.

Saudi Strikes Kills Two Civilians, Wounds Several Children in North Yemen

Adding yet more bodies to the soaring number of civilian casualties inflicted by Saudi airstrikes against Yemen, Saudi warplanes carried out four strikes on early Wednesday in northern Yemen, near Saada. Two civilians were killed and a number of others wounded.

Three strikes hit a single family’s home, killing a woman and her daughter, and wounding a number of other children within. A fourth strike hit a relative’s house, next door, wounding those who survived the initial attack.

Saudi Arabia invaded Yemen in early 2015, and has since killed thousands of civilians in airstrikes. Concerns about the war crimes have grown internationally, but particularly in the US and UK, as both nations sell substantial arms to the Saudis, which adds to concerns of culpability in the war crimes. The US has also provided direct aid to the Saudi campaign.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Many years ago, the comic genius Bob Newhart, doing a monologue as a despondent radio show host, with a terrible shift, and no callers, made the statement, "Dead Burnt Babies; I'm for them!!", as a way to spark at least a call or two, filled with moral outrage at the comment.

But unfortunately, Saudi Arabia's Prince Mohammed Ben Salman, otherwise characterised by me on this site as the BOY, AKA, the BUTCHER OF YEMEN, is deadly serious about maximizing the genocidal assassination of infants, children, women, and the medically infirm, and other non-combatants, in a war which can only, ultimately, have a political, rather than military, solution.

And the US government and military are helping him do it, meaning that my country, the Unhinged, Surveilled, State of America, the country of my birth and nationality, is colluding in Saudi warcrimes in Yemen.

It's just not on the radar screen, because the corporate presstitutes and whorespondents just won't cover it.

I therefore, sincerely, and respectfully, ask ALL of Rivero's Rangers to call the number indicated above, to voice support for an end to the US government's participation in this slaughter of the Yemeni people.

The BOY is already on his "road show" in the UK.

This mass murderering prince will be negotiating for yet more bombs and bullets to enable him to further decimate the Yemeni people in a war of attrition; next, he will be coming to the US later this month, to do precisely the same thing.

I hope that when he gets to the US, that there will be peaceful, and massive demonstrations against his presence; sadly, I doubt that will happen, because far too few Americans have truly taken the time to educate themselves on what the Saudi government, with American military help, is doing in Yemen.

UPDATE: I have, myself, just called my two senators, Senator Hirono, and Senator Schatz, requesting that they support this bill. I requested a call back from Senator Schatz, as I know that when he is on-island, he lives relatively not far from here; I would not bet that it is going to happen, but I wanted him to know that I was passionate about the US colluding with Saudi Arabia in war crimes in Yemen. I spoke to his aide, and was polite, but strong about what I both know, and feel, on the issue.

Legal Scholars Trash Pentagon’s Effort To Prevent Senate Debate On Yemen War

Two top legal experts have told the Senate’s leaders that they see little merit in a Trump administration legal opinion criticizing Senate efforts to debate U.S. involvement in Yemen’s civil war.

On 22 January, the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen unveiled a new plan to deliver "unprecedented relief to the people of Yemen".

The Yemen Comprehensive Humanitarian Operations (YCHO) is a new "aid" programme with the ostensible aim of "addressing immediate aid shortfalls while simultaneously building capacity for long-term improvement of humanitarian aid and commercial goods imports to Yemen".

This will primarily be done through increasing the "capacities of Yemeni ports to receive humanitarian as well as commercial imports" - and all sealed with a whopping $1.5bn in aid contributions. What could possibly be wrong with that?

The problem here is not only that the funding required to meet the needs created by the Saudi-led coalition is estimated by the UN to be twice that amount. The real problem is that the plan will not, in fact, increase the imports on which Yemen is utterly dependent, but reduce them still further.

Webmaster's Commentary:

One would expect nothing less from Prince Mohammed bin Salman, AKA MBS, or, in the world of civilized human beings, the Butcher of Yemen, whose 3 year military campaign and ongoing war crimes in Yemen, have included the murder of infants, women, and the medically fragile elderly in civilian areas.

Children who don't get blown into smithereeens by his genocidal assassins wind up dying from malnutrition, and cholera (possibly weaponised) and diptheria rage in Yemen right now, due to the health problems brought on by malnutrition.

Oh, and BTW, the US government is ASSISTING his troops by providing mid-air refueling to his country's bombers, and targeting information.

I don't know about you; but being a citizen of a country participating with Saudi Arabian troops in war crimes in Yemen concerns me greatly about the trajectory of US foreign policy in the region under President Trump

It is unfortunate that Mike and I are too broke, and too old, to immigrate to a truly civilized country which isn't involved in such horrific practices, but that is the reality right now.

The BOY (Butcher of Yemen) is on his 2018 road show right now, first in the UK (most probably to negotiate for more bombs and bullets with which to continue his genocidal military campaign in Yemen), and will be touching down in DC later this month, for most probably the same reason.

I would like to hope that he is greeted by Americans who peacefully protest his visit; and let President Trump understand, clearly, that although the BOY may be one of his BFFs in the Middle East, he is no friend of honest, logical, pragmatic US foreign policy in the region, none of which appears to be in view at the moment.

Why Congress must vote on the United States’ role in Yemen

The Obama administration, without consulting Congress, quickly authorized U.S. military forces to provide “logistical and intelligence support” to the Saudi coalition. U.S. military support for this intervention continues to this day. U.S. forces are coordinating, refueling and targeting with the Saudi-led coalition, as confirmed last December by Defense Secretary Jim Mattis .

We believe that since Congress has not authorized military force for this conflict, the United States should play no role in it beyond providing desperately needed humanitarian aid.

That is why we are introducing a joint resolution that would force Congress to vote on the U.S. war in Yemen. If Congress does not authorize the war, our resolution would require U.S. involvement in Yemen to end.

Yemen, The Risks of Famine and Disease. New UN Humanitarian Response Plan Paints Dire Picture of Impact of US-UK-Saudi War

Escalating conflict continues to inflict civilian casualties and cause extensive damage to public and private infrastructure. Half of the Yemeni population live in areas directly affected by conflict, many of whom are suffering from the deliberate targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure, and other apparent violations of International Humanitarian Law (IHL). As of late December 2017, health facilities reported 9,245 conflict related deaths and over 52,807 injuries – meaning that an average of 60 people have been killed or injured every day in the past two and a half years. Given that only 50 per cent of health facilities remain functional, and acknowledging the limited reporting capacity across the country, this number is significantly underreported. Over three million people have been forced to flee from their homes since the escalation of conflict two and a half years ago, including 2 million who remain displaced.

But amid all the discussions of more contented societies lurked a more pressing issue right on the Emiratis' doorstep: the prospect that 5 million workers are set to enter the Middle East's job market each year, even as gainful employment is in short supply. That, at least, was on the mind of Christine Lagarde, managing director of the International Monetary Fund, who once more exhorted Arab governments to address youth unemployment — and fast. No one was about to disagree. From Morocco to Iran, states and leaders of all sects, political systems and governing systems understand the threat posed by the region's high youth unemployment.

The illegal Israeli occupation of the Syrian Golan Heights has now been in place for more than 50 years. This substantial territory, part of southern Syria, was conquered by Israeli occupation forces in the 1967war. The majority of the Syrian population in the territory was then either expelled, or fled towards safety. Israel demolished their homes, buildings and entire villages in the Golan in order to build Jewish settlements where they once stood.

The Shadow of an Israeli/US Attack on Lebanon and Syria Grows Larger by the Day

In Lebanon, the Prime Minister Saad Hariri has returned to Saudi Arabia to meet with his Saudi patrons for the first time since his shocking resignation on November 4, 2017, which he later withdrew. The timing of his visit suggests another anti-Iranian and anti-Hezbollah announcement will follow. Will Hariri issue another statement accusing Iran and Hezbollah of destabilizing Lebanon to add to the war rhetoric coming out of Israel at the same time that Lebanon is making a military agreement with Russia? The moves on the chessboard are happening fast and furious. Divide and conquer is clearly the strategy of Saudi Arabia, Israel, and the United States.

Putin: The Man Who Stopped Washington’s Regime Change Rampage

Putin has become an obstacle to Washington’s imperial ambitions which is why he has been elevated to Public Enemy Number 1. It has nothing to do with the fictitious meddling in the 2016 elections or the nonsensical “rolling back democracy” in Russia. It’s all about power.

American liberals would be surprised to know that Putin actually supports many of the same social issues that they support.

Putin is not the ghoulish caricature the media makes him out to be nor does he hate America, that’s just more propaganda from the corporate echo-chamber. The truth is Putin has been good for Russia, good for regional stability, and good for global security.

Catherine Shakdam: After Hitler, Saudis Next in History to Have Used Hunger as Weapon of War

Political analyst Catherine Shakdam says Saudi Arabia’s use of hunger as a weapon of war and unprecedented targeting of civilians are indications to the very nature of Saudi Arabia’s intentions in Yemen.

Shakdam, in an exclusive interview with FNA, said that Saudi Arabia wants “to destroy the very idea of Yemen as a sovereign nation” to ensure its own rule being the sole prevailing power in the region.

The analyst believes that the patient and resilient Yemeni people, backed by their own history and civilization, have already won the war against Saudi Arabia who has spent billions of dollars to buy military technology and mercenaries.

The Pentagon’s “Ides of March”: Best Month to Go to War

Is it a coincidence?

In recent history, from the Vietnam war to the present, the month of March has been chosen by Pentagon and NATO military planners as the “best month” to go to war.

With the exception of the War on Afghanistan (October 2001) and the 1990-91 Gulf War, all major US-NATO and allied led military operations over a period of more than half a century –since the invasion of Vietnam by US ground forces on March 8, 1965– have been initiated in the month of March.

The Ides of March (Idus Martiae) is a day in the Roman calendar which broadly corresponds to March 15. The Ides of March is also known as the date on which Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44 BC.

Lest we forget, the month of March (in the Roman Calendar) is dedicated to Mars (Martius), the Roman God of War.

For the Romans, the month of March (Martius) marked “the time to start new military campaigns.”

For Yemen’s sake, stop giving Saudis WMDs: Rouhani to West

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani has called on the Western countries to stop providing Saudi Arabia with weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) for the sake of Yemeni people, who have been suffering under Riyadh’s bloody attacks and siege.

Rouhani made the remarks in an address to a large crowd of people in the southern port city of Bandar Abbas in Hormozgan Province on Wednesday.

“We say to Europe and the world that if you truly care about the people of Yemen; Don’t give Saudi Arabia destructive bombs. If you really think of Yemenis, don’t give Saudi Arabia banned Napalm bombs, don’t give Saudi Arabia cluster bombs,” he said.

The comments came two days after Russia vetoed a British-drafted resolution at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) that seemed more to target Iran rather than address the Yemen crisis. The failed document called for “additional measures” against Iran over accusations that it violated the 2015 arms embargo on Yemen.

Senators Look to End Yemen War With First-Ever War Powers Challenge: US involvement in Saudi invasion never authorized by Congress

A bipartisan effort by four senators is looking to end the US military’s involvement in the Saudi-led war in Yemen, with the introduction of the first ever War Powers Act vote to come out of the Senate.

Senators Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Rand Paul (R-KY), Mike Lee (R-UT), and Chris Murphy (D-CT) are forwarding the bill, which notes that Congress has never authorized the use of military force in Yemen. This should allow Congress to oblige the administration to end US involvement in the war.

The US has participated in the Saudi invasion of Yemen since it began in 2015, with US planes performing mid-air refueling missions for Saudi bombers, and US warships at times participating in the Saudi-led naval blockade which is causing mass starvation in Yemen.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This move is morally correct, as the US government and military have been colluding with Saudi Arabia in war crimes in Yemen, through participation in the blockade and providing aerial refueling of Saudi bombers, supporting the bombing runs which have led to the massive, indescriminate killing of innocents, including women, children, infants, and the medically fragile elderly. And now, we have massive cases of cholera and diptheria ravaging the land.

But as morally correct as it may be, the passage of such legislation may prove quixotic in the extreme, for several reasons.

First, the Butcher of Yemen, AKA the Saudi Prince Salman, hates the fact that the Houthi rebels are Shia, and believes that they are getting extensive assistance from Iran (which, BTW, can hardly be proven at this point, other than for a few Iranian advisors).

Iran is considered by Saudi Arabian royalty and government to be its existential threat in the region.

So, the plan is, pound the Yemeni people down to extinction, through the genocidal campaign Saudi Arabia is currently waging against it, then go after Iran militarily. This was reported at globalresearch.ca on 13 February of this year:

The Coming War on Lebanon: Israel, Saudi Arabia, and the US Prepare for a long-Planned Middeast War.

The basic plan is to invade and control Lebanon, destroying Iran's ally Hezbullah; destabilizing and regime changing Damascus; then attacking Iran, with US and Israeli military help.

Of course, there is one tiny bit of of the calculus which Israel, Saudi Arabia, and the US haven't quite factored into their plans, and that is the current Russian presence in Syria, and the Russian promise it has consistently made to Iran to defend it if it should ever be invaded.

And THAT... is the thousand pound gorilla, sleeping splayed over the grand piano, which is going going to make such coming wars.... interesting, if not globally devastating.

Yemen's forgotten war: Locals tell their stories

With Yemen's political and humanitarian situation growing increasingly fragile, DW speaks to people inside the country about what life is like in the midst of the war.

The third anniversary of the war in Yemen is approaching, and there are few signs that the conflict, which is being fought between an armed military group called the Houthis and Saudi-backed government forces, is abating.

Last month, the country was pushed into further uncertainty following the killing of former President Ali Abdullah Saleh by the Houthis. Saleh, a former Houthi ally who had switched allegiances to support the Saudi-led coalition, was an important figure in the war and his death has been viewed as cementing Houthi power, in the short term at least.

Webmaster's Commentary:

In terms of blame, and really missing the mark as to just how resilient the Houthi rebels were, we can thank Saudi Prince Salman, the Butcher of Yemen, for this obscene situation here, aided and abbetted in his war crimes, by none other than the Good Old Us Government.

Innocent women and children have been slain, indiscriminately; the medical infrastructure has been gutted by Saudi bombings; and Depleted Uranium, that "gift that keeps on giving", has been used, giving rise to massive rises in stillbirths and horrific fetal deformities in Yemen's children.

Malnutrition is causing Yemeni children to starve to death; disease, in the forms of both cholera and diptheria (pehaps weaponized), have felled hundreds of other, and appear to be expanding their deathly grasp.

Prince Salman could initiate a diplomatic solution by attempting to negotiate with the Houthi Rebels; he will not, because of not wanting to "lose face" in the Arab World, and because he believes that the Shia Houthi are aided by Iran, his existential enemy.

So he is very happy, to continue to allow the death of Yemeni innocents, by any means necessary, to essentially beat Yemen into a pulp, before he goes after Iran with a direct military conflict, supported by the US Government, and specifically President Trump. As reported at financetwitter last November:

With Trump's Support, Saudi Crown Prince is ready for a war with Iran

Russia vetoes U.N. resolution citing Iran violations of sanctions against Yemen

Russia has vetoed a British-drafted U.N. resolution that promised action against violations of a U.N. arms embargo on Yemen and pointed to a report by experts that cited Iran as a violator. Russia then put forward a resolution to extend sanctions and the experts' work that made no mention of Iran or the panel's findings. It was adopted unanimously.

Spotlight: Peace far away as showdown approaches Syria's Eastern Ghouta

The rebel-held Eastern Ghouta in the countryside of Syrian capital Damascus has witnessed intense airstrikes and shelling as military showdown is approaching.

The spark of the recent unprecedented violence was ignited a couple of months ago when al-Qaida-linked groups launched an offensive against a key military base in the city of Harasta in the rebel-held Eastern Ghouta countryside of Damascus, prompting a counter military offensive in that area.

The attacks at the times were coupled with rebels shelling of the capital Damascus, and Syrian airstrikes targeting the rebel positions in Eastern Ghouta.

But the situation has dramatically worsened in recent days when a wide-scale military offensive on Eastern Ghouta was in place, preparing to end the presence of al-Qaida-linked groups in that area.

Webmaster's Commentary:

(Sigh) This is the worst kind of war; in packed, urban areas, where it can be impossible to detect friend from foe, and innocents get killed on a routine basis.

I sincerely hope (and pray) that the Russians, in concert with the Syrian military, have formulated a strategy which can guarantee the minimum numbers of civilian casualties possible here, but understand that this will be extraordinarily difficult.

The Coming Wars to End All Wars

The Trump and Netanyahu governments have a problem: How to start a greatly expanded Middle-Eastern war without having a justifiable reason for one. No doubt they are working hard to solve this urgent problem. If they can’t find a “justification” (which they can’t), they will have to create one (which they will). Or perhaps they will find what they have already created. Whatever the solution, we should feel confident that they are not sitting on their hands. History teaches those who care to learn that when aggressors place a gun on the wall in the first act of their play, it must go off in the final act.

Escalation in Syria – How Far Can the Russians be Pushed? - The Saker

A new US strategy in Syria: to punish the Russians as much as possible short of an overt US attack on Russian forces.

Events in Syria have recently clearly taken a turn for the worse and there is an increasing amount of evidence that the Russian task force in Syria is being targeted by a systematic campaign of “harassing attacks”.

First, there was the (relatively successful) drone and mortar attack on the Russian Aerospace base in Khmeimin. Then there was the shooting down of a Russian SU-25 over the city of Maasran in the Idlib province. Now we hear of Russian casualties in the US raid on a Syrian column (along with widely exaggerated claims of “hundreds” of killed Russians).

What’s Really Going On In The Middle East

Many are under the impression that the chaos that is spreading throughout the Middle East is to protect the petrodollar and secure oil resources for American and Western companies.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

First, the petrodollar is backed by Saudi Arabia and the other Arab countries. Yet, the US Congress recently passed a law that allows victims of “terrorism” to sue the Saudis.

That’s not how one maintains the hegemony of the petrodollar. Besides, if the petrodollar was the concern, Israel would be the first country to go, as most Arab countries do not support the theft of Palestine by the Zionists.

Saudi cluster bombs continue to endanger Yemeni kids’ lives

Thousands of innocent children continue to fall victim to Saudi Arabia’s use of cluster bombs in aerial attacks on residential areas across the Yemen, corroborating assertions of violation of international law in the impoverished Arab country.

Derhim al-Tuheiti was playing in a farming field in an area in Yemen’s western coastal province of Hudaydah, located 150 kilometers southwest of the capital Sana'a, less than a week ago when he found an unexploded cluster bomb.

He took it home, believing it was a toy or a piece of scrap metal. All at once, like deafening firecrackers, explosions ripped through the building, seriously injuring Derhim, his mother and siblings.
